From July 15 to August 11, focussed around Brighton Pride month, the local firm will donate 25p from every takeaway cup of coffee to Brighton & Hove Pride’s community fundraising, the first annual charity recipient The scheme will run across the group ’ s three venues located in Brighton’s Ship Street, Kensington Gardens and Cliffe High Street, Lewes The campaign is about more than just raising cash funds too Special Pride Month cups have been printed, which, like Trading Posts’ regular disposable vessels, are formed of a 100% compostable cup and lid. with a Pride flag inspired design to increase awareness and visibility, which the firm has a year-round commitment to.
The team behind Trading Post Coffee Roasters are no strangers to working with the LGBT+ communities. The choice of Brighton & Hove Pride as our first charity partner seemed a natural one, and a great chance to raise a glass (or cup of coffee) to our city’s diversity.”

GOODBYE TIM AND THANK YOU FROM A GRATEFUL COMMUNITY
Tim Procter, welfare rights coordinator, retires after over 30 years of suppor ting the Brighton & Hove HIV+ community By Travis Cox, THT Health Promotion Coordinator.
) In 1986, Tim Procter joined Terrence Higgins Trust (THT) as a volunteer helping people living with HIV and AIDS related conditions Initially facilitating and creating the first social group of its kind, this later became an independent charity called Frontliners THT offered people living with HIV a range of suppor t services such as buddying, counselling and general day to day help Tim did this through what was known as the general services group, offering practical assistance with decorating, driving and shopping, along with suppor ting a number of people living with HIV who just wanted the financial independence to manage their own care In the 1980/90s there was a large amount of discrimination and stigmatisation of people living with HIV and sadly we still see this today Some of Tim’s clients informed him that they were denied access to DHSS (Benefits Office), along with other outside agencies At the time, clients told Tim that they were having security called on them just for living with HIV Tim decided that it was time to act! So he set himself up as an advocacy worker and communicated with the agencies on behalf of his clients Very quickly this service became overwhelmed and the small group of volunteers struggled to cope with the influx of people living with HIV who were accessing the service
THT recognised the need to place this service within its por tfolio and it became known locally as the Advice Centre This meant that paid staff could now suppor t the Brighton & Hove community, by employing a lawyer, housing advisor and a welfare rights worker Tim took up his employment in 1988 and worked for Open Door and then returned to THT His total service to the HIV community was from 1988–2019
Tim’s motivation to become par t of the THT team came from the large amount of personal bereavement Having worked in the Country Cousins cabaret bar in London from 1977, he saw eight of his friends pass away from HIV related conditions over the next decade He also helped suppor t other friends with their end of life care Tim’s own diagnoses came while working for THT, at the time life expectancy was often shor t and Tim felt that this would be a perfect way to spend the possible shor t time he might have left Thankfully Tim went on to suppor t hundreds of people living with HIV to access the benefits they were entitled to and helped pave the way for people living with HIV to be free from discrimination He continued suppor ting people living with HIV for another three decades and has made a huge contribution to the Brighton & Hove LGBT+ communities
We at THT would like to say a massive thank you to Tim for all the dedication he has shown to his clients and the huge commitment to THT as an organisation Everyone at THT would like to thank Tim for everything he has done and continues to do for people living with HIV We would like to wish him all the best for the future and a happy retirement with Molly, his new puppy Once again thank you so much for your dedication to the HIV community and I can confidently say you will be truly missed by the staff and clients of THT Brighton A fond farewell and remember - even though you’re no longer working for THT your dedication and legacy lives on!

HIV STIGMA REMAINS AS RIFE AS EVER IN 2019!
New polling reveals 45% of gay and lesbian Brits would feel ‘uncomfor table’ having sex with someone with HIV and on effective treatment despite zero risk of transmission
)
On the anniversary of Terr y Higgins’ death (July 4), one of the first people to die of an AIDS-related illness, a new survey revealed that attitudes around HIV remain stuck in the 1980s This comes despite huge medical progress in the fight against HIV since Terry’s death in 1982, including that people living with the virus and on effective treatment can’t pass it on – with or without a condom However, the new survey from HIV and sexual health charity Terrence Higgins Trust (THT) shows that under half (47%) of gay and lesbian Brits are still not aware of this stigma-busting fact This compares with 23% of bisexual respondents
While 68% of gay and lesbian Brits were comfor table going on a date with someone living with HIV, 45% still said they’d feel uncomfor table having sex with someone living with HIV who is on effective treatment In the UK, 97% of those diagnosed and on treatment are virally suppressed, which means levels of the virus in the blood are so low that they can’t pass on HIV
Dr Michael Brady, Medical Director at THT and National Advisor for LGBT Health at NHS England, said: “Progress in the treatment for HIV is one of the greatest triumphs of modern medicine In just a couple of decades effective treatment means a HIV diagnosis has gone from a virtual death sentence to us now saying with confidence, and without doubt, that people living with HIV who are on effective treatment can’t pass the virus
on to their sexual partners This has an incredible impact on the lives of people living with HIV and is a powerful message to address HIV- related stigma And while just 19% of Brits know about this progress, we have a duty to keep on shouting about it until everyone knows the truth about HIV "
The YouGov survey also revealed that stigmatising attitudes are the lowest among gay people When asked about feeling comfor table kissing someone living with HIV, 20% of gay and lesbian Brits said they’d feel uncomfor table compared to 48% of the general population There’s no risk of getting HIV through kissing, sharing utensils or other day to day contact
The charity, set up by Terry Higgins’ par tner and close friends, has launched a campaign to tackle out of date beliefs about how HIV is passed on in an effor t to end the stigma and discrimination faced by people living with the virus It takes inspiration from one of THT’s campaigns from the 1990s showing a couple being intimate and the tagline, It’s that condom moment While condoms remain the best way to prevent all sexually transmitted infections, the message has changed to one with the power to transform the lives of those with HIV – people living with HIV and on effective treatment can’t pass it on.
For the past 20 years, evidence has been building to show that the likelihood of passing on HIV is linked to the amount of virus in the blood, also known as viral load Treatment is deemed effective when it reduces this to undetectable levels, which can take up to six months from star ting treatment The landmark PARTNER and PARTNER 2 studies provide the medical evidence that people with an undetectable viral load can’t pass on HIV
Last November, Lloyd R ussell-Moyle, MP for Brighton Kemptown & Peacehaven, publicly announced during a debate in Parliament that he is
living with HIV and became the first sitting MP to do so Par t of his motivation for doing this was to provide the public with up-todate information about HIV
Lloyd Russell-Moyle MP , said: “One of the most empowering things in my life since being diagnosed is knowing that I can’t pass on HIV I can say with confidence that effective treatment means I can’t transmit HIV to my sexual partner and I’ve a perfectly healthy life, which is absolutely transformative
“During my speech in November when I disclosed to the world I was living with HIV, I said this news should go totally unnoticed but it didn’t The stigma surrounding HIV is still far too high and that’s why we need to double our efforts to stamp out misinformation about HIV I’m very proud to support THT in its 'Can’t Pass It On' campaign If everyone knew this simple yet transformative fact we could end the stigma and end the fear that many people still have towards HIV I’m living proof that HIV in no way holds you back in life and this is something to celebrate ”
Sadiq Ali is living with HIV and is par t of THT’s new stigma busting campaign as they feel passionately about educating others about the realities of living with the virus Sadiq said: “Knowing I can’t pass on HIV opens up a world where I’m okay to be HIV positive and still have sexual relationships, both casual and intimate ones, without HIV being a barrier The Can’t Pass It On campaign gives me as a HIV positive person a very easy way to inform and educate W ithout getting too specific, it gives me a way to describe the massive progress we’ve made that’s almost unknown It will interest and educate someone who’s not otherwise interested in HIV ”

NHS ENGLAND RECOMMENDS UNCAPPED ACCESS TO PREP TRIAL
) The HIV prevention drug PrEP is a step closer to being made available to anyone who needs it through the NHS This follows a meeting last month between Simon Stevens, Chief Executive of NHS England, NAT (National AIDS Trust), Terrence Higgins Trust (THT), and PrEPster NHS England announced five steps towards better access to the HIV prevention drug PrEP , including recommending removing the capped number of places on the ongoing national IMPACT Trial
Deborah Gold, Chief Executive of NAT, said: “The steps NHS England have outlined are extremely welcome ones, but there remain serious barriers to getting PrEP to those who need it We need the Department of Health and Social Care to commit the necessary funding for routine commissioning as planning for this begins in earnest
“Local authorities are running sexual health services with a disappearing pool of public health funding Sexual Health services are struggling Nevertheless we are facing an emergency People are getting HIV because of the shambolic postcode lottery that limits PrEP access; local authorities need to rise to the challenge of being able to provide it
“Lastly, we need the IMPACT Trial researchers to support the obvious argument that a trial designed to answer questions about implementing a new drug will only give meaningful results if data isn’t artificially deflated with a capped number of participants Currently, people are being diagnosed with HIV while they wait for PrEP to become available in their area – for those people it is too late for PrEP This is unacceptable NAT will remain at the forefront of the fight for this gamechanging drug ”

