GOOD Advance Community Receives $100,000 Donation

Molina Healthcare of Arizona donated $100,000 to Phoenix nonprofit Advance Community to purchase a refrigerated van that will deliver nutritious food to participants of its Food Box Program in underserved communities. The team used the van for the first time on August 8 to deliver 90 handpacked boxes of fresh food to Valleywise patients.

Trump Proposal Would Eliminate Clean Air & Clean Water Funding

According to the Environmental Defense Fund Action, Arizona's water and air quality face serious threats. The state stands to lose 86% of its low-interest water loans and over 90% of funding for water infrastructure projects. The plan would also eliminate the Diesel Emissions Reduction Act, a crucial program that helps to reduce air pollution.

A Beginner’s Guide to Crystals

Crystals are having a moment, and Jamie Inglett, owner of Enchanting Earth in Sedona, explains that if you’re in the market for crystal jewelry or single stones, it’s important to look for those that are mined with both people and the planet in mind. She recommends working with a shop that has full supply chain transparency and to ask where the stones come from.

Connecting Your Commute

How ShareTheRide is changing the way the Valley moves

IImagine if your commute could save you money, reduce stress, and make the air cleaner for everyone. That’s the promise of ShareTheRide, a free app from Valley Metro that’s helping residents across the Valley rethink how they get from point A to point B. Designed to make daily travel smarter, more sustainable, and surprisingly rewarding, it’s quickly becoming a go-to resource for anyone looking to simplify their routine while making a positive impact.

The concept is simple yet powerful: Every ride you take using sustainable transportation — and every choice to work from home — today adds up to a healthier tomorrow. Whether it’s carpooling with coworkers, hopping on a vanpool, taking the bus or light rail, biking, walking, or logging in remotely, each choice reduces congestion, cuts emissions, and creates stronger community connections. The results are already inspiring, more than 3.5 million alternative trips have been logged, accounting for 63 million miles traveled in a cleaner, greener way. That shift has saved $34 million in transportation costs, eliminated 24,000 tons of carbon dioxide, and created the environmental impact of nearly one million trees since inception.

to support flexible work.

Beyond the environmental payoff, ShareTheRide offers an added incentive through its Commute Perks program. By logging just five days of alternative commuting in a single month, users unlock access to hundreds of discounts from both local and national businesses. Perks range from neighborhood dining and attractions to hotel stays, vacations, oil changes, and entertainment. With more than $4,500 in annual savings available, the program makes sustainable commuting just as practical as it is impactful.

What makes ShareTheRide so compelling is how easy it is to use. After creating an account, the app’s matching system helps you discover the commute options that best fit your lifestyle. You can search for others heading in the same direction, plan one-time or regular trips, and even track your impact as you go. The built-in emissions calculator shows exactly how much difference your choices make, while a telework calculator highlights cost and environmental savings for companies looking

For a region as dynamic and fast-growing as the Valley, solutions like ShareTheRide are essential. They ease traffic, save time, reduce costs, and protect the desert air that defines Arizona’s natural beauty. More than just a commute app, it’s a movement toward healthier communities and a more sustainable future.

The journey begins with a single choice, choosing to share the ride. Download the ShareTheRide app on the Apple or Google Play stores today and see how your everyday travel can help transform the Valley for the better. Learn more by visiting www.sharetheride.com.

50,000 Violets Transform Former Staten Island Landfill

The Freshkills Park Alliance is planting 50,000 native violets at the former Staten Island landfill — the world’s largest until it closed in 2001. The project aims to restore habitats and strengthen the ecosystem by providing food for pollinators like monarch butterflies and bees and will be part of a larger park project expected to fully open by 2036. The two-year initiative involves removing invasive species, preparing the soil, and monitoring the success of the planting.

Is Penguin Poop Secretly Good for the Climate?

New research shows that penguin guano (poop) in Antarctica may help cool the planet. Ammonia from massive penguin colonies can spike air concentrations more than 1,000 times normal. This ammonia teams up with ocean compounds to form tiny particles that seed low-level clouds that reflect sunlight, potentially lowering temperatures and providing an unexpected potential solution in climate regulation.

Climate Change Brews Crisis for India’s Tea Industry

Changes in weather are threatening India's tea industry and impacting the global tea trade, valued at over $10 billion annually. According to the Tea Research Association, temperature and rainfall shifts have become "the new normal," causing smaller harvests and reshaping the entire industry.

