A NOTE FROM THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

Moving Forward…. We’re all very proud of the collective athletic success achieved by our program over the last several years. Our teams are achieving at unprecedented levels and our student-athletes have been justifiably recognized for their talents and achievements. We’ve established Gill St. Bernard’s as a “destination school” for high-level student-athletes, while colleges and universities across the country now have GSB alumni making significant contributions to their athletic programs. This success brings with it not only the responsibility to continue to provide a positive athletic experience, but it also requires us to avoid the temptation to “rest on the laurels” of our recent performance. Any successful program is constantly evolving and actively searching for ways to improve. We owe that to our current student-athletes as well as to the Knights of the future, whose experience here will be even more prolific than that of their predecessors. With that in mind, in the midst of this unparalleled period of athletic success, we’ve made several tangible improvements over the past year in an effort to move our program forward, including:

New Coaches to Lead Upper School Girls’ Soccer The GSB athletics program proudly welcomes Michael Williams as head coach to the 2013 varsity girls’ soccer team. Williams currently serves as the regional coaching director of Maestro Soccer Academy as well as head trainer for the Maestro F.C. program. In addition to his experiences as a former head coach at Immaculata in Somerville, N.J. and Massey High School in New Zealand, Williams also guided the U13 club soccer team, the Stronghold SC Phoenix Red, to the 2013 New Jersey State Cup this spring. Prior to coaching young women of all ages, Williams played for one year as a member of the Football Kingz (later renamed the Wellington Phoenix), New Zealand’s only professional soccer team to compete in the Australian National Soccer League. Williams also played Division I soccer at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University before eventually graduating from Unitec New Zealand with a bachelor’s degree in sports management. Joining Williams on the sidelines this season will be assistant varsity girls’ soccer coach Donna Bednarsky P ’08, ’10, ’14, ’17. A longtime GSB faculty member, Bednarsky’s everyday responsibilities range from teaching physical education classes to working as a liaison for the Knights Athletic Booster Club. Throughout her tenure as former head coach of Gill’s varsity girls’ soccer program (1994-99), Bednarsky accumulated more than 100 career wins and three Prep B Championships. She also holds more than 20 years of coaching experience at the club level, and played Division I soccer for four years with the University of Connecticut. While at UConn, Bednarsky was All-American and received an invitation to participate in the United States Olympic Festival. Adam Sparrey rounds-out the girls’ soccer staff as junior varsity coach. Sparrey has extensive experience coaching at the club level and holds a UEFA—the governing body of football in Europe—‘A’ license as well as the National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s premier diploma. He earned a B.A. from the University of Gloucestershire in England and is the author of several soccer training curricula.

Recognizing Excellence in Three-Sport Athletes Four student-athletes earned special distinction during a senior luncheon and awards ceremony in the Athletic Center on May 31. Recognized for their active participation in three sports across each season throughout all four years of high school were Nicholas Blackman, Emily Iannaconi, Emily Quinn and Brian Steck. The athletic department would like to extend a formal thank you to the 2013 group of honorees, whose steadfast dedication and commitment to the success of Gill St. Bernard’s School has led to excellence both in the classroom and on the playing field.

Booster Club Committee Members Retire The GSB Booster Club is pleased to announce the addition of two new executive committee members—Tara Kramer P ’16 and Kelly Sturman P ’21, ’22—for the 2013-14 athletic year. Before welcoming its newest group of appointees (coming this fall to the Booster Club Newsletter), the school bids farewell to two retiring committee members whose steadfast leadership and commitment to the athletics program will be dearly missed: Gill St. Bernard’s honors the dedication and commitment displayed by Amanda Wentworth-Ping P ’13 who, this spring, retired from the GSB Athletic Booster Club after seven years of service on the executive board. Wentworth-Ping’s longstanding relationship with the Knights began in 2005 when her son, Campbell ’13, first enrolled in Gill St. Bernard’s School. A Middle School team parent with the 5/6 boys’ soccer program that same year, Wentworth-Ping’s growing interest in athletics soon led her to become a Middle School team parent coordinator the following fall. In addition to fulfilling this role over the next three years, Wentworth-Ping was appointed treasurer of the Athletic Booster Club in 2007. Following her son’s transition to the Upper School, Wentworth-Ping continued for another two years as Booster Club treasurer as well as Upper School team parent coordinator. In 2011, she assumed the position of vice president of the Booster Club, with key responsibilities including overseeing Homecoming/Family Day and the Knights Café, and initiating both involvement and interest in the overall athletics program at GSB. “Aside from offering support for Upper School student-athletes, the Booster Club also works to promote Middle School athletics and to spread school spirit which, essentially, stems from the Lower School level,” said Wentworth-Ping, who also served on the executive board’s spirit committee until 2010. In addition to her many contributions as a member of the Athletic Booster Club, Wentworth-Ping has served Gill St. Bernard’s School 2012-13 Athletic with the Parents-Admission Network (PAN), and on Booster Club Executive Committee the Parents’ Association’s executive and Silent Auction committees. Linda Osterman P ’13 retired from the Athletic Booster Club’s executive committee this spring, after two years of devoted service to the organization. A longtime sports aficionado, Osterman’s participation in the GSB athletics program began just two years after enrolling her son Ryan ’13 as a freshman at the school. The proud mother of a four-year soccer and tennis player, Osterman quickly sought additional opportunities to support the athletics program at GSB and was appointed Upper School team parent coordinator in 2011. “Whether active in athletics, academics or the arts, a parent’s involvement shows each child just how important he or she truly is,” said Osterman, who also chaired Homecoming/Family Day (2010-11), acted as class parent to the Class of 2013 (2010-12) and participated in the Parents-Admission Network, also known as PAN, (2010-13) throughout her son’s Upper School tenure. Osterman, with a B.A. in urban studies from Lehigh University, returned to the workforce in 2012 after 15 years spent raising her two children. Aside from her current role as a mortgage loan consultant at the Peapack-Gladstone Bank, Osterman has also served nine years as president of the Tewksbury Education Foundation—an organization with which she has been director since 2000.

