It will be Kennedy s first appearance in nearly a year before the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee which Cassidy chairs The senator who is up for re-election cast the key vote to confirm Kennedy last year after securing a series of promises from Kennedy, including that he would preserve federal vaccine recommendations and regularly appear before the committee

How can we solve the Black maternal health crisis if we can’t say ‘Black’?
by Kay Wicker, The Grio
That question went from rhetorical to real on Friday April 17, when Rep Summer Lee asked it outright during a committee hearing with the U S Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr
“Your agency told programs to remove a list of nearly 200 words and phrases from their funding applications, including the word Black ’ Do you have an idea of how we could solve the Black maternal mortality crisis if we can’t say ‘Black’?” she asked as she grilled him intensely on the matter

Undeclared Wars
I have fought in wars
Undeclared as wars
Yet threatening life and loves
I have fought in wars
Not as soldier
Declaring allegiance
But as warrior
Defending a culture
I have fought in wars
None of my choice But forced upon me
To rescue the captives
Also forced to war
I have fought in wars
Against weapons
Dividing blood kin
Stripping my truths
Demeaning my value
I have fought in wars
First visited upon my ancestors I fight the same wars
Plaguing our youth
Not yet warriors But thrust into wars
I have fought in wars
Undeclared as wars Yet embraced as battles Giving rise to victory
As ours through struggle I still fight in wars
Declaring my self

T he Postal Ser vice should be funded: r ain, snow, sleet, or stalemate
By Marc Morial, Presi-
dent and CEO, National Urban League
(TriceEdneyWire com)There is an institution older than the United States itself that is now fighting for its survival, and too many people in power are watching it happen without lifting a finger
The United States Postal Service was founded in 1775, a year before the Declaration of Independence Benjamin Franklin was the first Postmaster General It has survived wars depressions technological upheavals, and the death of the handwritten letter It has never missed a day of service Today it is being quietly bled out and the silence from Congress is its own kind of crisis
The Postmaster General has warned lawmakers that the agency is at a "critical juncture" and will run out of cash in less than a year unless Congress allows it to borrow more money "At our current rate, we ll be out of cash in less than 12 months So in about a year from now the postal service would be unable to deliver the mail," Postmaster General David Steiner said before a House subcommittee This is not a hypothetical USPS suspended employer pension contributions in April 2026, pausing roughly $200 million every two weeks to free $2 5 billion in cash just to keep the lights on This is the slow unraveling of an institution that helped build the American middle class
The Postal Service was never just a place to buy stamps It was infrastructure It was connectivity before broadband It was the original equalizer, guaranteeing that a family in rural Mississippi and a family in Manhattan received the same service at the same price It built a path into the middle class for generations of Black Americans who could not access employment in the private sector Postal work was union work stable work, dignified work, one of the first federal employers to hire Black men and
By Julianne Malveaux (TriceEdneyWire com) -
People keep talking about the future of work as if it is something waiting just around the corner robots taking jobs artificial intelligence transforming industries, entire occupations disappearing overnight I’m speaking soon at a conference on this very topic, and the more I think about it, the more convinced I am that we are asking the wrong question The future of work is not something waiting decades in the distance For millions of Americans it has already arrived and it looks a lot like insecurity
women at a meaningful scale In city after city, the post office was not just a government building; it was a community anchor
USPS continues to operate its universal delivery network, visiting 168 million addresses, six days a week It remains the largest mail service in the world delivering nearly 40 percent of mail sent globally And it does all of this while operating under congressional mandates that private competitors never face including the requirement to serve every address in America at a uniform price, regardless of how remote or expensive that delivery is
The financial crisis did not appear overnight USPS has lost money almost every fiscal year since 2007, with net losses totaling approximately $109 billion from fiscal years 2007 through 2024
Much of that loss traces back to a 2006 law that forced the agency to prefund 75 years of retiree health benefits in just 10 years a burden placed on no other federal agency or private company Congress created the problem Congress has been slow to solve it And now, rather than stepping up with the legislative action that every credible financial analysis says is required too many members are standing aside while the institution crumbles
Privatizing the USPS could mean the end of guaranteed mail service to every American address, leaving many rural customers without the deliveries they depend on For communities of color the elderly people with disabilities and low-income families who depend on the Postal Service for medications, government benefits, and financial correspondence this is not an inconvenience It is a rupture in the basic terms of citizenship
And this is where the stakes become undeniable, because we are not having this conversation about postal funding in a vacuum We are having it in an election year, with a Supreme Court case sitting on the docket that could make the reliability of mail delivery a matter of life or death for American democracy The Supreme Court is expected to issue a ruling in Watson v Republican N a t i o n a l Committee months before the November midterm elections
