I am so pleased to welcome you to Gulfshore Playhouse. Whether it is your first time or your fiftieth, I am so glad you’re here. We have quite a lot in store for you at what has become one of the region’s most bustling cultural centers. Throughout the day, our lobby welcomes visitors enjoying everything from a morning coffee to light bites and cocktails at happy hour. Our education wing is bursting with students of all ages participating in lectures, private lessons, group classes, and performance opportunities. And, of course, our theatres are full, featuring a vibrant array of plays and musicals ranging from world premieres to beloved classics.

I am also thrilled to announce our upcoming 26-27 season! Flex passes are now on sale for what promises to be an extraordinary year. We begin in the Struthers Studio with a musical revue of the great Kander and Ebb, presented in an intimate cabaret style with small tables and drinks. The World Goes ‘Round features live musicians onstage and singers performing iconic hits like “New York, New York” and “All That Jazz.” You won’t want to miss it.

Opening the Moran Mainstage is a project I am especially excited about: my own new adaptation of A Christmas Carol. We will produce the world premiere of this holiday classic right here in Naples — made in Naples, for Naples. In the spring of 2027, our stages will be “on fire” with a diverse lineup, including the world premiere of Brent Askari’s Fundraiser: A Play. You may remember his play The Refugees, which we premiered in 2024; this new work is even funnier and just as poignant. We will also mount Heist, a thrilling new play that feels like Ocean’s Eleven on stage, produced in partnership with two nationally renowned theatres. The season continues with the legendary musical Guys and Dolls, followed by the thought-provoking new Broadway hit JOB. We will conclude the season on the Mainstage with Tartuffe, Molière’s delightful 17th-century masterpiece that remains just as relevant today.

A letter from the Chairman of the Board

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I am delighted to welcome you to this season at Gulfshore Playhouse. We are coming off an extraordinary inaugural year in the magnificent Baker Theatre and Education Center, and I am thrilled to welcome you back for our second season in this new home.

As Chairman of the Board, one of my greatest joys has been seeing the excitement and pride our community feels in having a theatre of this caliber here in Naples. We’ve watched our audience grow, expanded our reach through education programs, welcomed neighbors and friends into our lobby and bar, and opened our doors to events for organizations and businesses across the region. The growing awareness of the art being produced and the activities happening daily at Gulfshore Playhouse are wonderful signs for the future.

With growth comes greater responsibility. The cost of producing theatre at this level continues to rise, as does the need for expanded staff and resources. Yet the impact of this work could not be clearer. Theatre enriches our lives and strengthens our community. It takes the vision of leadership, the creativity and hard work of a dedicated staff, the guidance of an experienced Board, the generosity of donors, and the loyalty of an engaged audience to make it all possible.

This season promises many exciting productions and opportunities—far more than I can highlight here. Director’s Note

Hello and welcome to Beautiful: The Carole King Musical!

Firstly, it is truly thrilling to be back with you at Gulfshore Playhouse. As you know, it’s a very different situation than it was back in 2012 when I was here to direct the hilariously fun, and totally silly, Ken Ludwig farce, The Fox on the Fairway.

And flashing forward…what a complete joy to help guide this winning and wonderful musical story to the glorious, new Gulfshore stage. Like many, or perhaps most of you I grew up with Carole King’s music underscoring many of the most meaningful moments of my life. Her songs and melodies resonate with me deeply, and evoke so much that is profoundly personal –and yet somehow totally universal at the same time. As a director of lots of musicals, I’m constantly in awe of how music invites us to reflect on our own journeys: the risks we take, the relationships that shape us, and the moments when we choose, or are pushed to believe in ourselves.

While Beautiful celebrates the life journey of a true legend and music superstar, I admire that it’s not just about someone seeking fame and fortune. First and foremost, I think it’s about the importance of friendship, love – and the cost of following one’s undeniable passion. It’s about evolving as an artist, learning to trust one’s own voice (quite literally in this case) and finding courage when life presents the most unexpected and challenging turns - all the while, learning to balance the unique trials of a career driven by passion with the needs of family and real life. Carole, and of course her talented and complicated lyricist, husband Gerry Goffin’s story and music remind us that resilience and vulnerability often walk hand in hand. Her songs capture the exhilaration of first success, the heartbreak of people changing, and the quiet triumph of self-discovery.

