DEAR GEORGIA TECH FANS: Welcome to Bobby Dodd Stadium at Historic Grant Field, one of the nation’s most unique and beautiful college football settings. At each home game, your safety, comfort and convenience are paramount. This fan guide is intended to provide information about policies, procedures and services available to you when attending games on campus. I hope you’ll take the time to review it prior to your visit as it should answer many of your questions about gameday activities. Speaking of gameday, I’m confident that Yellow Jacket football will provide plenty of memorable moments this season as we combine head coach Paul Johnson’s high-powered offense with the aggressive defense favored by coordinator Ted Roof. Our home schedule offers plenty of challenges, and we’re excited to host ACC rivals Miami and Clemson at Grant Field, along with first-time visitor Georgia Southern on Family Weekend. Duke is our opponent on Hall of Fame Weekend, while we’ll battle Virginia on Homecoming.
Georgia Tech Director of Athletics Mike Bobinski

A defining characteristic of the very best football programs in the country is tremendous fan energy and enthusiasm. I look forward to seeing you on campus and please know that we want your visit to be safe and enjoyable. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact a member of our gameday staff. Head CoaCH Paul JoHnson IN HIS SEVENTH YEAR AT GEORGIA TECH
P
aul Johnson, who has led Georgia Tech to six consecutive bowl games and two ACC Championship Game appearances while breaking records with his spread option offense, enters his seventh year with the Yellow Jackets and his 18th year overall as a head coach. The only person named ACC Coach of the Year in his first two seasons in the league, Johnson has compiled a record of 47-32 in six seasons on the Flats. Johnson won more games in his first six seasons than any coach in Georgia Tech history. In 17 years overall as a head coach, with previous stops at Georgia Southern and Navy, Johnson owns a career record of 154-71. Among active FBS coaches, Johnson ranks 12th in career victories and 12th in winning percentage (.684). The mastermind behind Georgia Tech’s highoctane spread option offense, Johnson’s teams have ranked in the top six nationally in rushing offense each of the last six seasons. Since 2008, Georgia Tech has rushed for more yards than any team in college football. During the past six seasons combined, the Yellow Jackets have rushed for more than 24,000 yards — or the equivalent of 13.8 miles. Last season Georgia Tech finished 7-6 overall, 5-3 in the ACC, beating eventual Coastal Division champion Duke for the 10th straight season and topping Coastal rival North Carolina for the fifth consecutive year. The Yellow Jackets recorded two shutouts — 56-0 vs. ACC newcomer Syracuse and 70-0 vs. Elon — the first time since 1985 that Tech pitched two shutouts in one season. While Tech advanced to a bowl game for the 17th consecutive season, the Jackets were a play or two away from double-digit victories. Tech had the ball with a chance to tie or take the lead in the fourth quarter of losses to Virginia Tech, Miami and Georgia. Tech finished ranked in the top 10 in eight different national statistical categories, including sixth in rushing offense. In 2012, Georgia Tech struggled to a 2-4 start, which included a pair of heart-breaking overtime

But the Yellow Jackets turned it around during the second half of the season, erupting for 68 points at North Carolina en route to winning four straight conference games. By the time the dust cleared in late November, Tech was crowned Coastal Division champion and played in the ACC Championship Game. Statistically, the Yellow Jackets produced more yards of total offense and rushed for more yards than any team in school history, and averaged a school-record 40.0 points per game in conference play. The 7-7 season culminated with an upset win over Southern California, 21-7, in the Hyundai Sun Bowl. In 2011, Georgia Tech exceeded all expectations. After being picked to finish fourth in the ACC Coastal Division, the Yellow Jackets went 8-5, 5-3 in the ACC. With just 10 scholarship seniors on the roster, Tech bolted to a 6-0 start, setting school, ACC and NCAA records for offense along the way, and rising to as high as 13th in the national polls. In October, the Jackets handed sixth-ranked and eventual ACC champion Clemson a 31-17 home loss, a win that eventually helped Tech earn a bid to the Sun Bowl. In 2010, the Yellow Jackets — who lost four juniors to the 2010 NFL Draft and played the

