Boundary

of Sound

Is an architecture without walls still an architecture, is a space not divided by bricks is still called space?

In the process of studying noise I was reminded of the destructive interference of sound waves that I learned in AS Physics.

I noticed an interesting phenomenon when was walking along the river at night: there were many open spaces around, but the two groups of square dancers were crowding together and competing by comparing whose stereo was louder. It seems that the domain of sound also represents the domain of people.

Similar to noise-cancelling headphones, the noise can be eliminated by generating sound waves in the opposite direction, same frequency and amplitude as the noise.

In order to build architectures that emit sound waves in opposite directions on the square, I placed a pair of corresponded sheds to wrap this square and adjusted their height difference

I added bamboo strips to my design as a decorative material as there are lots of bamboo plantings around the square.

The sound waves emitted by the building and the noise waves are not necessarily identical, so that the sound area of the square can be divided into black, white and grey sections.

Black zone-sound isolated

Grey zone-some sounds coming from both sides

White zone-sharing sound

Even noise can coexist peacefully in the square, the boundaries of space are defined according to the boundaries of sound.