Varsity Baseball Earns Fourth Straight Winning Season The Knights opened the season, defeating Pingry School 4-3 behind a stellar performance from pitcher Daniel Spear ’15 who scattered seven hits and struck out eight. This was followed by a 5-3 comeback victory on April 3, when Gill used a two-run double from Wesley Spear ’13 as well as hits from D. Spear, Nicholas Blackman ’13, Luke Beveridge ’15 and Brendan Dougher ’14 to defeat Belvidere. Pitcher Peter Carollo ’13 also struck out five in the first start of his varsity career. Blackman (4-for-5) and D. Spear (3-for-4) next hit three RBIs apiece to capture a 14-9 win over Bound Brook on April 5. Also making valuable contributions to bring the Knights to 3-0 were Mark Leonhard ’13 with two hits and Matthew Amoroso ’13 who had three hits and earned his first varsity pitching win with three innings of relief. Robert Berman ’15 also pitched three innings in relief to defeat North Plainfield on April 8. Meanwhile, James Raia ’16, Leonhard, Beveridge and W. Spear had two hits apiece, and Daniel Sivolella ’16 went 3-for-3 with three scored runs in a 20-10 victory over Manville on April 11. Shortly after sustaining back-to-back losses, the boys defeated South Hunterdon High School 12-2 on April 17. Sivolella went 3-for-5 with two doubles, Matthew Taylor ’16 had two hits and two RBIs, Raia scored twice, and Berman scattered three hits over five innings. Blackman pitched a complete game four-hitter to open the SCT in late April. Contributing two hits, two RBIs apiece in the 15-3 victory over Manville were D. Spear, Leonhard, Beveridge and Berman. Despite falling to Hillsborough in round two of the SCT, the Knights quickly bounced back with a win over North Plainfield on April 30. This 6-4 win at TD Bank Ballpark marked the 200th career victory for Head Varsity Baseball Coach David Pasquale. GSB improved its record May 4 when it triumphed 8-1 over Oratory Prep. Clarke Mehmel ’14 scattered three hits, letting up just one unearned run for his first varsity win. Blackman went 3-for-4 with a RBI double, and both Leonhard and Amoroso had two hits, two runs and two stolen bases. Berman pitched the Knights to a 7-4 win over Manville High School on May 7. Beveridge and W. Spear combined for four hits and four RBIs, while Dougher and Taylor added two hits apiece. Recovering from a loss to Pennington in the NJISAA Prep B quarterfinals, Gill used three runs in the fifth inning against South Hunterdon High School to secure its 12th victory on May 13. Berman threw a complete game three-hitter in the triumph. The boys improved their record to 13-12 with a 5-3 win over Morristown-Beard on May 20. Blackman laced a two-run double in the seventh inning to give GSB the lead, and Taylor (2-for-3) hit a RBI single to help defeat the Crimson. Also contributing to the victory was Craig Pilla ’14 with a two-run single, and D. Spear who went 2-for-3 and pitched two scoreless innings in relief of Carollo. Next up for the Knights was a come-from-behind victory (4-3) over Bishop George Ahr High School. Trailing 3-2 at the start of the seventh, D. Spear led off with his second double of the day, advanced to third on a single by Amoroso and scored on a sacrifice fly by Leonhard. Beveridge (3-for-3) later hit a RBI single to seal the win. The season closed with a loss to Sacred Heart High School in the first round of the NJSIAA State Tournament. Down by three in the fifth inning, the Knights scored two runs on a triple from Pilla to bring the score to 3-2. Although Blackman, Beveridge and Raia each reached base and Taylor hit a two-run single in the sixth inning to take the lead, Sacred Heart rallied with two runs of its own in the seventh. Alexander Bauer ’14 and Ryan McCluskey ’14 also made valuable contributions, as the Knights finished with an overall record of 14-13.