In creating this fresh, new production for Gulfshore Playhouse, our talented, heartfueled company of artists has embraced the spirit of collaboration at the center of Carole’s story. The friendships depicted in her story reveal that affecting art rarely happens in isolation. I’m grateful to all involved and am happily reminded that the best creative “stuff” happens through open and honest connection.

About the Authors

Carole King (Words and Music) Pop music would be very different without the contributions of Carole King, who at age 17 wrote her first #1 hit with Gerry Goffin, "Will You Love Me Tomorrow," for the Shirelles. The dozens of chart hits Goffin and King wrote during this period became legendary, but it was 1971's Tapestry that took King to the pinnacle, speaking personally to her contemporaries and providing a spiritual musical backdrop to the decade. More than 400 of her compositions have been recorded by over 1,000 artists, resulting in 100 hit singles and six Grammys.

Gerry Goffin (Words and Music) born in Brooklyn in 1939, Gerry Goffin met Carole King at Queens College, and their musical collaboration began almost immediately. They married in 1959, and that same year wrote their first hit song "Will You Love Me Tomorrow?" (The Shirelles). The duo penned more than 50 Top-40 hits including "The Locomotion," "Natural Woman" and "Up on the Roof." In 1987, Goffin and King were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. Goffin has left an indelible mark on American music.

Barry Mann (Words and Music) has written the melodies of some of the most influential pop songs in musical history. In addition to "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling," the most-played song of the last century, and the songs heard in Beautiful, he composed later standards like "Somewhere Out There" (winner of two Grammys), "Here You Come Again," "Sometimes When We Touch," "Just Once" and "Don't Know Much." Together he and Cynthia Weil have amassed an incredible 112 pop, country, and R&B awards from Broadcast Music Inc. for significant radio air play. He has been inducted into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Cynthia Weil (Words and Music) was the acclaimed lyricist of classic songs such as "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling," the most-played song of the 20th century. In addition to the songs heard in Beautiful, she set the words to later standards including "Somewhere Out There," "Here You Come Again," "He's So Shy," "Just Once" and "Don't Know Much," to name just a few. Weil was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, honored with multiple Grammy nominations and two Grammy awards for "Somewhere Out There" as the Motion Pictures Song of the Year and Song of the Year. Weil passed away on June 1, 2023.

About the Authors

Douglas McGrath (Book Author) was a filmmaker and playwright. Most recently, he directed the HBO documentary "Becoming Mike Nichols." He collaborated with Woody Allen on the screenplay for Bullets Over Broadway, for which they were nominated for an Academy Award. He wrote and directed the Oscar-winning Emma from the Jane Austen novel; Company Man; Charles Dickens's Nicholas Nickleby, which won the Best Ensemble Cast from the National Board of Review; Infamous; and the HBO documentary, "His Way," nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Nonfiction Special. His play Checkers opened the 30th anniversary season of New York's acclaimed Vineyard Theatre. His book for Beautiful: The Carole King Musical was nominated for Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle awards. He began his career as a writer for "Saturday Night Live" in what was incontestably the worst year in the show's history. He has written essays on the arts and politics for the New Republic, the New Yorker, The Nation, The New York Times and Vanity Fair. Douglas McGrath passed away on November 4, 2022.

Gulfshore Playhouse operates under agreements between the League of Resident Theatres (LORT), a consortium of regional theatres throughout the nation; Actors Equity Association (AEA), the union of professional actors and stage managers in the United States; the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society (SDC), an independent national labor union; and United Scenic Artists (USA), a union of scenic, costume, lighting and sound designers.

The National Alliance for Musical Theatre, founded in 1985, is a notfor-profit organization serving the musical theatre community. The 165 organizational members and 75 individual members, located throughout 33 states and abroad, are some of the leading producers of musical theatre in the world, and include theatres, presenting organizations, higher education programs and individual producers.

