May Health Observances & Awareness

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Care for your well-being: set boundaries, take short breaks, and connect with others to support your mind and mood.

Mindfulness reduces anxiety. To promote calm and balance, practice deep breathing or spend a few minutes in quiet reflection each day.

Self-care is essential. Move regularly, eat healthy meals, and rest to restore energy. If stress feels overwhelming, ask a trusted friend, family member, or professional for support. Your mental health matters.

As the weather warms, protect your skin: seek shade when outdoors, wear a wide-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses, and avoid indoor tanning. Remember, UV rays reach your skin even on cloudy days.

Use broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Apply 15 minutes before going outside. Reapply every 2 hours, especially after swimming or sweating. Make sure to cover your ears, neck, and feet. Use sunscreen year-round.

Check your skin monthly for new or changing moles or spots. For early detection, schedule routine skin exams with your provider and promptly consult them about anything unusual.

With spring in full swing, seasonal allergens like pollen, dust, and mold can trigger asthma symptoms and make breathing more difficult. During Asthma & Allergy Awareness Month, it’s important to take proactive steps to reduce exposure. Check daily pollen counts and try to stay indoors when levels are high, especially on windy days.

Keep windows closed, use air conditioning if possible, and consider using high-efficiency (HEPA) filters to improve indoor air quality. Showering and changing clothes after spending time outdoors can also help remove allergens and prevent them from spreading inside your home.

Managing asthma during allergy season also means staying consistent with your care plan. Take prescribed medications as directed, including daily controller inhalers, and always carry a rescue inhaler for quick relief if symptoms flare up.

Work with your healthcare provider to review or update your asthma action plan so you know how to respond to worsening symptoms. Regularly cleaning your home, avoiding known triggers, and maintaining open communication with your care team can help you breathe easier and stay active throughout the season.

SEASONAL HEALTH & WELLNESS TIPS

Hydration Tips: As temperatures rise in May, staying well-hydrated is essential for overall health and energy. Drinking enough water helps regulate body temperature, supports digestion, and keeps your skin healthy. Aim to drink water consistently throughout the day—even before you feel thirsty—and increase your intake if you are spending time outdoors or being physically active. You can also boost hydration by eating water-rich foods like fruits and vegetables, and by limiting sugary or caffeinated beverages that may contribute to dehydration.

Spring Allergy Advice: Spring allergies can make this time of year challenging for many individuals. To reduce exposure to pollen, check local pollen forecasts and try to stay indoors when levels are high, especially in the early morning and on windy days. Keep windows closed, use air conditioning when possible, and shower or change clothes after spending time outside to remove allergens. Regularly cleaning your home, including vacuuming with a HEPA filter and wiping down surfaces, can also help minimize indoor allergens and improve comfort.

Outdoor Safety: Spending more time outdoors is great for your health, but it’s important to stay safe. Protect yourself from ticks by wearing long sleeves and pants when hiking or walking in grassy or wooded areas, and check your skin and clothing after being outside. Using insect repellent can provide additional protection. Be mindful of bee and insect stings by avoiding strongly scented products, wearing light-colored clothing, and staying calm if a bee is nearby. If you have a known allergy to stings, always carry your prescribed emergency medication and seek immediate care if needed.

Healthy Habits: May is also the perfect time to refresh your healthy habits and enjoy the benefits of outdoor activity. Whether it’s walking, biking, gardening, or participating in community events, getting active can improve both physical and mental well-being. Start slowly if you’re returning to exercise, set realistic goals, and choose activities you enjoy to stay motivated. Pair your fitness routine with balanced nutrition and adequate rest to help you feel your best all season long.

MEMORIAL DAY SAFETY TIPS

MONDAY, MAY 25, 2026

As families gather to observe Memorial Day, it’s important to prioritize safety while enjoying the long weekend. Whether you’re traveling, attending a barbecue, or spending time outdoors, a little planning can help prevent accidents and keep everyone safe.

Travel Safety

If you’re driving, always wear your seatbelt, avoid distractions, and never drive under the influence. Holiday traffic can increase delays and hazards, so allow extra time and stay alert on the road.

Outdoor & Heat Safety

With warmer temperatures, stay hydrated, apply sunscreen regularly, and take breaks in the shade to avoid heat-related illness.