numbers don’t tell the whole story With several measures of labor underutilization, the unemployment rate looks more like 8 percent and as high as 13 percent for African Americans
For decades Americans believed that education hard work and loyalty to an employer would lead to stability A job was supposed to provide more than wages It was supposed to offer a path a way to build a life, raise a family, and eventually retire with dignity
That bargain is quietly disappearing
Many of the fastestgrowing occupations in the American economy are in what economists politely call the care sector: home health aides, childcare workers nursing assistants and elder care providers
The latest employment report shows the economy adding 178 000 jobs in March, with unemployment holding at about 4 3 percent Economists look at those numbers and pronounce the labor market strong But statistics do not pay rent or buy groceries Economists love numbers Workers live with consequences Talk to workers and you hear something different: a growing sense that the rules of work are changing and not necessarily for the better And the surface
These workers do the labor that allows the rest of the economy to function They care for children support people with disabilities and help aging Americans live with dignity
Yet the economy rewards that labor with wages that barely sustain the people doing it The median pay for home health and personal care aides is about $16 an hour roughly $32,000 a year for full-time work Try paying rent transportation and groceries on that in most American cities An economy that pays caregivers poverty wages is telling you exactly what it values
More than four million Americans now work in these jobs, making caregiv-
ing one of the largest occupations in the country Demand will only grow as the population ages Within the next decade Americans over the age of 65 will outnumber children for the first time in our history
That demographic reality reveals something uncomfortable about the American economy The work that sustains human life caring for children tending to the sick supporting the elderly is treated as low-value labor
Meanwhile, sectors far removed from those everyday needs capture extraordinary wealth
At the same time, the middle-class professional job that once symbolized stability is showing signs of fragility Workers in media, technology, universities and nonprofits increasingly face layoffs with little warning Contract work replaces permanent employment People who once relied on one job now patch together two or three to stay afloat
Roughly five percent of American workers now hold multiple jobs often because one paycheck no longer stretches far enough
Artificial intelligence may accelerate these trends, but technology alone is not the story The deeper issue is how our economy values work In the emerging labor market, the jobs that generate the greatest social value often generate the least financial reward

Look at the world around you The sun rises on time
The seasons turn A seed becomes a tree A child grows into a person who can think and love and choose
Some people see all this and see an accident Others see a plan There is an old idea that helps explain the second view If you find a watch on the ground, you know someone made it The gears, the hands, the careful design a watch does not build itself If the world is even more complex than a watch, doesn’t it follow that someone, or something made the world too?
I believe it does And if there is a maker, we have a job Take care of what we were given That job is older than any law In the Bible, before the Ten Commandments, God places people
The case centers on the Republican Party's challenge to Mississippi's law allowing mail ballots postmarked by Election Day to be counted if they arrive within 5 business days afterward Twenty-nine states plus Washington D C , count at least some timely cast ballots if received within a brief window after Election Day
The National Urban League filed an amicus brief defending those grace periods We did so because we understand what is at stake Black, Hispanic, and Native American voters encounter the greatest barriers to in-person voting due to greater polling reloca-
Black women understand this reality better than most For generations they have participated in the labor force at high rates, sustaining families and communities while navigating an economy that rarely rewarded their labor with equal pay or equal opportunity What many Americans are discovering today about instability and undervalued labor is something Black women have been managing for decades The future of work is not being shaped by technology alone It is being shaped by power So when we talk about the future of work, we should be clear about what is really at stake The question is not whether machines will replace humans The question is whether work in America will continue to drift toward instability while the most essential labor remains the least rewarded The future of work is already here And unless we rethink what work should provide stability, dignity, and the ability to build a life we may discover that the economy we are building works very well for profits, but not nearly as well for the people whose labor sustains it

T his Ear th Day, Humanity is failing our “Fir st Commandment”
in a garden and tells them to take care of it Jewish, Christian and Muslim teachings all share this story The first rule is simple Protect the garden That is truly our first commandment
We are not doing a good job
