The seperate wagon is called the tender, which is pulled behind the locomotive and it holds the supply of coal.

The coal from the tender is loaded into the firebox through the fire door.

The fire heats up the boiler. the heat passes through dosens of metal tubes called the super heater tubes.

The tubes from the firebox run through the chimney and lets the smoke escape.

The steam generated in the boiler flows down into the cylinder.

The safefy valve on top of the train allows steam at dangerously high pressure to escape from the boiler.

A little machine called the inlet valve lets the steam in.

Pressure from the steam pushes the piston back and forth.

The piston is connected to the wheels called the crank and connecting rod, it works in an arm-elbow-shoulder joint.

As the piston pushes the crank and connecting rod this makes the wheels turn round and round!

The “chuff chuff” noise of a steam train makes moves back and for

s and puff of smoke happens when the piston rth in the cylinder.