Water Safety

If you’re swimming or boating, wear life jackets, supervise children closely, and follow local safety guidelines.

Food Safety

Keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold to reduce the risk of foodborne illness, especially during outdoor gatherings.

Fire & Grill Safety

Use grills and fireworks with caution. Keep a safe distance and follow all safety instructions to prevent burns or injuries.

Medication & Health

If you or a family member has a chronic condition, make sure medications are readily available and taken as directed.

Memorial Day is a time to honor and remember those who have served. It’s also a time to care for yourself and your loved ones. By taking a few simple precautions, you can enjoy a safe, healthy, and meaningful holiday weekend.

Safety in Warm Temperatures

(National Sunscreen Day is May 27)

As temperatures rise in May, spending time outdoors can increase your risk of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Taking simple precautions can help protect your health.

Stay Hydrated

Drink plenty of water throughout the day—even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid excessive caffeine and sugary drinks, which can lead to dehydration.

Limit Heat Exposure

Plan outdoor activities during cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or evening. Take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.

Dress for the Heat

Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothing to help keep your body cool.

Know the Warning Signs

Early symptoms of heat-related illness include dizziness, nausea, headache, and excessive sweating.

If symptoms worsen—such as confusion, rapid pulse, or loss of consciousness—seek medical attention immediately.

Protect Your Skin

Apply sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and reapply regularly, especially during prolonged sun exposure.

Prevent Heat Risks

Never leave children or pets in parked vehicles, even for a short time.

By staying aware and taking these steps, you can safely enjoy outdoor activities while protecting your health during the warmer months.

May is a time to celebrate and honor the important women in our lives during Mother’s Day.

This special day is an opportunity to show appreciation for mothers, grandmothers, and caregivers who play a vital role in supporting the health and well-being of their families and communities. Whether it’s through a heartfelt message, quality time together, or a simple act of kindness, recognizing their contributions can have a meaningful impact on emotional wellness and connection.

It’s also a great reminder to encourage the women we love to prioritize their own health. Regular check-ups, preventive screenings, and self-care are essential for long-term wellness. Supporting mothers in taking time for themselves—whether it’s staying active, managing stress, or seeking care when needed—helps ensure they can continue to care for others. This Mother’s Day, celebrate by promoting healthy habits and reminding the caregivers in your life that their health matters too.

May is a time to recognize and celebrate the dedicated healthcare professionals who care for our communities every day.

Wednesday, May 6 – Tuesday, May 12

During National Nurses Week, we honor the compassion, skill, and commitment of nurses who play a vital role in patient care. From providing bedside support to coordinating treatment and education, nurses are often the first point of contact and a steady source of comfort for patients and families. Their dedication helps ensure safe, high-quality care and improves health outcomes across all settings.

Sunday, May 10 – Saturday, May 16

We also celebrate the entire healthcare team during National Hospital Week. This week recognizes the many professionals who work behind the scenes and on the front lines physicians, technicians, administrative staff, environmental services, and more—who all contribute to a safe and healing environment. Their teamwork, innovation, and commitment make it possible for healthcare systems to provide comprehensive, patient-centered care every day of the year.

Sunday, May 17 – Saturday, May 23

In addition, National EMS Week highlights the lifesaving work of emergency medical services professionals. EMTs and paramedics are often the first responders in critical situations, delivering rapid care when every second counts. Their expertise, quick decision-making, and dedication to serving others are essential to the health and safety of our communities. Together, these observances remind us to express gratitude for all healthcare workers and the vital roles they play in keeping us healthy and safe.

May is recognized as Military Appreciation Month, a time to honor the service, sacrifice, and resilience of those who have served and continue to serve in the United States Armed Forces.

Throughout the month, we reflect on the dedication of service members, veterans, and their families who contribute to the safety and security of our nation. Observances such as Memorial Day provide an opportunity to remember those who gave their lives in service, while also encouraging us to show gratitude to all who have worn the uniform.

This month also highlights the importance of supporting the health and well-being of military members and veterans. Access to quality healthcare, mental health resources, and community support services plays a vital role in helping them transition and thrive. Taking time to learn about available resources, check in on veteran friends or family members, and participate in local events are meaningful ways to give back. By coming together as a Community, we can ensure those who have served feel valued, supported, and cared for.
