Thisyearhasseenmorerestaurantclosures thanopenings.Clearly,thisisasignofthe times.MostnotablyaroundPalmeiraSquare, with TheArtisan,whichwasonlyopened whenIreviewedlastyearisalreadyclosedand nowanItalian,allwithin12months. Harry’s, nearbyistobecome No.41,the Meadow is nowanother Bank steakandribsoutlet(64 WesternRoad,Hove),akintotheOldBankin Kemptown.Meanwhilelifegoesonwith breakfastsat TheHub (118ChurchRoad); steaksinthe RockNRoller (95WesternRoad,Brighton);the occasionalFrenchdelightat L’Eglise (196ChurchRoad,Hove);Sunday lunchesoscillatebetweenmylocal TheCrescent (6CliftonHill, Brighton),The ABar (11-12 MarineParade,Brighton),with thereturnofAlex,andmy countryescape,arevamped WickwoodsCountryClub (Shaves WoodLane,Albourne)wherethe Sundaycarveryiskeenlypriced andatableinthelandscaped garden,apositivedelight.

Revampedkidontheblock, TheDiner (11-13MontefioreRoad,Hove) providesabright,cheerysetting,smileyserviceand £15 fortwofull Englishwithtoastandnicemugofcoffee.
The RockNRoller,oppositeWaitrose,isoneofmystalwartstograba bite,withcheeryserviceandsteaksofconsistentquality.Abottleof Merlot,steakorribswithfries,andasimpleraspberrysorbet completelyhitsthespot.

Onarecentfamilyoutingtothe ABar with Alexondoorpatrol,wewereparkedwitha windowseatforfive.TheSundayroastmenu offerslarge,mediumandsmallportions. Starters,thenaheartyroastandfearfully stodgypuddingsdidusallin,accompaniedby bottlesofHousewinecominginatundera tenner,again£20aheadmorethancovered thebill.Servicewasparticularlyattentiveandmuchenjoyed.


TheSundayalternativeisthe WickwoodsCountryClub carvery.With animpressiverevampthey’vefound theirmarket,asthecarparksare rammedandthoughthere’splentyof roomindoorsandouttheotherweek theearliesttableIcouldbookwas3pm (lastorders4pm).Thereareusually threeroasts(beef/pork/turkey)andboiledspuds,peas,carrots, broccoliandawickedcauli’cheese.Startersandpuddingsalso available.Mytwocourseswithalargewinespritzerandcoffeecomes inasmidgeonover£20,wellworththetrip.

Irecentlyescapedtothecountryfor afamilycelebrationat Gravetye Manor,(VowelsLane,WestHoathly, WestSussex).Thestatelystone buildingwithbeautifulgardens surroundedbywoodlandispure escapism,sodrinksinthegarden, weatherpermitting,areamust!We hadaroomtoourselvestocontainthebanterandhighspirits,with decoratedtableandpersonalisedmenu.Thefourcourses,augmented byacheeseplatterandbirthdaycakewerequitesuperb.Thewinelist wasviewedonlinepriortoarrivalandisvast,sotimetochooseat homewaswellworthwhile.Isecuredahomemadepotofjamforeach householdasamomentoandleftbytaxiinadaze,possiblyatthesize ofthebillforwhichrealsavingisamust!

Onasunnyday,theviewfromthepier presentsBrightoninallitsglory:itslarger thanlifeappeal,itshistoricsignificanceand itscosmopolitaninclusiveness.
Theshorelineishumanlypopulatedwiththe teemingmasses,colourfulanddiverse, orthodoxandeccentric,joyousand energetic.Theskylineispunctuatednotonly byarchitecturalmonumentstoplay,pleasure andprofit,butalsobythespires,towersand imposingedificesofsomeofthenation’s mostcherishedchurches.

Unfortunatelythisisnothowitseemsto mostpeoplenow,andparticularlytothe largeLGBTcommunityofBrighton.ForLGBT peopletheAnglicanChurchappearsatbest acquiescent,andatworstcomplicitinan increasinglyreactionary,persecutoryand ostracisingoffensiveagainsthard-won humanandequalrightsachievedinrecent decades.Afteritslaudableroleinthepostwarcampaignforthedecriminalisationof homosexualityinthe1960s,theAnglican Churchhierarchyhassystematicallyopposed everyadvanceintheliberation,equalisation andaffirmationofLGBTpeopleeversince. FormanyithasliterallybecomeEnemy NumberOne.
Andyet,actually,therealityinthepewsof theAnglicanchurchesinBrightonisvery different.Despitethebesteffortsofnational churchleaders,throughintemperateand visceraloutbursts,tocompromisethepatient engagementanddedicatedministryoflocal clergyandparisheswiththeLGBT community,thereisampleevidencethat localAnglicanChristiancommunitiesareat easewiththehumandiversityoftheir contextandfeelcompelledbyconvictionto welcomeandaffirmallGod’schildren, regardlessofalldistinctionsandselfexpression.
Amongstmanyexamplesofevidenceto substantiatethisclaimthereistherecent ChangingAttitudeSussexsurveyofAnglican
churcheswhichfoundanoverwhelming commitmenttofullinclusion(thiscanbe seenat www.changingattitudesussex.com).
Faithisnoteveryone’sstickofrock,but therearemanywithintheLGBTcommunity whowouldwanttobeconfidentthatthey canparticipatefullyintheChurchandthat theircontributiontoChristianlifeisas valuedandnecessaryaseveryoneelses. Equally,theAnglicanchurchesinBrighton wouldwanttodissociatethemselvesfrom thelanguage,behaviourandpracticesof thoseclaimingtospeakas‘Christians’but whoseektoexcludeparticularcategoriesof peopleandwhofailtounderstandthe distinctiveneedsandexperiencesofLGBT people.

