GTCC 2024-2025 Impact Report

Page 1

A Message from the PRESIDENT

Dear GTCC Community and Supporters,

As we close one chapter and begin another, I am thrilled to reflect on the amazing progress and achievements of Guilford Technical Community College over the past year. Every day, we remain steadfast in our mission to transform lives through People, Pathways, and Partnerships—creating opportunities that empower our students, strengthen our community, and drive regional growth.

In this impact report, you’ll find inspiring stories of students and faculty excelling at GTCC, alumni thriving in the workforce and at higher education institutions, and the critical partnerships that make our mission possible. These stories highlight the collective impact of thousands of supporters and advocates who are committed to expanding access to quality education and workforce training in our community and beyond.

This past year also marked the completion of our 2019-2025 strategic plan—a milestone for which we are incredibly proud. As we implemented the plan, we met unforeseen challenges. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we shifted services and programs to continue to meet our students’ needs. By the end of the plan we recovered all enrollment from the pandemic and actually increased total enrollment by 6% during the plan’s implementation. From enhancing pathways for student success to fostering an inclusive workplace and a culture of continuous improvement, this strategic plan has left a legacy of achievement and positioned us for a bright future.

Looking ahead, we launched our new strategic plan in July 2025. This plan is the result of a comprehensive and inclusive process that engaged students, faculty, staff, local employers, and community members through surveys, focus groups, advisory board meetings, and employee and student forums. By amplifying the voices of our entire college community, especially those often underrepresented in institutional planning, we have crafted a bold vision, new values, and ambitious goals that will guide us in supporting student success and driving regional vitality.

I am deeply grateful for the dedication and generosity of our faculty, staff, donors, industry partners, and community leaders. Your unwavering support enables us to expand access, enhance student success, and create pathways to brighter futures. Together, we are building on a foundation of excellence and innovation, ensuring that GTCC remains a vital force for education and economic growth in our region.

Thank you for being an essential part of this journey. With your continued support, we will reach even greater heights and make an even greater impact. Let us move forward together, united in our mission to transform lives through People, Pathways, and Partnerships

Sincerely,

GTCC joins other community colleges across North Carolina to support Haywood Community College

When Hurricane Helene struck western North Carolina, it left Haywood Community College (HCC) reeling. To aid the recovery, GTCC joined a cohort of community colleges across North Carolina to support HCC.

The teams raised funds for employees and students who lost nearly everything. GTCC launched a campaign that rallied faculty, staff, students, and supporters to donate to the cause raising $20,000 toward the state-wide effort, showcasing the sense of community and care that runs through the college.

In addition, GTCC departments adopted Haywood families for the holidays providing essentials and gifts, ranging from clothing to baby food to presents for the children of those families.

The outpouring of support from our Titan family for our friends at Haywood Community College demonstrates the true spirit of solidarity that defines our community college system in North Carolina.

GTCC paralegal professor and student lend legal expertise to support displaced residents in western North Carolina

With the overwhelming number of requests from residents seeking assistance in filling out FEMA applications, Pisgah Legal Services sent out a cry for help and GTCC Assistant Professor of Paralegal Technology Kathy Ronnenberg, JD, answered the call.

“Pisgah Legal Services’ goal was to assist folks filling out their initial FEMA application … and then helping with the longer application for recovery and relief funds,” shared Ronnenberg.

One paralegal certificate student, Stefanie Greenhill, Ph.D., thought it would be a great opportunity to apply what she had learned in class.

“I think it’s definitely a great learning experience and I’m happy to take the opportunity to assist,” said Greenhill.

“The volunteers call everyone back on their individual lists and determine the problem, see what stage they’re in during the FEMA process, help them fill out the initial FEMA form, or get them to the right agency,” said Ronnenberg.

Trio of GTCC police officers provide vital support in post-hurricane mountains of North Carolina

Relieving exhausted first responders was another essential and specialized need in western North Carolina, and the GTCC police force responded.

“I believe our job as police officers is to serve the community, not just the community in which we live or work,” said GTCC Police Chief Gene Sapino.

The GTCC police force dispatched three officers, George Smith, Alex Stout, and William Wallace, to Black Mountain, North Carolina.

“It was still very rough when we got there,” said Stout, who along with Wallace and Smith arrived in the Black Mountain area three weeks after the storm. “You could look one moment, and it didn’t look like anything had happened, and then, around the next turn, nothing was there.”

The trio of GTCC officers provided support for the Black Mountain police force and law enforcement officers from other areas who were already in place.

UNC graduate student says GTCC was the perfect education springboard for him

Neil Sharma's academic path from GTCC to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) serves as a powerful testament to what is possible through perseverance.

GTCC offered him the perfect opportunity to experiment with different subjects and discover his interests among like-minded students.

"I was among students of all ages, all trying to find their place in the world, just like I was.”

