THE BRIDGE TO THE FUTURE This was the motto of this year’s LOHMANN Franchise Distributor Meeting. Due to the ongoing Corona travel restrictions, which unfortunately continued into 2021, we had to postpone our Franchise Distributor Meeting which was originally scheduled to take place in Hamburg in June and to change concept. Therefore, FDM went ONLINE. But especially this new form of a proven format showed again that LOHMANN is always ready to face new challenges. No matter in which field. As you all probably know by now, it is now us, the new dual leadership at LOHMANN, who will face these challenges in the future: Jörg Heier - Managing Director Operations and Christoffer Ernst - Managing Director Sales. In our opinion, the motto chosen for the conference also symbolizes this generational change at the management level. With the combination of long years of experience in production as a basis and fresh new ideas in marketing and sales, we are embarking on a successful path towards the future together with you, our customers and business partners. Thus, the motto can already be extended: The Bridge to the Future - The bridge to your success. Obviously, we have already set out on our journey as you can see in our cover story. The heart of LOHMANN is and remains genetics and the outstanding performance and high quality of our breeding lines. We hope you enjoy reading our Poultry News annual edition. As always, you can expect a colourful mix of topics peppered with a few little surprises.

NEW PERFORMANCE STANDARDS GENETIC PROGRESS CONTINUES
The performance standards for all the LOHMANN Layer strains have been used now since more than 4 years without changes. However, in every generation the genetic potential is increasing through selection of the best individuals as parents of the next pureline generation. The genetic progress is delivered with every new grandparent- and parentstock generation to our customers and in this way realised on the commercial level.

Sometimes the question comes up: “When will this “new Generation” be available on the Market”?
We do not change the performance standards every generation with a small adjustment, but rather we let the genetic progress accumulate for a few years and make then in one bigger step the adjustment cumulated for a few years.
To make it clear: this update on the breed standards is not a change to a “new Generation”. This update is the result of 4-5 rounds of selection in the same pure lines as before as a routine genetic progress and not a change of any line to another pureline. The major changes of this update can be summarised for all standards: Due to improvement in persistency, a higher increase in rate of lay at older ages, therefore longer productive life of the hens. Extension of all cage standards from 95 to 100 weeks. Extension of the cage free standards from 85 weeks to 90 weeks for all brown breeds and from 85 to 100 weeks for all white and tinted breeds. So, for the white breeds, the cage and cage free standards go to the same age. Cage free standards start one week earlier than before, start is now already in 19 weeks instead of 20 weeks with 10% rate of lay. More flat egg weight curve: same egg weight before 40 weeks of age, less increase in egg weight at older age to achieve the best persistency and a good shell stability at older age. No change in body weight (after the adjustment of body weight in 2018)

Of course, with the usual “delay” due to the four levels of the multiplication pyramid (Pureline – Grandparent – Parent – Commercial). We do not change the performance standards every generation with a small adjustment, but rather we let the genetic progress accumulate for a few years and make then in one bigger step the adjustment cumulated for a few years.
Improvement of persistency COVER STORY | New performance standards: Genetic progress continues
Especially after 60 weeks of age, the laying performance of the hens has improved. This is the consequence of the top-ranking selection target of laying persistency and late shell quality. The increased number of saleable eggs from a longer production cycle of a flock gives an economic advantage to the egg producer. The cost for the pullet is distributed to a higher number of eggs and therefore the pullet costs per egg are reduced. Under field conditions, more and more flocks show a longer production period and therefore the length of the cage free standards have been prolonged to 90 weeks for brown varieties and to 100 weeks for white varieties.
In alternative management for brown birds, it is still more difficult to keep the flocks as long as in cages but in white birds, there is nearly no more gap in the depopulation age between cage and cage free flocks.

As an example, you can see from the next table the comparison of the old to the new standards for LB CLASSIC in cage housing.
The egg number at 72 weeks has increased by 3.8 eggs and at 80 weeks increased by 6.0 eggs. This increase comes from a slightly higher peak but comes mainly from the improvement in the persistency, especially after 72 weeks.

Comparison of egg weight curve From the comparison of the egg weight in the previous table, it may look at the first glance like a genetic reduction in the egg size. But this is not the full truth. If we look at the old and new egg weight curve (see next figure) it is clearer that the egg weight curve is nowadays flatter than in the old standard. From the genetic pressure on persistency and improvement in the shell stability in older age, it is necessary and helpful that the bird is able to avoid a strong increase in egg size after 50 weeks of age and have a flatter egg weight curve.