This Earth Day the proof is everywhere Scientists now say the pace of species loss today is faster than anything Earth has seen in the 66 million years since the dinosaurs disappeared They call this the sixth mass extinction The first five were caused by forces no one could control giant volcanoes sudden ice ages, the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs This one is different This one is caused by us Monarch butterflies are disappearing Right whales are almost gone Forests are being cut down Rivers are choking on pollution Animals our children should grow up knowing are vanishing now Earth Day should make us ask a bigger question than whether we recycle It should ask how we get the energy we need without destroying the world we live in The story of human power starts with fire When our ancestors learned to make it, everything changed Fire kept us warm, cooked our food,
tion and removal Mail vot-
ing is not a convenience for these communities It is often their most reliable path to the ballot Now consider what happens if the Court guts those grace periods just as the Postal Service is too underfunded to guarantee timely mail delivery Voters who rely on mail voting, such as military and overseas voters, voters with disabilities, and older voters would face the most significant impacts if postmark deadlines are struck down The two crises connect A weakened Postal Service cannot guarantee that a ballot mailed on Election Day will arrive within the
gave us light at night, and let us travel into colder lands Fire made us who we are But it also started a pattern Every time humans found a new source of power we paid for it by taking something from the natural world
History shows where this leads Ireland was once covered in forests So was Iceland So were the hills of Greece, the cedars of Lebanon, and many islands in the Mediterranean One by one, the trees came down for ships for fuel for farms, for factories Islands tell this story most clearly because their edges are easy to see You can run out of trees on an island in a way you cannot run out of sky What islands did to themselves over centuries, we are now doing to the planet The fuels changed The pattern stayed the same First wood Then whale oil Then coal Then oil and gas Each one helped people live better Each one also caused harm Forests were cleared Whales were nearly hunted to death Mountains were blown apart Oil leaked into our land and water
These fuels are called finite That means they run out And the damage often does not heal A forest can grow back in a lifetime A dead whale cannot come back A species that has
shrinking window the courts may allow The math is simple, and the intent is legible When you hollow out the institution and restrict the deadline simultaneously you do not need to prevent people from voting You just make their votes disappear in the mail Congress must act Not eventually Now Increase USPS's borrowing authority Stabilize its finances Restore the workforce that has been cut Protect the institution that has served this country since before it was a country The National Urban League has spent more
gone extinct is gone forever But the same world that gave us these fuels also gave us better ones The sun The wind The tides The waves These are called infinite, because they never run out They are not perfect Nothing humans build is But there is a huge difference between energy that can be made cleaner over time and energy that destroys what we can never get back So return to the watchmaker I believe there is one And if you believe there is a watchmaker too ask yourself this: wouldn’t our watchmaker want us to move from the finite to the infinite as quickly as we can? Surely the maker did not put the sun in the sky, the wind on the plains and the tides in the sea just for decoration They were put there for us to find and use, when we were ready The fuels we burn were a beginning The clean ones are what we were meant to grow into To move from one to the other, as fast as we can is not just smart It is doing what we were asked to do
Ben Jealous is a professor of practice at the University of Pennsylvania and former president and CEO of the NAACP
than 115 years fighting for the full citizenship of Black America We have fought at the ballot box, in the courts, and in the halls of Congress We know that democracy is not threatened only by dramatic, obvious assaults Sometimes it is threatened by budget shortfalls by inaction and by the slow erosion of the infrastructure that connects people to their government and their rights Either way, this November, the people will have something to say about who chose to stand by while the mail stopped running
T he Resistance needs r ent money
By Jasmyne A Cannick | Our Weekly News
F Trump has become cultural currency
YG made it a hook
Timelines on fire
Group chats activated
Think pieces flying
Boycotts declared between brunch reservations
But here s the part nobody wants to talk about:
If you really want to hit back at Trump and his administration you’re going to have to open your wallet
Yes Your wallet
The right understands something the left keeps pretending not to: Power requires infrastructure and infrastructure requires money MAGA treats funding as a duty not a debate
That’s how movements survive
While we re busy tweeting clever drags, this administration is busy strangling the very institutions that keep marginalized communities informed organized and sane
The non-profits
The community radio stations
The grassroots advocacy groups
The arts organizations
The “DEI” programs corporations have suddenly decided are “too political ”
The same spaces people claim to love? They’re bleeding
Funding cut
Corporate sponsors spooked
Foundations nervous
Boards scared to be seen as “too aligned ” And a lot of folks who claim to be in the resistance are watching it happen like it s a documentary
Let s be clear about something
When Trump and his people attack “DEI ” they aren’t attacking an HR training slideshow
They’re attacking infrastructure
They re attacking the pipelines that create leadership
The community outlets that tell the truth
The organizations that train young activists
The legal funds that fight voter suppression
The local stations that broadcast information when mainstream outlets won t
They’re going after the ecosystem
And if that ecosystem collapses because we were too comfortable to sustain it?