THE FOOD CHAIN IS IN CRISIS AND NEEDS YOUR HELP!
) For over 30 years the Food Chain have suppor ted people across London who are living with HIV Today they have their own kitchen in King’s Cross and provide a twice a week lunch service, bringing people together for a nutritious meal A safe place where people can be open about their HIV, socialise and combat isolation and loneliness They also provide cooking courses, nutrition advice and home delivered groceries
Thanks to modern medicines, today most people with HIV live long and healthy lives But these are not the people who necessarily come through the doors of the Food Chain People are referred to them at a time of crisis; and the Food Chain are a lifeline to some of the most vulnerable people in society
The Food Chain is now in crisis
All funders are under great pressure from all the charities that need their help and the funding pot is shrinking Unfor tunately, some of the Food Chain's regular annual funding has not been for thcoming or delayed due to the volume of applications this year They need to raise £40,000 immediately, and £100,000 by the end of the year to continue providing their much-needed services If they don’t raise these amounts, they will have to cut services and ultimately close their doors Yes, it’s that serious!
“I just wanted to let everybody at the Food Chain know how my life has changed, and all for the better I’ve managed to put another ½ kilo on ” Martyn
“Eating Together is nowhere near what I imagined it to be! It’s easy to talk to people there There’s such a great mix of people with different HIV experiencesstraight, gay, women and men all mingling with each other!” Grant

) Brighton & Hove Sea Serpents had their annual dinner at Hove R ugby Club on Saturday, June 22, following on from their AGM earlier in the afternoon Guest speaker for the evening was Gavin R oss, the president of Sussex RFU, who was clearly thrilled to have been invited to talk at the dinner
In his speech, Club Chairman Ian Chaplin repor ted 2019-20 was the club’s third full season and second in the Sussex Leagues Fifty-five players appeared in 31 games over league matches, friendlies and tournaments with five of those players appearing for the club for the first time The team won nine out of 19 league matches putting 421 points on the scoreboard in those games
With the help of the Glasgow Alphas, the Sea Serpents took a team to the Bingham Cup in Amsterdam and took a full squad of players to Newcastle to the Hadrian’s Cup 10s tournament - returning from both tournaments with silverware They also took a full squad of players to Dublin for the Union Cup
Ian said: "If people want to tell us that gay and inclusive rugby isn’t mainstream what is more mainstream than a rugby tournament with 45 sides from 14 countries sponsored by Bank of Ireland, Vodafone and Guinness, and what a lovely sight their brewery gates were We were upgraded to the second tier, showing how well we have progressed It wasn’t easy, and we didn’t pick up any silverware this time, but we are a strong club with a strong rugby game
"You can never guarantee the future, but I am confident that next season we will consolidate our place within Sussex RFU and next year we will take a squad to Ottawa for the Bingham Cup It’ll be hard work, but I trust you all to succeed "

MORNING GLORY
– BRIGHTON THREESOME EDINBURGH BOUND
Three of Brighton’s top men in the entertainment business head for the Edinburgh Fringe with a new one-man show about ageism in the LGBT+ communities. They tell Brian Butler why the issue is so topical and crucial to equal rights.
) Publisher and broadcaster Andrew Kay, who for many years was one of the country’s leading art directors for top publishing houses, has penned a dark and comic play which will set its audience thinking and talking
For over 16 years Andrew designed covers for books by authors such as Jackie Collins, Dame Edna and Brighton writer Peter James’ first four novels. Now an anchor and presenter at Brighton-based local commercial TV company Latest TV, he has turned his hand to writing a one-man show for his friend, local drag performer Jason Sutton (aka Miss Jason)
The third in the trio is Allan Cardew, a wellknown local theatre and event director In 2018 he directed Jason in a one-man show called Twinkle at the B Right On community festival “I liked Twinkle and Jason’s amazing performance as an ageing panto dame whose life was disintegrating ”
It inspired him to agree to direct Morning Glory specifically for Jason When Jason received the script, he replied within an hour Though there are plenty of laughs in the piece, it does treat a serious topic, that of ageism in the LGBT+ communities: “It deals with the hostile behaviour of some young gay men, a lack of understanding, ignorance and a complacency about how we got to where we are in terms of equality,” says Andrew.
The play centres round David, a 50-something gay man and tells of his night out with friends for a birthday and how the group are treated. “There are twists and turns in the story and I won’t give it all away but it does have a good ending,” says Allan
Allan has spent a lifetime organising corporate events, lecturing in drama and working at the now closed K-bis school in Brighton.
Many plays and big-cast musicals later he helped to found Brighton Cares in the 1990s, which through theatre groups helped raise funds for people with HIV. He works with actor Amanda Redman at her Ealing Artists Theatre School
“When I read Morning Glory I leapt at the chance of directing it. It’s a privilege to have such direct contact one to one with Jason This story is my story I was 15 when homosexuality was legalised It’s important everyone knows the history Today is built on the shoulders of what happened then It’s important to remember that back then I couldn’t get a mortgage with my gay partner "
Jason Sutton is well known in Brighton and further afield as Miss Jason, a character he created 21 years ago Jason was living in Portsmouth and met the drag legend Phil Starr “Phil got me going, and David Raven aka
“I love a live audience, it’s different every night and it’s a real exchange between humans”
Maisie Trollette helped me greatly Doing drag was the first job I really enjoyed I love a live audience, it’s different every night and it’s a real exchange between humans ”
His stage appearances have included plays and musicals - notably the Boys in the Band and Privates on Parade “Those shows made me hungry to do other things as well as drag When Twinkle happened it was the most challenging thing I’d ever faced. I wouldn’t have got through it without Allan. This new show is an immense compliment to me by Andrew.”
I asked Jason where he starts with a one-man script. “At the beginning. I’m very dyslexic, so reading and line-learning is hard. The three of us sat down for a long time and discussed the situation the character David finds himself in.”
Andrew adds “I could hear Jason’s voice when I wrote it and I knew how he would handle it. This is a very real and personal story and very emotional for all three of us. David loves his friends; he’s not a brave man and this is the first time he has taken a stand on anything, and he takes action and then tells us about the aftermath ”
Jason’s technique has been to learn the dialogue, tied to moves and actions, but admits “Once it’s in, it’s in If I get into a problem with the play, it’s only me who can get myself out of it David is very real to me I hope it’s a project we can develop if we can get sponsorship to carry it forward beyond Edinburgh ”
MORE INFO
) Morning Glory plays at Planet Bar, Edinburgh at 5pm, August 12 and twice daily at noon and 5pm, August 13-16.
) Jason will also appear as his drag personae Miss Jason for one night at the end of its Fringe run on August 16.

FEELING PECKISH?
Three tasty options to tempt your palate during Pride
NEW STEINE BISTRO
A slice of Paris in the heart of Kemptown
) This quirky French bistro offers traditional French dishes prepared from fresh local ingredients by young French trained chef Roman Martiné - who has been creating classic dishes in the New Steine kitchens for the last four years Located on the ground floor of the New Steine Hotel, the bistro seats just 20 people so it’s important to make a reservation There is also a room for private parties downstairs that can seat around 30 people
I’ve been eating at the New Steine Bistro for the last 15 years I’m a creature of habit and have to admit I nearly always order the same dishes starting with assiette de charcuterie, a sharing plate for two people (£13.75) with saucisson, chorizo, bayonne ham, duck
rillette pate and warm toast (supplement of £2.50 when part of the specials/offers).
Followed by a glorious rare rib eye steak with beurre Maître D’hôtel, salad and chips for £17.50 (supplement of £2.50 when part of the specials/offers) and closing with what for me is the best desert in the city, yes the city - a crème brulée served in a flat dish (£5.95).
For his main course my husband usually chooses the chicken ballotine stuffed with seasonal vegetables, served in a mustard sauce with gratin dauphinois (£14.50) Tender moist circles of chicken, perfectly prepared potatoes all dressed in a tasty mustard sauce. He usually finishes off with a moist peach tiramisu (£5.95).
Other dishes worth tasting include the soup of the day, which is always first class, the Sussex braised pork cheeks à la bourguignon served with mashed potatoes (£14.75) and always checkout what the special fish and meat dish of the day is - ask your waiter whats on offer.
New Steine Bistro offers a daily special menu which costs £13.95 for two courses, and £15.95 for three courses from Sunday to Thursday and £17.95 for two courses and £19.95 for three courses on Friday and Saturday.
I love eating at New Steine Bistro - it’s like dining in your own front room with friends The list of French wines is impressive and this Bistro and its owner, Herve Guyat, remains one of Brighton's best kept secrets. New Steine Bistro is closed for annual holidays during most of August.