How to read the performance standards

The LOHMANN BREEDERS breed standards for both cages and alternative housing systems are created in a way that the target values do not correspond to the maximum performance that can be reached. The maximum performance will only be achieved if always perfect conditions for the birds are provided. This is not realistic under “real life” field conditions. Therefore, our standards are based on average field conditions and should be realistic and reachable under average management-, feed- and environmental conditions. The genetic potential of LOHMANN layers is much higher than the performance targets and is represented in the top performing flocks which can reach 20-30 eggs more than the standards. It is very clear, that under moderate climate conditions like in Europe, it is easier to achieve the targets than under hot climate conditions in which the birds are challenged by much higher disease pressure and more severe vaccination programs.
Genetic progress will continue You can be sure, that the genetic work in LOHMANN BREEDERS will continue to create genetic progress. With investments in new breeding farms (Canada, Spain and Scotland), new technologies (genomic selection) new equipment (transponder nest), challenge tests under difficult conditions (Challenge Sib test in Russia) and continued testing of crossbred birds under field conditions in Russia, Spain and Columbia, the future of genetic progress is safeguarded and sustainable. The progress is based not only on economic important traits like laying rate and feed conversion but also in improved shell quality and livability. After many generations of intense selection, the genetic parameters (heritability) are still showing a clear potential for further improvement. Due to a careful management of the level of inbreeding, there are no negative signs, like inbreeding depression or reduced variability. The biological limit of one egg per day is reached during laying peak in high performing flocks, but longer laying sequences still give potential for improved persistency with improved shell quality. The testing period on the pureline birds was extended to over 100 weeks in one cycle.
A combination of captured data from the purelines in single cages and family groups are complemented with improved genomic selection will therefore continue to drive the genetic progress.

Mr. Jörg Heier has taken over the position of Managing Director Operations with effect from July 1, 2021. In this position, he is responsible for the overall operational management of the company, including administration and the entire production and supply chain. Many of you know Jörg Heier (49) who has already joined LOHMANN in 2014 as Director of Global Production with full responsibility for all global production operations. Mr. Heier holds a degree in civil engineering with focus on animal husbandry.
He can rely on almost 25 years of experience in the layer industry, having started his career as production manager in one of the largest German commercial layer business.

…meets new sales spirit With effect of October 1, 2021, Mr. Christoffer Ernst accepted the position as Managing Director Sales. He will assume responsibility for the overall commercial management of the company, including sales, technical service, marketing as well as all PR & communication related activities. Christoffer Ernst (47) is a Danish citizen and holds a degree in international marketing and management. He brings more than 20 years of high-level commercial management experience in the global egg industry to LOHMANN. Having lived in the US and Belgium he relocated to China in 1998 where he played a key role in the successful strategic development of the Asian market for leading players in the global egg handling and processing industry.

And of course, it was our new management structure that started it all! Introduced by our former Managing Director Mr. Javier Ramírez, the new LOHMANN dual leadership now had the opportunity to introduce themselves: Jörg Heier, Managing Director Operations and Christoffer Ernst, Managing Director Sales.
Afterwards, there was an update from the Genetics, Production, Logistics, Technical Service and Sales departments.
As it should be, the marketing department came up with something special and provided an engaging video to keep our participants well versed in the culinary world of eggs and local recipes, because as we know, the culinary delights are an integral part of our FDM meetings.

Our premiere was a complete success! Due to the ongoing Corona situation, we had to cancel our LOHMANN SCHOOL in Cuxhaven this year and change the concept of the event. Therefore, the LOHMANN SCHOOL, well known to all customers, became the LOHMANN SCHOOL goes ONLINE.

The new concept presented us new challenges but also opened up completely new possibilities. The number of participants was unlimited and so also clients of our customers could be considered and invited. Thus we reached the proud number of 1500 registrations and 600 to 1000 viewers per day!!! A really enormous result.
Another great advantage was that we could offer the training in two different time zones and in three different languages, English, Spanish and Russian, at the same time. The translations of the lectures were done by our own experts. This gave us the security of a technically and linguistically absolutely correct translation.
The new concept presented us new challenges but also opened up completely new possibilities. The number of participants was unlimited and so also clients of our customers could be considered and invited.
New concept with high-quality content With the online presentation, most of our experts entered new territory, because they now had to speak in front of a camera instead of a live audience. But all of them mastered this with bravery. The content was of course well-founded and of high quality, just as our clients are used to from the training courses.

