History.
The Thin White Duke was founded in early 2010 and opened its doors to the public in December of that year. Situated on an old monastery and still retaining the original features including a tunnel that once ran under the great border city to the Cathedral, it has become a favoured eating and drinking abode for Carlisle and its many visitors. The name is a nod to David Bowie and throughout the Bar you will find musical influences, culminating with DJ’s on both Friday and Saturday nights creating a cool vibrant atmosphere.
David Robert Jones (8 January 1947 – 10 January 2016), known professionally as David Bowie, was an English singer, songwriter and actor. He was a leading figure in popular music for over five decades, acclaimed by critics and other musicians for his innovative work. Born in Brixton, South London, Bowie developed an interest in music as a child, eventually studying art, music and design before embarking on a professional career as a musician in 1963. “Space Oddity” became his first top-five entry on the UK Singles Chart after its release in July 1969. After a period of experimentation, he re-emerged in 1972 during the glam rock era with his flamboyant and androgynous alter ego Ziggy Stardust. He remained musically active until he died of liver cancer two days after the release of his final album, Blackstar (2016).

Also, you can choose one out of fourteen different glazing they offer on the menu or get one of six different desserts that you can choose or if you don’t want to get anything bigger, you also have a choice to get one of five sandwiches they offer such as Smoked Salmon Wrap or Cajun Chicken Wrap. White Duke offers a lot of different food meals that should suit everyone at a decent price.
D r i nk s The drink menu in Thin White D uke contains many different d rinks almost for every occasion, ranging from soft drinks like sodas and juices for causal mean to d rinks that contain exotic fruits with alcohol suit able for differen t occasions, besides that they also offer someth ing stronger from on tap that can satisfy people with stronger needs, but besid es on tap you als o can get bottled alcohol from places all over th e world like Mexico, Belgium , Spain, Iceland and for celebrations they offer c hampagne and sp arkling drinks.

w e i v r e t In During our time at the White Duke, we was able to ask a staff member a few questions. Some interesting info rmation came up about a new resturant na med Spider and Fly opening rather soon on Scotland road. This bar also themed by music, the tit le influenced by ‘The Spider and The Fly’, by The Rolling Stones. Unfortunately, the bar staff didn’t seem to know too much about the resturant its elf, However, we did talk about how love ly the resturant itself is and how much they enjoy working at the Thin White Duke. The staff described the bar as “Chille d” with a “Classy Vibe” which I would agree with completely.

MOVEMBER Each year the Thin W hite Duke proudly, and sometimes embarrassin gly in the case of some of the facial hair grown , supports the renowne d Movember. For the last day, professional barbers very kindly donate an evening offering a free shave for anyone w ho has grown a lip slug over the mouth. With over £1400 raised in th ree years, the Duke is very proud to help fight the battle with Male cancer. But besides those two amazing events, White Duke also has DJ’s pla ying music every weeke nd.