Madison Claire Parks (Cynthia Weil) is thrilled to make her Gulfshore debut in a role she has wanted to play for the last 10+ years! Madison recently completed her two year run and over 700 performances understudying Glinda in the Broadway National Tour of Wicked. Off-Broadway, Madison starred as Luisa in the historic long-running production of The Fantasticks, Genevieve in the New York premiere of The Bakers Wife with J2 Spotlight, and as Katherine in The Day Before Spring with The York Theatre Company. She most recently returned OffBroadway to The York in the new musical, Monte Cristo. Oliver Prose (Barry Mann) is an actor/singer based in Brooklyn, NY. He originated the role of Alex Mann in the Kander and Ebb musical New York, New York on Broadway. Other acting credits include: Fiddler on the Roof (Alliance Theater), Jesus Christ Superstar (Fulton Theater), Master Harold…and the Boys (Arizona Theater Company), Footloose (Maine State Music Theater), and Kimberly Akimbo (AEA 29-hour Reading). He has performed in concerts at venues such as 54 Below, Joe’s Pub, Lincoln Center, and The Green Room 42. He is a graduate of NYU Tisch with a BFA in Drama.

Abe Goldfarb (Don Kirshner) is an actor, writer and director based in Brooklyn, NY. He studied at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. He's been on Broadway (in Beetlejuice), voiced Pokémon (several) and emceed burlesque shows all over the world (seriously). He’s written and acted for IFC’s Neurotica and directed two features, The Horror at Gallery Kay and the multiple award-winning First Time Caller (with J.D. Brynn), in which he also starred. Reggie Bromell (Drifter) is grateful to be making his debut at Gulfshore Playhouse. Originally from New Jersey and currently a NYC based actor, Reggie's career has taken him across the country and abroad. John Conway (Assistant Music Director/Keyboard II) began studying piano in his early teens, spending thirty minutes a day on the prescribed lesson material and another two hours in Elton, Billy, Joni, and Carole songbooks. The first record he bought was Isaac Hayes’ soundtrack from Shaft. After spending several years in more than a few bands, he figured on giving musical theatre orchestras a try. Through this involvement, he’s experienced all 50 states and 20 something countries (give or take). Prouder moments include serving as AMD/key 1 on AMT San Jose’s production of Children of Eden and the world premiere of Memphis at North Shore Music Theatre. Less proud moments include tickling the ivories in the men’s suits and furnishings foyer of west coast department stores (actually-for a day gig, one could do worse). Johanna Pan (Costume Designer) is a costume and sometimes scenic designer for Theatre, Film, Dance and Opera, a textile and visual artist. They first discovered theatrical design while competing in the creative thinking competition Odyssey of the Mind and has never looked back. Johanna’s artistic practice is centered around decolonizing the imagination, breaking down the notions of feminized labor, and anti-racism. Erica Mansfield (Intimacy Director) is thrilled to return to Gulfshore Playhouse, where she previously served as Intimacy Director for Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, Sweet Charity, She Loves Me, Anything Goes, Dial M for Murder, and Noises Off. Currently, her work can be seen in the touring production of Mamma Mia! as both cast member and Intimacy Director. Other recent intimacy direction projects include the Memoirs of an Amorous Gentleman workshop directed by Rob Ashford and Almost Famous at ACT. She trained with IDC and is also a certified Lactation Education Counselor, yoga teacher, Pilates mat instructor, and visual stylist for Hearst news stations. On the creative team side, Erica has worked as Associate Director/ Choreographer on Jersey Boys at Casa Mañana, Phantom at WBT, and Fiddler on the Roof at both Paper Mill Playhouse and The Muny. Danny Kuenzel (Production Stage Manager) is back once again managing her second production of Beautiful The Carole King Musical. This is also her third production of the Gulfshore Playhouse 2025-26 season having already completed White Christmas and the world premiere of Circle Forward. Prior to this season she managed GP’s Sweet Charity, Dial M for Murder, Anything Goes, Into the Breeches, Winter Wonderettes, Barefoot in the Park, Steel Magnolias, The 39 Steps, Another Revolution, and Bedlam’s Saint Joan. Other regional credits include: Saugatuck Center for the Arts, Mason Street Warehouse, Clarence Brown Theatre, Arkansas Repertory Theatre, Pioneer Theatre Company, Indiana Repertory Theatre, Weston Playhouse Theatre Company, The Alley Theatre, Drury Lane Oakbrook, and the Contemporary American Theatre Festival. Meg Lydon (Production Stage Manager) is so excited to be calling her first show here at Gulfshore! Meg works as a freelance stage manager and events technician, and is currently based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Recent work has been at the Neptune and Spatz Theatres in Halifax, and at Portland Stage in Maine, where she worked on about 18 productions over the last five years. Joel Markus (COO & Managing Director) is thrilled to be in his eighth season as Gulfshore Playhouse’s COO & Managing Director. Joel enjoys working side by side with Kristen to produce Broadway caliber theatre while focusing on cultivating a great staff and culture. In his time at Gulfshore Playhouse, Joel has helped grow and quadruple the theatre’s budget, triple the staff, has co-managed the design and construction of the new $75M Baker Theatre and Education Center, the production shop construction project, has been instrumental in joining LORT (most recently, being on the negotiating committee for LORT and Actors’ Equity Association), and navigated and guided the organization through the pandemic and Hurricane Ian. Joel was recognized as one of the top COOs in SWFL by the Community Foundation. Joel’s thirty year career has taken him to some of our nation’s leading professional regional theatres. He most recently spent seven seasons at America’s oldest theatre, Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia. Joel has played integral roles in the production of hundreds of plays over ten seasons at the Indiana Repertory Theatre, four years at Geva Theatre Center in Rochester, NY, five summers at the Weston Playhouse in Vermont, American Players Theatre in Spring Green, Wisconsin, and North Shore Music Theatre in Beverly, Massachusetts. Joel is a graduate of Indiana University and originally from Miami, Florida.