His passion for higher education accessibility continues to guide him as a UNC grad student in public policy and a fellow at the Belk Center for Community College Research.

“GTCC showed me that my dreams were possible,” Sharma reflects. “I went from feeling lost to realizing I could have an impact on the world. And that’s a lesson I’ll carry with me always.”

GTCC dual-enrolled alum speaks at 59th college commencement

Four years after crossing the GTCC graduation stage with an associate degree in general science, Maurice Furet returned to the college as the 59th commencement speaker.

When Furet accepted his diploma from GTCC President, Dr. Anthony Clarke, in May 2021, he wasn’t even a high school graduate yet.

“I wasn’t quite sure yet if I wanted to be a doctor but knew it would take a lot of money to earn the physician title, so being a dual-enrolled high school student was a great opportunity,” Furet shared.

Earning an associate degree in high school provided financial savings by allowing him to enter North Carolina State University as a junior, but also provided leadership opportunities, becoming the youngest GTCC student government president.

“I really enjoyed my service in the presidential role, as I struggled with selfdoubt during that time,” Furet shared.

Furet graduated from N.C. State in 2023 with a bachelor's in biochemistry and today, is applying to medical schools while working as a research associate and lab manager at The Ohio State University.

“I was honored to be able to come back to GTCC. As a young minority male, every opportunity that brought me to where I am now is because of GTCC.”

With mentorship from GTCC graduate, Logan on her way to career

as auto body technician

When Chloe Logan began her apprenticeship in the body shop at Terry Labonte Chevrolet, she was admittedly nervous, even apprehensive about her career path.

But little did she know that her future mentor had walked the exact same path.

Logan, an apprentice with Terry Labonte Chevrolet and a student at GTCC, is being mentored by Cristal Hernandez, who graduated from the same program in 2015.

“I try to give her the ins and outs and let her know it’s not that scary, that it is a lot of fun and there’s great money and benefits,” Hernandez said.

“My parents were excited for me, excited to see me flourish in a position like this, excited to see what I could do,” Logan shared.

That excitement continued when Logan won the 2024 SkillsUSA North Carolina state title for automotive refinishing technology and followed that up by finishing eighth out of 28 entrants in the SkillsUSA national competition in Atlanta.

GTCC’s HVACR program helps land Michael Bullard a career keeping the stars cool

Michael Bullard knew that when he graduated from Northeast High School, he wanted to work in the HVACR business. He didn’t realize, though, that the career could take him to the bright lights of Broadway productions and sold-out concerts.

Bullard’s job these days is ensuring a cool environment for performers and patrons at the Tanger Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Greensboro, North Carolina, thanks to a solid education at GTCC, and a supportive employer.

The 25-year-old graduated from Guilford Apprenticeship Partners and GTCC in 2022 with an associate degree

and a journeyman certificate in HVACR. He then transitioned from apprentice to service technician with Brady Services.

“I felt well-prepared for real-world HVACR work when I left GTCC. The program gave me a strong foundation,” said Bullard. “While in school, I was also working with Brady which gave me hands-on experience with commercial equipment.”

GTCC graduate Kevin Neff’s career at Walt Disney Resort takes magical turn

For a few years, Kevin Neff, a graduate of GTCC’s entertainment technologies concert, sound and lighting program, has been enjoying a job with Walt Disney Resort in Florida.

Neff is still with Disney, but his career continues to blossom for the former Winston-Salem policeman.

When he began his position, he was the lighting technician at

EPCOT. Neff is now working at Magic Kingdom, and his job is truly magical and is part of the the end-of-the-day lighting, laser, and video show down Main Street, U.S.A.

“Every once in a while, I like to go out and watch the show. I love being out there listening and watching the crowd. There are tens of thousands of people every night. I like being part of that. It is very rewarding,” said Neff. “Going into (GTCC) I didn’t really know anything about lighting or audio, other than thinking it was really cool,” said Neff. The program, the school, got me to the point where I am now. Going to GTCC was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.”

Trio of female veterans finds GTCC is the perfect place to pursue higher education after leaving the military

Shaylin Grady, Alexandria Harris, and Qualisha Trotter were all looking for the best possible place to build careers after serving in the U.S. military. All three women gravitated to GTCC.

Grady is an Army veteran. Harris served in the Navy and Trotter in the Air Force. They took different routes before arriving at GTCC. Harris, 32, has a degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) and joined the Navy after graduation. Trotter, also 32, enlisted right out of high school, as did the 26-year-old Grady.

“I was kind of lost in the Medlin Center, looking for the Veteran’s Resource Center (VRC). I met the staff and knew I needed to keep in contact with everyone,” said Harris. “I hadn’t been to regular college in years. School was new to me again. I had a lot of questions, and they helped me along the way.”