U.S. Solar Installation Projected to Dwindle

A recent report by the Solar Energy Industries Association and Wood Mackenzie forecasts a 27% reduction in U.S. solar capacity installations between 2026 and 2030. This projected decline is a direct result of President Trump's new tax law, which eliminated key subsidies for solar projects. The report highlights how this policy shift could hinder the growth of clean energy.

Mediterranean Sea Temperatures On the Rise

A recent study led by the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel warns that the Mediterranean Sea is a climate change hotspot, with warming, sea level rise, and acidification occurring faster than the global average. Researchers analyzed 131 studies and found that even moderate warming poses significant risks. July 2025 was the warmest month on record for the Mediterranean Sea.

From Kitchen Lab to Clean Revolution

How one mom's quest for safe diapers built

MamaSuds

MMamaSuds founder and CEO Michelle Smith creates hand-crafted, non-toxic cleaners driven by necessity and designed without compromise or hidden chemicals.

THE BEGINNING

The journey began in the nursery with a newborn, cloth diapers, and an urgent problem Michelle Smith couldn't ignore.

“When my second baby was born, I committed to cloth diapers,” she explains. “I'd invested in the best diapers I could find, but every detergent failed me. Nothing cleaned well, and my daughter kept breaking out in chemical rashes.”

Going back to disposables wasn't an option for Smith. Her kitchen became a research lab where she pored over third-party safety studies — not marketing materials or fear-based blogs — and tested batch after batch. What kept her going was knowing

her family needed something safe that worked. The breakthrough finally came: a formula that cleaned cloth diapers without causing rashes.

“Friends and family started asking for it,” she says. “I realized quickly this wasn't just my problem — it was a gap for a lot of parents.”

Then her family faced a health crisis that intensified everything. When her husband was diagnosed with a brain tumor, Smith's mission took on new urgency. What had started as a quest for better cloth diaper detergent suddenly became about eliminating every possible toxin from their home.

“That's when MamaSuds shifted from being my personal solution to a mission for other families, too,” she says.

PRODUCTS AND SAFETY

Smith's approach to product safety centers on one unwavering principle: if it isn't safe enough for her kids or her dog, it doesn't go into a MamaSuds product. From there, she builds each formula to tackle specific cleaning challenges — whether grease, stains, or soap scum — within that safety framework.

Her ingredient philosophy reflects this commitment to transparency and simplicity. She relies on wellresearched, third-party safety data and the chemistry of real, minimally processed ingredients, starting with olive oil to make genuine castile soap and pairing it with safe mineral cleaners.

“My rule is simple: if I can't make it from scratch myself, I don't use it,” she explains. “No lab-created surfactants. No overprocessed 'plant-derived' additives.”

For Smith, "non-toxic” represents a rigorous standard, not a marketing catchphrase. Her products are built from scratch with ingredients that don't leave residues, disrupt health, or hide behind vague terminology.

“Non-toxic isn't a buzzword here,” she emphasizes. “If it isn't proven safe in independent studies and safe in my own home, it doesn't make the cut.”

This commitment to authenticity sets MamaSuds apart in a crowded marketplace.

“Many 'green' brands still rely on surfactants that have been broken down and rebuilt in labs. By the time they reach the bottle, they're far from their original source. At MamaSuds, we draw the line at overprocessing,” she explains.

Smith avoids synthetics on principle.

“I stay away from synthetics because I don't believe safety should be outsourced to chemical companies,” she says. “Regulations set the floor, but families deserve better than the bare minimum.”

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

When helping consumers navigate product labels, Smith emphasizes one key principle: transparency. Red flags include vague terms like “fragrance” or “surfactant blend” that obscure what's actually in the product. She also cautions that “natural” doesn't automatically mean safe, pointing to improper dilution

of certain essential oils as an example. Her automatic deal-breakers include sulfates, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, and optical brighteners — ingredients she says have no place in truly safe products.

PERFORMANCE WITHOUT COMPROMISE

When faced with skeptics who question whether natural formulas can match conventional cleaners, Smith points to history.

“I remind them that real soap has been cleaning for centuries,” she says. “It doesn't need to be reinvented with synthetics. When paired with the right mineral cleaners, you get powerful cleaning that rinses completely away — without the baggage of overprocessed chemicals.”

Her gold standard for launch is simple: “Two things: the data supports its safety, and I'd use it every single day around my kids and pets.”

