Dear Friends of GSL, I am delighted to present to you another rich and informative Anchor magazine! Just as there is a lot going on in the life of our school, there is a lot to read in this expanded publication. We have an exciting Strategic Plan that gives us distinct areas of focus for the future while providing us with flexibility to respond to today’s rapidly changing marketplace. You’ll learn a bit about the faculty’s professional development that draws on design thinking work and applies it to the educational setting. You’ll also see great information about financial aid and the recent facility enhancements we completed this summer, as well as news and notes about our fabulous alumni and the amazing things they have done with their education from Grace-St. Luke’s. I love walking across campus because all of the above comes to life in the classrooms and the transformative interactions between our teachers and our students. Just this past week, I was delighted to see our Little Lukers in the new backyard space, learning about their bodies by painting with their feet—what a glorious riot of color! I saw 3rd graders working with 6th graders on Spanish dialogues, strengthening the vocabularies of both age groups. And finally, I saw a 7th grade math class coming up with real life solutions to various challenges and presenting them to their peers—all the while applying sophisticated math concepts to the task at hand. A GSL education is an active education; our students are involved in the process of learning, and that makes all the difference. These are just a few of the new activities and lessons that have been created because of our investment in professional development for all faculty. Speaking of making a difference, you will also see information about last year’s Annual Fund and the record-breaking year we had in 2017-2018. Thank you to everyone who participated in supporting Grace-St. Luke’s! Your support is so important to GSL. We are blessed to have 100 percent Board and Faculty participation year after year, and last year was no exception. In fact, 20 percent of our faculty and staff gave at the leadership level—a truly remarkable indication of the devotion and commitment of our teachers. We have amazing Annual Fund Chairs again this year with Chirag and Mandy Chauhan leading the way. But it will also take each one of you contributing in whatever way you can to help GSL continue to thrive. We’ve set ambitious goals this year, and your financial support of GSL goes directly to things like professional development, facility enhancements, and financial aid. Enjoy The Anchor magazine. Dear Friends, Take a minute and think about the GSL community and all the pieces that go into making it so special. Board members, parents, grandparents, and students come and go. While all are so important to GSL, the constants that sit at the very heart of our community—our lifeblood, if you will—are the faculty. Each year since preschool, my son Henry has had a great teacher in his life— some years more than one. Isn’t this one of the greatest treasures about GSL? Our faculty are accomplished, creative, and challenging, but above all, they care. This year, the Board of Trustees is committed to showing faculty members just how much we appreciate their dedication to the fabric of GSL. The Board is treating all faculty, staff, and significant others to a night out with live music, food, and drinks to celebrate our great team. The faculty at Grace-St. Luke’s deserves this recognition and so much more. After all, they do more than teach. They are club leaders, coaches, fans, advisors, event planners, role models, counselors, and loyal friends. They empower our students and ignite their passions to help them achieve their goals. They encourage students to question things to ensure that they become creative problem solvers. They listen, they empathize, and they truly care. To our faculty at Grace-St. Luke’s, thank you for your patience, kindness, and guidance. Thank you for showing our students that even as teachers, you have a commitment to being lifelong learners. STRATEGIC PLAN DEFINES
GSL’S COMMITMENT TO BALANCE INNOVATION AND TRADITION In today’s world, new technologies continue to shift the way industries function. At the core of GSL’s new strategic plan is our vision to recognize, embrace, and implement best practices to prepare our students for success in high school, college, and into their careers. To maintain our status as a leading school in the Mid-South, we must continue to approach our mission and vision by balancing traditional academic approaches with innovative and visionary thinking. In everything we do–from exploring new ideas while maintaining proven strategies to investigating global thinking while remaining anchored by our success skills–GSL will maintain a balance of the old and new. Here is a summary of the five goals outlined in the strategic plan. The full plan can be viewed online at https://www.gslschool.org/about-gsl/strategic-plan/. SUMMARY OF GOALS 1. ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Provide a vigorous academic experience that fosters individual achievement and personal success. 2. DIVERSITY Develop, embrace and promote a broad definition of diversity that is reflected in the composition of our student body, faculty, and Board of Trustees, as well as in our curriculum and enrichment offerings. 3. FACILITIES Maintain and improve every aspect of our vibrant physical spaces to enhance the quality of teaching and learning, to attract, hire, and retain top quality students, faculty and staff, and to create a campus that promotes safety, provides a welcoming atmosphere, and nurtures academic, artistic and athletic excellence. 4. INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT Develop and implement an advancement strategy that supports sustainable enrollment and retention, promotes GSL’s story, and fosters long-term relationships with families, donors and volunteers. 5. FINANCIAL SUSTAINABILITY Ensure long-term financial viability by operating on a sound basis and developing financial resources to support GSL’s goals.
INDEPENDENT SCHOOL ACCREDITATION At Grace-St. Luke’s, we take pride in providing an outstanding academic experience. To ensure we are delivering the best possible product, we make sure that we, as an institution, are held to high standards. That is why we are proud to be accredited by the Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS), a highly regarded accrediting agency for independent schools.
WHAT IS ACCREDITATION? Accreditation, as outlined by SAIS, “...is a voluntary process of self-evaluation and continuous improvement that reflects compliance with required standards/indicators; involves a self-study; and includes a peer review by educators from outside of your school.”1 To achieve SAIS accreditation, an independent school must • complete a self-study, which includes examining every aspect of the school, assessing compliance with standards, identifying strengths and weaknesses, setting priorities, and determining plans for improvement,2 • meet all standards outlined by SAIS, • respond to recommendations made by the visiting committee (comprised of faculty and administrators from other independent schools trained to oversee the accreditation process), • take steps toward improvement, and • work continuously to affirm its mission. Once a school is found to be in compliance with the established standards, it will earn its accreditation status for a five-year period.

