How was the Lake District formed?

STEP ONE: MOUNTAINS The earth’s surface is made up of tectonic plates, as they are constantly moving they sometimes clash and create mountains.

STEP TWO: ICE AGE As the climate cooled the Ice Age began.

Snow falls and accmulates in one place over a long period of time.

STEP THREE: GLACIERS

As the snow builds up glaciers are created, and when they become too heavy they move.

Whe has it c beco

en enough snow s accumulated compacts and omes glacial ice.

When the glacier becomes too heavy it moves, this is called basal slip.

STEP FOUR: GLACIERS ERODE THE LAND Large chunks of ice break off the glaciers and as they melt they create depressions in the ground.

STEP FIVE: LAKE BASINS When the glaciers melted they left behind rocks, boulders, sand and gravel that dammed the lakes, this is called Moraine.

The glacier leaves a trail of moraine when it melts, this comes from rocks that were caught on the sides, at the far end of glaciers, and trapped inbetween two glaciers.

STEP SIX: RAIN As the climate got warmer, it rained and this water filled the lake basins.

STEP SEVEN: LAKE DISTRICT FLOURISHES The large bodies of water and various different land types created a perfect habitat for many different forms of life to flourish.