) There are few place to lunch in comfort outside on Brighton seafront. Legends provides some of the best sea views while offering top notch lunch choices every afternoon till 5pm, and the venue is very dog friendly.
Their summer menu includes some new dishes well worth checking out Back Ribs in Smoked BBQ Sauce on the BBQ Street Style section are a must try - tender, delicious and a snatch at £8.95.
Deli Wraps are served in a warm deli-style wrap (or artisan white/ brown bread) with salad leaves & chips (£7.95) Fillings include honey roast pork, smoked salmon, chicken tikka, confit duck, home cured salt beef and hummus and avocado, and are a meal in themselves,
If you choose anything from the Burger section be prepared to wait for up to 20 minutes as they’re made completely from scratch However, it’s well worth the wait and the Spiced Lamb Burger with coriander chutney is my favourite dish on the whole menu, worth every penny of £9.95 - it’s spectacular!
On a summer ’ s day you might want a salad - try the Lightly Smoked Salmon Teriyaki (£8.95), which comes with poached egg, cherry tomato, mixed leaves and a tasty teriyaki sauce.

THREE JOLLY BUTCHERS
ALWAYS a cosy pub, SOMETIMES a sports pub
) A friendly bar popular with football supporters to meet before and after home games at the Albion, where they serve seriously tasty Thai street food. You can eat inside or outside on the pavement and the venue is very dog friendly.
Starters are £4.50, mains, including rice, £7.50 - two courses for £9.90 and a Lunch Menu (until 4pm) at £5.95. There are also four mixed starters to share for £8.90, with loads of vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options available.
I tried the Tom Kha Soup with lemon grass, lime leaves and mushrooms in creamy coconut milk with a choice of chicken, prawn or vegan: vegetable or tofu (£4.50) - a delicious starter packed with produce and very filling. Highly recommended!
As is my favourite dish on the whole menu! BBQ pork spare ribs marinated in honey and ginger prepared Thai BBQ style (£4.50). The sauce is unique and will leave you wanting more. Try the Thai style prawn crackers with sweet chilli dip (£2) to accompany any of your courses.
For the main course I had stir-fried cashew nut with chicken (also available with prawn, pork beef or vegan: vegetable or tofu). Full of flavours with perfect flaky rice. Other main course options include a selection of curries, fried rice dishes, noodles and Thai salads - all in all great value for money.

DANCE MUSIC
BY QUEEN JOSEPHINE & KATE WILDBLOOD
PRIDE
) Disco runs through our veins, like Pride, like glitter It’s the backbone of our days and the soundtrack to our nights It’s the anthems of our community and the history of our dancefloors
Since those early queer-fuelled nights filled with our black, Hispanic, gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans brothers and sisters, disco has delivered the dazzling beats for our revolution There would be no uprising as sound as ours without those glittering BPMs, no revolution as utterly, utterly fabulous darling
For disco is our life Our life at Pride when we come together as a community to celebrate, commentate and campaign Where every last dance is for those who came before us, every moment of Disco Heat for them This Brighton Pride we salute the sound that made our LGBT+ nightclubs the connection that kept us safe and sane, through crisis, through persecution, through loss and through life. This is for every Handsome Man, every Miss Honey, every disco Boss, and every Love Sensation who came dancing with us Happy Pride Everyone

DJ PROFILE: DJ ALPHA
Just in case you missed the memo, there’s a little celebration happening at the beginning of August in Brighton & Hove! So, whilst you polish up your flags, iron your sequined hot pants, get set to be prouder than proud and be prepared to dance like everyone is watching And who better to do that to than the glorious DJ Alpha
How are you? I’m doing really well - still recovering from an EPIC night DJing at FEST Camden for London Pride… It was one of the best events I’ve been to in a long time
Where are you DJing over Pride? You can catch me at: The Women’s DIVA Dance Tent @ Present Park, Sat 3rd (time TBC); Brighton Pride Closing Party @ OHSO Social on Sun 4th (time TBC); and Sunday Service @ The Tempest Inn, Sun 4th at 11pm–12.30am.
What are your plans for the big weekend? This is one of my busiest weekends of the year and it’s very unusual for me to get out from behind so I’ve planed some musical surprises and thrills for everyone
What tune will you HAVE to play and what’s your fave Pride tune ever? My favourite Pride tune has got to be Sunset to Sunrise by Whelan and Di Scala, and Andrea Laddo’s Sassobasso (The Cube Guys Remix) is the tune I’ll definitely be playing this year!
What are you looking forward to most about Pride? Since starting a family Pride means much more to me, especially with all that’s going on in the world! It’s vital that we continue to fight for equal rights for ourselves and for our children. I’m looking forward to being part of the march and showing the world that Love Is Love, no matter in what form! Have you sorted out your outfits yet? I wish! Usually I’m really prepared, like months in advance, but I move house the week before Pride so I’m having to leave everything to the last minute eeekkkkk! Fave Pride memory? Oh god, there are so many! I’ll have to say though that DJing the Women’s Dance Tent in 2016 was an incredible experience. The tent was massive and there were thousands of people singing and dancing along to my set. The energy was insurmountable! Pride aside, do you have any other exciting projects going on at the moment and where else can we see you play? After Pride I plan to take a few weeks off and go on my travels to Ibiza
Guilty pleasure? Digestive biscuits topped with Bovril and peanut butter… nom!

) COME BACK TO THE FIVE AND DIME JIMMY DEAN, JIMMY DEAN (Eureka blu-ray). Robert Altman directed this filmed play set in a Texas ghost town in the 1950s and the 1970s A group of James Dean fans, including Cher, Kathy Bates and Sandy Dennis, meet up for the 20 year anniversary of their idol’s death They’re joined by mysterious stranger Karen Black who appears to be vaguely familiar Secrets are revealed, lies exposed and there’s a lot of mirthless laughter with some of the later scenes seemingly filmed amongst inmates of an asylum. The performances are great, especially Dennis as the woman who believes herself the mother of Dean’s semimessiah son. The lacklustre transfer is both soft and grainy but th t’ almost certainly due to limitations of the original 16mm stock.

