PRESENTING SUPPORTING

In Portland, long before there were formal programs or public investments, there were neighbors who saw suffering up close and chose to act. Volunteers. Faith communities. Ordinary people. Citizens who refused to walk past someone in need. They opened their doors, served meals, offered beds, and built something out of compassion and urgency.

Our own story is part of that legacy. What started as a small, volunteer-driven response grew because people kept showing up. One act of care became many. One shelter became a network of support. And over time, that grassroots effort helped shape the broader system we know today.

But here’s the truth: even as that system has grown, it has never replaced the role of community. It has always depended on it.

And now, at a time when public support is uncertain and, in some cases, eroding, that truth matters more than ever. Because if history tells us anything, it’s this: when systems falter, community steps forward.

So tonight isn’t just about celebrating what exists—it’s about reaffirming what makes it possible. Your generosity. Your belief. Your willingness to be part of something bigger than any one organization. Thank you for showing up. And thank you for continuing a tradition that has always been at the heart of this work: neighbors helping neighbors, and a community that refuses to turn away.

FROM SHELTER TO HOUSED!