JV Baseball Celebrates Victory Gill’s JV baseball team had a strong season, which included wins over Rutgers Prep and Oratory. Clarke Mehmel ’14 threw a complete game two-hitter to lead the Knights in the 1-0 triumph over Rutgers Prep on April 18. Also sealing the victory was leadoff hitter James Grant ’16, who singled and scored on a sacrifice fly in the first inning. Grant led his team in both walks and runs throughout the season as well. In the 8-4 win over Oratory Prep, leading hitters included Alexander Bauer ’14 and Ryan McCluskey ’14, also key contributors in hits, doubles and RBIs this spring. The GSB pitching staff limited Oratory to two earned runs and struck out 12, while crucial plays were also made by infielders Ryan Chestnutt ’16 at shortstop, Andrew Noll ’16 at third and Aniello “Neil” Ianniello ’16 at first base. Patrolling the outfield were Nathaniel Benoit ’16, Eric White ’15, Tyler Kwaak ’16 and Carter Silvey ’16, the latter of which also played second base and had the highest batting average on the season. Middle School Baseball Makes Mid-Year Comeback Gill’s Middle School baseball team rallied for four straight wins to close the season on a high note. The boys posted a 16-3 triumph over the St. Joseph School of Mendham on April 30. Pitcher Troy Pilla ’17 earned his first win of the year, while all other players reached base and scored at least one run. Perhaps the most exciting moment of the spring was Gill’s victory over St. James of Basking Ridge (11-10) on May 2. Down 10-4, Steven Bednarsky ’17 led off the last inning with a double as the Knights batted around to win the game in eventual walk-off fashion. Bednarsky sealed the victory with a single, his second hit of the inning. Other highlights of the season included a 12-1 trouncing of Morristown-Beard, where pitcher Evan Druskin ’17 threw a one-hitter and was a double away from hitting for the cycle. This spring, Druskin led the Knights in extra base hits and pitching victories, and Cameron Gateman ’17 led the pitching staff in strikeouts and the defense in putouts. Catcher Anthony Lake ’18 also went 14 straight innings without allowing a passed ball in games against Pingry and Newark Academy, while Ryan Fucci ’17 led his team at bat.

Varsity Golf Swings for Success Gill’s varsity golf team (10-7) saw much success on the course this season, earning its third Skyland Conference division championship since 2010 and placing third at the NJISAA Prep B Championships in mid-May. The Knights began the season with a five-match winning streak over Hillsborough, Belvidere, South Hunterdon, Bernards and Hopatcong. Leading his team to the victory (221-224) over Hillsborough was John William Murphy ’13 who claimed medalist honors with a 39. He was backed by Nicholas Baker ’13 and Cole Moriarty ’14 with a 44, and by Carson Ingersoll ’13 and Peter Stone ’13 who shot a 43 and 49, respectively. Belvidere and South Hunterdon at a tri match on April 3. While it was Moriarty who scored the match-best 39, Baker (42), Murphy (43), Garret Hill ’14 (47) and Blake Jenkins ’13 (48) also contributed solid scores to seal the win on the par-35 Fox Hollow Country Club course. Following wins over Belvidere and Hopatcong on April 8, complete with medalist honors by Murphy (39), the boys sustained their first loss of the season in a match against Delbarton (216-205). Baker (38), Moriarty (40) and Murphy (42) posted three of the top-five scores in the upset, giving their team the confidence it needed to quickly bounce back with a triumph over Rutgers Prep on April 11. Murphy and Baker spearheaded the 229-258 victory at Trump National Golf Club, scoring a 40 and 41, respectively. Shortly after placing seventh overall at the Somerset County Championships, which also included a 10th place individual finish by Baker, GSB continued the regular season with a tri match against Princeton Day School (PDS) and Pingry. Despite falling by six strokes to Pingry, the Knights defeated PDS (218-231) and improved to 7-2. Murphy tied for medalist honors with a 37. Rounding-out the scoring for the Knights were Baker with a 41, Jenkins with a 46, and both Moriarty and Ingersoll with a 47. GSB next traveled to Apple Mountain Golf Course, where Baker (37), Stone (43), Ingersoll (44), Gunnar Valentine ’15 (45), Garrett Rowe ’15 (47) and Jack Lowe ’15 (49) combined for a 216-282 win over Belvidere. Baker once again led the team and received medalist honors (38) in a match against Bernards on April 23. After

earning a win over South Hunterdon on April 26 behind Campbell Wentworth-Ping ’13 (41), the Knights fell to a series of tough opponents from Delaware Valley Regional, Ridge, Pingry and Morristown-Beard in the weeks that followed. The postseason began May 14 with the NJSIAA State Tournament and continued May 15 at the Skyland Conference Championships. Leading the team to its third Skyland Conference Tournament crown since 2010 was Murphy who earned first place medalist honors with a 76 on the 18-hole Royce Kyle Swartz ’13. Brook Country Club course. Baker (78) finished second, Moriarty (88) placed sixth and Ingersoll (97) took ninth. GSB closed its season with the Prep B Championships on May 16. Guiding the Knights to a third place overall finish was Wentworth-Ping, who tied for fifth in the field of 50. Also contributing to the successful season were Kyle Swartz ’13, Alexander Ferruggia ’14, Kenneth “Casey” Meyer ’15 and Nicolas Ricciardi ’16.