THE BRIGHTON BIRDCAGE
The Brighton Birdcage is a breathtakingly fabulous boutique shop aimed at the drag, trans and cross-dresser communities. Eric Page catches up with (co-director) Nick Jordan to talk shop.
) How does a bespoke boutique help nervous shoppers?
“For the first time you can come into a shop and feel safe trying on clothing and not be judged, you can put on a dress, heels and a wig and walk up and down the shop without other shoppers looking I’ve seen people turned away from dressing rooms in the past, because of their assumed gender, or the ‘ wrong ’ clothes they wanted to try we live in a more tolerant society but we still have a long way to go ”
You offer a discreet service for not so fierce or bold customers to explore...
“We do, you can either make an appointment or pop in and have a chat, we can advise you on a few things or try anything on, with no pressure what so ever We have a lower level in the shop which is private and discreet. It’s very important that our customers trust us and feel safe.”
How long have you been involved in the world of transformative clothing?
“This is new for me, I’ve had to learn a lot. There’s much more to this world than people realise. When we were setting up we spoke to a broad spectrum of trans people to learn how
they like things and what they would like to see in a shop like ours. ”
What do you offer to the trans communities?
“We offer similar products to the trans community as to the drag customer, but with a difference: we cater for both but we have body shaping, daywear, and more natural wigs as well as excellent make-up and jewellery ”
Does it make a difference to the customer being able to try clothes before buying?
“Customers love a place where they can come and try things before they buy We all have bought off the internet and when it arrives it's too small, too large! Here you can see what works for you, get things right ”
How does your experience influence the help and advice you offer?
“Because we know what it’s like to wear these outfits, shoes etc, but also wigs and make-up and how to get the best out of the products It’s not just about slapping a dress on and painting your face - it takes work and we like to help everyone to get the maximum results ”
Most exquisite thing you’ve ever worn?
“Unlike my partner I don’t dress, but I have a
favourite leather jacket from Nico Didonna, it’s a one off and I love it ”
Who inspires you? “In life, my partner Wain.”
Why ‘Brighton Birdcage’?
“From the film The Birdcage starring Robin Williams, which is based on the book/musical La Cage Aux Folles and is about relationships and life in the world of drag.”
How has drag and transformative glamour dressing changed in the last decade?
“Hugely, from the RuPaul phenomena and the performers coming through. There’s many more trans models and personalities now in the media It's more acceptable and our aim is to make a relaxed place to try our styles With so much media coverage, everyone loves the drag world and it’s mainstream, many people from all walks of life want to do drag or try it We offer a place where people can come and discover themselves and not be afraid of people staring and pointing, a safe haven for everyone. ”
Apart from the stunning outfits and fully styled wigs what else do you stock?
“We’re a one stop shop, covering everything from wigs to heels and everything in between. We have jewellery, make-up, shoes and body shaping, eyelashes, tights, underwear, sunglasses and we ’ re always looking for more to add to our range. We’re also the only retail outlet in Brighton to stock Kryolan make-up, loved and used by make-up artists worldwide.”
Your windows are WOW! Simple, theatrical and show stopping!
“Thanks! We’re one of a kind and the comments
we hear outside the shop are incredible Our theatre background has influenced us, we ’ re committed to being a classy place to visit and the windows need to reflect that, theatrical but full on class and style. I love walking by in the evenings and seeing the lights on in the window, I’m so proud I can't help smiling.”
You’ve got some seriously fierce items in the shop, but nothing that will break the bank. “We want our customers to come back knowing that they can afford to get a new outfit at a good price. Make the prices too high then no one comes... We all have a budget and our prices reflect that. There’s something for everyone no matter your budget.”
Most glamorous member of your family?
“Well of course, my mum. Barbara Walter was my theatrical mum, one of the campest people ever and wouldn't even answer the phone without a full face of make-up; she would love the shop and the reason behind it ”
What would your grandmother have thought about the shop?
“Interesting question, I think my nan would have loved to have a look around, even if she wasn't 100% sure who it was aimed at ”
Why the North Laines?
“We wanted a part of Brighton that was easy to get to from the train station It’s an amazing community, very diverse but the location is also discreet, perfect for us Wain was performing here and fell in love with the place; I visited and did the same, so we moved There’s nothing like the Birdcage here or in the UK It seemed an obvious choice to set up here!”
Do you work with any local LGBT+ charities?
“We’re involved with the LGBT+ Safety Forum We want to help the community that has given so much to us in the short time we have lived here and we feel a part of something special. It’s just so nice to be able to give something back.”
Any advice for someone who longs to look fabulous and unique?
“Take a trip to the Brighton Birdcage!”
What’s your favourite joke?
“It's not necessarily my favourite joke but one I heard the other day: A man said to his partner ‘Everybody hates me ’ , ‘Don’t be so ridiculous’ replied his partner ‘not everybody knows you ’ . ”

HOLD ON, PAIN ENDS
The necessity of hope by Craig Hanlon-Smith
The HOPE Charity Project aims to be a support and therapeutic opportunity for families and individuals struggling to manage the complexities around mental health challenges and their impact upon all those involved They are thrilled to have been chosen as the main charity to receive support from Worthing Pride this year With a young person focus, and as failing mental health disproportionately affecting LGBT+ youth, HOPE seems a fitting partner for this growing Pride event.
The HOPE Charity Project evolved from personal experience by its founder Claire Sparrow. Unable to access any help, support or have anywhere to turn during Claire’s own family’s cry for help, she felt that something was desperately needed for them and all the other thousands of families going through a similar experience, and so the project was born.
“Finding your child attempting suicide by finding them hanging in their bedroom isn’t a sight I wish on any parent to experience And all because the system failed us as a family”
In 2016, after months of trying to get support and help for Claire’s 12-year-old’s anxiety and depression, it took almost an unimaginable tragedy to get professional attention and help Even then the help offered had the opposite effect to the one needed. As a last resort Claire’s child was admitted to a mental health hospital and it was here that she began to appreciate how damaged the system was: “The standards and lack of sufficiently trained agency staff in these units were a cause for the condition to worsen rather than improve. Eight months of our child being in hospital was more like watching her in a prison Twelve years old, severely depressed, away from her family, subjected to additional traumatic experiences she should never have had to see or go through All because there wasn’t anywhere for us to get the help and support when she originally needed it ”
It was during this traumatic experience that they as a family became aware of just how
many families are struggling behind closed doors with nowhere to turn. Complex mental health cases in young people as young as eight are rising dramatically. Anxiety, panic attacks, self-harm, depression, eating disorders, gender/body dysphoria to name a few These can in turn lead to withdrawal, violent outbursts, school refusal, disruption at home, breakdowns, and all too regularly, suicide or in Claire’s daughter’s case attempted suicide
“There wasn’t a place to go that had the therapeutic nurturing impact that’s needed for this serious area of health for our adolescent generation. So we created one. ”
The HOPE Charity Project provides a space where those that need to be heard can get some support and have somewhere to go to meet others that understand and will care.
The HOPE Charity Project converted a donated shipping container into a support and therapy centre, constructed from donated and recycled materials and the kindness of skilled tradesmen helping out for free. They connect families in the local community with each other so they know they aren’t alone and not the only ones struggling with these worries. They work with one another to provide emotional support. “The HOPE Charity Project is the place where these young people can come to meet others with similar worries, fears, sadness, frustration They too can realise they aren’t alone and won’t be judged, rejected or ignored Early Intervention and Prevention is our aim ”
The Hope Charity Project is run by families and the professionals that want to make a difference to help as many as they can and quickly The need for such initiatives to provide such services to the UK public has never been greater
“We’re always looking out for venues and rural areas for us to be able to expand our services/ facilities, to enable us to help more young people and their families covering a greater area. If you could help or would like to get onboard, involved in any way, we would love to hear from you. We need your help and support to keep this going”.

ALL THAT JAZZ
) GIOVANNI GUIDI Avec Le Temps (ECM). For no particularly reason, other than what I’ve been listening to recently, this month’s column is devoted to pianists. First up is Italian pianist Giovanni Guidi, here fronting a quintet on his fourth ECM outing Guidi’s is a quiet voice, rarely raising his music above a whisper, yet he allows saxophonist Francesco Bearzatti considerable freedom to move into explorations of pure sound Drummer João Lobo is subtlety itself, although not afraid to explore the full sonic potential of his drum kit, while bassist Thomas Morgan is resonantly superb. This set works as well as it does because it presents an intriguing contrast between collective quietism and individual free expression, the oftenhaunting themes supporting solos that open out in unexpected and sometimes raucous ways For its combination of the beautiful and the harsh, the traditional and adventurous, it cannot be bettered
) AHMAD JAMAL TRIO Complete Live at the Spotlite Club 1958 (Essential Jazz Classics). American pianist Ahmad Jamal was apparently Miles Davis’s favourite piano player, although they never actually recorded together, but it is easy to see why the ever-cool Miles so favoured Jamal’s understated, light-touch fingering, his dramatic use of space, and his superb sense of swing and rhythm Jamal, who at 89 is still alive and recording today, recorded a series of fine studio and live sets during the 1950s, of which this 2xCD club set from the Spotlite Club in Washington DC is one of the best. With a trio of Israel Crosby on bass and Vernell Fournier on drums, Jamal tackles 27 songs, playing such standards as Autumn Leaves and Stompin’ At The Savoy as well as his own Ahmad’s Blues’ Since this is a club set, you can hear glasses clinking in the background and cash registers ringing in the takings, but that is to be expected, and enjoyed
) FRED HERSCH & THE WDR BIG BAND Begin Again (Palmetto). I suppose it is still every jazz musician’s dream to front a big band, especially one as fine as the current Cologne-based WDR ensemble American pianist Fred Hersch has always been a man with dreams, and he obviously enjoyed his big band experience immensely All the nine tracks on this set were written by Hersch, their arrangements and conducting held in the more than capable hands of Vince Mendoza. The serried ranks of 13 saxophones, trombones and trumpets sumptuously cushion the arrangements, although I found some of their charts a tad traditional, but they do allow plenty of space for Hersch’s and others’ vital solo contributions Best track by far is The Big Easy, with its evocative New Orleans flavour enhanced by a fine gutbucket trombone solo from Ludwig Nuss As a big band outing, it is true to say that this set could have been recorded at any time in the last 50 years, but then some good things just don’t age

