There is a ariety of methods to produce electricity. The main ones are nuclear power, fossil fuels, there is also more renewable sources of energy such as solar power, wind turbines and hydro electrical damns. e could e en harness electricity from the earths naturally ioni ed atmosphere.

As you can see here, unfortunately most of britains electricity is generated from fossil fuels so this is the technique I shall demonstrate.

In the latter years of the th century I established the rinci les of three hase electrical o er distribution. In a british gentleman named harles er became the first erson in ngland to ado t this system in his e tune an o er station near e castle. y this as the largest of its ind in uro e.

This is an Electric power plant - where electricity is generated.

The fossil fuels are burnt at an alarming rate to continuosly heat a vessel of water. This produces steam at a high pressure. The steam is then directed on to a turbine.

Turbine

The steam rotates the turbine on a shaft connected to an enormous electro magnet. Wire rotates inside a magnetic field causing an electric charge.

electro magnetic generator

The generator kicks out electricity at around 25,000 volts. To stop resistence over miles of wire and pylons the current must be lowered and the voltage upped to around 400,000.

This happens by feeding electricity through a transformer.

The electricity then travels through the pylons to sub stations.

The substations control direction and the voltage of the electricity There are over 400,000 sub stations in England.

For heavy industry the electric can be sent straight from the station at 30,000 volts. 10,000 for small towns and around 230 volts for regular households.

The electricity is now heading into youre home, either through high line wiring or underground earth wires. On its way in it must be monitered to regulate how much each house is spending, it passes through a meter which takes a reading.

As electric canot to be stored it has to be summoned to where it is needed. This is done by causing a positive charge, electricity’s negatively charged electrodes are attracted to a positive charge. When a socket is switched on this creates the charge that attracts the electrodes.