Head CoaCH Paul JoHnson IN HIS SEVENTH YEAR AT GEORGIA TECH final four games without injured quarterback Joshua Nesbitt — finished 4-4 in the ACC and led the nation in rushing offense for the first time in school history. Two Yellow Jackets — senior center Sean Bedford and senior running back Anthony Allen — were named first-team All-ACC in 2010. The 2009 season was one of the most memorable in Yellow Jacket history despite fielding one of the youngest rosters in college football (just six scholarship seniors). After a mid-September loss at nationally ranked Miami when the Yellow Jackets played their third game in a 12-day span, Tech reeled off eight consecutive victories including a 5-0 record in October when it played four road games. A convincing 49-10 win at Duke on Nov. 14, clinched the ACC Coastal Division crown, then Tech defeated Clemson for a second time, this time in the ACC Championship Game in Tampa, Fla. That game was later vacated due to NCAA sanctions. Tech, which reached a national ranking as high as seventh, played in the FedEx Orange Bowl, its first appearance in a major bowl game since 1962. Along the way, the Yellow Jackets rolled up mind-boggling numbers on offense, ranking second nationally in rushing offense (295.4 ypg) and third in time of possession (33:49). Prior to the start of the 2008 season, Sports Illustrated projected Georgia Tech to finish 3-9 and the ACC media picked the Yellow Jackets to finish fourth in the Coastal Division. However, Johnson directed Tech to a 9-4 record, a share of the Coastal Division title and a Chick-fil-A Bowl berth. Johnson’s first Yellow Jacket team beat three nationally ranked opponents — Florida State, Miami and Georgia — during the final four games of the regular season. The win over Georgia snapped a seven-game losing streak to Tech’s in-state rival. Johnson’s first season at Georgia Tech was remarkable for a number of reasons. Not only did he and his staff install completely new offensive and defensive schemes, but Johnson inherited one of the nation’s youngest rosters, which included 76 freshmen and sophomores. The last one-third of the season, 16 of Tech’s 22

