Environmental Geoscience Geologists play a critical role in understanding and protecting our environment.

Human Health – Geologists predict and document the distribution of natural geological materials, such as asbestos, arsenic-bearing minerals and radioactive minerals that pose potential risks to human health.

Geologists study the environment Land use changes – Geologists help remediate soil erosion, dry-land salinity and acid sulphate soil problems; allowing more sustainable agriculture and coastal development.

Waste Disposal – Geologists help to manage urban waste, sewage, hazardous chemicals and radioactive waste that threaten soil and water resources.

Climate Change – Geologists unravel the record of Earth's past climate that is preserved in sediments, coral reefs, glaciers and cave deposits, giving insight into a dynamic climate and the possible effects of future climate change.

Carbon Economy – Geologists are providing critical information to studies on the safe storage of carbon dioxide (CO2) in underground reservoirs, and the development of processes to harvest geothermal energy from hot rocks deep below the surface.
