Florence is full of Christmas lights and colours in December, transforming streets and squares into fairy-tale settings, where the magical atmosphere of Christmas sparkles in every corner. Between the magical Christmas decorations and the smell of mulled wine, you will be spellbound with this spectacle that combines tradition with modernity. The main attraction is Piazza del Duomo, which from 8 December is transformed into a glittering stage. The tall and majestic Christmas tree dominates the square, while the Nativity scene in the churchyard of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore will dazzle you with its terracotta fgures, crafted by skilled artisans. A few small details that capture the most authentic spirit of the season. But Florence at Christmas time is not only about traditions. The Florence Lights Up festival, with its spectacular Christmas lights illuminates Ponte Vecchio, Palazzo Vecchio and the city’s districts until 7 January, creating a modern and decorative touch to these winter nights.

FLORENCE

Piazza del Duomo becomes the main stage for this Christmas show. The tree will be put up on the 8th of December to delight the young and old. In the churchyard of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, the live nativity scene is a true masterpiece. Meanwhile, until Jan. , the common parts of the Rivoli Boutique Hotel will be invaded by more than handcrafted cribs made by Claudio Ladurini. Then on January , there will be the spectacular Cavalcade of the Three Kings along the streets of the historic centre, inspired by the famous cycle of frescoes by Benozzo Gozzoli at Palazzo Medici Riccardi: a parade of 700 people in costumes on foot and on horseback, including the magnifcent Three Kings, who will parade up to Piazza del Duomo.

It is known as one of the best nativity scenes in Italy, the mechanical nativity scene of the Siena railway station It was created in by Giancarlo Palazzi, who was an employee of the railway. Every year new fgurines are added to it (all from San Gregorio Armeno in Naples) with over 400 different special effects. SIENA

E’ considerato uno dei migliori presepi d’Italia, è il presepe meccanico della stazione ferroviaria di Siena. Fu ideato nel da Giancarlo Palazzi che allora era un dipendente delle ferrovie, ogni anno gli vengono aggiunti nuovi personaggi (tutti provenienti da San Gregorio Armeno a Napoli), ha superato i 400 effetti tra luci, suoni, movimenti. Dal dicembre alla prima domenica dopo l’epifania dalle alle , e si trova al ° binario, accanto alla sala d’aspetto.

It is the most traditional Tuscan live nativity scene. It takes place in this small village in Lunigiana with a magical procession through the streets of the town holding torches and candles. At the end of the th century Felice Bojola started producing artisanal leather goods and opened two shops in Tuscany, one in Viareggio and the other in Florence, where the current headquarters of the Bojola company was inaugurated in . From the s Bojola made use of natural leather and cotton, contributing to the birth of a new casual style, which made the brand well-known and appreciated throughout the world. Now in its fifth generation, the company is managed by Francesca, Costanza and Federico Bojola.

Alla fine dell’ Felice Bojola avviò una produzione di pelletteria ed aprì due negozi in Toscana, uno a Viareggio e l’altro a Firenze, dove nel fu inaugurata l’attuale sede della ditta Bojola. Dagli anni ’ Bojola fa uso del cuoio naturale e dei cotoni, contribuendo alla nascita di un nuovo stile sportivo, che ha reso il marchio noto e apprezzato in tutto il mondo. Scuola del Cuoio was founded after World War II by Gori and Casini families, Florentine leather artisans since the ’s. Their mission was to teach orphans of the war a trade with which to earn a living. In , Scuola del Cuoio opened its doors to clients inside the laboratories, located in the ancient dormitory of the Franciscan Friars inside the Monastery of Santa Croce. The unique location, the quality of its products and the commitment to tradition has made Scuola del Cuoio famous. With the passing of Silvano Casini and Marcello Gori in , Marcello’s three daughters, Laura, Francesca, and Barbara, along with the grandchildren Tommaso, Filippo and Beatrice started to manage Scuola del Cuoio and continue to be committed to the great tradition of quality products and personal customer service. In , Barbara, Francesca, and Laura Gori founded the Marcello Gori Foundation with the aim of offering scholarships to disadvantaged young people at the Scuola del Cuoio, in order to teach the art of leatherworking to future generations.

Christmas in Florence lights up with the artisan sweets and pastries of Caffè Gilli, where master pastry chef Massimo Davitti, assisted by Ivan Santoro, creates an array of delicacies designed to celebrate the holiday. Their fagship product is the artisan panettone, the quintessential festive cake, the result of hours’ rising with a live sourdough starter. The classic panettone is a tribute to tradition: little cubes of candied orange and lemon for fragrance and freshness, Australian raisins for sweetness and luxury, orange and vanilla paste for irresistible favour. Alongside this are the Christmas specials: the Mandorlato, with a crunchy almond topping (also available lactose-free); Pistachio Panettone, containing delicious Sicilian pistachio cream; and the Chocolate version, packed with dark and milk chips, the perfect treat for chocolate lovers. Winter is the season for Vin Brulé, the drink that warms the hands and the heart, symbolising conviviality and celebration. At Giacosa, in the heart of historic Florence, we’ve decided to reinvent the classic tradition with a modern slant. The result is the Negroni Brulé, a delicious revisitation packed with elegance and depth. Instead of the conventional wine, we have sophisticated spiced vermouth, with a dash of bitters for a bold, robust aroma. Added to this is rhubarb, enriched with marjoram for freshness and richness on the palate. Completing the mix is the unusual contribution of Brazilian cachaça, which brings notes of straw, hay and chamomile, along with a delicate sweetness. A few drops of our special blend of bitters and propolis for added complexity, and the whole experience is topped off by a marshmallow toasted with sugar and cinnamon. The Hotel Savoy inaugurates the holidays with Deck the Halls, in collaboration with artist Andrea Crespi, Maître Cartier Grimaud and Dynamo Camp. At the heart of this project is the theme of “playing”, that aligns perfectly with the values of Rocco Forte Hotels. The project features a stunning Christmas tree created by Crespi with hundreds of decks designed Grimaud showcased in the Hotel Savoy’s hotel lobby. The installation is complemented by a solo exhibition of the artist’s work, on until the end of January , which includes the David dei 100, created with the children of Dynamo Camp. A number of limited edition card decks will be donated to Dynamo Camp families, underlining the project’s commitment to solidarity. Christmas decorations, curated by Sebastian Flowers, and the culinary offerings of the Hotel Savoy chef complete the experience, with events that include Christmas Eve dinner, Christmas lunch, New Year’s Eve dinner and brunch. The Hotel Savoy is a venue for a Christmas experience that’s all about beauty, art and good food.