BUSINESS AND GROWTH

Running MamaSuds has brought unexpected revelations, particularly around consumer education. People don't just want safe products — they want to understand the science behind that safety, what makes one cleaner different from another, and how to decode ingredient lists. This educational component has become central to the company's mission. Smith knew the brand had achieved real traction “when strangers started tagging MamaSuds on social media saying, 'This is the only cleaner I trust.'” The ongoing challenge is “balancing growth with integrity,” she explains.

LOOKING AHEAD

Smith envisions MamaSuds becoming a nationally recognized name in safe cleaning while preserving its small-batch, fromscratch methodology. The product pipeline includes a scouring scrub, pet care items, and an expanded bar soap collection — all adhering to the same rigorous standards.

For consumers beginning their journey toward safer products, her advice remains practical and encouraging: start with the cleaning product used most frequently, whether that's laundry soap or an all-purpose spray.

“Safe cleaning isn't about being perfect — it's about making progress,” she says. “Every swap matters.”

GOOD Yuma Farmer Finds Sustainable Solutions With Local First Guidance

Green Business Boot Camp opened doors to cost savings

FFarming has appealed to Joseph Dominguez since he was a kid. Born and raised in Yuma, Dominguez doesn’t remember a time that he wasn’t growing plants. After high school, he earned an associate degree in plant science and eventually followed an instructor to Cal Poly to complete his bachelor’s degree in horticulture.

And now, he’s running Hillside Farms, a boutique operation in Yuma that specializes in organic produce. Inside nine greenhouses set across about an acre, Dominguez grows heirloom tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and colorful carrots — commonly referred to as “rainbow” carrots.

To maximize the efficiency of his small farm, and to find ways to extend his growing season, Dominguez participated in the Green Business Boot Camp. The award-winning program, offered by Local First Arizona, guides locally-owned businesses through seven informative sessions designed to offer sustainability-focused solutions that support the goals of each individual business.

In addition to sessions as a cohort, business owners also receive one-on-one coaching that allows them to distinguish which solutions would make the most sense for them to leverage for improved

outcomes for their specific business.

For Dominguez, the Green Business Boot Camp experience introduced him to a pair of federal funding opportunities that could create and foster new community connections, expand his business, and ultimately improve its profitability.

Since Hillside Farms is off-grid, Dominguez relies on generators for electricity to run fans that keep the greenhouse cool. Because the generators run on fuel, they can be both monetarily expensive and also costly to the environment.

In order to potentially mitigate the farm’s climate impact and save money, Dominguez applied for a Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) grant with hopes of installing a 14 kilowatt solar array system. The energy it would produce would allow Hillside Farms to discontinue its use of generators for the greenhouse cooling system.

Joseph Dominguez, Owner at Hillside Farms, tends to his produce.

“We could run more timers and more drip irrigation,” Dominguez said of the potential that the solar array offers. “I could revamp the whole farm.”

Dominguez is still waiting to hear if he received the grant — funded by the Inflation Reduction Act — which would reimburse him for a portion of the costs associated with the solar installation. He’s been told the grant is working its way through the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which administers the funding.

As he awaits information on the status of the REAP grant — many of which have been stalled in recent months by the current administration — he has been able to move forward with a second grant he applied for with the help of Local First Arizona.

That grant, known as the Resilient Food Systems Infrastructure (RFSI) program, provided Hillside Farms with $98,000 to develop a mobile kitchen.

“It’s kind of like a food truck,” Dominguez said.

He plans to use the mobile kitchen to extend his reach into the Yuma farming community and teach others how to process local food, from pickling to sauces. The REAP grant would also help him to provide more produce earlier in the year.

“I could build cold storage,” he said. “You’re picking 200 pounds of zucchini in a day, and you can’t move it. It’s got to go to cold storage and get metered out.” www.hillsidefarmsaz.com

Denim With a Point

Up-and-coming fashion designer Sammi Satori creates Material Girl-inspired denim bullet bra ensemble to win eco-fashion competition

FFor the past few years, FABRIC’s reFABRICate Fashion Show has challenged designers to craft stylish, upcycled pieces made from one of fashion’s most unsustainable materials: denim. In April, FABRIC teamed up with Tempe Marketplace and Threadz to repurpose used denim into stylish, runway-ready creations.

Fashion designer, stylist, and ASU FIDM student Sammi Satori took home this year's "RunzWithScissors" award at the reFABRICate Fashion Show. Her winning piece was an updated, sustainable take on Madonna’s famed Bullet Bra. To create the stylish top — which features the famous cone silhouette and sleeves — Satori used nine pairs of preloved Levi’s jeans and one denim jacket. Her design was inspired after seeing a photo of the

original garment, and she even had the opportunity to meet its creator, Angela Dean, at a school event.