Thereiscurrentlyaproposalbeingdiscussed bytheBrightonAnglicanchurchesto establishaspecificpostentirelydedicated toworkingwiththeLGBTcommunityinour city.Thiswouldbeanordainedpriestwho wouldbeavailablefull-timeforthe communityandalsoforthechurches,in ordertohelpthemunderstandLGBTpeople betterandsobeinapositionbetterto provideforrealneeds.
Someofyoumayrememberthe groundbreakingworkdonebythemuch lovedlateFatherMarcusRiggsinthe1980s inperformingexactlythiskindof‘bridging’ rolebetweenthechurchesandtheHIV/AIDS community.Ifitcanbesecuredthispost wouldoperateinasimilarway.
AsDrJeffreyJohnarguedatarecent ChangingAttitudemeeting,therealGospel messageisatitscoreoneofloveandradical inclusivity.AllofJesus’friendswerepeople regardedbyJewishsocietyassocially unacceptable,outcastanddespised.Some churchleadersseemtoforgetthis,andthey havedifficultyrememberingthatJesus’ harshestwordswerereservedforthepiously self-righteous, ‘woetoyouscribesand pharisees’. Webelievethatthedirectionof travelofourcity’slocalAnglicanchurchesis towardsexactlythekindofradicalinclusivity Jesuslivedout.

Sussexhassomeoftheloveliestwalksinthe countryandisdeadeasytogettowiththe addedadvantageofmanydecentpubsalong theway.BoxingDayis,orwas,oneofthe mosttraditionaldaystotakeawalk.Wehave twoorthreefavourites: SeafordHead tothe GoldenGalleon inthe CuckmereValley, High andOver ontheroadfrom Seaford to Alfriston,withprobablyoneofthemost beautifulviewsinSussex.Bestofall,inour opinion,is FirleBeacon,whichat217mis oneofthehighestpointsinthecounty.It’s partofthe SouthDownsWay andnow,of course,partofthe SouthDownsNational Park.JustfourorsomilesfromLewesisthe 500-year-oldvillageof Firle,aclassicSussex village.Inthelanguageoftravelbrochures FirleisnestledintheheartoftheSouth

Downs,protectedbytheBeacon,witha varietyofcottages,manycoveredinflint,a communityhallandwide-rangeoflocalevents andfairs.Firleisathrivingruralcommunity inoneofthemostpicturesquepartsofthe UnitedKingdom.Theheartofthislovely villageis,ofcourse,thepub, TheRam.
We’vebeenwalkingthisstretchoftheSouth DownsWayformanyyearsandhavealways endedupatTheRam,whichwasonceareal oldfashionedpubservingsomeofthebest localbeers(Harvey’ssinceyouask)andsome goodpubgrubandnowmustbeoneofthe

mostpopulargastropubsinthearea.It’s packedtothehiltmostweekendswithgood reason,simplewordofmouthhasensuredits success.Undernewmanagementthisplace hasgonefromstrengthtostrength.It’snow essentialtobookatableforlunchat weekends,that’showpopularithasbecome. Thesecretofitssuccessis,forme,thetrue atmosphereofanoldcountrypub.Theyoung andattractivestaffareveryfriendly,andeven iftheyhaven’tseenyouformonthsgreetyou likeanoldfriend.
OnagloriousearlyautumnSundaytheplace waspacked;muddywellies,wetdogsand childrenareeverywhere.Thisbeingrural Sussexmostofthecarsaretopoftherange andthechildrenareextremelywellbehaved. Thefoodisexcellent;theysayit’saslocalas itcanbe,andwithalargeTescoonlyfour
milesawayI’msureitis!Whereverthefood comesfromthechefdoesanexcellentjob.
Isuggestbookingatableinthebarwhichis themostinterestingroom,althoughtheCourt RoomandtheSnugareverypleasant.Ona gooddayyoucaneatanddrinkoutsideinthe gardenortheyard.I’llleavethefullrestaurant reviewtomyexpertcolleaguewhoneedsto visitsoon,thoughsufficetosayweloveThe RamandFirleitselfiswonderful.Wehave oftensaidthatmaybeitwouldbeagreatplace tolive,butit’sjustatadoutofourprice rangeapartfromthefactthatpropertiesnever comeonthemarket,andasit’sallownedby theFirleEstatetheyprobablyneverwill.

ThevillageowesitsexistencetotheGage familywhoarrivedin1463andbuiltthefirst FirlePlace.Sincethenithasbeenthehomeof thefamily,andnowthe8thViscountGagelives there.Thebuildingisanimposing18Chouse whichinpartdatesfromtheTudorperiod.It’s opentothepublicthroughoutthesummerand iswellworthavisit.Firlealsohas,theysay, theoldestcricketgroundintheworld.Trueor notithardlymatters,it’sancient,andthe annualvillagefeteandregularequestrian eventsheldontheestatemakeitavery popularvenue.

MikhailPletnev hasnearly reachedtheend ofhissecond recordedcycleof TCHAIKOVSKY symphonieswiththe Russian NationalOrchestra.Withjustthe Third tocome,hereisthe somewhatlesspopular Symphony No.2,the LittleRussian.It perhapsdoesn'thavetheintensity ordramaofthelatersymphonies, butthereisconsiderableinterest inhisuseandvariationof Ukrainianfolkmelodies,possibly

attheexpenseofoverallstructure.
