Thepricesareverycompetitive, thechoicesoftraditionaldishes arevariedrangingfrommildto veryspicyandthequalityofthe foodgenerallyistopnotchand certainlywellworthchecking out.
TheIronDukeisatraditionallocalbar,nothingpretentious,justoff theseafrontinHove,roundthecornerfromEmbassyCourt.It’sthebar theaudienceforconcertsbyboth'Actually'choirspatroniseandboasts amixedclientelerangingfrombuilderstotheclassicalmusiccrowd.
Forourstarterswetriedthe TomKhaGai sweetandsoursoup (£5.50),cookedwith chicken, galangal and coconutmilk,nottoo spicybutdelicious,followedby KhanomJeep,steamed pork and prawndumpling (£5.50)with waterchestnut and soysauce which weretastyandfatfree.Infact,Ithinktheywerethenicestdumplings thathaveeverpassedmylips!Wefinishedourstarterswith Kung Sarong, kingprawns wrappedin ricepaper,(£5.50)witha sweet chillidip,whichwereveryacceptable.Mostofthestartersonthe menuwerepricedateither £5.20 or £5.50 exceptthe IronDuke Platter (£9.95)whichservestwopeopleandincludes prawnrolls, tempuravegetables, KanomPangNaMoo and Thaifishcakes served with sweetchillisauce

Forthemaincourseweshared twodishes, BetObNamPeug, crispyduck inahomemade organic honey, ginger and tamarindsauce (£9.95),that wasundoubtedlythefinestduck dishI’vebeenservedinabar.It wasstunningandwasservedwith rice and salad.Theseconddishwas PlaNuengManow (£11.95),a wholesteamedwild seabass with chilli, coriander, lemonjuice and salad.Thepresentationofthefish wasaworkofartandtheflavour wasspoton.Onceagainasgooda dishasIhavetastedinany restaurant.Myonlylittleniggle wasthefishwasalittleonthe smallside.

AlldishesatTheIronDukearepreparedwithouttheuseofMSG,which reallymakesadifferencetothetasteandIpersonallyfind,makes sleepinglaterintheeveningmucheasier.Manyofthestandarddishes offeredcomewithvegetarianoptionsandareservedwithboiled rice or noodles.Therearealargerangeof curries, noodle dishesand dishescookedintheWOKat £7.95;toomanytomentionhere,butI willbereturningtosamplethemverysoon.

Fast-forwardto2013andifIwasgoingto writeacolumnnowImightcallit Inventing Lesbianism.Yousee,I’mbackinmysmalltown andbloodysmileyaboutittoo.Iwaslikethe littleladin TheAlchemist byPauloCoelho, goingonthebigjourneyonlytofindthatwhat hereallywantedexistedwherehefirstputon hiswalkingboots.Ihadagreattimein Brightonandlearntalot,butthebosom(Idid boobpunstoo)ofmyfamilywasalwayswhere itwasreallyat,andIdon’tknowhowIwas separatedfrommyrootsforsolong.I’mnow morecomfortableinmyownskinandhave discoveredthatIcanbeagreat,gorgeous homojustaboutanywhere,sonowI’mona small-towntourtopaintthebeigepeopleof thisshitholeawonderfulshadeofpink. Ishouldbehonestandconfessthattherewere otherfactorsinvolvedinthemove.Igotpretty illandlostmyjob.Istartedworkingfrom home,butwasspendingmoretimestaring blanklyataTVscreenortheseaorthebottom ofapintglassthanwashealthy.Ihadtakena six-yearjourneyintoandoutofarelationship
thathadleftmegaspingforairandI’dstopped writing,whichwasahugesignthatthingshad tochange.Iconfess,Iranhomewithmytail betweenmylegs,butwhenIgotthereI discoveredawarmththatIcan’timaginebeing withoutnow.Thisismyhomeagainand Brightonisnowmymistress.Iloveherevery bitasmuchasIdidwhenweweretogether, butnowwehaveanunderstandingandwhen we’retogetherit’sbetterthaniteverwas.In fact,itismyloveofBrightonthatinspiredmy firstnovel, DiazepamforSale.Brightonisn’t merelythesettingofthebook;it’soneofthe maincharactersinastorythatcouldn’tbetold anywhereelseintheworld.
I’moftenaskedhowmuchofthebookis autobiographical,towhichIreply,‘Areyou thick?It’sastoryabouttimetravelasacure fordepressionwithaderangedsat-navlady,a FrankSinatrawho’sstalkedbyseagullsandthe ModsandRockersontheWestPier.Ithen screwupmyfaceandtheyregrethavingever asked.I’mnicelikethat!However,thereare elementsthatcouldn’thavebeenwritten withoutmypersonalexperiencesofbeing crushedbydepression,lonelyandsearchingfor answerswithwhichtoconsolemyself(Ithink mostofuscanrelatetothat).Thebig differenceisthatEmma,Diazepam’smain character,looksforanswersinallthewrong placesandendsuponasurrealanddamaging journey.Allshereallyhadtodowaslookather lifeandmakegooddecisions,butthatwouldn’t makeforaverygoodread.