DESIGN THINKING
GSL FOCUSES ON CREATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING AND INNOVATION As the new school year approached, the academic leadership team was charged with making the Strategic Plan’s Academic Excellence goal a top priority. After some discussion, they agreed that GraceSt. Luke’s was ready to elevate its academic program by embracing design thinking. After talking with DesignEd Founder and CEO Lauren Sikes, the team knew they found the right person to help make this happen. DesignEd, dedicated to helping schools design innovative culture and curriculum to create learning environments where teachers love to teach and students love to learn, began its work with GSL in August. “Grace-St. Luke’s is in a perfect position to implement design thinking,” Sikes said. “The faculty are excited about growing professionally. This, paired with their strong sense of pride to be a part of GSL, is the right combination for design thinking to work.” Design thinking, made popular by Stanford’s d.school and the consulting firm IDEO, is simply a process for creative problem solving. GSL’s mission to prepare boys and girls to become creative problem solvers makes design thinking a perfect fit. Throughout the year, DesignEd will continuously train faculty in design thinking, focusing on the framework and how to design instructional prototypes. DesignEd will also provide ongoing support and collaboration to teachers to help shift culture and curriculum towards authentic learning experiences. Teachers will see how the prototypes work, analyze the outcomes, and continue to make adjustments from there. “My goal is to help GSL’s teachers enhance the great work they already do,” said Sikes. “Design thinking encourages teachers to think outside the box to engage students in meaningful, relevant ways that connect school to the real world. As the year goes on, there are going to be so many wonderful outcomes, all because the dedicated faculty are embracing this creative problem solving approach to instruction.”
WHY IS ACCREDITATION IMPORTANT? When accredited by an established, accrediting agency such as SAIS, a school demonstrates that it is committed to its own programs, standards, and financial stability. Accreditation is important because it • engages the entire school community to affirm its mission, identify areas of strength and weakness, and articulate plans for improvement, • helps determine if an institution meets or exceeds minimum standards of quality,2 • creates goals for institutional self-improvement, and • provides a self-regulatory alternative for state oversight functions. Families with students in grades SK-8 can apply for financial aid (Preschool tuition can often be claimed as a tax deduction). GSL offers financial aid to eligible students who would not otherwise have access to a GSL education due to financial constraints. GSL uses FAST, a third-party vendor, to evaluate and recommend aid amounts. GSL awarded $1 million in need-based awards to 100 students for the 2018-19 school year! Every financial aid recipient pays something to GSL. $665,000 in tuition is being paid this school year by the 2018-19 financial aid recipients.
GRANDPARENTS’ DAY TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 20
All grandparents and grand friends are invited to join us for the 2018 Grandparents’ Day on November 20. It’s the perfect way to launch your Thanksgiving holiday. The halfday event includes a mid-morning coffee and light refreshments, campus-wide classroom visits, and special chapel services. Official invitations will be mailed in late October.