“Through that connection, I was able to reimagine the iconic silhouette into an original, sustainable design that reflects my own creative vision,” says Satori.

The award is deeply important to her. She entered the contest about a year after her grandfather, who encouraged her to pursue her dreams, passed away.

Photos by Keegan Choffat

“When I committed to this challenge, I didn’t realize how difficult it would be to construct each piece while also managing 18 credit hours at ASU FIDM in Los Angeles. There were many moments when I thought about giving up, but I drew strength from the words and love of those who supported and believed in me,” she says. “To me, this award represents resilience and the power of perseverance.”

Satori’s focus on sustainable design is woven deep into her personal history. She’s been redesigning garments since she was a child. She grew up in a small Texas town, and much of her wardrobe came from garage stores and thrift stores. The petite designer often altered garments to make them fit her body better.

After finishing her degree, she intends to release a collection crafted entirely out of repurposed Levi’s. With her work, she aims to inspire others to imagine the potential of used clothing.

“My main focus is working with ‘preloved’ denim — rescuing, repurposing, and reimagining it into fresh, innovative designs,” she says. “For me, it’s not just about creating garments, but about giving fabric new life and inspiring others to see the potential in what already exists.”

Wildflowers in the Arizona Desert

Seeds of spring are sown in the fall

TThere’s a special kind of magic in planting wildflower seeds in the fall. I remember spreading tiny seeds across a bare patch of my new desert landscaping, feeling the anticipation of what would come.

At first, nothing seemed to happen. Then, after some patience and a little rain, green shoots emerged, slowly stretching toward the sun. By February and March, the landscape burst into color — bright blues, golds, purples, and oranges painting the yard in vibrant patterns.

FALL IS THE PERFECT TIME TO PLANT WILDFLOWERS IN THE SONORAN DESERT

For the best results, sow seeds from October through mid-December, as native drought-adapted plants lie dormant until winter rains awaken them. Once sprouted, they grow steadily, using little water, until spring warmth brings them to full bloom. As a bonus, native species like Arroyo Lupine, Desert Bluebell, Mexican Gold Poppy, and Owl’s Clover support hummingbirds, butterflies, and solitary bees.

PLANTING WILDFLOWERS IS SURPRISINGLY SIMPLE

Mix your seeds with a bit of soil or fine compost before spreading them — this helps distribute them evenly and gives them a small boost of moisture to get started. Choose a sunny spot with at least six

hours of direct sunlight, lightly rake the soil, scatter the seed-soil mix, rake them in lightly, and water carefully.

Early care includes occasional watering if rain is scarce and removing competing weeds. Once established, these plants should thrive with minimal effort and often reseed themselves for the next year. For a longer-lasting display, pair annuals with perennials like Blackfoot Daisy, Desert Marigold, Desert Senna, and Firecracker Penstemon. This combination extends bloom time and creates a dynamic, ever-changing landscape, influenced by rainfall, temperature, and visiting wildlife.

WILDFLOWERS HAVE A PURPOSE

Wildflowers do more than beautify — they support pollinators, encourage biodiversity, and offer a simple, sustainable way to embrace desert gardening. The joy of watching a seed sprout, grow, and finally burst into bloom is an experience every gardener should savor.

This fall, grab a packet of native wildflower seeds and plant a bit of wonder in your yard. Learn more at www.wateruseitwisely.com/wildflowers.

BEST SUSTAINABLE WINE GROWER

Page Springs Cellars

Since its founding in 2004, Page Springs Cellars has been an Arizona leader in sustainable winemaking, driven by a guiding principle: to create exceptional wines while minimizing environmental impact. For founding winemaker Eric Glomski, this commitment is not a side project; it’s a constant journey woven into every daily choice.

At Page Springs, electricity comes from a 125-kilowatt solar system, now backed by new Tesla batteries for added resilience. The team also operates a robust wastewater treatment system to protect local water sources and a comprehensive composting program that diverts kitchen scraps and winemaking byproducts from the landfill.

Over the past year, Page Springs has introduced new solutions like bird-deterrent lasers in the vineyard, which protect fruit without harming wildlife. By consistently finding better ways to farm and make wine that respects the land, Page Springs Cellars proves that environmental responsibility can be both a mission and a success.