Kristen Coury (CEO& Producing Artistic Director) is the Founder, CEO and Producing Artistic Director of Gulfshore Playhouse. She founded the Playhouse in 2004, and shortly thereafter started producing with no staff and virtually no funding. Under her leadership, the Playhouse has grown to a staff of 83 people with an annual budget of $14.5M with no long-term debt. Kristen led the charge to create the iconic $75M state-of-the-art Baker Theatre and Education Center at the gateway to downtown Naples, which opened on November 1st, 2024. As part of this project, Coury ignited one of the largest public/private partnerships in City of Naples history, initiating a land-swap with the Wynn family and subsequently donating over an acre of land to the City upon which to build a public parking garage. While in New York, she worked on Broadway for Walt Disney Theatrical Productions, and for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s company, The Really Useful Group, and made her feature film directorial debut with an independent film entitled Friends and Family. Kristen is also a frequent investor in Broadway productions, most recently A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical. Kristen has directed nearly 50 productions for the Playhouse. Most recently, she directed the inaugural show in the Baker Theatre and Education Center, Anything Goes. This season, she also directed Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest. Kristen was named one of the Men and Women of the Year by Gulfshore Life in 2013 and again in 2024. She also received the Murray Hendel Award for Civic Achievement in 2023. She served two terms on the board of Theatre Communications Group, the national advocacy group for professional theatre and is currently a member of the board of the Greater Naples Chamber of Commerce. Kristen is very honored to have been appointed to Florida Council for arts and culture by Senate President Kathleen Passidomo. She was named one of the Top 100 Most Influential Business Leaders in Collier County by Naples Illustrated for the last four years, and, this year, was listed in the 2025 Edition of Florida Trend Magazine as one of the 500 Most Influential Business Leaders in the State of Florida.

The Life and Career of Carole King

Carol Joan Klein is born on February 9th in Manhattan to Eugenia and Sidney Klein.

While attending high school, she forms a band called the Co-Sines and changes her name from Carol Klein to Carole King.

King meets Gerry Goffin while attending Queens College. She also records her first song, “The Right Girl,” for ABC Paramount under the name Carole King.

The song “Oh! Carol!” by King’s ex-boyfriend, Neil Sedaka, is a top-10 hit; its success inspires her to pursue her own songwriting career. King and Goffin join the staff at Aldon Music, the publishing company founded by Don Kirshner, where they meet lyricist Cynthia Weil and songwriter Barry Mann.

King and Goffin get married after she becomes pregnant with their first child.

Their daughter, Louise, is born in March.

King and Goffin write “Will You Love Me Tomorrow” for The Shirelles. The song becomes a no. 1 Billboard hit, the first song by a Black girl group to do so.

Don Kirshner launches the label Dimension Records and signs Goffin and King as a songwriting team. For Aldon and Dimension Records, they write a string of hits including “The Loco-Motion” by Little Eva, “One Fine Day” by the Chiffons, and “Natural Woman” by Aretha Franklin.

