MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY KIA WANTS TO BRING ITS ELECTRIC CARS TO MEXICO One of KIA’s plans in the medium term is to be the leading company in electric cars in the world, so it wants to bring its models of this type to Mexico. However, considering that the market is not developed, the elimination of the Value Added Tax (VAT) would help boost the sale of such vehicles in the country. The director of the automaker in the country, Horacio Chavez, told Forbes Mexico that these technologies are still expensive due to economies of scale, so an attractive price is needed to make them affordable for the people. According to the executive, this has been achieved in countries that have implemented incentives and clear public policies, so he expects to obtain this in the short or medium term from the authorities, along with an infrastructure development plan to be able to use them on a daily basis. “It seems to me that the value-added tax is the easiest thing to do. If they simply did not charge it, lowering the price of vehicles by 16% would make the commercialization take off, putting it at an accessible price”, he affirmed. Horacio Chavez commented that over the years, they had had several talks with the authorities, but unfortunately, there has not been much progress, but the industry does not take its finger off the line and is starting to talk more about the subject.

An example of this is the agreement to which Mexico adhered to the proposal of the President of the United States to try to reach a 50% joint marketing of vehicles, to which several powers have been incorporated. “KIA is promising to become the leading brand in electrification and mobility issues if that is the company’s medium and short-term vision. Of course, in Mexico, we will be looking at more options, we will eventually have our electric vehicles, and we will end up adding to the portfolio of electric vehicles that KIA is developing,” he said. As part of this plan, the company will launch in the country the second generation of its hybrid Niro, a model with which it has positioned itself as the second player in the segment in Mexico.

MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY NEARSHORING BOOSTS RUBBER INDUSTRY IN MEXICO: HULTEK
The relocation of companies as a result of compliance with the Mexico, United States, and Canada Agreement (USMCA) has caused the rubber industry in Mexico to increase its production by 20% during the last year, and in the case of tires up to 50%, driven mainly by orders from the automotive sector, in addition to the appliance industry.
According to statistics from the National Auto Parts Industry (INA), Mexico manufactured automotive rubber products for a value of 1.434 billion dollars in 2020, and for the following year, production increased 19.3% to 1.71 billion dollars.
The rubber industry is 70% dependent on raw materials from abroad, but the location of supplier companies will provide great opportunities to be productive and competitive in the North American market, said Carlos Gonzalez, CEO of Hultek, a Mexican company that supplies custom-made rubber parts to the automotive industry.
In the case of rims and tires’ production increased 55% in one year, from manufacturing a value of 1.021 billion dollars to 1.581 billion dollars. “Auto parts companies are the ones that have most sought relocation due to the conditions and facilities of the new USMCA, which requires a higher regional content, but also offers multiple benefits, such as a more agile export and a very compact supply chain,” explained Carlos Gonzalez.
In 2020, the so-called nearshoring (relocation) of auto parts companies accounted for 12% of the statistics; by 2021, auto parts companies accounted for 50% of nearshoring at a national level, said the executive.
INA President Francisco Gonzalez said that as of the first quarter of this year, 379 million dollars have arrived, which are added to the investment originated in 2020, which accumulates 48,725 million dollars.

MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY
“Many of these capitals come from Asia and Europe seeking to bring their production to Mexico with the concept of nearshoring and delivering their product on time, avoiding problems of being left on the road and attending to their supply chain,” he said. There is also reshoring (investments that had gone to Asia and are returning), which a few years ago were displaced due to lower prices or advantages they had at the time in Asia, and these production lines are being brought back to Mexico. The auto parts industry is increasing the production of gearboxes, combustion, and chassis, in addition to products for electric vehicles and radial tires for buses and trucks, air purification and cable, spark plugs, and many rubber parts.

“(Rubber) is a sector that offers great opportunities, both for raw materials -currently, companies like Hultek import up to 70% of all their raw materials-, as well as for other competitors that have the capacity to supply these large projects,” the rubber company representative added. Currently, Mexico has production plants of some of the main rubber companies in the world, but these are mainly tire companies: Continental AG, Michelin North America, Goodyear, and Bridgestone, to mention a few.

MULTICOLORED TALENT At this time of year, it is increasingly common for companies’ websites, institutional pages, and social networks, as well as those of their executives, to be full of multicolored images seeking to highlight the commitment of organizations to foster inclusive work cultures. There are a variety of groups that can help companies take action to create workplaces that are strong in diversity and inclusion. You can also consult the learning guide published this year by the International Labor Organization (OIT) to help employers’ and workers’ organizations, design measures to ensure equal opportunity and treatment for LGBTQ+ people in the workplace. There is already a precedent in Mexico of a first case in which a person won a homophobia lawsuit against a workplace.