In 2019, Compost Crowd announced a pilot program for residential collection in Flagstaff. As of last year, the company had diverted nearly 600 tons of organic material from the landfill.

Most recently, Compost Crowd partnered with Mill to extend combined services to office spaces throughout Northern Arizona, with the City of Sedona becoming the first to adopt this program. Kaua‘i’s Crown Jewel

The 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay is a sustainable sanctuary

on the island’s North Shore

PPerched high on a verdant hillside on the North Shore of Hawai‘i’s Garden Isle, visitors to the 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay are surrounded by nature at nearly every turn. The hotel’s commitment to sustainability — as with all in the 1 Hotels portfolio — is also ever-present, with its location creating the brand’s most stunning and successful integration with its surroundings to date.

In 2020, following a purchase by Starwood Resorts, the St. Regis Princeville Resort closed to undergo a monumental transformation. European-style columns, oversized slabs of marble, and outdated hues gave way to 1 Hotel’s signature biophilic design, reopening in February 2023.

SUSTAINABILITY

The resort’s new owners salvaged nearly 145 tons of existing equipment and materials and donated much of what couldn’t be used to the Kaua‘i community. Construction utilized locally sourced and reclaimed

materials throughout, including teak joists, lava stone, and recycled clay for walls, ceilings, and countertops.

An impressive LEED-certified property with sustainability initiatives that go far beyond standard hotel practices like low-flow water fixtures and LED lighting, the resort implements advanced energysaving strategies like green roofs for increased insulation, passive cooling, low-energy glazing on windows, energy-recovery HVAC, and advanced monitoring, all designed to cut annual energy costs by about 20%. Water conservation is maximized through high-efficiency plumbing systems, native

plant use throughout the property, and a 7,400-gallon rainwater harvesting system used for irrigation, saving roughly 3.5 million gallons of water annually. Waste management is central to the hotel’s sustainability mission, helping to drive a circular economy within the community. The resort strives to eliminate single-use plastic by using reusable or fully compostable foodware, which is processed locally into soil amendments for the rooftop garden. Food waste is donated to a nearby farm for pig feed and local haulers manage separate recycling streams. All revenue from redeemable materials is donated to a neighborhood elementary school. The property is also pursuing TRUE Zero Waste certification with a target goal of diverting over 90% of total waste from the landfill.

GUEST ROOMS

Rooms at the 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay are an exquisite blend of uncompromising luxury and deep comfort, featuring majestic views of the rugged, emerald-hued Hihimanu, Namolokama, and Mamalahoa mountain ranges rising from Hanalei Bay’s crescent-shaped shoreline. The view itself is like medicine — a balm for frazzled nerves, an invitation into stillness and presence. Enjoying a cup of locally grown mamaki sage tea while watching the sunlight dance along the crests of rhythmic waves in the morning, or savoring the way the mist slowly rolls across the striated mountain peaks after a gentle rain in the afternoon were among my favorite ways to soak in the profound tranquility of the island.

water spout for refilling complimentary aluminum Path water bottles.

The bathroom inside our 820-square-foot Ocean View Studio Suite was impressive. A striking puka lava rock accent wall above the vanity flowed naturally into a glass-enclosed shower complete with a rainfall showerhead and separate natural stone soaking tub. Adjustable, louvered wooden blinds provided a nearly floor-to-ceiling view of the ocean and mountains, inviting nature directly into one of life’s most private rituals for a secluded moment of personal care.

DINING

This sense of connection to nature is consciously built into the design of every one of the resort’s 252 guest rooms and suites. Basalt flooring, local artwork, and limewashed walls the color of wet sand are complemented by a bevy of live plants that surround guests in understated elegance. Handwoven lighting, reclaimed wood ceilings, and custom-woven rattan wall panels stylishly emphasize the island vibe.

Thoughtful, sustainable touches were always within reach, including 100% recycled paper hangers, cups and carafes made from recycled wine bottles, recycled cork coasters, natural wood pens, and even a filtered-

The dining at 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay is a celebration of hyper-local, sustainable cuisine, with all six venues certified as Ocean Friendly Restaurants by The Surfrider Foundation. Menus are primarily crafted from seasonal ingredients sourced from Kaua‘i and the resort’s rooftop organic garden. The culinary experience ranges from 1 Kitchen’s indulgent breakfast buffet and impressive dinner menu of fresh fish and local vegetable sides, to the Welina Terrace featuring Japanese-inspired shared plates, exceptional craft cocktails, and the island’s best sunset views. For fast, casual fare, guests can visit The Sandbox for poolside dining or Neighbors for healthy grab-and-go options.

guide and golf pro, Andrew, was exceptionally knowledgeable about the local flora and fauna, along with the history of the area. Notably, the club is a leader in environmental stewardship and uses salt-tolerant paspalum turfgrass, which is ideal for Hawai‘i’s climate. The club is committed to organic maintenance standards, utilizing sodium chloride for weed eradication, and adhering to a strict companywide policy against the use of glyphosate.