DIVISIONS ENJOY
FACILITY ENHANCEMENTS Over the summer, each division had a special facility-related project to enhance the learning experiences. These updates have already had a huge impact on faculty and students alike!
PRESCHOOL: VARIOUS ENHANCEMENTS MADE TO OUTDOOR CLASSROOM Located in the area behind the Preschool, the Outdoor Classroom has been revamped with cedar flooring, gardening spaces and areas for different types of play to provide outdoor classroom experiences. This year, each class will be spending two hours per week in the Outdoor Classroom space exploring their environment, completing science experiments, creating artwork, performing on the outdoor stage and tending to the garden.
PRESCHOOL OUTDOOR CLASSROOM WINS 2ND PLACE On May 10, 2018, a panel of judges from Landers Ford, Memphis City Beautiful and News Channel 3 awarded GSL’s Preschool with second place in the Outdoor Classroom category of the Beautify Your School contest. The entry poster showed pictures of the improvements made to the backyard over the last two years. A total of 79 entries from 29 schools participated in the contest this year. The cash prize awarded to GSL allowed more plants and pots, along with a variety of garden tools and plexi-glass easels, to be purchased for the outdoor space. In addition, due to two successful Garden Days, the Outdoor Classroom is now a certified Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation, which means the space provides wildlife with food, water, cover and places to raise their young.

LOWER SCHOOL: NEW FLOORING IN SK CLASSROOMS New flooring was installed in the SK classrooms, providing a new and inviting look. The combination of laminate flooring and carpet makes the rooms cleaner, calmer, fresher and more spacious. The new flooring project inspired the SK teachers to spend time planning and reconfiguring their space since the flooring project encouraged a fresh start. The new flooring adds a more positive ambiance and is very child-oriented. There is also a more consistent and uniform look across all three SK classrooms.
MIDDLE SCHOOL: TWO NEW CLASSROOMS CONSTRUCTED In Middle School, two new classrooms were constructed using space previously reserved for use by the GSL Church Scout troops. A wall divider breaks this space down into two classrooms occupied by Mrs. Letsou and Mr. Umiker, but can also be used as one large meeting area as needed. Because each teacher now has his/her own teaching space, there are no big line-ups outside certain classrooms waiting for one class to finish before the other enters. The new classrooms have cut down on congestion, creating a much calmer vibe in the hallways. This flexible space was also invaluable for Back-to-School Night in August. Middle School was able to open the wall, allowing all 5th grade families to meet in one location. This space will continue to get many uses of this sort since there are few large meeting spaces on campus.

MANDY & CHIRAG CHAUHAN TAKE THE LEAD! The Chauhan family has been actively involved in GSL life for many years. Parents of Cole (3rd grade) and Blake (1st grade), Mandy and Chirag are always eager volunteers with big contagious smiles, great senses of humor, and plenty of elbow grease. Organizing teacher appreciation events? Done that. Co-chairing the Anchor Auction? No problem. Room parent? Of course. Finding event sponsorships? Check. Member of Parents’ Association Board? Yep. The Chauhans love GSL, and they prove it every day. Originally from Princeton, Kentucky, Mandy played golf for Tennessee Tech while earning a degree in business. She traveled to Memphis for a PGA Tour summer golf position at TPC Southwind, and that summer stint led to Mandy’s becoming a full-time Memphian. After several years with Commercial Bank and Trust, Mandy joined the accounting department at Aquaserv in 2014. Long active in the GSL Parents’ Association, Mandy cochaired last year’s highly-successful Anchor Auction held at the Pink Palace Museum. Chirag is a lifelong Memphian. He attended Houston High School in Germantown and graduated from Rhodes College before receiving his MBA from the University of Memphis. Chirag is Partner and Director of Financial Services at the Barnett Group and Barnett Financial Group where Mandy & Chirag Chauhan pictured with he supports employers and individuals in the areas of employee benefits Blake (1st grade) & Cole (3rd grade) and wealth management. He earned his Retirement Planning Specialist designation from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. Community-wide, Chirag serves on the board of the Orpheum Theatre Group, Mid-South Boys and Girls Club, and the Methodist Germantown Advisory Council. As a family, the Chauhans enjoy watching the Grizzlies, going to the lake, playing golf, tennis and basketball (Mandy used to coach churchleague basketball) – AND volunteering at GSL. We are excited and grateful for their leadership role in this year’s Annual Fund.
THE ANNUAL FUND: WHY GIVE?

Because... • GSL is a not-for-profit business. By design, high-quality schools are labor-intensive and people-oriented. Where a for-profit company might consolidate employee duties and resources to save money, combining classrooms and reducing staff would not benefit our students. • The majority of your donations help us to recruit and retain highlyqualified instructors, pay for advanced education and training, and purchase classroom technologies. • Your donations help pay for annual campus improvements like the enhanced Outdoor Classroom at Miss Lee’s, the new flooring in SK and the two new classrooms in Middle School. • The Annual Fund helps minimize tuition increases by off-setting additional costs per student – roughly $2,500 each. • The Annual Fund directly benefits families in need of financial assistance. This enables more people to enjoy the benefits of the GSL experience. • Every dollar counts. Even a small donation makes a big difference.

