Walt Wooten 2026 GBA President
It’s hard to believe summer is almost here. Our Association has had a busy and productive first half of the year experiencing growth in membership, as well as participation in our marketing and networking events.
Welcome to our new members…along with new employees who have joined existing companies. We are here to support you and help you maximize the benefits of your membership. Take advantage of the volunteer and staff resources available to point you in the right direction based on your areas of interest.
Let’s Grow Together…our Board of Directors has challenged each other to recruit at least one new member this year…and I encourage you to do the same. There are so many companies that we all do business with that are not members of our Association… many may not be aware that we exist or the magnitude of benefits & services provided. We ask that you share information and invite them to join…or attend an upcoming event to experience the Association firsthand. Membership growth helps us build a stronger association.
Our First Wednesday Member Connections are great introductory events providing members and guests an opportunity to make new business connections. We appreciate the support of members hosting and sponsoring these events. Everyone has enjoyed touring the various showrooms, seeing the latest in products while networking. We will continue to hold these monthly throughout the summer. Utilize our weekly Member News emails and visit our website for upcoming dates and locations.
We recently concluded a successful Spring Parade of Homes…many builders have said it was one of our best Parades in years based on the qualified attendees that are interested in buying and/or building. Planning is underway for our combined Fall Parade of Homes and TOUR of Remodeled Homes to be held October 3-4 & 10-11 showcasing both newly constructed and professionally remodeled homes. Builders & Remodelers…I encourage you to participate with open houses and/or virtual tour only entries. Our company has benefited tremendously from participating…building greater name recognition along with sales and pre-sales. Information remains on the website for six months providing additional marketing exposure after the event. Entry deadline is July 10.
If you are looking for a way to support our Workforce Development initiatives as well as get to know other members…join our Casino Night planning team. This is our signature fund-raising event with all proceeds supporting our Building for the Future Construction Careers Scholarship Fund. There are numerous ways to support this event from sponsorships…to donation of prizes…to purchasing tickets…to serving on the planning team. Your involvement helps us grow and expand our scholarship program. Speaking of scholarships…we are currently accepting applications for the fall semester. If you know of any high school students and/or adults pursing skilled trades training at area community colleges…encourage them to apply. It’s a simple process…our goal is to grow this program each semester…building a stronger workforce.