CL ASSICAL NOTES
REVIEWS
) JEAN-EFFLAM BAVOUZET, Plays Schuman, (Chandos CHAN20081) Pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet has turned his attention to Robert Schumann (1810-1856), and the Grande Sonate No 3, a grand statement indeed, right from the opening flourish, which unleashes an almost unruly cascade of ideas.
The Scherzo with its frantic running scales leads to a rhapsodic set of variations. The capricious finale bursts through, propelled forward to the very end. Bavouzet makes sense of the somewhat rambling form, bringing together into a coherent arc the disparate ideas, without allowing any of the frequent dramatic outbursts to upset the overall trajectory In the Faschingsschwank aus Wien that follows, a five movement collection of festive scenes, Bavouzet is at times playful and joyous, and at other times accentuating the intimate and passionate.
The Drei Fantasiestücke are darker, with surging C minor waves in the first, and the outwardly hefty march of the third disguising its more wistful centre. Similarly, the central fantasy surrounds a darkly elusive section with seemingly song-like calm Bavouzet is alert to these contrasts throughout Finally, the Gesänge der Frühe (Songs of Dawn), which again combine an introspection and sadness, with more confident, assertive and at times extremely agitated music But a sense of calm, albeit with deep sadness, is arrived at eventually in the Amen cadence at the conclusion of the final movement. Again, Bavouzet is sensitive to the inherent contradictions here, and never allows Schumann’s more bombastic moments to be over-stated – the
sadness and beauty is never far beneath the surface
) CAMERON CROZMAN & PHILIP CHIU, Cavatine (Atma Classique ACD22787) Canadian cellist
Cameron Crozman has chosen an all-French line up for his first recording Joined by pianist Philip Chiu, the two substantial works here are the Sonatas For Cello & Piano by Poulenc (1899-1963) and Debussy (1862-1918) Poulenc’s Sonata is a characteristically quirky piece, full of sprightly wit. Crozman contrasts the playfulness of the first movement with the more lyrical, songlike second movement (the Cavatine that gives the disc its title) with a slightly shrill tone for the former and a richer, warmer sound for the latter
The scherzo-like Ballabile is full of spirit, and Crozman dances through it with a light touch, leading to the sprightly finale Whilst the Debussy Sonata too has moments of wit, it is a weightier affair, and Crozman and Chiu’s reading brings out the darkness in Debussy’s harmonies and textures.
The Koechlin (1867-1950) Chansons Bretonnes that follow inevitably feel slight by comparison, but that does these modal-infused miniatures an
injustice. The selection chosen here have mournful, simple melodies on the whole, allowing Crozman to show off a warmly lyrical tone, particularly in the sombre lament, Notre-Dame du Folgoat, yet he maintains a lightness of touch in Iannik Skolan
They are followed by a set of Variations de concert by Jean Françaix (1912- 1997) from 1950, with a bouncy, offbeat theme varied with rapid gallops and a whirling waltz contrasting with a lilting, lyrical rendition, and a pizzicato variation with pecking piano accompaniment, all building
to a whirling presto finish A great showpiece, and Crozman delivers its technical demands with ease
Somewhat unexpected as a finale to the disc is the movement for cello and piano from Messiaen’ s (1908-1992) Quatuor Pour La Fin Du Temps (Quartet for the end of Time), composed and premiered (with Messiaen on the piano) in a concentration camp in 1941. Louange à L’Éternité De Jésus has a longing, desperate cello melody, and Crozman’s plaintive tone, over Chiu’s soft yet ever present chords, dying away peacefully to nothing at the end makes for a poignant end to this impressive disc
)
EMMA JOHNSON & THE CARDUCCI STRING QUARTET, Beethoven, Weber/Kuffner & Strauss/Johnson, (Somm SOMMCD0190) And now for a great chamber music recording, taken from a live performance at Turner Sims, University of Southampton in 2017, when clarinetist Emma Johnson was joined by the Carducci String Quartet, Chris West (double bass), Philip Gibbon (bassoon) and Peter Francombe (horn)
The centrepiece of their programme was Beethoven’ s Septet, Op. 20, a relatively early work, and a great success at its first performance in 1800 It is a work clearly modelled on the Mozartian Serenades or Divertimenti, but Beethoven, of course, develops the genre, not least in his chosen septet scoring. Johnson et al’s performance here is lively and spirited throughout, and given this is a live recording, there are remarkably few unclean moments. In general the balance is good, although when Beethoven unusually puts the double bass, horn and bassoon altogether at the end of the first movement, the sound is a little muddy Johnson is beautifully lyrical in the Adagio, answered with equal warmth by Matthew Denton (violin).
CINEMA
The sound gets a little rustic in the lively final Presto, which might be polished up in a studio recording, but admirably communicates the spirit of the live performance
They precede the Septet with an Introduction, Theme and Variations for clarinet and string quartet, attributed to Carl Maria von Weber, but in fact now thought to be by Joseph Küffner (1776-1856). This is a beautifully summery work, with a bright joyful theme for the clarinet over a rippling, light string accompaniment The variations ratchet up the virtuosity for the clarinet, and the pace quickens for the final dash to the conclusion Johnson is bright and agile throughout here They end with two ‘bonbons’ –Johnson’s own arrangements for all eight players of Frülingsstimmen and Perpetuum Mobile, by Johann Strauss II. The former is a piece of fun, the waltz tunes performed with warmth and gusto, and then Johnson’s arrangement of the latter passes the interest around the players, including delightful exchanges between the clarinet and bassoon, and then violin and double bass A crowd-pleasing conclusion to their concert, no doubt, and to this delightful disc too.