The first day started of course with the origin of everything, the hatching egg. Our poultry experts Mark Allen, Thomas Calil and Davide Assirelli referred to the protection of the hatching egg as a “perfect package” and improving its condition for improving the chick quality. Then we went on with Farhad Mozafar… but watch out: “ATTENTION! Baby chicks on board”! We started the second day with our core business genetics when Dr. Matthias Schmutz and Björn Andersson inform us about improvements and the current status. Then we wanted to “fuel the machine” with Juan Valle who talked about nutrition. Afterwards, we went back to the basics of rearing management and nutrition with Mohammed Chairi and Robert Pottgüter. At the end of the day, Dr. Andreas Bublat “built up a protective shield” with the right vaccination. But the third day was also not to be missed covering basics like management and feeding of layers in production, two lectures given by our experts Mohammed Chairi and Robert Pottgüter. Leisure and social interaction is also possible online All those who have already attended our LOHMANN SCHOOL know that this event is also characterized by social interaction in the group of attendees. We always offer a leisure program after the lecture days to create a family atmosphere among the participants, which also always has a positive effect on the discussion rounds during and after the lectures. Of course, all this came up a bit short in an online format. But we as marketing department tried to remedy this a little and bring a piece of our beautiful, and weather-wise rather mixed, Cuxhaven into the world. In addition, many spectators followed our call to take a selfie of themselves while participating in the event. So nobody felt completely alone in front of the screen.

After being postponed a couple of times due to the pandemic, the event finally took place from 13. – 15. October 2021. The aim of the event is to bring together participants from all links in the production of eggs and broilers. LOHMANN played a special role in this event. We were the only layer breeding company that had an own stand at the fair and that actively participated in the congress.

The congress exceeded expectations with the participation of approximately 1.000 attendees, 45 speakers and 39 exhibition booths. Our stand was simple, but with an excellent appearance. The whole set-up allowed for pleasant customer conversations and at the same time the social distancing required nowadays. Our promotional material was well received. As most of the visitors to our stand were “insiders”, they were of course already looking for our updated management guides.

First Day - Workshop LOHMANN BREEDERS We could win two external speakers for our workshop: Mrs Maritza Tamayo Salmoran and Mr Roberto Becerra Olmedo. Our workshop was divided into three different parts. The first part was presented by our colleague Mr. Matheus Alves under the title “Critical points in the rearing and production of laying hens with a long laying period”. Secondly, Roberto Becerra Olmedo had the floor. This was about “Trends in egg production and animal welfare”. Mrs. Maritza Tamayo Salmoran concluded with her presentation on “How to strengthen and evaluate the immunity of laying hens in a long production cycle”.
After our workshop, which was by far the most attended with 128 participants, the three speakers found their way to our stand and were available for questions and discussions.

We were able to meet important representatives of our industry. On the one hand, the LPN Congress showed us our stability and reputation on the market and, on the other hand, we also had the opportunity to make new contacts. We are already looking forward to next year, when it will be LPN Congress in Miami again.

CUSTOMER DAYS OF GEFLÜGELZUCHT TER HEERDT A GREAT SUCCESS
Since January 2012, Geflügelzucht ter Heerdt has been a LOHMANN BREEDERS distributor in the Netherlands and Belgium. For several years Geflügelzucht ter Heerdt has also been successfully selling chicks and pullets in Germany. A satisfied group of almost 100 companies has been built up over the years. In addition to excellent genetics, customers particularly appreciate the competence, transparency and reliability of Geflügelzucht ter Heerdt.

On 11 and 18 November Geflügelzucht ter Heerdt organised the traditional customer days for its customers in Germany, this time in Haselünne and Twist. Both events were very well attended, with more than 100 participants in total! A reception with coffee and cake was followed by several presentations on current topics in the layer business.

Topics of interest Julian Tieben, Sales Consultant, explained the development of Geflügelzucht ter Heerdt on the German market. Afterwards, Jos Eringfeld, Managing Director at Geflügelzucht ter Heerdt, explained how to successfully implement the “no chick killing” issue. He believes Geflügelzucht ter Heerdt is very well positioned with the Plantegg process for sex determination in the early developmental stage of the embryo in the egg and is therefore looking to the future with confidence. Wim Lettink, technical director, illustrated the challenges in the planning of pullets and clarified how complicated the chick and pullet business is under the constantly changing conditions.. The Korf-Pohlmeier family then gave the audience an insight into pullet rearing, which led to lively discussions, but that’s how it should be at a customer conference after all.
LOHMANN LSL Lite - positive response The adjustment of the LSL Lite hen’s performance profile, which was announced from the beginning of 2021, is already showing positive results. Several participants reported good performance. They particularly appreciate the hen’s calm, robust behaviour.

Topics Thomas Calil presented the basic management points of rearing layer chickens, whereas Braulio Ruiz presented paramount aspects of farm biosecurity and bird health. Matheus Alves finalized it covering important vaccines principles and practical advice for vaccine handling, vaccination methods and procedures.

