Living with Natural Hazards Volcanic Eruptions - Volcanic eruptions are among nature’s most spectacular displays; both awesome and deadly. Volcanoes present a major hazard to those who live near them and alter the climate when large volumes of ash are erupted into the atmosphere.

Landslides and subsidence A landslide is a natural event that occurs when soil resting on top of a slippery slope layer, such as clay, loses traction through water saturation and slips down the slope. The material moving down slope can destroy or bury anything in its path.

Earthquakes - Sudden releases of energy in the earth’s crust create seismic waves resulting in earthquakes. Every day thousands of earthquakes occur around the world.

Tsunamis - Huge waves can form by sudden displacement of the seabed due to large earthquakes. When these waves reach land, they can cause severe destruction and flooding. By studying these events, geologists help to predict when and how tsunamis occur.

Most are small, but large earthquakes can cause major damage and destruction.
