Hi-Hills Celebrates Friendly Competition

Each week at Hi-Hills, we add a unique twist to our favorite activities with a different theme. The week six sportsmanship theme is a special one because it coincides with a camp-wide Leagues competition.
Thursday, campers competed in the Hi-Hills “Mini-Olympics,” and Friday was the “Counselor Swim Relay Race.” Campers loved watching their counselors compete, and they did a great job cheering for the staff.
Note from Camp Director
In honor of sportsmanship week, we expanded our regular Leagues program with several special events. Instead of the usual Leagues teams, the whole camp split up into Team Peapack and Team Gladstone. On Tuesday, campers competed in an athletics tournament involving a mash up of their favorite Leagues games. Wednesday was the “Pasta Hunt” and the “penny-diving” competition at the pool. On
Although the winning team in each event scored points, teams also earned points for practicing good sportsmanship.

Also this week was the premiere of the Hi-Hills production of The Wizard of Oz. Directors Johnny and Stefanie, along with choreographer Diana, did a great job. Our young actors and actresses amazed the whole camp with their performance.

Hello Hi-Hills!
Dear Hi-Hills,
There’s only word to describe week six at Hi-Hills: amazing! Monday morning started off with energy and excitement as campers began their fun-filled week. Some kids came for the expository writing clinic, Singapore Math Review or science camp. Others were interested in sewing classes, basketball or our traditional camp activities. Whether campers stayed on for the full or half-day schedule, everyone had a blast. Hi-Hills celebrated sportsmanship this week, and the Peapack Penguins and the Gladstone Gladiators faced off in many great events. Congratualtions to the Gladstone Gladiators for their win! Campers gave it their best effort while also showing respect to the opposing team. One of the things that we love most about Hi-Hills is our flexibility–campers really can do it all. Not only can they compete in athletic activities, but they can also take part in artistic and educational activities as well. For example, many of our campers rehearsed for Friday’s production of The Wizard of Oz during their breaks from sportsmanship week events. And speaking of the camp play, it was quite the performance! From the set design and costumes to the singing and acting, it was truly a spectacle. Thank you to the parents who were able to attend the show and support our campers. Bunk 1: Miss Kathleen’s and Miss Monica’s F ishies Peyton did a great job designing her tile in art. Logan painted his pottery pieces and was excited to see how his creations turned out. Avery was so proud of his performance in dance. Brooke took over in athletics–she jumped through hoops and took on the obstacle course like a natural. Fiona showed off her strong kicks and punches in martial arts. Ellie was so excited to cook little hot dogs and then was delighted when we told her she could eat them. Gabriella was a star in the water–she was new to camp this week and she jumped right in. We are so proud of all of the children!
Bunk 2: Miss Stefanie’s and Miss Erin’s Leopards The Leopards continued to have a blast this week at camp. Finn and Brendan collected many pennies from the bottom of the pool during the “penny-diving” competition. Angela, Ariana and Alex enjoyed playing with a parachute on the rainy day. Caleb and Neil personalized their tiles with handprints during arts and crafts. Anthony and Daniel glazed their pottery pieces like expert artists. Barrett and Charlotte prepared their “pigs in a blanket” with precision and speed during in Cooking Club. Zach and Annabelle raced through the athletics obstacle course like champions. Thanks to all the families who came to Family Fun Night and made the evening such a success!
Bunk Upda tes Bunk 9: T igersharks This was a great week for Bunk 9–sportsmanship week is always a favorite. The kids were separated into two teams: the Peapack Penguins and the Gladstone Gladiators. The kids loved taking part in all the special activities. This year the campers’ favorite event was the “Pasta Hunt,” where all of the kids searched the athletic field for colored pasta pieces in order to score points for their teams. -Matt and Pat
Bunk 10: T he Rockin’ Chatterboxes It’s week six already and we can’t believe how quickly camp has flown by. The girls are having so much fun; nature is their very favorite activity. They enjoyed walking in the stream, catching fish and feeding the goats with Mr. Nature. Another one of their favorite activities was pottery. This week they glazed and fired their pieces, which are almost ready to take home! -Beryl and Emily
Bunk 11: T he Grumpy Giants The Grumpy Giants showed real sportsmanship this week. Mathias put in a great performance during the Hi-Hills “MiniOlympics.” Tyler R. showed us all how to do some cool yoga poses, and Tyler T. caught his first fish of the summer–he’s really gunning for that fishing badge! Phillip, as always, is doing a great job in “Gaga” Club. He’s even been putting on a clinic. We’re both very proud of Jake for passing the deep end test. -Taylor and Paul
Bunk Upda tes Bunk 12: Beautiful Brave Butterflies Bunk 12 made a bunch of amazing memories this week! We all enjoyed sportsmanship week. Caitlin and Amanda did a fantastic job supporting the Peapack Penguins. Anna and Anjola represented the Gladstone Gladiators with pride. We thoroughly enjoyed watching the girls compete in all the fun activities. Their favorites were the Pictionary competition during in art, the “Pasta Hunt” and the “penny-diving” competition in the pool. We are looking forward to our bunk skit and our pajama party in week seven. -Jen and Jamie
Bunk 13: T he Fantastic Fury Bunk 13’s summer fun continued with sportsmanship week. Campers enjoyed splitting up into the Gladstone Gladiators and the Peapack Penguins. They participated in exciting activities like the “Mini-Olympics” and the “penny-diving” competition. We also had fun using green screens to make funny movies with Black Rocket. We’re all looking forward to making the most of the next two weeks. -Ben and Cory
Bunk 14: T he Sugar Rush There was so much spirit in the bunk this week! Sportsmanship week was a blast, especially the friendly rivalry between the Peapack Penguins and the Gladstone Gladiators. Aside from the competitions going on, our girls loved spending time in the stream during nature. We also had a great time during pottery with Brian. We have some very creative and talented girls in our bunk. -Nancy and Megan
Bunk Upda tes Bunk 17: T he Chicken F ingers Bunk 17 had a fantastic time during sportsmanship week! We enjoyed competing against each other in many activities and we always remembered to be great sports. During the annual “Pasta Hunt,” Timmy led the Gladstone Gladiators to victory when he found the purple pasta! Timmy, Mitch and Josh participated in the camp play, The Wizard of Oz. The play was a great success! We can’t wait for next week, and we hope that all parents can attend parent luncheon on Thursday, August 8. -RJ and Mike
Bunk 18: Powerpuff Girls We are two weeks away from the end of summer camp and we still have so many great things planned. This was sportsmanship week, and the girls were excited to win points for their teams. The Gladstone Gladiators found the purple pasta and the Peapack Penguins collected points during some of the other athletic events. The girls are also excited for Leagues playoffs next week. Program News Pottery
The studio has really come alive this week. Campers made great clay sculptures including snakes, turtles, tennis balls, baseballs, decorative tiles and pinch pots. In the coming weeks we will focus on learning glazing and underglazing techniques. With summer coming to a close, we’re getting our projects wrapped up and ready to take home. -Brian
Dance
This week in dance I encouraged the kids to control the way they moved their bodies around space on the dance floor. Different bunks competed for points in a competition where they were encouraged to choreograph their own dance moves and work together to create an original routine. We danced to popular songs and incorporated Latin music and dance steps. Kinder Camp danced to different children’s songs, and we worked on developing hand-eye coordination and improving rhythmic awareness. -Diana
Program News Fishing
The stormy weather prevented Bunk 12 from going fishing on Thursday, but they have been rescheduled for August 8, along with Bunk 14. The girls showed great understanding, and they’re excited for next week. Bunk 11 completed their fishing trip on Wednesday of this week, and had a grand old time–they didn’t want to leave the lake! Bunk 13 will make their fishing trip next Tuesday. Make sure you get your permission slips in to the main office!