Grady, originally from Port Charlotte, Florida, was a combat engineer in the 82nd Airborne Division and deployed to Afghanistan for nine months. She served three and a half years before leaving the Army in 2019.

Grady has also used the VRC and considers it a key to success in her transition back to the classroom.

“The staff in the Veteran’s Resource Center have always been so welcoming to me,” said Grady. “I was hesitant to use their tutoring service, but I needed help in my math classes, and they were great.”

Harris, who graduated from Grimsley High School, earned a therapeutic recreation degree from UNCG in 2014, then opted to join the Navy.

“My goal in joining the Navy was to get more schooling. I wanted to become an occupational therapist (OT). I joined the military to help me get into the occupational therapist door,” said Harris.

She completed an OT assistant program through the Navy, but after a few years in the field, received a medical discharge in 2022 because of a shoulder injury. She began GTCC’s medical billing and coding program in August 2023, a less physical job in the same field.

“I didn’t expect community college to be this handson,” said Harris. “It helps me get through this major. This major is harder than I thought. My advisor and my classmates are really helping me get through this program.

Trotter is a single mother and needed a degree program that would help guarantee career and financial stability. GTCC’s health information technology program was a perfect fit.

“My transition back to the classroom wasn’t as tough as it could have been because everyone has been so accommodating,” said Trotter. “I’ve used the resource center several times, and they have always been so helpful. It’s certainly made a huge difference for me.”

GTCC’s public safety administration program opening new opportunities for law enforcement veteran Christa

Destiny Christa has years of law enforcement experience, working mostly in the state and federal correctional systems.

Now, the 27-year-old New York native is back in the classroom, augmenting her on-the-job training with classroom experiences through GTCC’s public safety administration curriculum.

“I’ve been wanting to go back to school for a few years now,” said Christa. “I saw GTCC had the classes I was interested in, and I pulled the trigger.”

“When Destiny joined the program, she shared that she was interested in learning about the administrative side of public safety,” said Esteban Soto, public safety administration instructor. “In the public safety administration program, she’s learning how to lead and manage personnel, manage resources including budgets, and develop and analyze policies, all while using best practices and in an ethical manner.”

GTCC’s public safety administration curriculum is designed to provide students with knowledge and skills in the technical, managerial, and administrative areas necessary for entrance or advancement within various public safety and government organizations.

“I was interested in being able to get more well-versed in the administrative side of things instead of just the criminal justice side. This gives me the best of both worlds.”

Beth Pitonzo, Ph.D. of GTCC selected for the Aspen Institute’s Rising Presidents Fellowship

In June 2025, the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program (Aspen) announced that Beth Pitonzo, Ph.D., senior vice president of instruction at Guilford Technical Community College, was one of 40 leaders selected for the 2025-26 Aspen Rising Presidents Fellowship.

Selected from among over 120 applicants, fellows will learn from — and apply to their own contexts to — lessons from over a dozen years of Aspen research about how to lead an institution to higher and more equitable levels of student success.

“GTCC has a long history of seeking and implementing innovative approaches to improve the student experience and I have been privileged to serve as senior vice president of instruction for the past 13 years,” shared Pitonzo. “I look forward to continuing the college’s transformative journey through my participation in the Aspen Institute’s Rising President’s Fellowship where I hope to learn new ideas and strategies from higher education professionals and colleague participants from across the nation.”

According to Aspen Institute, this class of Aspen Presidential Fellows represent the next generation of college leaders. The institutions they represent are in 19 states and range from small rural to large urban colleges. The fellows will work closely with community college presidents and thought leaders over 10 months to learn from field-leading research that:

• Examine demographic and labor market conditions in their communities

• Assess student outcomes at their colleges

• Advance a clear vision for positive outcomes for all students while in college and after they graduate.

“Dr. Beth Pitonzo is a thoughtful, dynamic leader who is well-deserving of joining the Aspen Institute’s Rising Presidents Fellowship,” said GTCC President, Dr. Anthony Clarke “She will bring a wealth of knowledge to the program and is ready to learn new concepts and practices that will help Guilford Technical Community College continue to inspire all students to achieve their educational and career goals.”

New GTCC Aviation Center

In response to the growing demand for aviation manufacturing in Guilford County, GTCC initiated plans in 2021 to expand its aviation programs with a state-of-theart training facility. Located on GTCC's Cameron Campus in Colfax, North Carolina — just minutes from Piedmont Triad International Airport (PTIA) — this facility reflects GTCC’s dedication to supporting the region's thriving aviation industry.

Phase One (building one) The $34.6 million, 70,000-square-foot training center will relocate and expand GTCC’s training facilities for growing technologies in composites, structures, and assembly, and will house the aviation manufacturing and avionics programs. The addition of building one will increase GTCC’s capacity by 40%, allowing the college to serve over 700 students annually. The project is slated to kick off in fall 2025 and is expected to open in spring 2027.