JV Golf Players Show Promise of Strong Future for Program The JV golf team earned its first win in nearly two seasons over Morristown-Beard on April 17 at the Fox Hollow Country Club in Branchburg, N.J.

Positive contributions were made throughout the spring by several returning players including, Alexander Ferruggia ’14, Garret Hill ’14, Jack Lowe ’15, Kenneth “Casey” Meyer ’15 and Gunnar Valentine ’15. Newcomers such as Nicolas Ricciardi ’16 and Garrett Rowe ’15 also showed significant improvement over the course of the season. Regardless of their expertise, all displayed supreme work ethic and continually practiced to perfect their game. These players will serve as key members to the varsity program in the years ahead. 6

JV Girls’ Lacrosse Celebrates Inaugural Season With Victories A club sport since 2011, the JV girls’ lacrosse team enjoyed its inaugural season of interscholastic competition. In the season-opening loss to North Warren on April 16, goalie Catarina “Caty” Matthews ’16 debuted with seven saves backed by strong defensive efforts from Alessandra “Allie” Haversat ’15, Raena Dell’Ermo ’14, Isabelle Demontigny ’15 and Nita Diverio ’15. Kensey Olsen ’14 also had three goals, while Kaila Gong ’15 and Sarah Fenton ’15 added one goal and one assist apiece. Gong had five goals, Treanor scored twice, and both Fenton and Samantha Kramer ’16 added one goal apiece to help the girls secure their first-ever win (9-7) over Blair Academy on April 30. Also contributing to the milestone victory was Haversat with three ground balls, and Matthews who made six crucial saves to keep the Blair offense at bay.

GSB also triumphed over Immaculata on May 13. Leading the girls to the 9-8 victory were Fenton with six goals, Kramer with two and Olsen who scored once. Both Fenton and Cricket Treanor ’14 also added two draw controls apiece while Olsen— with one draw control—joined Claire Jenkins ’14, Angelique Norwood ’16, Diverio and Alexa Hait ’16 for seven ground balls in the dramatic final win. A Look at the Middle School Lacrosse Program GSB’s Middle School boys’ lacrosse team concluded its season with back-to-back victories over Montclair Kimberley Academy and The Craig School. The Knights welcomed many new players this spring and demonstrated increased improvement with each passing practice and game. Eighth grade captains Will Dadouris and Charles Papandreou led their team with high levels of intensity and spirit on the field. Also shared by all was a mutual understanding of the value of teamwork, especially on defense, as evidenced by the season-ending shutout over The Craig School. In an effort to further enhance their skills during the offseason, two GSB Knights—Pierce Norwood ’18 and William Orazietti ’18—joined approximately 400 other players at the Army Lacrosse Camp in West Point, N.Y. this July. Norwood received recognition as the camp’s most improved player after completing two three-day sessions with the United States Military Academy. Each player from the Middle School girls’ lacrosse team used dedication and teamwork to progress her skills significantly as well as prepare for Gill’s new JV girls’ lacrosse program in the Upper School. Leading the attack for the Knights was Alyssa DiFazio ’17. Andree Aloise ’19 also played a strong game at midfield while Rachel Auslander ’18 led the girls on defense. Varsity Softball Team Has Grand Slam Season The varsity softball team posted an impressive 17-9 record this spring including its third consecutive trip to the Prep B championship game.

Brookman and Napolitano combined for six hits and seven runs. Donlin and Greenberg contributed three hits and two runs apiece in a 12-5 win over Ridge on April 19.

The 2013 season opened April 1 when Emma Corbett ’16 struck out 10 and scattered five hits to defeat Pingry School 4-3. Despite falling 9-8 to Belvidere on April 3, the girls quickly recovered with three straight wins over Bound Brook, Rutgers Prep and North Plainfield. Leading the Knights in the 15-5 rout of Bound Brook was Eliza Brookman ’15 with three hits and two RBIs. Paige Knichel ’15. Corbett also added two hits, two runs and two RBIs while Margaret “Meg” Donlin ’15, Cara Napolitano ’14, Caroline Roch ’14 and Kennedy Whitehead ’16 had one hit and two runs apiece. Amanda Greenberg ’13 connected for three hits and two runs behind Corbett who allowed only one hit and struck out eight in the 16-0 thrashing of Rutgers Prep on April 6. Corbett’s stellar performance continued April 8, as she threw a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts to shut out North Plainfield. Gordon and Donlin also scored two runs each in the 7-0 win.

Despite falling 6-2 to Montgomery High School in round two of the SCT on April 27, the Knights improved to 10-5 with a regular season victory (7-2) over North Plainfield. Corbett went 3-for-4 and Paige Knichel ’15 added two hits. On May 3, Whitehead laced a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth to clinch an exciting one-run win (5-4) over The Hun School of Princeton. The Knights also cruised to a 21-1 victory over Manville on May 7 when Corbett blasted two homers and Napolitano tripled twice.