Tennis and Yoga
I was inspired by both the quality and the quantity of sportsmanship demonstrated this week by the Peapack Penguins and the Gladstone Gladiators. The terrific spirit and fantastic weather resulted in splendid tennis. I was amazed by the prodigious skill of Kinder Camp as well as our talented CITs. This week included the games of “attack and defend,” “shark imposter,” “jail” and more. In yoga, we practiced the Volcano, the Clamshell, the Hiding Snake and the Turtle. We continued to master the partner poses.

Nature
This week, the children competed in a plastic lizard scavenger hunt in the stream to win points for their sportsmanship week teams. Nature Club also continued this week. Campers loved meeting all the interesting critters we have here on campus such as goats, rabbits, snakes and more. -Mr. Nature
Program News Arts and Crafts
This week in arts and crafts we celebrated the spirit of sportsmanship week by competing in a Pictionary competition. Kinder Camp created some beautifully decorated tiles. Also this week was the premiere of The Wizard of Oz. I’m so proud of all the hard work the campers put in throughout the summer to make the play such a success. Looking forward to next week! -Johnny
Music
This week in music, each bunk competed in a sing-off competition. To encourage good sportsmanship, each team scored the other. When Team Peapack sang, Team Gladstone scored their performance using a point system, and vice versa. I was also excited for the premiere of The Wizard of Oz on Friday. All the kids worked so hard and it was an awesome show! This was my last week, so stay fabulous and I’ll see you all next summer! -Stefanie
Martial Arts
This sportsmanship week, the kids had an amazing time with a high kicking game. Campers lined up and attempted to kick a target using either a front snap kick or a high rising kick. As the game progressed we raised the target higher and higher, challenging campers to jump and stretch as high as possible. Bunk 18 was especially impressive–a number of campers came just a few feet short of hitting the ceiling! This week really tested the campers on the techniques and skills they have learned so far this summer. -Ben

Classic Grilled Cheese 2 pieces thick-cut white bread 1 slice American cheese 1 slice Muenster cheese Whipped butter 1. Lightly butter one side of each piece of bread 2. Assemble sandwich with the buttered side facing out 3. Place sandwich in frying pan and cover with lid 4. Cook for 2-3 minutes per side, or until cheese is melted and bread is crispy and golden on outside
Greetings from Kinder Camp We divided Kinder Camp into two teams for sportsmanship week: the Super Sea Lions and the Blue Sea Monkeys. They had fun competing against each other in many activities. Our Family Fun Night on Wednesday was a great success–parents and children took an evening swim and then enjoyed lemonade and cookies. The HiHills play, The Wizard of Oz, premiered on Friday and the children played the part of the “Munchkins.” In Cooking Club we made “pigs in a blanket” which were a big hit!
Athletics kept on going throughout sportsmanship week with awesome games of “Moneyball.” Campers had a great time earning points for Team Peapack and Team Gladstone. We’re looking forward to playing games of “Steal the Bacon” and “Sideline Soccer” next week. Next week is Leagues playoffs! The Parmesans will take on Team Duck while the #Pandas will compete against the Orangutans. The Jellybeans will take on the Destroyers and the Mummies will take on the Elephants. -Marc and John

Teen Travel
This week in Teen Travel we took a trip out to Tannersville, PA to spend the day at Camelbeach Mountain Waterpark. It was a great way to enjoy the beautiful weather on Tuesday. This Wednesday, we ventured into the city to catch a Broadway show: The Phantom of the Opera! On Thursday we relaxed with a few games of bowling before hanging out at camp Friday for the close of sportsmanship week. -Jim