It is played by the band every game between the third and fourth quarter. • One of the most famous icons to appear in a Tech Cheerleading uniform is Marilyn Monroe. She appeared in a cheerleading sweater on the cover of Look magazine in September 1952. Grant Field AT BOBBY DODD STADIUM
G
eorgia Tech’s storied football facility has been a cornerstone of college football for more than 100 years. Cozily nestled amid Atlanta’s skyscrapers, Bobby Dodd Stadium at Historic Grant Field is easily one of the nation’s most unique settings for college football. Last fall, Georgia Tech celebrated Grant Field’s 100th anniversary. Originally built in 1913 by members of the Georgia Tech student body, Bobby Dodd Stadium at Historic Grant Field is the oldest on-campus stadium in NCAA Division I-A (FBS). Georgia Tech’s football facility was known as Grant Field until April 1988, when the Georgia State Board of Regents voted to add the name Bobby Dodd Stadium in honor of the legendary coach who guided the Rambling Wreck to its most illustrious football era. A member of the National Football Foundation College Football Hall of Fame, Dodd compiled a 165-64-8 record from 1945-66, and tutored 21 All-Americans as he led Tech to 13 bowl trips during his 22-year stay as head coach. Dodd served as Tech’s director of athletics from 1951-76 and then worked as a consultant for the alumni association until his death in 1988, for a 57-year association with the Institute. The name change was the first for the facility since it was named Hugh Inman Grant Field in 1914 after a gift from John W. Grant, a member of the Tech Board of Trustees and a well-known Atlanta merchant. The Grant family did not give the land on which Grant Field is built. However, they did give the initial $15,000 used in 1913 to build the first permanent concrete stands on the west side of the field. In gratitude for the gift, the Board of Trustees named the field Hugh
Inman Grant Field in memory of Grant’s deceased son. The students who built Grant Field more than 100 years ago wouldn’t recognize the home of Georgia Tech football if they saw it now. Not only has the skyline around the stadium changed dramatically, but the facility has steadily grown and improved during its rich history. Tech actually began playing football on this site in 1905, but in 1913, the original concrete West Stands were built by Tech students and seated 5,600. In the 101 autumns since Grant Field was erected, legends from Clint Castleberry to George Morris to Joe Hamilton to Calvin Johnson have played here, and Paul Johnson joins coaching giants such as John Heisman and Dodd in patrolling the Grant Field sideline. Four national title teams and 15 conference champions have showcased their skills on the Flats, and Grant Field was the site of one of the most famous games played, Tech’s 222-0 win over Cumberland in 1916. Today’s Bobby Dodd Stadium seats 55,000 fans in a modern, comfortable facility that embraces the tradition that has made Tech’s venerable stadium a cornerstone of college football for nearly a century. Tech TradiTions RAMBLIN’ WRECK FIGHT SONG
T
he Georgia Tech fight song grew out of an old folk ballad, “The Sons of the Gamboliers.” Howard D. Cutter, a member of Tech’s first graduating class (Mechanical Engineering, 1892), wrote in the NovemberDecember 1942 issue of the Georgia Tech Alumnus that the “Ramblin’ Wreck” had its origins during the first two years after Tech opened in 1888, inspired when the entire student body traveled to Athens to see Tech’s baseball team defeat Georgia. By the early 1900s, “Ramblin’ Wreck” was an established tradition. The earliest existing published version of the song appeared in the Blueprint, the Institute’s yearbook, in 1908. In 1910, Michael A. Greenblatt, Tech’s first bandmaster, discovered the band playing “Ramblin’ Wreck” to the tune of “Sons of the Gamboliers,” and made his first arrangement of the song in the form of a handwritten manuscript. When Frank Roman succeeded Greenblatt as bandmaster in 1911, he wrote a new adaptation of “Ramblin’ Wreck” accompanied by many trumpet flourishes, that became nationally known. His is the version that continues to be popular today. The fame of the song spread to such proportions that in 1959 it was sung by Richard Nixon and Nikita Khrushchev at their historic face-to-face meeting in Moscow. In 1984, the law firm of Newton, Hopkins & Ormsby investigated the copyright of “Ramblin’ Wreck” and found that a number of people have had various versions of the song copyrighted. The original version of

the song is in the public domain and can be played without payment of royalties. WHITE AND GOLD In the fall of 1891, before Georgia Tech organized a football team of its own, a game was scheduled between Auburn and Georgia. A rivalry was already established in baseball between Tech and Georgia, so Tech students were invited to the game to cheer, of course, for Auburn. The students appointed a committee to recommend colors to be worn and cheers to be used at the game. The committee suggested white and gold, and about 200 students attended wearing those colors. In 1893, when Georgia Tech’s football team played Georgia for the first time, a group of young women from the Lucy Cobb Institute for Girls attended the game to cheer for Tech, dressed in white and gold.
LYRICS I’m a Ramblin’ Wreck from Georgia Tech and a hell of an engineer, A helluva, helluva, helluva, helluva, hell of an engineer, Like all the jolly good fellows, I drink my whiskey clear, I’m a Ramblin’ Wreck from Georgia Tech and a hell of an engineer. Oh, if I had a daughter, sir, I’d dress her in White and Gold, And put her on the campus, to cheer the brave and bold. But if I had a son, sir, I’ll tell you what he’d do. He would yell, “To Hell with Georgia,” like his daddy used to do. Oh, I wish I had a barrel of rum and sugar three thousand pounds, A college bell to put it in and a clapper to stir it around. I’d drink to all good fellows who come from far and near. I'm a ramblin’, gamblin’, hell of an engineer.
