Member News

Dear Members,

It seems we will be having a REAL winter this year. I do not think I can remember a year with 2 weeks of below freezing daytime high temperatures. Growing up in the Piedmont of Virginia, I always thought of Maryland as a northern state. I, for one, hope Punxsutawney Phil does NOT see his shadow on 2/2. Fortunately for us we have a warm and inviting clubhouse, an attentive service team, televisions for sports in our bar where mixology is a passionate sport of its own, and ample space for Mahjong, gin rummy, backgammon, or a meal by a fireplace with family or friends. We have recently moved our ping pong and foosball tables into the patio enclosure to entertain the kids while their parents linger over a nightcap and connect with fellow members. Let Green Spring be your in town, winter escape!

Do not forget to mark your calendars for the Souper Bowl Soup Sale on Saturday, February 7 and be on the lookout for notices advising that the ICE RINK is open for skating. Please join us for Brunch on Super Bowl Sunday and note that the bar will be open until 5:00 p.m. at which time the Club will close for the day.

The team and I want you to know that our jobs are more fun when you are HERE!

Meet Duncan Miller - Director of Racquets

Q: How Long have you been a part of the GSVHC Team , and what brought you to our racquets program?

D: I started working at GSVHC on October 1st 2018 I was a HeadAssistant Racquets Professional at Navesink Country Club in New Jersey and was looking for a Directors position and thought this would be a great opportunity for me in the next phase of my career!

Q:What do you enjoy most about teaching or coaching racquet sports at GSVHC?

D: I find it very rewarding to provide members and their guests an outlet to exercise, socialize and improve their racquets skills. It is very nice to help introduce adults to racquets sports and see it become a big part of their lives socially. I also really enjoy helping the juniors learn a lifetime sport/s and helping them improve to reach their goals on the courts

Q:What does a great day on the courts look like for you at GSVHC?

D:This is cheesy, but everyday is a great day on the courts at GSVHC! I would like to think that my favorite lesson/clinic is the next one.An ideal day would probably be an early morning hitting lesson with one of the stronger players at the club. It is great to get out, exercise and remember why I love racquets sports and what got me into this profession. That, followed by a great group of Juniors for a summer camp. Getting out with the kids and sharing the joy of the game and seeing them love it is one of my favorite on court experiences. In the afternoon having a Ladies Team Practice where I can be around a large group to help them improve their games while focusing on partnerships and how to best compete in the next weeks matches. Last thing of the day would be to have a group of Men for a drill and play where guys can unwind and run around after a day of being in the office

Q:What is an achievement or professional milestone you ’ re particularly proud of ?

D: I am very lucky and have many things to be proud of. I am extremely excited about the momentum with racquets at GSVHC and the recent addition of Padel at GSVHC. I am also proud of the culture we have built as a staff at GSVHC and am happy with the retention of seasonal staff over my tenure at the club. Pros enjoy working here and it is not always easy to have repeat staff with a seasonal position but I think that speaks volumes to how the membership here treats their staff and how the work environment within the racquets department is.

Q:What advice would you give members looking to improve their game or try a new racquet sport?

Duncan and his wife, Katie enjoying their honeymoon in Australia and Bali!

D:Whether it is tennis, pickleball, platform tennis, or padel, the best way to improve those sports is to play. While it is not feasible for everyone, I think if you can get out to play three times a week I believe that is the sweet spot to notice an improvement over the course of a particular season. As far as trying a new racquet sport, I hear a lot "I do not want to try another racquet sport because I am afraid it will ruin my tennis game " In my experience most players who say this have been playing tennis for several years My advice is that you will not forget how to play tennis just by playing another racquets sport Often times those other racquet sports can help compliment your tennis games. Get out and try a new game and you might be surprised how much you like it

Visiting Artist

Exhibition beginning January 19 , 2026 th Meet The Artist Date: Wednesday, April 22nd

John Branden Sills

John Brandon Sills is a Baltimore artist. A Fine Arts graduate of Towson State University, he has been painting for over 20 years. Combining a semester abroad studying art in Florence, Italy and another five years of fine art studies at the Schuler School of Fine Arts, he has had the finest in classical art training.

John Sills still lifes are stylistically inspired by the Old Masters. His primary goal is to capture the qualities of light and atmosphere. The method used to achieve those light qualities is careful observation of the details and attention to the discipline of meticulously applying his paint in thin layers, a glazing technique. Also a landscape painter, John's favorite places to paint are the "intimate places in nature, corners of pastures, bends in streams; places that invite the viewer to a close personal relationship with nature. When I'm painting, I am trying to portray on canvas the emotional sensations I feel about this wonderful land. I cannot separate my personal philosophy and love of nature from a strong spiritual awareness and desire to care for and preserve this land."

John Sills is currently teaching drawing and landscape painting as well as participating in numerous art exhibitions each year. He has won numerous awards including the Artist Magazine still life competition and 1st place in oil painting at the Chesapeake Bay Foundation show, to name a few. His work has toured nationally in the "Baltimore Realist Show."

Brendan’s Trip to Asia

Many of you may know that I recently spent 16 days traveling throughout Asia, it was truly a wonderful experience. We traveled to Japan, Vietnam and Cambodia.

We spent time in Tokyo, Kyoto, Hanoi, Hoi An, Da Nang, Saigon and Siem Reap, with daily excursions outside of the major metropolitan areas. All three countries were wonderful, with extremely different cultures.

Japan was orderly with the most amazing public transportation system I’ve ever experienced! Vietnam was much more chaotic, but in a fun “anything goes ” type of way. Cambodia was somewhere in between, with Angkor Wat being a major highlight of the entire trip!

The food in all three countries was fantastic, highlighted by one of the best banh mi I’ve ever had in Hoi An!

I’m so thankful and blessed for this amazing opportunity!
