ATale of Two Clubs - a Brief History
This year marks a special milestone in Maryland golf: the 75thAnnual Elkridge–Green Spring Invitational. For three-quarters of a century, this event has brought together two clubs whose histories are deeply intertwined through sport, fellowship, and a shared appreciation for tradition. Long before golf became central to club life, both Elkridge and Green SpringValley were rooted in Maryland’s fox hunting culture.The Elkridge Club traces its beginnings to 1878, when it was founded as the Elkridge Fox Hunting Club by a group of sportsmen seeking to organize and preserve the sport of fox hunting. Fourteen years later, in 1892, Green SpringValley Hunt Club was organized with a similar purpose: to promote fox hunting in the rolling countryside of the Green SpringValley. One of the most notable early connections between the two clubs came in 1894, with the founding of the Maryland Hunt Cup.That year, members of the Elkridge Fox Hunting Club challenged members of Green SpringValley Hunt Club to a timber race over natural hunting country.The race was intended to be ridden by amateurs, without commercial activity, and in keeping with the spirit of the hunt field. What began as a spirited challenge between two neighboring fox hunting clubs quickly became one of Maryland’s most celebrated sporting traditions.Today, the Maryland Hunt Cup remains one of the great timber races inAmerica and a lasting symbol of the shared sporting heritage between Elkridge and Green SpringValley.
Though each club developed its own distinct identity, their early foundations reflected many of the same values: horsemanship, sportsmanship, outdoor recreation, and a strong sense of community.As the decades passed, both clubs evolved with the times. Golf, racquets, dining, social events, and family traditions became an increasingly important part of club life, but the original spirit of camaraderie and friendly competition remained firmly in place.
The Elkridge–Green Spring Invitational is a reflection of that shared heritage. More than a golf tournament, it is a celebration of the enduring relationship between two historic clubs that have helped shape the landscape of Baltimore-area private club life.The event honors not only excellent play on the course, but also the friendships, traditions, and mutual respect that have carried this Invitational through 75 years.