The Lydgate Farms chocolate tour is a guest favorite, offering a look at the process of transforming raw cacao into finished, fine chocolate that rivals the best in the world. Founded in 2008, the farm is a model of regenerative land management. To keep carbon underground, workers do not till the soil. Instead, they foster a diverse agroforestry system with integrated root systems and use organic fertilizer to naturally provide necessary soil nutrients.

We concluded our stay in Kaua‘i with an unforgettable dinner cruise. Nestled into a little nook on a 65-foot Star sailing yacht at sunset, my husband and I enjoyed a gorgeous three-course meal featuring locally sourced ingredients, set against the breathtaking expanse of the Na Pali Coast. Yet, Captain Andy’s is known for more than providing spectacular experiences. The company is a certified Surfrider Foundation Ocean Friendly Restaurant, meaning all foodware is reusable, and no Styrofoam or single-use plastics (straws only upon request) are allowed on board. The company further demonstrates its commitment to the environment with a strict dockside recycling policy and is recognized as a Hawai‘i Tourism Authority Qurator Elite Tier operator.

She Said: I’ve been on a ghost tour before, but I was especially excited to learn about the history of this city that I wasn’t too familiar with. Every tour is different! Am I a paranormal enthusiast? Well, you could say I’m in the “Mulder” camp when it comes to ghosts. I want to believe.

I could tell that others on the tour felt the same — including our host — which created a fun vibe. Most people were from out of town, and it was interesting to hear where they were visiting from. Our host did a great job getting everyone acquainted before we spent the next two hours together.

The time flew by as we listened to fascinating stories at a hotel, pub, music venue, apartments, restaurant, and even a parking lot. Surprisingly, the parking lot was the creepiest. Our EMF (electromagnetic field) detectors flashed red — the max level — the whole time we were there. Sure, it could have been interference, but they hadn’t gone off like that at any other stop. I also felt a tingling in my legs while standing in the lot itself, where the host said he had felt the same — but much stronger — on previous tours. He stays on the sidewalk now.

My favorite stop was an elegant 1912 hotel, complete with Italian marble floors, Austrian crystal chandeliers, and black walnut banisters, and fireplace. It was gorgeous — like stepping back in time! Oh, and of course, the builder supposedly haunts the bar, though he didn’t make an appearance (boooo!).

Our guide wrapped up the tour with lighthearted comments, encouraging us not to fear the inevitable (aka kicking the bucket). He even shared his “ghost plan” to haunt the local bookstore — and told us to say “hi” if we ever see a comic book floating through the air. Will do!

Ghost Adventures

October is such a fun month! The cooler temps and changing leaves encourage us to get outside, snap some fall photos and visit the pumpkin patch. But what about an activity of a different nature — ghost tour, anyone? Even if you aren’t a paranormal enthusiast, these tours include fascinating history that even locals may not know. You can find a tour in several Arizona cities, including Jerome, Scottsdale, Phoenix, Tucson, and Mesa.

HeHe Said: We went walking around our city late one night, when our eyes beheld an eerie sight. A ghost appeared and began to rise, and gave us all a big surprise.

I’m kidding, of course. We didn’t see any ghosts on our ghost tour (I want my money back!). Please pardon my sarcasm. Full disclosure: I am a ghost skeptic. Unlike the kid from The Sixth Sense, I have never seen — nor do I expect to see — dead people.

That said, I enjoyed this tour more than I thought I would. I liked the spooky stories and the history lessons, and our guide was great at spinning tales that kept things interesting. If he’d been a terrible storyteller, we basically would have just paid someone to walk us around parts of town we usually avoid.

We learned about several downtown buildings — which ones were speakeasies with tragic stories, haunted hotels with guests who never left, and parking lots that were once Indian burial grounds. I’ll be street parking next time I’m in the area, thanks.

Overall, we had a great night. We met some new friends, shared some laughs, got our steps in, learned a lot about our city — and nobody got slimed.
