Throughout September we celebrated Associate Member Appreciation month… providing an opportunity to recognize and thank our suppliers, trade contractors and service providers for their commitment and support of our Association. As builders…we know that it takes a village to build a home. According to NAHB research…the average single-family home uses 24 different trade contractors and approximately 84% of the construction cost is subcontracted. And that’s before you count all the suppliers and other industry professionals who help take a home from an idea to reality. Associate members are an integral part of our Association…and we greatly value and appreciate each of you! Our combined Fall Parade of Homes and TOUR of Remodeled Homes showcasing newly constructed and professionally renovated homes will be held October 3-4 & 10-11. We invite you to come out and visit all the homes on tour. Our remodeled homes are open the first weekend only. A special thanks to our participating builders, remodelers, sponsors and advertisers…your support affords us the opportunity to provide these annual home tours…which promotes the value and importance of working with industry professionals. October is Careers in Construction month…we are kicking off the month with Oktoberfest, hosted and sponsored by Ferguson Home on October 7…and ending the month with our Building for the Future Casino Night on October 29. This is the primary funding source for our Scholarship Fund. We encourage you to support this initiative with a financial contribution as a sponsor or prize donor…as well as purchase tickets and attend. It is guaranteed to be a fun and worthwhile evening with 100% of the proceeds supporting our Scholarship Fund. We have awarded ten scholarships this past year…and our goal is to double that in the coming year…therefore your participation can help make a difference.

Building greater awareness and interest in the building industry is a year-round initiative in which industry members are needed. Meeting with high school, community college and college students…in the classroom, at careers fair and on job-site visits… are opportunities to expand their awareness. It’s important for young adults to hear your story…and learn about the vast opportunities available to them within our industry. These signature events have connected the community with GBA members…industry professionals who design, build, remodel and provide products and expertise that make exceptional homes possible. ctober is Careers in Construction Month…our focus is to continue to build greater awareness and interest in our industry…helping the next generation discover the many opportunities available in construction. As the need for skilled labor continues to grow, workforce development has never been more important. Our industry needs your participation. There are a variety of ways you can participate…from assisting with current workforce development initiatives…to sharing your story on how you became involved in the industry…to providing financial support for our Construction Careers Scholarship Fund.
Our goal is to support these students beyond receiving their associate degree and/or certification…to help them find employment opportunities with our members. Our Construction Careers, Scholarship and Casino Night committees are committed to growing our financial resources to afford us the opportunity to grant additional scholarships each year. We are extremely appreciative of the members who have made significant financial contributions to establish our Scholarship Fund…and to our Workforce Development Partners who annually sponsor our Building for the Future Casino Night.
Building Greater Awareness One of the most effective ways to strengthen the future of construction is to get involved with students at area high schools and community colleges. Students need to hear directly from the professionals who are doing the work. A classroom presentation, career-day conversation, job-site tour or hands-on demonstration can give students a completely different perspective on what a career in construction looks like. Industry professionals can share their own career stories…explain the skills they use every day and introduce students to opportunities they may never have considered. Your involvement can help students understand how classroom training connects directly to careers…and help educators ensure programs reflect the skills employers need.
