Director’s Note
In the Fall of 2017, a group of college students returned to the United States after attending the largest theatre festival in the world: the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. I was not in that group, but all of my best friends were. I remember playing catch-up for days, hearing about all of the groundbreaking, avant-garde, and surprising performance art they crammed into their trip. There was one show on everyone’s lips, gushedover and mania-inducing, surrounded by breathless, “It’s going to be what everyone’s talking about within a year.”
That was how the mega-hit Six entered my orbit. I had the same baseline knowledge of the six wives of King Henry VIII that any student tends to have (my AP European History teacher showed us the BBC/PBS Horrible Histories clip of the “Divorced, Beheaded, Died, Divorced, Beheaded, Survived” rhyme and a cheeky, “That’s all you need to know” comment). So I thought, Wow, there’s really a whole musical about this?
When the cast recording dropped the following Spring, I understood the obsession. This score’s rise in my life was meteoric, it became the soundtrack to every commute, every late night study session, and every pre-show dance party. Then, I put it away for years.
In anticipation of beginning this rehearsal process, the Education team took a moment to wax poetic over a central question: “What makes a Popstar?” We created an intricate Venn Diagram as the term felt insufficient to capture megastars like Beyoncé, Adele, Whitney Houston, Cher, Sabrina Carpenter, Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna… Who was a Popstar? Who was a Powerhouse Vocalist? Who was a “Pop Girlie”? Who was a Performance Artist? At the center where all of these categories overlap, is what the Queens of Six seem to strive for: the desire to not be boxed in as one “thing.”
I was thrilled to have the opportunity to work with two brilliantly unique casts of teen performers who may very well be on a similar journey. The desire to break out of expectations in order to discover some inner truth is a universal experience in adolescence. What I love about Six is what I love about spending a life involved in theatre: the discovery that we sometimes learn the most about ourselves by supporting others.
I’d encourage you to sit back and relax, but you’re at a concert. Get on your feet!

About the Authors
Lucy Moss is a Tony Award-winning® writer and the youngest woman ever to direct a musical on Broadway. Alongside her co-writer/close personal friend, Toby Marlow, she won a Tony®, two Drama Desks, and an Outer Critics Circle Award for their music and lyrics in the musical SIX (Broadway, West End, various other cool places). Their album SIX: Live on Opening Night was also nominated for a Grammy. She was also nominated for best director of a musical at the Tony’s® for her co-direction of SIX. Other writer-director credits include: Why Am I So Single? (Garrick Theatre) and Hot Gay Time Machine (Trafalgar Studios). Toby Marlow is the composer and co-writer of SIX, alongside Lucy Moss. Following the show’s debut at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2017, it has been performed in London’s West End, on a UK Tour, on Broadway, on two North American Tours, and in Australia, Korea, Canada, and the Netherlands. Toby is also the co-writer and co-performer of the award-winning Hot Gay Time Machine, which has enjoyed runs in London’s West End and at both the Edinburgh and Brighton Fringe Festivals. About the Cast
Taylor Polly (Catherine of Aragon, Purple Cast) is excited to be back with Gulfshore Playhouse for another amazing performance, and debuting her first main role with the theatre! Her past productions with Gulfshore Playhouse include Annie (Pepper), Frozen (Olaf), Chicago (Harrison/Ensemble), Puffs (Various), and most recently Anything Goes (Captain), to name a few. She’s also very active in her high school’s theatre program, as she’s the president of the BCHS Drama Club and starred as Roxie Hart in their production of Chicago last month! After Six, Taylor will be returning to Gulfshore in the summer to star as Katherine Blake in Freaky Friday, so be sure to come see the show!!
