President’s Message
Brian Disney 2025 GBA President
Last fall when Hurricane Helene devastated western North Carolina…our members jumped in to provide immediate assistance and funding. Our Association committed to provide ongoing support as we knew the rebuilding process would be long and tedious. This year we have supported several rebuilding teams in both clean-up and rebuilding efforts. Most recently I participated with several other GBA members to frame two new homes in the Spruce Pine area.
Special thanks to Jim Sandknop for spearheading our rebuilding trips. We would also like to thank everyone who has participated in some way over the past year… from providing supplies, financial contributions, donation of building materials and labor to assist with rebuilding initiatives. There is still much to be done and everyone’s contributions are helping to make a difference.
Throughout October we celebrated Careers in Construction month…we kicked it off with our largest Oktoberfest hosted and sponsored by Ferguson…and concluded with our annual Building for the Future Casino Night. It was a great night for an even greater cause with all proceeds supporting our Construction Careers Scholarship Fund.
Workforce development remains a top priority for our Association and members…we encourage you to get involved in some capacity. Members are needed to assist with career fairs, classroom visits, serve as mentors to students exploring the trades, as well as provide summer internship opportunities.
We are currently accepting applications for our skilled trades scholarships…please share information with anyone you know that might be interested. Application deadline is November 30 for the Spring 2026 semester which starts in January at area community colleges.
We had a successful Fall Parade of Homes that was combined this year with our Tour of Remodeled Homes…providing consumers the opportunity to tour newly constructed as well as renovated homes. In addition, we have continued to see growth in our First Wednesday Member Connections…and have sold out both our fall Golf and Sporting Clay tournaments weeks in advance.
As our councils and committees start planning for 2026…we need member participation and input as to what you would like to see offered in the upcoming year. Most committees will host planning sessions in January and February…I encourage you to select an area of interest and get involved. Not only does it help support our organizational goals…it’s a great way to meet other members and make new business connections.
It has been an honor to serve as your Association president this year…working with our Board of Directors, committees and staff to advance our workforce and membership initiatives. On behalf of all of us…thank you for your continued support and membership investment.
As we close out the year, we hope you will join us for our Holiday Party on Wednesday, December 3 to celebrate a successful year, install our 2026 Board of Directors, and kick off the holiday season!
Building for the Future
W
orkforce development is a major priority for our Association. Through a variety of initiatives, we are working to build greater awareness and interest in careers in construction.
We are all aware of the pressing need for skilled tradespeople. Our scholarship program was established to provide essential financial aid for students and adults pursuing skilled trades training. In an effort to raise money for annual scholarships, we held our inaugural Casino Night in 2023. This has now become an annual fundraising event that everyone looks forward to…with all proceeds supporting our Construction Careers Scholarship Fund.
This year’s Building for the Future Casino Night was held on October 30 at Starmount Forest Country Club with more than 120 attendees experiencing blackjack, roulette, craps and poker. Guests use “funny money” chips for gaming and at the end of the night convert their winnings into raffle tickets for a chance to win valuable prizes such as vacation getaways, sporting event tickets and gift certificates, generously donated by GBA members and community businesses.
Special thanks to our event sponsors, prize donors, volunteers and everyone who attended this year’s event. It was another fun-filled evening supporting a great cause. Your participation is directly contributing to a sustainable resource for training the next generation of construction professionals.
Make sure to check out some of the photos on the next page and on our GBA Members Facebook page.
Construction Careers Scholarship Fund
Due to the growing success of our annual Casino Night along with contributions made directly to our Construction Careers Scholarship Fund …our goal is to annually increase the number of scholarships we provide to support skilled trades training.
Scholarships are awarded for spring, summer and fall semesters. Consideration is given to the applicant’s future plans within the construction industry along with the recommendation of an advisor/teacher. Applications and advisor forms can be found on the GBA website.
We encourage you to share information regarding our scholarship program with students and adults exploring careers in construction…and to consider making a financial contribution to support the growth of our Scholarship Fund.