Many of the chart-topping hits from the late 1950s and early 1960s are part of a genre known today as the “Brill Building sound.” This is a reference to the Brill Building in Manhattan, which housed more than 160 tenants from the music industry. It’s a bit of a misnomer because just as much music was actually written and recorded in a less architecturally significant building across the street at 1650 Broadway, where much of Beautiful is set.

The countless, ear-catching hits of this genre were the product of a multicultural melding. Many of the songwriters, like King and Goffin, were Jewish Brooklynites who grew up listening to Tin Pan Alley artists like Irving Berlin but were influenced by the fresh sounds of rhythm and blues, rock “n” roll, and Latin music. Many of their songs were made famous by Black recording artists, and interestingly, the songwriting roster included an unprecedented number of women.

“Expressing the optimism and outrage of the early civil rights movement, [the Brill Building catalog] amalgamated black, white and Latino sounds before multiculturalism became a concept…and integrated audiences before America desegregated its schools.” Always Magic in the Air: the Bomp and Brilliance of the Brill Building Era by Ken Emerson.

King moves to Laurel Canyon with her two daughters after separating from Gerry Goffin. She forms The City group, a shortlived music trio.

King meets James Taylor who becomes one of her most frequent collaborators.

Tapestry, her second solo album, is released and tops the Billboard charts for 15 weeks, wins four Grammy Awards, and has since sold more than 25 million copies worldwide.

Behind the Music

BARRY MANN AND CYNTHIA WEIL met at Aldon Music and formed a lifelong professional and personal partnership. Together, they wrote songs like You’ve Lost "That Lovin’ Feeling" and "On Broadway" in addition to numerous other chart-topping hits. They also composed and wrote songs for movies, most notably “Somewhere Out There” for the 1986 animated film An American Tail, which won two Grammy Awards and was nominated for an Oscar. In 2004, they created a musical revue called They Wrote That? They were married until Cynthia’s death in 2023.

DON KIRSHNER was dubbed “the Man with the Golden Ear” by Time. An American music publisher and producer who founded Aldon Music with Al Nevins in 1958, and contracted several of the most important songwriters of the “Brill Building” school, including Carole King, Gerry Goffin, Neil Sedaka, Neil Diamond, Paul Simon, Phil Spector, Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil, and more.

THE DRIFTERS were formed in 1953 to serve as backing for Clyde McPhatter and are still active today. The group has featured 60 different vocalists across 65 years. Rudy Lewis led the Drifters for their hit song “On Broadway” in 1963, which reached number 5 on the pop charts and number 4 on the R&B chart. Their most successful single was “Under the Boardwalk” which was recorded in 1964.

GERRY GOFFIN was a lyricist who met Carole when they were students at Queens College in 1958. After he passed away in 2014, King said, “His words expressed what so many people were feeling but didn’t know how to say.” He’d been writing lyrics since he was a boy, but it wasn’t until he met Carole that he was able to put music to them. They continued working together for a time after their divorce in 1960, but eventually their partnership dissolved. However, three of the songs on Tapestry were Goffin-King collaborations. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. He passed away in 2014.

LITTLE EVA was born Eva Narcissus Boyd. She grew up near Brighton Beach in Brooklyn. She was nicknamed “Little Eva” because she was named after her aunt, also named Eva. Her music career began when she auditioned as a singer for The Cookies, singing “Will You Love Me Tomorrow?” and joined that group as a backup vocalist on recording days. King and Goffin hired Little Eva as a babysitter for $35 a week and later asked her to record the demo for “The Loco-Motion” but when Don Kirshner heard it, he decided to release it as a single. The song became a #1 Billboard hit in August 1962. She continued touring and releasing records until 1971 when she retired from the business to spend time with her children. She passed away in 2003.

THE SHIRELLES were an American girl group, one of the first to achieve mainstream success with their no. 1 hit “Will You Love Me Tomorrow?” The group consisted of four members: Shirley Owens, Doris Coley, Beverly Lee, and Addie “Micki” Harris. Despite their success, they faced discrimination and racism, often paid less than their male counterparts and getting barred from performance venues due to their race. The group disbanded in the late 1960s after producing numerous hits. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.

THE RIGHTEOUS BROTHERS was the musical duo of Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield whose sound was sometimes dubbed “blueeyed soul.” Their first major hit was “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’,” produced by Phil Spector, was one of the most successful pop singles of its time and remains one of the most played songs in radio history.