Scarlett Olivia (Catherine of Aragon, Gold Cast) is so excited to be a part of Six! Being on stage and performing is not only Scarlett’s passion, but where she feels at home. Some favorite past roles include: Matilda Jr (Miss Honey), The Lightning Thief (Clarisse LaRue) and Something Rotten (Shylock). Each show has been such an amazing learning experience and brought her so many happy memories along the way. She has learned a lot and made so many amazing new friends. Caroline Coleman (Anne Boleyn, Gold Cast) is an 8th grader at Gulfview Middle School. She has been in community theater in SWFL since the age of 9 and most recently played Mercutio in Romeo + Juliet here at The Conservatory. Other favorite shows include Legally Blonde (Serena), A Christmas Story, School of Rock (Marcy), and Newsies (Buttons). She also enjoys spending time in NYC with The Wright Way coaching (Rance Wright + Allison Frank). Rachel Kastner (Jane Seymour, Purple Cast) is a junior at GCHS. She has enjoyed acting since she started KinderAct with TNP at the age of 4 and has participated in many productions over the years, her most recent being Sarah Brown in GCHS’s Guys and Dolls. When not on stage, Rachel excels in academics, music, and sports. She was honored during spring training season to perform the national anthem for the Red Sox for the past four years. Rachel is excited to be working with the talented family at GCHS, and thanks her family for their love and support!
Maddy Benner (Jane Seymour, Gold Cast) is an actor/ singer with 10 years experience. She has performed with Gulfshore Playhouse, The Naples Players, and Naples Performing Arts Center. Her most recent and notable roles include Grizabella (Cats), Heather McNamara (Heathers Teen), Hope Harcourt (Anything Goes: Youth Edition) and this June, Fräulein Schneider (Cabaret). When not on stage, you’ll likely find Maddy singing the National Anthem for the Boston Red Sox, FC Naples, and others across Southwest Florida or performing at local events and galas with solo sets. She is excited to spend two weeks in NYC this summer attending Broadway Artists Alliance Week 4, including an OffBroadway performance, and training with Marc Tumminelli in his Broadway workshop. Jordan Daniels (Anna of Cleves, Purple Cast) is a freshman at Gulf Coast High School, and she is so excited to be playing Anna of Cleves in Six: Teen Edition. You may have previously seen her in her last production at Gulfshore Playhouse as Ares in The Lightning Thief. Caylee Valencia (Anna Of Cleves, Gold Cast) is beyond excited to be playing Anna of Cleves in Six: Teen Edition as part of the Gold Cast! This is one of her favorite shows she’s been a part of. Some of her favorite past roles include Casey in Anything Goes: Youth Edition, the Narrator in Puffs, Oaken in Frozen Jr, Harriet in Emma: The Pop Musical, and Percy Jackson in The Lightning Thief Musical. Caylee loves bringing bold, fun characters to life on stage and sharing her passion for performing with others. Camila Tenorio (Katherine Howard, Purple Cast)
This is Camila’s fifth production at Gulfshore Playhouse. Prior roles include: Annabeth in The Lighting Thief, Marcy Park in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, and Lipshitz in Chicago High School Edition. She also spends her time with the GCDrama program, being of apart of their most recent productions Grease as Rizzo and Guys and Dolls as Arivde. Camila is also involved with her schools auxiliary team. She wants to thank her family and friends for supporting her through everything! Kylie Ballinger (Katherine Howard, Gold Cast) is so excited to be part of her first show at Gulfshore Playhouse. She is a junior at Palmetto Ridge High School. Sydney Ernst (Catherine Parr, Purple Cast) is thrilled to be part of this production of Six! She is 15 years old and has a deep passion for theatre. When she’s not performing, Sydney enjoys spending time with her family and friends and attending church. About the Creatives
John Perine (Director/Director of Education) is a director, performer, playwright, and educator originally from the Nashville, Tennessee area and is the Director of Education at Gulfshore Playhouse. Recent directing with The Conservatory includes Romeo + Juliet, The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical, and he is looking forward to directing Freaky Friday this summer and Starcrossed this fall in partnership with Artis-Naples and the Naples Philharmonic. Kennedy McAlister (Music Director) is a Philadelphia-based performer, musician, and educator who received her Masters of Music in conducting from the New England Conservatory. She loves working with all kinds of voices and learners, and believes making music together is one of the best things about life. Recently, Kennedy returned from a four-month tour of Japan with Disney on Classic, and is headed back to perform as Moana on tour this fall. This production has been a joy and celebration of female empowerment and fierceness, and Kennedy is grateful she got to witness such friendship and talent among these queens! Kristen Martino (Scenic Designer) is excited to be returning to Gulfshore Playhouse Conservatory after previously designing several shows including Matilda Jr., Puffs, and Clue. She has designed over 20 productions with Gulfshore Playhouse over the past decade. Her work as a scenic designer has been seen on stages across the country, including productions at Drury Lane Theatre, ACT of CT, The Cape Playhouse, Shenandoah Summer Music Theatre, and Indiana University, where she completed her MFA in Scenic Design. Kristen began her career in Chicago, where she worked as a freelance and associate scenic designer. That chapter of her career provided opportunities to collaborate on a wide range of projects, from museum exhibitions to circus productions, as well as international theatre, including serving as an associate designer for the 2020 West End production of The Prince of Egypt. Kristen was also part of the team selected to represent the United States by designing the Emerging Artist Exhibit for the 2019 Prague Quadrennial and the recipient of the 2022 USITT Rising Star Award. Kristen is a proud member of United Scenic Artist Local 829. In addition to her professional design work, Kristen is dedicated to arts education. Meredith Singleton (Stage Manager) is a theatre artist and educator who has served at Gulfshore Playhouse since September 2021, where she started as an intern before being promoted to a full-time staff member. Before traveling to Southwest Florida, she attended Juniata College, located in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, where she studied Theatre and Elementary Education. There, she worked as a teacher and a stage manager, working on student productions as well as professional traveling productions. She has worked professionally as a classroom teacher, theatre artist, stage manager, and director, and has brought the arts to students across the country.
