MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Hello everyone!
I do hope you have had a great and safe festive season it sure got hot this summer! However, It is with deep sadness though I must inform everyone that long term Garrick Member Dr Richard Reynolds has passed away. Our deepest sympathies to Barbara and her family at this time. 2021 has arrived and there is a lot going on at the theatre. The Committee is all set ready to go and it is great to welcome new faces and welcome back others. We have a large committee and some new portfolios including Stage crew Co Ordinator and Project Manager. These roles are going to provide much needed support to our productions and theatre as a whole so it will be amazing to see how they progress through the year. Managing Carmen is in full rehearsal now and Siobhan and the team are putting together a great show. I encourage you all to book early to see this show! The Production Committee is now getting ready to plan 2022 our 90th year! Any suggestions or submissions please let us know. Our T.A.G program kicks off in February. TAG offers classes every month where teens can learn all parts of theatre as well being club members, it is so great to see more and more TAG's volunteering across the board. Finally, a large thank you to all our volunteers and members. Without you we don’t have a club. With that in mind should you ever have a question, suggestion or concern please get in touch with me for a chat. I do work odd hours but will return any call. OBITUARY DR RICHARD (DICK) REYNOLDS (1931-2020) THE GARRICK CLUB LOST a stalwart and long-time member with the death of Richard (Dick) Reynolds on the 29th of December. Many members would know Richard from his medical practice in Midland but few would be aware of his early history. Richard was born in Trentham in England in 1931, graduated from Birmingham University as a medical practitioner in 1955. During his undergraduate days he joined the territorial unit of the Parachute Regiment where he qualified as a parachutist. His national service was deferred until graduation whereupon he signed up for three years with the RAF and was posted to the RAF base at Akrotiri on Cyprus. This was a time of unrest on the island with Greek independence activities against a backdrop of Arab Israeli conflict. While stationed on Cyprus Dick set up the RAF’s parachute rescue team. Following his national service Dick returned to England where he met and married Barbara. The combination of flying and medicine made him an ideal candidate for the Royal Flying Doctor Service and it was to take up an position at Kalgoorlie that Richard and Barbara along with their children migrated to Australia in 1966. After three years with the Royal Flying Doctor Service in Kalgoorlie and two years in general practice, the family moved to Midland where Dick joined the St Andrews Medical practice. It was also around the time that Richard was introduced to the Garrick Theatre by Barbara’s interest in theatre. Richard became a long-time member of Garrick with at least one stage performance to his credit when he acted as part of the crowd in a bar scene in a Bill Motherway play. He is also remembered for providing, along with sons Jimmy and Matt, a range of off-stage animal noises for a play directed by Barbara. Richard became a regular “Stage-door Johnny” as he followed Barbara’s career around various community theatres. Richard was a tireless worker for Rotary
over many years and then in 1991 Richard volunteered for three months with the Red Cross at a hospital in Cambodia where his orthopaedic skills were particularly valuable treating minefield victims. Barbara and Dick along with Kerry and Tom Goode became regular international travellers with the comforts of cruising taken over in the later years. While always current with medical matters, Richard was not sure that electronic technology was always a good thing especially when he found he could not use cash to buy a beer at the cricket. A full life much of it spent in the service of others Richard is survived by his wife Barbara, son Matt, daughters Sarah and Judy, granddaughter Eve and great grandchildren Milly, Esther and Spencer. Richard’s funeral will be held at Bowra & O’Dea, 131 Great Eastern Highway Midland at 10 am Friday 22 January. 5

REQUEST FOR HELP CONTAINERS FOR CHANGE AS MANY OF YOU may know the Container for Change scheme has been launched. Rodney has registered Garrick for this and there will be some changes to recycling at the bar. This will be simple enough, cans and glass must be seperated. The big news about this is that anyone can donate their 10c refund. So by using the Garrick scheme i.d you are able to donate your cans’ deposit to the theatre. We will use these refunds to keep up maintenance and upgrade and would be very
much appreciated. (Some projects we are working on at the moment are foyer and bio box upgrades) The process is easy, go to your local depot. The staff take the i.d number and assign a bay, then they take the containers for a quick sort and count, fill in the paper work and return any bags/tubs. It takes ten minutes, tops.
