Groton School

groton school’s 1994 varsity field hockey team was special. With a regular

season record of 13–1–1, including a hard-fought victory over St. Mark’s, whom Groton had not beaten in eight years, the team tied with St. Paul’s for first place in the ISL and was the top-seeded team in the small-school division at the NEPSAC tournament at Hotchkiss. They went on to win the tournament, beating Berkshire, St. George’s, and Holderness. The closest game was against St. George’s, the number-four seed, in the semifinal game, when in the fourth minute of suddendeath double overtime, Claudia Asano Barcomb ’95 pushed in the winning goal. It was the first league championship for a girls team in school history, and the team was inducted into the Groton School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2015.

On September 20, as part of the daylong celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of coeducation at Groton School, Kathy Leggatt—coach of the 1994 team—was joined by Claudia Asano Barcomb, Headmaster Temba Maqubela, and C. Amory Frothingham Ford ’78 for a ceremonial coin toss to honor that magical season and all of the girls who have worn a Groton uniform over the past fifty years.