First Wednesday Member Connections
As we move into the summer months…we are looking forward to staying connected on the First Wednesday afternoon of each month for a time to network with existing, new and prospective members. Upcoming Dates: July 1 - August 5 – September 2
Workforce Development
Casino Night – join our planning team to help us brainstorm new and fun ways to make this annual event the most successful yet…all proceeds support our Building for the Future Scholarship Fund. This year’s event will be held on Thursday, October 29.
Scholarships - applications are currently being accepted for the fall semester. Anyone that might be interested in skilled trades training should apply…including students pursuing carpentry, construction management, electrical, plumbing and HVAC. Application and advisor form on the website.
Fall Parade & TOUR of Remodeled Homes
Planning is underway for our Fall Parade & TOUR of Remodeled Homes…showcasing newly constructed homes and professionally remodeled homes…to be held October 3-4 & 10-11. Entries can be open houses and/ or virtual tour only. Entry deadline is July 10 Advertising deadline is August 1.
Continuing Education
We will again be offering six days of virtual CE courses this fall for general contractors. We encourage you to sign up to take your CE classes through the Association. You can take your required eight hours in one day or split between 2-3 days. Discounted fees for GBA members. Course dates are September 17 – October 1 – October 15 – November 12 –November 20 – November 30
NCHBA Advocacy Day
GBA members joined industry members from across the state to visit with state legislators to discuss regulatory and policy issues that impact housing. Advocacy is a critical component of our mission…providing a voice for industry members. We value and appreciate members willing to assist with these efforts…sharing concerns and issues impacting housing on the local, state and national level. Members will be in Washington June 9-12.
Remodelers Council
If you are involved in residential remodeling…consider joining our Remodelers Council…providing quarterly educational and networking events…along with NAHB Remodelers membership. Our third quarter meeting will be held August 20 …hosted by Pella Windows & Doors.
Professional Women in Building Council
Women in the Building Industry…join us for our upcoming networking events this summer to learn more about our PWB Council. Our quarterly educational program will be held in September in conjunction with National PWB Week.
Young Professionals
Our Under 40 members are looking to hold quarterly networking events…as well as connect at monthly First Wednesdays. Our second quarter gathering will be held in June.
Membership Team
Join our Membership Team and serve as Associate Ambassadors…assisting at membership meetings and events… helping new and existing members make connections with other members.
2025 Annual Awards
ur Annual Awards Celebration was held Wednesday, April 8 featuring an Economic & Housing Forecast provided by Dr. Robert Dietz, Chief Economist of the National Association of Home Builders…sponsored by Pella Windows & Doors. In addition, the Association’s annual awards were presented to the following individuals and organizations for their contributions to the Greensboro Builders Association, the building industry and community.
Eugene Gulledge Award
The Eugene Gulledge Award for Distinguished Service is the highest honor given by the Builders Association. It is named in honor of Eugene Gulledge who founded the Greensboro Builders Association sixty-eight years ago. This award recognizes continuous, outstanding contributions to the Builders Association and the community at large over an extended period.
Kathy Haines, Kathy Haines Homes by eXp Realty received the 2025 Eugene Gulledge Award. Kathy has been involved in the real estate industry for the past 27 years and actively engaged in our Association. She has served on numerous committees and in a variety of leadership roles over the years including our Associates Council, Membership, Parade of Homes, and Construction Careers committees. She is a charter member and past president of our Professional Women in Building Council. Most recently she served as our Associate Vice President on the Board of Directors. Kathy is not only involved within our Association, but extremely active with other industry and community organizations. She understands and values the importance of giving back…and does so throughout our community.
Builder Member of the Year
Brian Disney, Brian Disney Homes received the 2025 Builder Member of the Year Award. Brian has been involved in the building industry for the past sixteen years. He has been actively engaged in our community service initiatives including Raising Roofs…Builders for Habitat; ReBuilding Hope with Community Housing Solutions; and our most recent Hurricane Helene rebuilding trips. Brian has served the past four years on our Finance Committee and Board of Directors, serving as our 2025 President.
Associate Member of the Year
Associate members are our suppliers, trade contractors and service providers. This year two members were recognized for their contributions receiving the 2025 Associate Member of the Year Award.
Sal Cagno, Budget Blinds has been an active member for the past ten years, volunteering to help anywhere needed. He has served on our Board of Directors for six consecutive years and currently chairs our Membership Team.
Michael Legg, The Sherwin-Williams Company has been involved for many years supporting Association initiatives including our Young Professionals and Membership Team…as well as serving the past four years as Secretary on our Executive Committee and Board of Directors.
R & K Custom Homes received the 2025 Lewis Award for utilizing the most Association members in the construction of their Parade homes, working with more than 34 members. This is their ninth consecutive year for Rich and Kathy Dumas to receive this award, recognizing their commitment to conducting business with Association members.

NCHBA STARS Awards
The NCHBA STARS Awards program honors the achievements of home building industry professionals from across North Carolina. Whether it’s a standout custom home, exceptional remodel, or an impactful marketing campaign, there’s a category for you.
With more than 85 categories, the STARS Awards are your opportunity to stand out among your home building peers. New this year is an online platform for submission. Winners will be announced and recognized at the STARS Awards Gala to be held August 31 in Charlotte.
Early Bird registration is $100 per entry - deadline is June 10 . Final registration deadline is July 1 - $150 per entry.
Access to more robust health benefits is possible. By pooling together with other NCHBA organizations, you have access to options that may not be available as an individual employer. The plan is offered to association members that have at least 2 employees (a spouse does not meet the definition of an employee) and whose business is directly related to the home building industry.
Our legislative team continues to have a significant impact on issues impacting our industry. To maintain our effectiveness in Raleigh and locally…we need your support of NC BUILD-PAC. Donations must be made from your personal account. Make sure to select GBA as your local HBA as a percentage of your donation goes to support local candidates.

Parade of Homes
The Parade of Homes is a vital part of our company’s annual planning. Our participation in the Spring Parade has already resulted in two confirmed builds for 2027. If increasing your company’s market share and sales is a priority for your business, I highly encourage all our builder members to participate. It is an excellent way to support your own business and our Association.
