TWA Flight 800 (Trans World Airlines) was an American flight that exploded on July 17th, 1996. All 230 people on the flight died. It departed JFK International Airport at 8:19 PM and exploded 12 minutes later. The flight was going to France.

Who was Courtney?

Courtney Elizabeth Johns (1978-1996) was a passenger on the flight. She had just graduated high school and turned 18. She was going to visit the exchange student her family hosted. She was the younger sister of comic book writer Geoff Johns.

Geoff Johns

Geoff Johns is an American comic book writer, television writer, and producer. He has worked for DC comics since 1997. He created the superhero Stargirl based on his deceased younger sister Courtney to memorialize her. He also focused on reviving characters from the 1940s into new comics. He has worked on many notable comic books, movies, and television shows for DC including the 2020 live action adaptation of Stargirl which he was the show runner, creator, and a writer for.

Courtney Whitmore

Stargirl (Courtney Elizabeth Whitmore) is an American teenage superhero created by Geoff Johns. The first appearance of Stargirl was in "DCU Heroes: Secret Files and Origins #1" in February 1999. From July 1999 to December 2000 he wrote Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. She is a gymnast and cheerleader who moves from California to a Blue Valley, Nebraska and becomes a superhero. In some versions she starts as the new Star Spangled Kid and some she starts as Stargirl after finding either the cosmic converter belt or cosmic staff.

The first animated appearance of Stargirl was in the television show Justice League Unlimited. However, the character only appeared in 2 episodes (2005-2006).

The first live-action appearance of Stargirl was in Smallville. She was portrayed by Britt Irvin and was in 4 episodes (20102011).

Stargirl in television

From 2020 to 2022, the live-action Stargirl series was on the CW. It was created by Geoff Johns. It had 3 seasons and 39 episodes. It focuses on Courtney (portrayed by Brec Bassinger) moving states with her Mom, Stepfather, and Stepbrother. She discovers Starman's cosmic staff and becomes Stargirl and fights the Injustice Society of America after the JSA members died. It is more accurate to the comics than the previous live action representations of her.