Shortly after falling 6-2 to Mount St. Mary Academy on April 10, GSB followed with four consecutive wins over Manville, Bernards, South Hunterdon and Ridge. Greenberg led the girls with three hits and four runs in the 14-4 victory over Manville. Corbett threw a complete game four-hitter, Roch went 3-for-4 with two doubles and Napolitano scored twice in the 4-2 triumph at Bernards. The Knights then defeated South Hunterdon 15-6 on April 17 when Corbett,

The girls opened the NJISAA Prep B Tournament with a 9-2 win over Morristown-Beard School on May 9. Contributing to the quarterfinal victory was Napolitano with two hits, three RBIs, two runs and a two-run home run. Elizabeth “Sally” Gordon ’14 also added a run-scoring single for the Knights. Corbett tossed a four-hitter with five strikeouts to defeat the top-seed, Wardlaw-Hartridge School, 2-0 in the semifinals on May 14. Despite home runs from Knichel, Donlin and Whitehead, the team fell 13-7 to Newark Academy in the finals at Diamond Nation in Flemington, N.J., on May 16. GSB quickly recovered to begin the NJSIAA Non Public B State Tournament May 22 with a shutout over Benedictine Academy. Pitchers Corbett and Napolitano combined for a complete game one-hitter. Both also connected on two hits and two runs in the 10-0 victory. The Knights’ season ended May 29 with a tough loss (11-10) to Wardlaw-Hartridge in the Sectional quarterfinals. Haley Miller ’13, Jenna Steele ’15, Samantha Delehanty ’16 and Kaitlyn Moriarty ’16 also provided important contributions for the team, which will return several key players next year.

Meet the Middle School Softball Team This season’s Middle School softball team contained a strong group of returning eighth grade players, as well as promising seventh grade student-athletes. The girls finished 6-2-1 with wins over several tough opponents including Rutgers Prep and Newark Academy. Varsity Tennis Earns Back-to-Back Sectional Championships This spring’s varsity boys’ tennis team (9-8) won the NJSIAA Non Public B South Sectional Championship for the second straight season and finished runner-up within the Raritan Division of the Skyland Conference. The season opened with a 4-1 victory over North Hunterdon on April 2, and continued with a 3-2 triumph over Franklin High School on April 4. Key contributors to the win at Franklin were second doubles players William Conlan ’16 and Marc Orazietti ’16. Bryce Neville ’14, who won their three-set match 5-7, 6-1, 6-3. Also leading the Knights were Carlson Brown ’14 at first singles (6-4, 6-3), and Ryan Osterman ’13 with Kyle Williams ’14 at first doubles (6-2, 6-1). Despite falling to Morristown-Beard on April 5, GSB recovered with back-to-back wins over Rutgers Prep (3-2) and Voorhees (5-0) the following week. The boys defeated Rutgers Prep April 8 behind singles players Alexander “Alec” Rowe ’13 and Marc Orazietti ’16, along with the

first doubles squad of Osterman/Williams. Gill’s sweep of Voorhees on April 9 was followed by a second victory (4-1) over the Vikings on April 19, with fine performances demonstrated by all teammates including Harald Parker ’14 (6-1, 6-3) at third singles. Shortly after securing a 3-2 win over North Hunterdon High School on April 24, Rowe (second singles) as well as the first and second doubles squads of Osterman/Williams and Conlan/Neville, all advanced to the quarterfinal round of the SCT. Orazietti also earned one point at third singles to help lead the Knights to an overall eighth place team finish. Postseason play continued May 14, as GSB kicked off the NJSIAA State Tournament with a 5-0 victory over Ranney. The Knights returned to the Sectional finals with a 3-2 win over the top-seeded Moorestown Friends School. Points were earned by Brown (6-0, 6-2) and Rowe (6-3, 6-2), and by the first doubles squad of Osterman/Williams (6-2, 6-1). Meanwhile, leading the team to its second straight State Sectional Championship and the 3-2 win over Rutgers Prep on May 20 were Rowe (6-2, 6-2) and Orazietti (6-1, 6-4), as well as the second doubles squad of Osterman/Williams (6-2, 6-1). The season concluded May 22, with a loss to Newark Academy at the NJSIAA State finals in Mercer County Park.

Girls’ Tennis to Implement New Coaching Staff Sean Welcome has accepted a position as head varsity girls’ tennis coach for the fall 2013 season. New to the GSB coaching staff this spring, Welcome led the boys’ program to its second consecutive Sectional Championship. A former assistant coach at the nationally ranked College of New Jersey, Welcome is currently a teaching professional at the Park Lakes Tennis & Paddle Club in Mountain Lakes, N.J. Prior to coaching, Welcome played varsity tennis for four years at Newton High School and continued his athletic career with a Division I scholarship at Rider University in Lawrenceville, N.J. Welcome, with extensive experience coaching players of all levels, is extremely excited about joining the girls’ program. Working with Welcome as a member of the girls’ tennis staff will be Diane Becker, new coach to Gill’s junior varsity team. Becker was responsible for the JV boys’ team this past season and the Middle School girls’ team last fall. She holds over 40 years of experience as a tennis instructor, including stops at the Brooklake Indoor Tennis Center (present), Mendham Racquet Club and Roxiticus Country Club. Becker, a former singles player at Gettysburg College, is acting Peapack-Gladstone recreation director as well. Veteran coach Chris Walsh, who has been part of the tennis staff at GSB over the past four years, will return as varsity and JV assistant coach.