GOING STRONG To keep GSL going strong now and in the future requires a conservative and responsible approach to the management of its annual budget and a keen and diligent eye on its long-term investment stability. To this end, the school has established six specially-targeted endowment funds: • The Anchor Fund – GSL’s general Endowment benefits from a variety of investment opportunities. • The Dennis Cain Facilities Fund – For the maintenance of school buildings and grounds. • The Scholarship Fund – Providing need-based financial assistance to families of current or prospective students. • The Library Fund – Promoting and supporting the GSL School Library. • The Technology Fund – Providing state-of-the-art technology to students and staff. • The Arts Fund – Promoting and supporting a variety of arts activities schoolwide. ALUMNI ASSOCIATION CELEBRATED
“THE BIG ONE” IN MAY GSL alumni, under the leadership of the GSL Alumni Association Board chaired by Ann Burruss Prascher ‘98, enjoyed a memorable year focused primarily on its first all-class reunion in four years. (There have been four All-Saints Reunions since the Alumni Association was established 15 years ago.) The 2018 All-Saints Reunion (a.k.a. The Big One) was held in the Anchor Center on May 11 and included tours of the campus and the presentation of the Outstanding Alumni Award. The 2018 recipient was Mitch Graves ‘79 (see page 19 for story). The event attracted an estimated 350 alumni aged 21 and older. Considering that Grace-St. Luke’s had a high school for a very few, short years, it’s impressive that the majority of former students attended GSL mostly as adolescents and pre-teens. Few, if any, elementary schools can claim that kind of loyalty!

Ashley Lowe was named President of the Black Student Union at Middle Tennessee State University for the 20182019 school year.

Molly Cline & Eli Weinberg were recognized for their outstanding work as paid interns at AutoZone this summer. Molly won the award for Best Presentation Skills and Eli won the award for Boldest Idea. Molly is a junior at Tulane University, and Eli is a junior at the University of Illinois.

Caroline Ciaramitaro was selected as a Morehead-Cain Scholar at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Caroline will receive a four-year summer enrichment program made up of diverse, customized experiences including outdoor leadership, public service, inquiry and exploration, and private enterprise. The total annual value of the Morehead-Cain is $54,108 for a total of $216,432 over the course of four years. This is the second year in a row for a GSL alum to earn this significant scholarship. Vivi Gray premiered her film at the third Indie Memphis Youth Film Fest at the Halloran Centre on September 8, 2018. Sara Fraser ‘15, Claire Pellegrin ‘15, and Lily Smith ‘15 were recently inducted into the National Honor Society at St. Mary’s. Mackenzie Barnes ‘14, the chapter president, made the announcements at the induction.
Similarly, Edward Henley ‘14, Eddie Feild ‘15, Grant Young ‘15, and Sonny Charbonnet ‘15 were recently inducted into the National Honor Society chapter at MUS.

Eddie Feild, a senior at MUS, and Claire Kvande, a senior at Lausanne, were named semifinalists in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program. Sara Fraser has chosen Memphis Tilth as the organization to complete her St. Mary’s senior independent study. Sara is very passionate about eating locally and sustainably and hopes to gain a better understanding of the impact of supporting the local food system and the importance of food security, accessibility, and affordability. For her independent study, she will focus on the Fresh Savings program and how it directly impacts the lives of those who are food insecure in Memphis.

Congratulations to several GSL alumni who were featured at the 3rd Annual Indie Memphis Youth Film Fest held this fall at the Halloran Centre at the Orpheum Memphis. Charles Heiter ‘15 and Owen Howell ‘15 had their film, Between Oneself, shown as part of the CrewUP Mentorship Screening. During the Memphis Youth Competition Screening, Caroline Couch ‘16 had her films A Final Waltz and Red Thread featured. Stella McCain ‘15 also presented her films Pop and Study Buddies.

Reese McMullen completed his freshman year at CBHS with a 5.1 GPA. He was a 2nd Team All-Region selection in basketball and started for the Brothers as a freshman. This past summer, he attended Duke University’s Talent Identification Program (TIP) and was one of two participants chosen (out of 400) to have lunch with University President Vincent Price.