DANIEL EVANS
– FROM THE WELSH VALLEYS TO CHICHESTER
Two-time Olivier Award winner Daniel Evans talks to Brian Butler about being a child TV star, working with the iconic composer Stephen Sondheim and giving notes to an opera diva.
) Brought up in the Welsh valleys, Daniel Evans, current artistic director at the Chichester Festival Theatre, was well grounded in speaking and singing at both chapel and Eisteddfod before he was 10. His first steps were as a 12-year-old child TV actor: “Luckily I grew up speaking Welsh and the Welsh language TV Channel 4 had just started broadcasting They came to my school and I auditioned In one series, the Eye Of The Dragon, I got kidnapped and taken to Hong Kong and we actually went there to film ”
Many teenage roles followed and then at 18 he got into the prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London’s Barbican Even before the end of the course Daniel was offered a one-year contract at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon, but as he had enough course credits he still graduated He remembers his time at the Guildhall fondly: “You had singers and instrumentalists on campus. It was a great atmosphere. The training on how to look after your voice and body was second to none. ”
His two Olivier Awards were earned in shows written by Stephen Sondheim: Merrily We Roll Along and Sunday in the Park with George, which also took him to Broadway. How was working with the genius Sondheim?
“Very scary - he is no slouch. He’s very firm about what he wants but it’s a great privilege to work with him and learn from the horse’s mouth in one-to-one sessions. He’s also very generous and was very supportive of me. ”
Having started so young, did you feel ready in your 30s to direct? “I’d always been interested in the whole project of doing a show - lighting, design, text. Acting is wonderful but
also frustrating: you just work at your piece I need to have a more creative input into the whole production.”
His seven years as director of the Sheffield Crucible were highly rewarding Sir Anthony Sher starred in his first production An Enemy of the People, and the theatre was named Regional Theatre of the Year twice in a rowan unequalled feat.
Daniel is very strong on the relationship between a theatre and its various communities. Coming to Chichester he had preconceptions that the audience demographic would be different from the urban landscape of Sheffield. “But there are lots of socio-economic problems along the south coast and the craving of old and young to be involved, to have connections is why our learning and education outreach
work, including dementia and mental health work here is so important ”
Last year’s production of the marvellous Mike Bartlett play Cock raised some eyebrows among stalwart theatre-goers.
“They couldn’t bring themselves even to mention its title, but a new audience from the university came to see it I want to make the theatre a place for everyone. This theatre was built by the community for the community. And some people have been attending for 50 years. There is of course a rich theatrical heritage here and when the Queen visited recently she recalled seeing the great actor in Uncle Vanyathere’s still an Olivier inheritance here.”
How does the year-long programme get put together?
“There’s always got to be a balance amongst the different audiences and different times of year.
I’m constantly having discussions with directors and actors about their ideas of what we should do Pieces float together Sometimes things can’t fit in and I like to surprise people too ”
You’ve directed as many plays as musicals, but musical theatre really attracts you.
“There’s something about the release you get from singing - it’s different from acting That’s true of directing too ”
As we speak you’re hot foot from directing the musical A Light in the Piazza with opera legend Renee Fleming, how was that?
“I’ve never known dedication like it She knew all the dialogue and songs on day one She’s very happy to take notes and is a brilliant company leader The show will go later in the year to Los Angeles and Chicago.”
Would you like to act again?
“Yes, but nothing is shouting at me - more Shakespeare and more Sondheim, but I’m a bit young for most of his parts.”
A new initiative at Chichester is the introduction of a 50/50 gender balance.
“We’re holding the mirror up to nature as Shakespeare said so we should reflect the world as it is. As a gay man I know how important equality is.”
Do you get involved with all the productions once they are running?
“Yes I go backstage and talk to people and to the directors. I like to give feedback. It’s a hard part of the job. Working with a director like Sir Richard Eyre is great. His work is so wonderful.”
Would you give Sir Richard notes if necessary? “Yes, I wouldn’t be afraid to.”
What advice would you give a young Daniel?
“Not to be worried if people don’t always like what you do. Have faith in what you are doing.”
Daniel’s certainly showing that in his highly successful tenure at Chichester
CRAIG’S THOUGHTS
Revolting Queers.
By Craig Hanlon-Smith @craigscontinuum
) I write this in the approach to Pride in London 2019, wonderfully entitled: ‘Pride Jubilee – 50 Years of Queer Revolt’. The term queer has made something of a celebratory comeback in recent years and appears to be the go-to self-descriptor for all those who perhaps feel they aren’t fitting increasingly conservative LGBT moulds It wasn’t always like that We were all just Queer
In 1987, on a family trip to London, I remember sitting in The Stockpot, Haymarket carefully navigating my way through a watery and therefore understandably cheap spaghetti bolognese The Stockpot was a London institution so popular that customers would find themselves unceremoniously stuffed onto a bench at a table with at least three strangers none of whom had previously met as recently as one smarting gulp of wine ago.
At the table across from our excitable family group I was transfixed by two gentleman who clearly knew one another exceedingly well. There was nothing in the way of what the 1980s swimming pool attendants would call ‘heavy petting’, but a familiarity with one another which led to their adjusting his and his collars and winter scarves There was a theatricality to their camp hand gestures and, superficially, they were dressed in that wellbred public-school attire made fashionable by Rupert Everett and Colin Firth in the 1984 film Another Country They talked and touched and fussed and sometimes screeched and I was transfixed by them By their beautiful skin, foppy Timotei-blond hair, and by their seemingly open ability to be Queer.
By contrast their table partner, an elegant and immaculately dressed woman some 30 years their senior, managed to ignore them completely by continuously reading the limited menu as though it were a Barbara Cartland novel, with facial expressions as dramatic as a Cartland cliff-hanger. Presumably corned beef hash held the same dramatic interest as a swashbuckling cad on horseback.
Soon enough the gentlemen friends paid their bill and mere seconds after they swished off to
no doubt a champagne reception awash with University scarves, they were replaced by two women of a similar disposition to the one remaining diner who dramatically pushed her enthralling menu novel to one side and gripped the table with both hands as if rescuing herself from an immediate sinkhole “Thank goodness,” she sighed, exhaustingly relieved at the sight of her new dinner guests. “I have for 30 minutes endured two queers at this table both of whom were making me feel quite sick.”
Although they were many worlds away from who I was at that time, I knew in that moment that I had more in common with those camelcoat wearing ‘ queers ’ than anyone else in my company. I also knew that were my own secret to be exposed I would have turned many a stomach in that eatery too. Thirty years ago, Queers, Gays, Homos, Poofs were at best a figure of fun at worst inflicting sexual deviancy and death upon the unsuspecting innocent normal folk
When I think back to those gentlemen now, who must have been 25 years old, I wonder if they’re still alive Not only were they contending with unsettling the conservative majority in a bargain basement café but gay men at that time were living with the fear and stigma of an HIV epidemic; it must have been terrifying Perhaps they were ill themselves but didn’t know. I hope they’ve lived to tell the tale and are gleefully ripping up middle age with a spring in their step-ball-change.
Today I had lunch with a long-standing friend of mine who, in 1987, would have been around the same age as the gentlemen in our story above. Within five years his partner would die from AIDS related infections and he would himself be diagnosed as HIV+. In the
early 1990s, and early on in our friendship, he would narrowly escape death himself, twice He would not only survive but live long enough for a revolution in pharmaceutical medicine and the availability of antiretroviral drugs which have saved the lives of millions. In 2019 he is living a healthy life with a strong CD4 count and an undetectable viral load which means he can’t pass the HIV virus on.
Requiring a routine operation unrelated to any previous condition, he would be directed to a local private clinic which commissions NHS services. He will be seen by the consultant and a surgery appointment agreed. He would then be refused surgery following advice from the consultant anaesthetist: “We won’t operate on you because your immune system is compromised ” The immune system is not compromised, the CD4 count is healthy and the viral load undetectable “It is our policy We will refer you back to your GP and you will be redirected to an NHS hospital ” Hospitals in the UK who have commissioned NHS services at the instruction of our Government are refusing to treat HIV+ people in 2019.
So more than 30 years on from our Haymarket Queers inflicting a feeling of nausea upon an unsuspecting conservative majority, what has really changed?
We’re about to give the keys to Number 10 Downing Street to one of the following: a man who has discretely begun to dismantle the health service right under our noses. A health service which refuses to treat an HIV+ man who has spent his life paying into it. Alternatively, and most likely, to a man who refers to Queer men as ‘bum-boys’ and likens same-sex marriage to that of marrying a dog. Our shops and services are adorned with rainbows and we can buy LGBT+ flavoured produce from shampoo to vodka to soft furnishings, and yet, between 2013 and 2018, LGBT+ hate crimes in England and Wales have risen by a whopping 114%
The commercialisation of Pride is in someway inevitable Any popular event, or dare I say product, is monopolised and cheaper versions flogged for a fiver on the local market But at a time when there are campaigns to keep children out of primary schools in case they’re exposed to LGBT+ positive messaging, I’m pleased those people have to walk down a high street adorned with rainbow flags and pro-pride messaging. But it isn’t enough.
Enjoy Kylie, and whoever else, but remember that the first Pride was a riot and the first brick thrown for very good reason. Those reasons haven’t left us. For a number of years they were hiding but increasingly they are back to put us into our place. It has never been more important to bring out your queer, and revolt.
“Hospitals in the UK who have commissioned NHS ser vices at the instr uction of our Gover nment are refusing to treat HIV+ people in 2019”