JV Boys’ Tennis Recap The JV boys’ tennis team enjoyed a near .500 season including impressive wins over Morristown-Beard, Rutgers Prep, Voorhees and Franklin.

GSB finished 6-7 overall behind first doubles partners Kiliaen O’Connor ’14 and Harald Parker ’14, as well as the second doubles squad of George Harris ’16 and Nicholas Ross ’16. Both Harris and Ross marked the only players to compete in every match this spring, and defeated more than half their opponents. Also posting winning records for the Knights were Ethan Brooks ’15, Ivor Guest ’15, Henry Holmes ’14, Ravi Malik ’16, Michael Petrilli ’15 and Michael Urowsky ’16. All will play a crucial role in maintaining the recent success of the varsity program.

Middle School Tennis Displays Sportsmanship The Middle School boys’ tennis team, despite its small size, was not without talent this spring as its players steadily improved with each passing practice and match. The boys’ roster included seventh graders Andrew Silverschotz, Charles Han, Noah Steinbaum, Christopher “CJ” Licata and Connor Kirk. The team faced numerous opponents including Rutgers Prep, which it tied during one of two matches this April. With each Knight having to play both singles and doubles matches in many contests, several complimented Gill’s sportsmanship, respect toward others and positive attitude on the court.

Gill’s 2013 varsity track and field team achieved much success and shattered several school records this spring. The season opened April 2 with an all-girls meet against Mount St. Mary Academy. Taking first in the discus (79’3”) and shot put (26’5”) was Armani Comick ’15, who also placed runner-up in both the long jump (13’10”) and javelin (62’0”). Other successful contributors included Amanda Leonhard ’16 with first in the 100 meter dash (13.2 seconds) and second in the 200m (28.5 seconds), as well as Ludi Zhu ’16 who took first in the long jump (13’11.5”) and third in the 100m (13.9 seconds) and 200m (29.5 seconds) runs. Leading the boys through their season opener on April 8 in North Plainfield was Thomas Troxell ’13, who set a new school record in the 400m hurdles (57.9 seconds) and joined Jacob Kruger ’15, Andrew Wible ’15 and Jordan Taylor ’14 for second in the 4x400 relay. Comick and Zhu earned top finishes in both the shot put (30’5”) and 100m (13.7 seconds) to once again lead the girls. Also placing first was the girls’ 4x400 relay squad of Emily Iannaconi ’13, Dana Klein ’14, Emily Quinn ’13 and Alexandria Benoit ’14.

Benoit and Sahara Ensley ’16 (5:50) secured top-two finishes in the 1600m run as well, while the girls rounded-out scoring with a fourth place 100m hurdle time of 22.2 seconds from Sabrina Kogut ’14. Patrik Andersen ’15 (3200m/10:41), Svetozar Brankov ’13 (800m/2:19) and Troxell (400m hurdles/1:03) finished first for the boys at an April 16 tri meet against Manville and Bound Brook. Key contributors for the girls included Comick with first in both the shot put (28’5.5”) and long jump (14’7”), as well as Ensley (12:09.0), Quinn (12:09.2) and Klein (12:10) who took first through third in the 3200m. Top finishes were also secured by Klein (5:18.2) and Quinn (5:18.5) in the 1600 meter and by Benoit (2:32.2) and Iannaconi (2:32.3) in the 800m run. Shortly after finishing sixth in the girls’ 4x400 at the Penn Relays, GSB medaled in three separate events and shattered several school records at the Randolph Relays on April 27. Ranked first within the small schools division, the boys placed third overall and were led by the distance medley relay squad of Brian Steck ’13, Troxell, Brankov and Andersen with a school record 10:47, as well as by the 4x800 relay squad of Troxell, Kruger, Michael Iannaconi ’16 and Wible which placed fifth (9:16) in the small schools division 10