SAKURA MEETING 2021 The Japanese cherry blossom is one of the most important symbols of Japanese culture. It stands for beauty, departure and transience. Cherry blossom time marks a high point in the Japanese calendar and the beginning of spring, which bathes Japan in a pink-white sea of cherry blossoms (almost half of all deciduous trees in Japanese cities are cherry trees). That is why the time of the cherry blossom is also a favourite holiday and travel season in Japan, unfortunately our LOHMANN experts could not travel to Japan this year.

Just like the annual cherry blossom, the well-established Sakura Meeting of our sister company Ghen Corporation, which distributes more than one million layer parent stock chicks, is also an integral part of this time. Every year, 20 associated hatcheries participate in the Sakura Meeting, which highlights various aspects related to layers and parent stock. Although Japan’s cherry blossom was completely unaffected by Corona, Ghen Corporation had to come to terms with the ongoing pandemic situation. Therefore, the traditional Sakura Meeting was held as a virtual version this year. But even in this format, the LOHMANN poultry experts did not miss the opportunity to participate. Dr. Matthias Schmutz, chief geneticist at LOHMANN gave a genetics update tailored to our LSL. Dr Andreas Bublat, veterinary specialist, and Dr Matthias Voss, veterinary scientific director, illustrated the great importance of sound biosecurity procedures.

MR. GERALDO JOSÉ DE SOUZA PINTO PLANALTO POSTURA We remember a good and long-time business partner and an extraordinary person. Already in March 2021, Mr. Geraldo José de Souza Pinto, Sales and Service Manager of Planalto Postura in Brazil, passed away. He had to fight a severe cancer 2 years ago. At the end of last year, he even won the fight against Covid, unlike his wife who unfortunately did not make it. But early in 2021, the cancer came back stronger than ever and took his life within a few days.

During this long time we had the opportunity to meet Mr. de Souza Pinto several times and to get to know him from his private side as well. It was always a pleasure to meet him and especially the professional exchange was always enriching for both sides. We will always remember Mr. de Souza Pinto as an exemplary and committed expert in his field. A special person whom we greatly admired for his friendly and sympathetic nature, his extensive knowledge and his commitment.

NEW COLLEAGUES Esra Evrenkaya In August 2021 Esra Evrenkaya joined our Global Technical Service Team as a nutritionist. She lives in Turkey and is a certified Veterinary Specialist in Poultry and worked as a livestock manager in a big layer company in Turkey which has one and half million layers in production. During this period, she decided to learn more about chicken (layer/poultry), especially in the feeding sector, as this is a major cost factor in poultry farming. Esra started her PhD education at Ankara University at the faculty of agriculture department of animal nutrition. With this development her new title becomes a nutritionist. At the same time, she built a R&D department and she had studies about probiotics, amino acids, NIR calibrations.

Although new to LOHMANN BREEDERS, he is not a new face to Cuxhaven, where he has lived and worked at LAH, and neither to the LOHMANN family, where his wife has previously been part of the laboratory team. They now live in Queensland, Australia, not too far from their twin boys. With a veterinary degree, Eduardo’s poultry experience comes from different stages of his life, with poultry breeding, feeds, vaccines, and equipment, in positions based in Brazil, Canada, Germany, Malaysia and New Zealand.
Xinye Yang Xinye Yang also joined LOHMANN and the marketing department in August 2021. She has a bachelor’s degree in Arts and Business Administration and a master’s studies in Sociology. In the past 5 years, she worked as an Executive Manager in a manufacture. Responsible for marketing development and export-business support. Along the years, Xinye has organized trade fairs, events and developed different marketing projects.

Filter Coffee If the filter coffee tastes too bitter, it helps to add a piece of clean eggshell to the coffee filter. This makes it milder.
Beauty Tip Crushing eggshells in a mortar and then mixing them with an egg white makes a refreshing face mask for firm healthy skin. However, the eggshells should be washed thoroughly beforehand and disinfected in the oven at 100 degrees for 10 minutes.

Knives Crumbled eggshells can be frozen together with water to make a lime block on which you can then sharpen knives perfectly.
Dirt rims Egg shells remove dirt rims in glass vases. Put in one third of crushed eggshell and two thirds of water and leave overnight shake and ready for use!
Plant protection Eggshells also help against snail plagues. Against snail plague in the garden it helps to scatter crumbled eggshells around the plants. The snails do not crawl over them with their soft bodies and thus stay away from the plants.
New life An eggshell is an excellent and decorative planter for seedlings.