HAPPY PRIDE!
) Folk that I speak to talk a lot about how much Pride has changed over the years. It used to be a 'community' event, where stalls for non-profit support groups vastly outweighed the burger bars and beer tents. However, when I think about the way our world has changed, Pride really hasn't changed much at all, or has changed for the better. It's true that in the late 1980s, when I began attending Pride events, there was lots more non-profit visibility from all over the country. But back then we didn't have the internet as a resource. Nowadays a support group has a website, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter pages as standard. The group is accessible from all over the world. Heck, my favourite radio station is JOY 94 9 out of Melbourne; it's where I get much of my international LGBT+ news - and some great music!
In the early years Pride seldom broke even, in fact many times was bankrupt. Now, Pride in Brighton raises thousands of pounds for the Rainbow Fund, which makes a huge difference across the region And this year Kylie Minogue is headlining - where else can you get a day festival ticket for under £40 and be able to see someone of her calibre perform? So yes, Pride is no longer a backwater retreat in a hostile world; it's now a mainstream retreat in a hostile world And in its own way, it is still changing the world
“Pride raises thousands of pounds for the Rainbow Fund which makes a huge difference across the region. And this year Kylie is headlining - where else can you get a day festival ticket under £40 to see someone of her calibre?”
Many groups will still have stalls so you can meet the volunteers personally The Village MCC will be providing Jesus Deck card readings for those who want to explore their spiritual journey in more depth, and offering temporary tattoos – always lots of fun! Lunch Positive will be offering great food; many of the LGBT+ choirs will be there so you can meet them too And of course, besides the non-profit groups, there are always the wonderful speciality vendors Last year my husband bought me a pair of crochet braces, handmade by a very talented (and cute) bear cub
At the Village MCC we also celebrate Pride weekend, and this year our guest speaker on August 4 is Councillor Alexandra Phillips, the current Mayor of Brighton & Hove. Alex is also our MEP now, but she'll be talking about Pride in her role as the Mayor - complete with bling! Did you know that she's Brighton's youngest ever Mayor? And a wonderfully warm and affirming person to talk with.
Pride is a wonderful event, and is changing year on year just as the world changes year on year. With more rainbows than a flurry of unicorns, it's still a reminder that we have reason to be proud of who we are. Not that we ’ re better than anyone else, but that nobody has the right to make us feel ashamed of who we are. Whether transgender or non-binary, lesbian or gay, bisexual or straight, we are who God made us To say that we should be ashamed of who we are is to say that God should be ashamed of what God chooses to create God isn't ashamed, God is proud! As we should be Happy Pride!
GAY WISDOM
BY
IS ‘FITTING IN’ MAKING YOU SICK?
) The Brighton Faeries are officially marching in this year ’ s Pride Parade. Yep we booked ourselves a ‘walking float’ slot for up to 30 marching Faeries! This is a controversial move because, as everyone knows, the Faeries are very elusive creatures. You might catch a glimpse of one and then, Pouff, gone, never to be seen again…
The Faerie ‘development of consciousness’ grew from the US counter culture and gay civil rights movements of the late 1960s. Within 10 years of the Stonewall riots, a call went out to convene ‘ gay brothers’ to a Spiritual Conference of Radical Faeries. Those interested in ‘ reestablishing a communication with Nature and the Great Mother and, in feeling the essential link between sex and the forces that hold the universe together’ were invited to come together (literally) for a long weekend in early September 1979
Since then Queer Folk from across the spectra of gender and sexuality have been hearing the call to convene in Nature and to celebrate the awesome naturalness of their sexual and gender queerness Faerie Gatherings are about queers co-creating foundational intentional community - nurturing and celebrating our ancient historical roles as medicine people, healers, prophets, shamans, witches and sorcerers We encourage ourselves to engage with that endless and fathomless process of coming out as Queer, as animals, as humans AND as mysterious and powerful spirits that move through the life cycle of the cosmos
The tradition of Faerie-ness has been counter to the cultural pressure from the mainstream to assimilate; to resist the lure of acceptance ‘ as long as you can just stop being THAT WAY’ Faeries drill down into what it feels like (and what it means) to be ‘THAT WAY’ As Faeries we endeavour to be more ‘THAT WAY’ than we ever were before!
Faerie-ness resists ‘fitting in’ It proudly and queerly presents itself as a challenge to the status quo; as an opportunity to bring to consciousness those forces which endeavour to obliterate differentness. So, what are the Faeries doing in a Pride Parade with its corporate drive to have the queers put on a show, draw the crowds and bring millions in capital to boost the Brighton business economy?
The irony of a non-political parade celebrating 50 years of queer civil rights activism would be funny if it weren’t so creepy.
Well, Faerie-ness has been a little known and barely recognised force empowering queers, over the years to refuse to fit into an inauthenticity-glorifying world. If you ’ re reading this before the Parade, look out for us. We’ll simply be turning up in all our noncorporate weird uniqueness and representing that awkward voice asking: 'Is this all there is?’
If any of all this chimes with you then find the Faerie Camp @ Queer Spirit Summer Festival in Northamptonshire from August 14-18 or just Google Albion Faeries and see what it’s like to co-create spiritually nurturing community together at a Gathering.
CHARLIE SAYS
Fanfare of the Global Proud.
By Charlie Bauer Phd.
http://charliebauerphd blogspot co uk
) What happened to gay? What’s with all this acceptance? Over 50 cities across the globe are celebrating Global Pride this year Because it’s 50 years since a certain lesbian was arrested, looked a drag queen in the face and asked if they were finally going to do anything about it. It’s 50 long years since a drag queen threw a size 10 stiletto into the face of a cop. It’s 50 years since the fight began. Now, even Donald Trump turns a blind eye when he appoints his Satan daughter and her facedead husband as Queer ambassadors (before he became more interested in moving embassies across Israel and lost interest) Even Vlad Putin has bigger fists to fly now Remember when the only shocking news coming out of Russia was the beating of trans women in Pushkin Square outside Russia’s first ever fast-food takeaway?
Perhaps more interesting was the recent rant in Barcelona from some heteroconflicted nincompoop about ‘beating the gay ’ out of someone Complaining about a young gayer wearing a pair of daisy-dukes at the Ramblas McDonalds during Spanish Pride (The Ramblas for lord’s sake It’s gay/trans sacred ground, is it not? Well not in Maccy D’s). Go take a look at the video and at the ineffectual security guard as the brain-turded a-hole shouts that there are children present and that cut-offs just aren’t de rigueur within the realm of certain Scottish fast-food outlets. In front of his own children, he says he will hit him so hard, he will ‘beat the gay out of you ’ Nice I don’t eat this food myself but I’m sure shamed by my working class global culture and not just by feeding Unhappy Meals to the kiddies
At one end there is the religious right, then the religious poor, then the good honest fathers who don’t want their offspring ‘exposed’ to anything gay lest they become ‘tainted’ (Like they won’t be by sugar-coated French fries) It becomes clear that here we
have three men, two straight, one gay and there is somehow an ‘altercation’ Sound familiar? Here’s the news Fifteen percent will become ‘tainted’ before they’re born. You’ve got to live with that one, Steve. I know, it’s not easy but here I go tying the non-cisgender fluid with under educated caucasians, high calorific instant foodstuffs, Southern State American xenophobianism and African postcolonial non progressive cultures. Jesus tonight
Lest we forget the land of the free that in these times of ‘populism’ (a name grab by the right. Meaning that anyone with a brain is by definition ‘unpopular’ In the same way that anyone who thinks abortion is a woman ’ s right to choose takes on an opposite and nasty moniker of ‘anti-life’ instead of ‘pro-life’) It might appear that the further we get away from the doctrines about some god or other, the more we move towards inclusion of all things including queerness
Perhaps it really is ‘education’ in the end (that’s what the missionaries thought too)
Now, think of Uganda and other African countries ‘civilised’ with some version of that exclusively white doctrine: Christianity Then look to the most homophobic states in the land of the free: the south, the Alabamas and the Mississippis Then look at the bands of homophobia and how it compresses itself onto
power and slavery and blackness and allaround general racism, colonising oppression and dogma Regarding Africa, academics usually point out South Africa in this argument here because it’s apparently more ‘progressive’ I’m not saying that apartheid was ever homoblind, but that the fight in South Africa was political, not ideological or religious It’s those nations nearer the equator that give us pause. The Ugandas and the Mauritanias, the Sudans, the Nigerias - the Christian colonies. The American south. Places where the battle is both religious and ideological. Places that are still 10% Queer.
I say this because Pride is much more than gay or marching up a street with a banner. Global pride is also about global responsibility. A lesbian and a drag queen took a similar responsibility in 1969. And we do responsibility very well Remember getting our best clothes all mucked-up as we lay down on the street every other minute during the early AIDS marches?
Two years ago I found myself doing the same at New York Pride in support of the Pulse nightclub massacre The deadliest terrorist attack in the US since 9/11 On the floor we went on top of one another Of course then we were convinced that Hillary was going to be elected Because we all knew through secret sources that her administration intended to kill off the gun lobby. Unfortunately the gun lobby won the election via Putin’s puttana, Donny Trump. Getting rid of guns would have been a great legacy for Hillary and the gaystaking responsibility for everyone else who has access to guns.
Pride is every colour of the rainbow and more. It’s become shades of everything. And if you ever catch yourself saying that Pride is becoming too commercial remember the resonances it has, and not just for one community. It has to get bigger and bigger to kill off the recently legitimised hatred by the global economic superpowers We have to be the first community to throw a stiletto when we see anyone else being thrown head-first into a meat wagon We all have to be that sole lesbian who has taken enough and looks to us all for support And we all have to follow because, even though it may look like Pride marches have taken over the world, we have only become larger because of the growing forces of opposition to global democracies. So, stand tall, be safe and take pride in all you have become.
“Pride is every colour of the rainbow and more. It’s become shades of everything. And if you ever catch yourself saying that Pride is becoming too commercial remember the resonances it has, and not just for one community”