The girls were second overall within their division and earned a fifth place record-breaking finish (12:26) in the distance medley relay as Klein, Iannaconi, Benoit and Quinn dropped one minute off the former record established in 2011. Comick, Zoe Quan-Shau ’16 and Colette Bilynsky ’16 also combined for 13th in the shot put (68’2”) and 14th in the javelin (169’8”), while Zhu took 18th individually in the long jump (13’2”). Klein secured her next school record (2:18) in the girls’ 800m during a regular season home meet held April 30 against South Hunterdon and Bernards. Also performing well for the girls’ squad were Zhu who won the long jump and Comick who took first in the shot put (29’1.5”), second in the discus (76’6”) and third in the long jump (14’0.25”). The boys were paced by Andrew Provines ’13, as he grabbed first in the discus (103”7’), and third in the shot put (32’5”) and javelin (100’0”). Michael Tafaro ’15 also captured first in the javelin (111’8”) and second in the shot put (34’5.5”). Other runner-up finishes were posted by Troxell (400m hurdles/59.1 seconds), Steck (1600m/4:46), Andersen (800m/2:05), Gregory Niccolai ’16 (javelin/109’10”) and Brian Williamson ’13 (discus/94’3”), as well as by the 4x400 relay team of Troxell, Wible, Brankov and Alec Johnson ’15 (3:51). The girls placed 10th and the boys were 11th at the Somerset County Championships on May 7 at Hillsborough High School. Leading the girls were Klein with a record-breaking (5:00) runner-up finish in the 1600m and Benoit, who placed third in the 800 meter run (2:24). Steck and Andersen finished fourth (4:27) and fifth (4:30), respectively, in the boys’ 1600m and joined Troxell and Brankov for eighth (3:35) in the 4x400 relay as well. Both squads continued to make history at the Skyland Conference Championships on May 15. While Steck became the first Knight ever to win the boys’ 1600m

(4:18) at the meet, Klein also earned the girls’ best finish ever in the 800m and 1600m runs. A runner-up in each event, Klein set a new GSB mark (2:17) in the 800m and earned a personal record (4:59.96) in the 1600m. Along with a fifth place finish from Steck in the 800 meter run (1:58), other fine performances were displayed by Andersen who took third in the boys’ 1600m (4:21) and by Quinn who placed sixth in the girls’ 3200m (11:15). On May 20, GSB hosted the NJISAA Prep B Championships. Both Andersen (800m/2:00; 3200m/10:18) and Troxell (200m/23.6 seconds; 400m/51.4 seconds) captured gold medals to lead the boys to an overall fourth place team finish. Also finishing first in the 1600m (4:30) as well as third in the 200m (23.9 seconds) was Steck. Klein medaled with gold in the 800m (2:17) and with silver in the 3200m (11:42) to elevate the girls to a third place team finish. Additional second place results were posted by Tafaro (boys’ javelin/127’0”) and Iannaconi (girls’ 1600m/5:28). Both were followed by Benoit and Comick with third place finishes in the girls’ 200m (28.57 seconds) and shot put (31’11.25”). Klein (800m/2:18; 1600m/5:02) and Quinn (3200m/11:18) secured first place finishes for the girls in the Non Public B South Sectional Championships on May 24. Also guiding their team to a runner-up finish were Benoit (400m/1:03; 800m/2:23) and Ensley (3200m/11:59) who placed second in each of their respective events. The boys placed fourth overall behind back-to-back wins from Steck in the 800m (1:58) and 1600m (4:29). Trailing just seconds behind with silver in the 800m (2:01) and 1600m (4:30) was Andersen, who also finished runner-up in the 3200m (10:05) and the 4x400 relay (3:38) alongside Steck, Brankov and Troxell. The Knights posted several fine performances at the Non Public B Group Championships on May 31. The girls placed fourth overall at the championship meet, led by Klein who earned first in the 800m (2:18) and 1600m (5:07) runs, and secured a bronze medal in the 3200m (11:33.1).

Quinn also placed runner-up in the girls’ 1600m (5:15) and 3200m (11:33) events, while Zhu (long jump/15’5.25”) and Benoit (800m/2:24) finished sixth in their fields. The boys’ squad secured a 10th place overall finish, as Andersen and Steck earned silver in the 1600m (4:22) and 800m (1:55). Ten GSB student-athletes qualified for the NJSIAA Meet of Champions in early June, which was highlighted by Klein taking sixth in the state during the girls’ 1600m with a school record time of 4:53.69. Having graduated seven seniors this June, the Knights will look toward returning teammates Rebecca Richardson ’14, Shane Burchard ’15, Madeline Quinn ’15, Shannah Finkel ’16, William Metzler ’16 and Lillie Wilson ’16 to set the pace for those newcomers that join the squad. 11