MITCH GRAVES NAMED
GSL’S 2018 OUTSTANDING ALUM Every four years, GSL hosts an All-Saints Reunion on campus, inviting all GSL alumni 21 years old and older. More than 300 people attend, which is quite impressive – especially for a school that only goes through the 8th grade. While a local DJ provided popular tunes of current and past decades, the hundreds of attendees enjoyed a nostalgic tour of the campus, visited new additions and improvements, and reminisced with their former classmates and faculty. One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of the Outstanding Alumni Award. Nominations were accepted from all over the country and were reviewed based on the nominee’s contributions to the community, achievements or recognition in his or her field, involvement in professional or charitable organizations, and the position of the nominee to serve as a role model for future generations of Grace-St. Luke’s students. The year’s Outstanding Alum, John Mitchell “Mitch” Graves, is a member of the Class of 1979. While at GSL, he enjoyed a range of interests but was especially fond of sports, playing on the school’s basketball, GSL Alumni Association President Ann Burruss soccer and tennis teams. Graduating from Prascher ‘98 presents the 2018 Outstanding Alumni Award to Mitch Graves ‘79. Christian Brothers High School, he attended CBU where he earned a B.S. in business administration with a concentration in finance and economics. Mitch is president and CEO of HealthChoice, LLC. Prior to joining HealthChoice, Mitch served as president and CEO of Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare’s Affiliated Service Division. Recognized throughout the mid-south community, Mitch was awarded CBU’s Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2012. Since 2013, he has served as chairman of CBU’s Board of Trustees. Graves also sits on the boards of Alliance Health Services, Precision Infusion-Memphis, and The University Club. He is a member of the Economic Club of Memphis and also serves on the finance committee of Grace-St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. It was announced in June 2018 that he was one of 45 professionals statewide selected to join the Leadership Tennessee Class of 2018-2019. Perhaps most importantly – and meaningfully – Mitch is a member of the GSL Alumni Board for which he has shown a loyalty and commitment that is unsurpassed. He never misses a meeting or an alumni event, often bringing his lovely wife Kelly Jo with him. We are honored and proud to have an alum who represents and promotes GSL as well as Mitch does. THE GSL ANNUAL FUND
2017-2018 ANNUAL REPORT GSL’s 70th Anniversary Marked by Generosity Back in 1947, Grace-St. Luke’s Episcopal School was started more on a wing and a prayer than on a budget. Mrs. S. Griffin Walker had just started the kindergarten, which operated out of the church’s parish house. She prepared the children’s lunches herself and brought them to school daily from her home. Seventy years later, GSL thrives on a tight but efficient multi-million dollar budget with additional donations to the annual fund, proving that the school’s families are both grateful and generous. GSL’s 70th anniversary year was one of several celebratory events, including the 4th All-Saints Reunion, which attracted more than 300 alumni (see page 16-17 for photos)! In addition to reconnecting long-time friends and associations, the combination anniversary-reunion seemed to inspire more alumni gifts to the Annual Fund than ever before. In fact, under the “medical team” of Drs. Ruth & Kurt Patton, chairs of the 2017-2018 Annual Fund, the Annual Fund continued its healthy economic growth, setting a new record (again) in GSL donations. Parents of Bauer (8th grade) and Glover (5th grade), Ruth and Kurt have been longtime, loyal supporters of GSL, and their vision and enthusiasm inspire their fellow parents as well as grandparents, alumni, church members and other supporters of Grace-St. Luke’s Episcopal School. 2017-18 Annual Fund Chairs Ruth & Kurt Patton with sons Bauer (8th grade) & Glover (5th grade)

SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT FUND Alumni Parent Challenge – Goal: $200,000 During the 2017-18 school year, alumni parents Allison and Andy Cates made a tremendous commitment to GSL. They wanted to make financial assistance available to more families while also ensuring that financial aid would be available for decades to come. Consequently, they pledged $100,000 to the Scholarship Endowment Fund and issued a five-year challenge to other alumni parents to match their donation. Another alumni family (and current grandparents), Joanie and Andy Taylor, had already demonstrated their support of financial assistance for GSL students and enthusiastically supported the Cates’s initiative. An official matching gift challenge of $200,000 was introduced to alumni parents. The GSL Scholarship Endowment Fund challenge is barely one year into its five-year campaign, and donations are continuing to come in. RECORD-BREAKING YEAR The Parents’ Association, of which all parents and guardians at Grace-St. Luke’s are automatically members, is directed by a small, dedicated, high-energy group of volunteers who spend almost as much time on campus as they do at work or home. From fun-to-funds, the P.A. oversees 16 major events each school year. The 2017-18 P.A. President Jeni Linkous (mother of Lilly ‘18 and Maggie ‘21) kept her team inspired and on-task as they raised a grand total of $97,610 for teacher wish list items – and more. This record-breaking sum was used for the following: • • • • •
$57,000: Teacher wish list items $17,500: The redesign and furnishing of two new Middle School classrooms $4,710: The school’s Anchor Fund Endowment $4,000: The purchase and installation of three new microwaves in the cafeteria $14,000: Lemaster Playground capital improvement fund