Joel Markus (COO & Managing Director) is thrilled to be in his eighth season as Gulfshore Playhouse’s COO & Managing Director. Joel enjoys working side by side with Kristen to produce Broadway caliber theatre while focusing on cultivating a great staff and culture. In his time at Gulfshore Playhouse, Joel has helped grow and quadruple the theatre’s budget, triple the staff, has co-managed the design and construction of the new $75M Baker Theatre and Education Center, the production shop construction project, has been instrumental in joining LORT (most recently, being on the negotiating committee for LORT and Actors’ Equity Association), and navigated and guided the organization through the pandemic and Hurricane Ian. Joel was recognized as one of the top COOs in SWFL by the Community Foundation. Joel’s thirty year career has taken him to some of our nation’s leading professional regional theatres. He most recently spent seven seasons at America’s oldest theatre, Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia. Joel has played integral roles in the production of hundreds of plays over ten seasons at the Indiana Repertory Theatre, four years at Geva Theatre Center in Rochester, NY, five summers at the Weston Playhouse in Vermont, American Players Theatre in Spring Green, Wisconsin, and North Shore Music Theatre in Beverly, Massachusetts. Joel is a graduate of Indiana University and originally from Miami, Florida.
Kristen Coury (CEO & Producing Artistic Director) is the Founder, CEO and Producing Artistic Director of Gulfshore Playhouse. She founded the Playhouse in 2004, and shortly thereafter started producing with no staff and virtually no funding. Under her leadership, the Playhouse has grown to a staff of 83 people with an annual budget of $14.5M with no long-term debt. Kristen led the charge to create the iconic $75M state-of-the-art Baker Theatre and Education Center at the gateway to downtown Naples, which opened on November 1st, 2024. As part of this project, Coury ignited one of the largest public/private partnerships in City of Naples history, initiating a land-swap with the Wynn family and subsequently donating over an acre of land to the City upon which to build a public parking garage. While in New York, she worked on Broadway for Walt Disney Theatrical Productions, and for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s company, The Really Useful Group, and made her feature film directorial debut with an independent film entitled Friends and Family. Kristen is also a frequent investor in Broadway productions, most recently A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical. Kristen has directed nearly 50 productions for the Playhouse. Most recently, she directed the inaugural show in the Baker Theatre and Education Center, Anything Goes. This season, she also directed Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest. Kristen was named one of the Men and Women of the Year by Gulfshore Life in 2013 and again in 2024. She also received the Murray Hendel Award for Civic Achievement in 2023. She served two terms on the board of Theatre Communications Group, the national advocacy group for professional theatre and is currently a member of the board of the Greater Naples Chamber of Commerce. Kristen is very honored to have been appointed to Florida Council for arts and culture by Senate President Kathleen Passidomo. She was named one of the Top 100 Most Influential Business Leaders in Collier County by Naples Illustrated for the last four years, and, this year, was listed in the 2025 Edition of Florida Trend Magazine as one of the 500 Most Influential Business Leaders in the State of Florida.