Middle School Track Team Ranks High at Championship Meets The Middle School track and field team garnered much success while competing in two championship events this spring: the Silver Spike Invitational and Bernardsville Rotary. A highlight of the Middle School athletics program each year, the Knights hosted their annual Silver Spike Invitational at Gill St. Bernard’s on May 18. The boys’ squad took first in a field of 12 as Michael Morreale ’17 led his team with a new school record and first place finish in the high jump (5’7”), as well as first in the shot put (42’0”) and second in the 100m dash (12.08 seconds). Top finishes were also obtained by Felix Andersen ’17 with wins in the 800m (2:21.7) and 1600m (4:57), and by Connor Beard ’17 who threw 85’8½” for third in the discus. The girls placed fifth overall behind second place results from Sophie Parker ’18 in the long jump (12’5”) and Lauren Reid ’18 in the 100 meter hurdles (19.7 seconds). Taking third just behind Reid in the 100m hurdles was Kennedy Hayes ’18 who crossed the line in 19.8 seconds. Parker, Sophie Morris ’17, Melissa Jean ’17 and Erica Phiansunthon ’17 also paced the 4x100 relay squad to a third place finish (1:00.57). Hosted each year by the Rotary Club of Bernardsville—an organization dedicated to encouraging and fostering service, high ethical standards and recognition of worthiness—the 63rd annual Bernardsville Rotary took place May 20 at Bernards High School. Aside from breaking his own high jump record with a 5’8,” Morreale also set new marks in both the shot put (1st/35’1”) and 100m dash (2nd/12.0 seconds). Meanwhile, Andersen’s first place finish in the 1600 meter (4:53.75) surpassed the previous GSB record (4:56) established The Middle School spring track and field team, including coaches Pete Roslund (l.) and Shelly LaBarre (r.). in 1998. Additional records shattered by Andersen throughout the season also included a 2:19.8 finish in the 800 meter run. From the girls’ squad, stellar performances were displayed by both the 4x100 relay team (1st/58.2 seconds) and Parker in the long jump (2nd/14’5½”).

GSB Seniors Earn Year-End Athletic Distinction Eleven student-athletes received year-end awards for combined athletic and academic excellence. Their dedication to balancing both study and sport has led to much-deserved recognition: Senior Emily Quinn received the Joyce Creasey Memorial Award, presented annually at Commencement to Gill St. Bernard’s top female student-athlete. With 12 varsity letters in cross country, indoor track and spring track and field, Quinn has earned multiple all-conference, all-county and allstate honors. Quinn’s school-record performances have also led Gill’s XC and spring track and field teams to state championship success. Jaren Sina is the 2013 recipient of the Harold D. Nicholls Memorial Award, given each year at Commencement to the best senior male-athlete at GSB. Sina, a four-year starter with the varsity boys’ basketball program, has guided the Knights to three conference and two county championships. Sina has earned numerous all-state honors, was three-time Somerset County Player-of-the-Year, and finished his career as the county’s all-time leader in both points and assists. Emily Iannaconi and Jae-Chiang Wong were named Somerset County Scholar-Athletes-of-the-Year. A prolific distance runner, Iannaconi contributed to conference, Prep B and state championships. She earned varsity letters across all 12 seasons and qualified for several NJSIAA Meet of Champions events. Wong was a three-year starter with the

varsity boys’ soccer team, which won back-to-back State Sectional titles as well as the NJISAA Prep B Championship title in 2012. One of the team’s leading scorers throughout his tenure, Wong has also received all-conference and all-county recognition. Amanda Greenberg and Brian Steck were named Skyland Conference Scholar-Athletes-of-the-Year. An all-conference, all-prep and all-county softball player, Greenberg was responsible for leading her team to three consecutive Prep B finals, as well as helping the varsity program advance to its first-ever NJSIAA State Sectional final in 2012. Greenberg also proved herself a standout member of the varsity girls’ soccer team. Throughout his time with the Knights, Steck has emerged as one of the most accomplished distance runners in the region, setting several school records and qualifying for multiple NJSIAA Meet of Champions events. He is a 12-season varsity letter holder, and has earned all-conference, all-county and all-state honors.

Michael Renna was selected to represent Gill St. Bernard’s School at the NJSIAA scholar-athlete luncheon at the Pines Manor in Edison, N.J. Renna served as a four-year starting goalkeeper with the varsity boys’ soccer team, which won conference, Prep B and state championships under his leadership. While with the Knights, he shattered the school record for career shutouts and earned all-state, all-conference and Somerset County Scholar-Athlete Award recipients (l. to r.) Jae-Chiang all-county honors.

Bethany Valentine was the GSB representative at the National Girls and Women in Sports Day at Seton Hall University. Valentine earned all-conference honors while playing second singles for the varsity girls’ tennis team, which won the 2012 Non Public B South Sectional title and captured back-to-back Skyland Conference Raritan Division crowns. In the winter months, Valentine also served as captain of the varsity cheerleading squad. Kelly Stefanick was Gill’s 2013 nominee for the Jan Baker Female Scholar-Athlete Award, recognized by all independent schools throughout New Jersey. Stefanick, a three-year starter with the varsity girls’ soccer team, has earned all-area, all-prep and all-conference distinction. Through her role as center back, the Knights earned 23 total victories in the past two years and posted four straight winning seasons. Nicholas Blackman and John William Murphy were Gill’s nominees for the Nick Gusz Male Scholar-Athlete Award, recognized by all New Jersey independent schools. A four-year letter winner in soccer, ice hockey and baseball, Blackman captained the school’s first-ever varsity ice hockey team, and was a captain and leading hitter on GSB’s varsity baseball team, which earned its fourth straight winning season this spring. Murphy was a two-time captain of the GSB golf team, winning three conference tournament division championships in his four years as a starter. He qualified for the 2012 NJSIAA Tournament of Champions, and was a key contributor to the success of both the soccer and ice hockey programs at GSB.
