up to $100,000 to stage. “The whole idea is to create here on the beach, little areas that are like high-end resort type,” Zislin said. Because of the ever-expanding footprint of the festival, Hangout organizers also received permission to sell 5,000 more tickets, making the total available now 40,000.

s soon as spring arrives and the temperatures start warming, I search for nearby weekend destinations to explore. One nice place to visit during the shoulder seasons is the Bartram Canoe Trail, located in the Mobile-Tensaw Delta, which is the second largest river delta in the country. Last October, I made the trip and drove north of Stockton to the French’s Lake Coastal Access Kiosk. From here, I launched my kayak and paddled with a friend to the Canal Island overnight floating platform. We saw more alligators than fellow paddlers on the water, but it only added to the excitement as the gators sneakily surfaced and then quickly submerged again. The Bartram Canoe Trail offers many day-use trails as well as overnight trails, which include either land-based or floating campsites. Overall, the unique ecosystems and winding waterways are enjoyable to all outdoor enthusiasts. The cypress-tupelo swamps are always my favorite. Kayaks or canoes should be used to access most trails because of small creeks and shallow water depths.

Bartram explored much of the territory that is now North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Tennessee. pring in South Alabama brings beautiful beach weather, time with the family and excellent surf fishing for one of the feistiest little fish in our Coastal Alabama waters. During the spring and fall, the Gulf of Mexico shoreline is teeming with schools of these silvery delicacies as they migrate along the coast. Pompano prefer staying close to the second trough, where they can feed freely on small bait. The best gear for catching Pompano is light fishing tackle and live bait, but you can also have success with artificial bait. Look for “Pompano jigs” at local tackle shops. These jigs have tiny hooks and a heavier pound fishing line that easily hooks into their tiny, razor-sharp mouths. The jig’s swivel hook allows weight to be added and keeps the bait from tangling in rough surf. Many fisherman claim that pound for pound, Pompano are the hardest fighting fish in the Gulf of Mexico and are fun to catch. The petite fish filets are mild and sweet, making them one of the most expensive pieces of fish you can buy. So what are you waiting for? Grab you fishing gear and family and try your luck catching the feisty little Pompano.

Rob, who worked for many years as a nuclear engineer for a company in Philadelphia, always wanted to own his own business. “I commuted an hour each way and sat in a cubicle for 9 to 10 hours a day,” he says. “While I was sitting there, I would be daydreaming about how I could start a business.” Enter Rita's — a fast-growing nationwide franchise with more than 600 locations. The Tarrs decided to open the first franchise of Rita's in Alabama. “Rita's has such a superb product,” Rob says. “It is ranked No. 1 in Italian ice and frozen custard by Zagat. The reaction we've had so far has been a blessing. What is Italian Ice? Italian ice, also known as water ice, is a sweetened frozen dessert made with fruit (Rita’s is made fresh daily with real fruit). It is not shaved ice that has been flavored, but rather is made from the same process as ice cream: freezing the ingredients while mixing them. What is frozen custard? Frozen custard is similar to ice cream, but is made with eggs in addition to cream and sugar. It contains at least 10 percent milkfat and 1.4 percent egg yolk solids. It is much more dense, creamy and smooth than ice cream and has no air pumped into the mix.

Watch sand volleyball players battle for championship Sand volleyball is quickly growing in popularity, and Gulf Shores is hosting one of the sport’s biggest events. May 2–4, Gulf Shores Public Beach will be the site of the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s (AVCA) Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championships, and locals and beach visitors alike are invited to watch the matches for free. In conjunction with the AVCA event, the Gulf Coast Region of USA Volleyball will host a Junior Club and Open Division Beach Volleyball Tournament that will hit the beach on Saturday and Sunday, and an adult tournament will take place on Saturday. These club teams are comprised of athletes who aspire to reach an elite Olympic level. Spectators are encouraged to cheer on these youth and adult athletes as they battle it out to win the series title.
Mobile Heart Ball: a night out that's good for your heart

he annual Mobile Heart Ball celebrates the work, mission and lives saved through donations to the American Heart Association. Last year, funds raised by the nationwide Heart Ball campaign helped the American Heart Association fund more than $123 million in research and programs around the country. This year, the Mobile event’s organizers will honor Springhill Medical Center CEO Jeff St. Clair and Pediat-
ric Cardiologist Dr. Lynn Batten for their work in advancing heart health. Two-year-old Robert Faulkner, a heart surgery survivor, will also be honored as the year’s “Face of Heart” award recipient. St. Clair and the Springhill Medical team raised more than $60,000 during the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk at the University of South Alabama in October. Batten is recognized as a leading pediatric cardiologist in the Mobile area, who diagnoses and treats heart conditions in children, including heart disease and congenital heart defects.