WELL, HELLO THERE!
) Right. I've been entrusted with a column. This seems grown up and responsible. But I'm writing it. So perhaps not quite so grown up and responsible. Once I knew this was going to be happening, there were questions I needed to ask myself. What would the column be about? How do I present myself? Will it be personal? I've answered these questions as follows... Stuff. Laid back. Kinda.
I'll clarify things. I'm Jon, Brighton born and bred and a member of Brighton Gay Men's Chorus. Not that that has anything to do with the column but I thought it best to present my 'Gay Society Credentials'. I've been writing stuff since I was 16 and have been doing creative things since first choreographing some dance routines for a group of five-yearolds in a church hall in Balfour Road Like you do I write stuff for the Chorus and things for my blog
I'm writing this in a mildly trendy coffee shop in Hove. I know it's trendy because there are filament bulbs in the window and I can see three laptops open in front of people working away as they sip their moccafrappowhatsits There's some ladies who lunch tucking into something sourdoughy There's parsley sprinkled on their fried eggs It's that sort of place I have a pot of tea And normal tea mind None of this 'infusion' nonsense I've seen tea that had beetroot in it How we've reached the point where drinking hot beetroot juice is a thing I'm not sure. I've treated myself to a piece of cake. This is the sort of typical 'Life on the Edge' behaviour you can expect from me.
So, what to scribble about? There's Pride obviously I didn't do the park last year There's only so much standing around with a plastic beer glass you can do. Am doing the park this year cause, well, Kylie. I'm hoping for a modern take on her classic Word Is Out but suspect I'm in a minority there. There's the usual hoo hah about Pride: “It's too corporate”; “Why aren't certain corporations supporting it?”; “It's not the same ” ; “It's all the same ” ; “It's too commercialised” and so on.
I'm kinda relaxed about the whole thing. As a Chorus we have a float in the parade which is the best part of the day, then a mooch about the park, check the cabaret tent, head home. With beer and food. The Sunday is a chilled day chatting with mates outside pubs. And that's Pride for me. I don't take it too seriously, which is fine. Some take it very seriously, which is fine too.
“Pride is just another thing to make money from... shops don’t give money from Father’s Day products to Fathers For Justice, or from Mother’s Day to Refuge”
I've seen lots of merchandise about with shops putting rainbows on everything There's some criticism that the shops don't donate a part of money they make off such things to LGBT+ charities This, to me, kind of means we've made it Pride is just another thing to make money from The same shops don't give money from Father’s Day products to Fathers For Justice, or from Mother’s Day to Refuge, or to the Samaritans from Christmas paraphernalia Merch drives visibility and acceptance too I know there's other arguments about it all but that's my vaguely political point Being vaguely political isn't something I do particularly I'm just a bit vague.
So, just to confirm things, this is a column about not much, written by a single guy who's currently out of work, who deals with anxiety and depression and writes whatever pops into his head That's how rip roaringly exciting things will get. You have been vaguely warned. Teapotscoffeeshops weebly com

CUPS FOR EVERYONE
) “We want cups too! Where's our cups!”
The boyfriend and one of the lesbians are having a heated conversation. With me, or rather with themselves, as I'm not getting a word in queerways, and besides, by now I've learned there's not much point. They're Aries, these people get passionate, it's best to let them run their course. And of course we've all had plenty to drink (from aforementioned cups) and opinions are plentiful.
“That's what you should write about!” They say. Or rather instruct. Aries, as I mentioned
The cups in question were free at London Pride, sporting a.o the nonbinary flag and the pansexual flag and the asexual flag. I'm all for this, as avid readers know I always like to say that we're all family.
“Besides”, I say to them, “It's not about us anymore. The lesbians, bi's and gays are yesterday’s pink news. It's about the kids now, and that's what they're about.”
They decidedly disagree, although the boyfriend does like to point out that I've bagged myself a hot toy boy, what with him being five years younger. I don't argue. At least not about that.”
“You know you don't always have to go along with everything and everyone ” He says the next day
“But that's my opinion.” I say.
“Yes but maybe you should write about other opinions too.”
He may have a point I do truly and deeply believe in live and let live You want to be a Pan-Panda? Better than an angry Grizzly I say You want to be a puppy in the parade? Why not, as long as you're a good boy and don't bite or pee everywhere. But what is Pride and who's it for today? To showcase or fight for rights? To make impact in the UK or around the world? None of these questions have easy answers.
“Pride is about sexual orientation, not sexual preferences,” my lesbian says. I would struggle very much to exclude someone from our parade, unless they're being outwardly hostile or offensive. But where's the line? Offensive is a tricky concept these days. And is it really about the kids?
As a teacher I like to think I have an insight. I know that most of them know Stonewall from posters around school that say 'Some people are gay'. They know Pride as a party. They came out to celebrate, and they come out to celebrate. Or do they know what Stonewall means?
I didn't until my 30s. I was minus 10 when it happened. Twenty years after Stonewall I knew I was gay, without knowing what gay was. Thirty years after I went to a gay bar for the first time. Unlike the patrons at that bar so long ago, I had nothing to fear but a whole life ahead of me that I didn't yet understand. And I had never been so afraid Still, because of that one bar, so long ago, we don't have to be quite as afraid
Oh, you decide yourself if the kids need reminding or not.
SAM TRANS MAN
In my own skin. Dr Samuel Hall on gaining a sense of pride, and being the best ‘me’.
) It’s Pride month! You can feel the hope rising in Brighton and beyond Lots of smaller Prides have already happened or are happening over the next few weekends London Pride just came and went I was up in London, but not for Pride - I’ve never been Having lived most of my life in Straightland, I’m a relative newcomer to the LGBTQ scene, and am still struggling to embody pride.
I was at a straight wedding My cousin married his girlfriend and it was a great day I think it was one of the first family occasions I’ve been to since I started transitioning at which I have felt truly comfortable. In my own skin. Certainly the first since I have almost finished my bottom surgery. That’s trans code for genital affirming surgery, which you know and I know is gruelling, and never undertaken lightly. Those of us who do it, do it because we need to To feel alright about ourselves I mean it’s pretty strange if you think about it; no-one knows what’s in my under-pants at a family wedding, and nor do they need to, but I do, and I swear the reason I felt so comfortable at my cousin’s wedding this weekend is because I have a penis I can’t really fathom this, but it’s made me think about pride in some depth.
A few months back I wrote about shame A difficult concept, but important for us all to grasp It’s a hot topic in psychosociological discourse. How much shame we all carry, and what a massive burden it is. In Carolyn Spring’s very brave autobiography Unshame, she talks about pride being the polar opposite of shame. She chronicles her journey through psychotherapy over many years whilst dealing with the trauma of childhood abuse, learning to love herself and all the damaged and traumatised parts of that same self She comes to terms with her brokenness, as we all must, and calls the process ‘unshaming’ because we
have to do this bit of work before we can get to ‘pride’ We can’t skip over this work of learning to love ourselves, keeping ourselves emotionally safe, and stopping leaking out our own self-hatred into our homes and all over our loved ones. We have to dig around in our pasts to understand where this self-hatred comes from, because shame makes us hang our heads, metaphorically speaking, and prevents us from being the best we can be.
Learning to love myself, be kind to myself, and follow my own path whilst avoiding causing pain to others, this is the stuff of growing up. Of adulting my way to wisdom. The surgery I needed to have has left me scarred, and being trans constantly eats away at my self-esteem I have to check myself all the time to turn off the stuck record in my head that says I am not good enough Because that leads me to hate myself, and sabotage my own happiness
The things I struggle not to hate about myself are that I’m trans, and I’m autistic, and it’s out of this self-hatred that I have and continue to hurt those around me Working on self-acceptance is the first step to self-love, so coming out as trans, being open about my mental health issues, and accepting my autism are all part of the journey leading to pride, which is the fruit of self-love. Selfishness in this setting is crucial. I can’t give love to others from an empty tank. It’s not narcissistic to look after myself so that I can become the best me. Surely it is incumbent upon us all to do this?
It seems to me it’s only when we leave our shame behind and walk with our heads held high, that we will be able to stop hurting one another on any scale, whether it be civil war, a household row, or a punch-up on a Friday night It’s only pride that allows us to let others be, and be themselves, without judgement
Sadly this year, when I’m just truly starting to embody pride for the first time, I’m not going to be in town for either TransPride or Pride It’s just a coincidence, but there are other commitments in the diary, a friend’s 50th birthday, a family holiday booked a year ago, that have to take precedent. I’m not as upset as I thought I’d be about missing out on Kylie. I’m really looking forward to the things I am doing instead, I really thought I’d be feeling gutted. A bit like at my cousin’s wedding, I’m looking forward to being around family and friends, in Straightland, and feeling totally comfortable about myself Who I am In my own skin A lovely feeling that I assume other people have without realising, and which has only come as a result of my surgery Maybe it’s noticeable to others; maybe I’m a more relaxed, nicer person to be around, now that I don’t have this over-whelming sense of ‘ wrongness ’ . Maybe this is pride.
And maybe, just maybe, I’m not quite ready to display my pride in the parade, or on the back of a lorry just now, in 2019. Maybe I need some time to live this new reality, this sense of self-respect that has eluded me for so much of my life. Maybe I need a year away from TransPride so that I can dig out more of the rot that is shame. I don’t want to carry a burden of ‘ wrongness ’ around for the rest of my life. The whole point of transitioning was to heal my shame, which is ancient, and passed down from my forebears I started this mammoth undertaking 10 years ago, and I’m almost done in terms of medical interventions But the consequences for me in psychological terms, they are only just beginning, and it feels like a wellspring of pride is coming
Happy Pride, readers, whatever you ’ re doing, and remember, love starts in the mirror
“Coming out as trans, being open about my mental health issues, and accepting my autism are all par t of the jour ney leading to pride”