Phase Two (building two) will cost $60 million and add another 70,000 square feet of training space next to building one. This will increase the college’s training capacity by 66%, enabling GTCC to support over 1,000 students in aviation and aerospace manufacturing annually.

Lt. Gov. Rachel Hunt makes college tour stop at GTCC

This is absolutely what we

need in the state. Because it's the workforce of the future.

In the spring of 2025, Lt. Gov. Rachel Hunt stopped by GTCC as part of her "Future-Ready Community College Tour” supporting workforce development programs across the state.

GTCC Federation of Advanced Manufacturing Education (FAME) students showed her around the college’s FAME classroom, giving her a first-hand look at the advanced manufacturing skills they’re learning.

"Seeing these kids come out of high school and be able to do this program is just unbelievable to me," Hunt said. "It's so inspiring."

The lieutenant governor’s stop was part of her priority to promote funding into workforce development programs at community colleges across North Carolina.

GTCC student Evan Willien was grateful for that support.

"Manufacturing itself is very crucial," said Willien. "It's what helps us in every aspect of our lives."

Guilford Technical Community College receives reaffirmation of its accreditation from SACSCOC

In July 2025, GTCC received reaffirmation of its accreditation for the next 10 years from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) with no additional reports requested.

SACSCOC is the accrediting body in the 11 southern states for those institutions of higher education that award associate, baccalaureate, master’s, or doctoral degrees.

Reaccreditation demonstrates GTCC:

• has a mission appropriate to higher education

• offers resources programs

• services are sufficient to accomplish and sustain its mission

• maintains clearly specified educational objectives that are consistent with its mission and appropriate degrees it offers

• indicates whether it is successful in achieving its state objectives.

SACSCOC accreditation also allows GTCC to participate in federal and state financial aid programs.

In its report, SACSCOC praised GTCC’s institutional effectiveness program, saying it represents a best practice by engaging all stakeholders, including faculty, in a sustainable peer review process and it promotes strategies that support student learning measurement and efforts to seek improvement.

GTCC entertainment technology students release first record album

When Mark Dillon hatched the dream of a student-led record label at GTCC in 2024, he wasn’t exactly sure what the process would entail. The professor of music was sure, though, that he had students who could not only pull it off, but shine in the process.

Now, he has proof that dreams can come true as the student-led Ti-Tone Records label released its first album “Community.”

The 13-song album was written, performed, mixed, mastered, and recorded entirely by GTCC students, staff, and faculty members, with music majors providing background instrumentation.

“I didn’t really have a concept for the album, but in my mind, it was going to be 10 to 12 songs, and it was going to be an actual album,” said Dillon, who received a $4,500 Gladys S. Sears Award to fund the project.

With more than 50 students involved in the project, Dillon is ready to start on the label’s second album.

GTCC Early/Middle College at Greensboro breaks records with college scholarships in 2025

The class of 2025 at the GTCC Early/Middle College (EMC) at Greensboro wrapped its senior year earning $1,944,782 worth of scholarships, with 39 graduates.

The EMC is led by new principal Ashley Garcia, a Greensboro College Middle College graduate who knows the value of what they achieved.

In addition to earning their high school diplomas, the class of 2025 GTCC EMC at Greensboro had:

Garcia is a Greensboro native who completed her first two years of college on the Jamestown GTCC campus, later earning degrees from the UNCG and the UNCW. Now in her 19th year in education, she says leading the GTCC EMC at Greensboro is a full-circle experience, allowing her to support students on the same path she once walked.

Two students (5%) earn technical diplomas

100% of graduates leave EMC with college credits

Every graduate got a head start on their future — saving time, money, and setting the stage for success.

Driving Student Success: How Your Support Creates Lasting Impact

When more than 500 students walk across the stage at GTCC's graduation ceremonies, they carry the collective generosity of our community. Since 2011, the GTCC Foundation Golf Classic has generated over $400,000 in scholarship support, transforming lives and building careers.

Your participation creates pathways for nurses, manufacturing technicians, and entrepreneurs who strengthen our workforce. As we tee off this year, we're investing in more success stories yet to be written.

Thank you for making student dreams a reality.

Building Tomorrow’s Workforce: GTCC’s Metallica Scholars Initiative Success

GTCC received a $25,000 Metallica Scholars Initiative grant for the third consecutive year, supporting approximately 25 students in career and technical education programs throughout 20242025. This recognition from All Within My Hands, Metallica's nonprofit foundation, highlights GTCC's commitment to workforce development and removing barriers for students pursuing skilled trades.

Over three years, GTCC has received $175,000 in total funding, directly supporting students in high-demand fields including aviation, construction, HVAC, mechatronics, welding, and truck driver training. With 55 Metallica Scholars served in 2023-2024 alone, this partnership addresses critical workforce shortages while helping students secure family-sustaining careers that strengthen the local economy.