heatre 98’s production of a new version of Robert Louis Stevenson's “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” written by Jeffrey Hatcher and directed by Jonne Thornton, takes the story in unexpected directions. Idealistic young Dr. Jekyll has discovered a way to separate out his subconscious dark impulses, but there turns out to be a heavy price. Evil Mr. Hyde, his alter-ego, is played by four different actors, male and female. This play, with its erotically charged love story, asks us whether good and evil can be divisible — or whether they are more intermingled than we like to think. The staging is intensely theatrical, with 19th century London created by special lighting and sound effects, music, projections and Becky Thornton’s impeccable costumes. This show is not suitable for children younger than highschool age.

f you like gumbo and you like competition and you like live music and being outdoors in the spring and mom — who doesn’t like mom? — then you’re likely to like the LA Gumbo Fest. LA stands for two things, Lower Alabama and Louisiana, and the two will battle for the title of best gumbo. The festival is the creation of Restaurateur Bob Baumhower, the famed owner of several restaurant brands under the tent of Aloha Hospitality, and Louisiana Chef John Folse. The competition will be fierce, resulting in some delicious gumbo. “Bragging rights are a big deal in these parts, and that goes for chefs, too,” Baumhower said. The festival also offers arts and crafts vendors and live music.

in Liberty Park, just a short walk from our house. My father walked me down the road and there were men, women and children all dressed in white. Even the horses had Klan robes. My father didn’t agree with their views, but he knew it would be important I saw what was going on, saw what would become history. CM: What would you say to readers who might be leery of a book that brings up the violence and hatred of Civil Rights Mississippi? GI: If I want to say anything, so much attention is coming to it because of the Civil Rights angle. It’s still very much a thriller, but the background very much is woven through events that represent that era. People are going to think they don’t want to read this because of the horrible things associated with that era, but there can be good to come out of that darkness.

It’s been 10 years since the movie “Sideways” brought Pinot Noir to the forefront and became the wine of choice for many. Before that, this noble grape was just another misunderstood varietal associated primarily as a blending grape in Burgundy wine. The name is derived from the French words pinot (pine) and noir (black) because the fruit is tightly clustered in the shape of pine cones. Pinot Noir prefers a cool climate indicative of its homeland, Burgundy. Oregon’s Willamette Valley, being on the same parallel as Burgundy, also produces an exceptional Pinot Noir, as does the Pacific coast of California. Pinot Noir is the perfect varietal to help you understand acidity and aromatics in red wine. When young, red fruit aromas such as raspberry or strawberry shine through, and as it matures, Pinot Noir exhibits a mushroomy earthiness. Pinot Noir is the ultimate food wine and goes well with leaner meats like veal, chicken, turkey or pork. It also pairs nicely with smoked meats.

Of all the comments I’ve ever heard about beer, this one is the most telling. If you ever make a sweeping generalization about anything to the tune of this statement, you are admitting that you just haven’t given it a fair shake. The common misconception is that dark beers are all mouth-puckeringly bitter, sit-like-a-brick heavy and unappetizing in appearance. Let me share with you a few styles of dark beer that may change that perception.

Stouts
Guiness is the one with which you’re likely most familiar. Yes, it is black and has a thick, creamy mouthfeel. No, it will not fill you up like you just ate Thanksgiving dinner. The low alcohol content and lack of calories (fewer calories than Budweiser) make this a fantastic session beer. Make sure to get this beer on tap. Just say no to cans or bottles.
Brown Ales
This style is a good introduction to a beer that isn’t yellow and watery. Brown ales feature a mild, malty sweetness and only the slightest hoppy bitterness. Good examples of brown ales are Newcastle or Clown Shoes’ Brown Angel.
Porters
This style is the grandfather of the stout. Typically, porters have a light mouthfeel and a pronounced malty flavor. A good example of this style is Back Forty’s Kudzu Porter.

aul Duncan, artist and board member of the Foley Performing Arts Center, brought the idea of Art in the Park to the quaint town of Foley in 1972. “Back when Art in the Park first began, the arts center was not very old,” said Linda Conier, chairman of the Foley Performing Arts Center. “In the beginning, it was for people who lived locally. We sent out applications to the show, people would come and pick a spot, set up and we would go with the show.” The event eventually reached the ears of artists in the surround-
ing area. “Over the years it grew and grew,” Conier said. “Sometime in the early 90’s, we switched over to a juried show and we didn’t take just anyone. We then had categories, and when we filled those categories we had a waiting list.” The event has always taken place under the prominent oak trees in John B. Foley park. “We have continued to be a smaller show, but a quality show,” Conier said. “We try to limit the number of different types of exhibitors so the people who shop can get a good look at the variety of things. With all of the high-quality vendors, it should be a terrific show.”