That’s not just unfortunate
That s a win for them
And before someone says Well I m not wealthy ”
Nobody asked you to be
This isn’t about writing six-figure checks with your name engraved on a plaque This is about participation
Five dollars
Ten dollars
Twenty-five if you can swing it
Recurring if you’re serious
The same way people find money for streaming services, concert tickets, sneakers brunch and DoorDash convenience fees
you can find a small
consistent amount to keep the institutions you claim to care about alive
Movements are not funded by billionaires alone They re sustained by ordinary people deciding something matters enough to contribute to it
You don’t have to be rich
You just have to be invested
And if enough regular people decide to show up financially even modestly it replaces what corporations pulled back in fear
Collective power isn’t theoretical It’s arithmetic
You cannot claim you’re fighting authoritarianism while letting the last independent platforms standing quietly suffocate
You cannot say you care about democracy while refusing to financially support the institutions that defend it
You cannot shout resistance and then treat community organizations like optional subscriptions
Trump doesn t need to shut these places down if we let them starve
That’s the part that should make people uncomfortable
Because outrage is free
Infrastructure is not
If you re furious about corporations backing away from DEI then replace the funding
If you’re angry about grants disappearing, then become the grant
If you care about independent Black media, immigrant advocacy, LGBTQ youth spaces women-led nonprofits then treat them like the essential services they are
Set up recurring donations
Sponsor an event
Buy the membership
Underwrite the program
Share the fundraising links
Actually show up
Not just when it’s trending
Sustained support is what keeps movements alive Not hashtags
And let s be honest some of these organizations are the last places holding the line They’re preserving culture Protecting voting rights Fighting book bans Providing legal help Training young leaders Giving people somewhere to land when the news cycle feels like psychological warfare
Letting them fold because corporations got scared is not resistance
It’s surrender dressed up as inconvenience
If Trump and his allies want to weaken communities by choking off resources and we shrug because it’s not personally convenient to give $25 a month?
That’s not sticking it to anyone
That’s letting them win quietly
You want to fight?
Fund the fight
Because the loudest statement you can make in this moment isn’t another post
It’s keeping the lights on where it matters

Senate Sketches #2026.....by Hank Sander s Ain’t Gon Study War No Mor e
“Ain’t Gon Study War No More” is a refrain in an old African American Spiritual Its correct name is “Down by the Riverside” or “Gon Lay Down My Burdens It was conceived and sung by enslaved people It is a powerful song about stopping war It was also used as an anti-war protest song during the Vietnam War Ain’t Gon Study War No More
This refrain has been popping up in my spirit nearly every time I turn on the television news these days My spirit is in great pain because our country is not only “studying war” but “waging war” like never before Our Country is not just fighting in wars but starting wars and launching war-like activities Ain t Gon Study War No More
In about a year of President Trump’s taking office The United States of America had bombed eight countries: (1) Venezuela, (2) Syria, (3) Nigeria, (4) Yemen, (5) Iraq, (6) Somalia, (7) Ecuador, and (8) Iran (twice) The U S bombed numerous boats in the Caribbean Sea around the coast of Venezuela killing more than 125 beings, all civilians Ain’t Gon Study War No More
The Obama Administration negotiated an agreement with Iran that prevented Iran from producing nuclear weapons for an extended period of time It took two years to negotiate the agreement Not only did the U S sign the agreement but Great Britain, France, Germany China Russia and other countries also signed it President Trump tore up the multinational agreement in his first term He could have tried to negotiate a better agreement, but instead he unilaterally tore up the agreement Ain t Gon Study War No More
The U S is currently engaged in war against Iran
The U S was in negotiations with Iran concerning its nuclear program on June 2, 2025 The U S had been in these negotiations for some weeks when it suddenly bombed Iran in the midst of negotiations
Then the U S did the very same thing by bombing Iran on February 28 2026 in the midst of ongoing negotiations Ain’t Gon Study War No More
This current war against Iran has impacted the entire world because it is preventing numerous counties from obtaining one-fifth of the oil and other resources needed to operate their economies The price of gas has shot up The price of derivatives such as fertilizer has gone up The price of food has gone up and will continue to rise The price of so many other things shot up because of increased fuel costs for transportation Ain’t Gon Study War No More
The U S imposed a naval blockade, which is a war measure against Venezuela It imposed a blockade, a war measure against Cuba It imposed a blockade a war measure against Iran It has threatened to bomb and impose a blockade on Columbia, another South American country Both of these are
war measures Ain’t Gon Study War No More
The U S bombed a school, among many other places, killing more than 160 young Iranian girls Some 31,000 bombs were rained down on Iran by the United States and Israel They dubbed this as the “Epic Fury ” The very name suggests more than a war of necessity It suggests a war of fury Ain’t Gon Study War No More
President Trump declared: A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again unless Iran accepted the socalled U S peace proposal which was really a surrender proposal (Iran’s civilization is approximately 7,000 years old) This is a declaration of an intention to commit genocide Trump has also declared that Iran must “surrender unconditionally” or else Ain’t Gon Study War No More
The Trump Administration also supported Israel’s massive bombing of Gaza Nearly every building was bombed including hospitals schools homes etc Israel also imposed blockades that prevented or limited food water medicine and other necessities of life from reaching the Palestinian people in Gaza Without U S resources and active support, these blockades and bombings would not have been possible to this extent Ain’t Gon Study War No More
Now President Trump is threatening to bomb “every bridge and power plant” in Iran If he does this, Iranian people will be in the dark Iranian people will not be able to travel from one place to another Iranian people not just the government will suffer greatly in many ways Ain’t Gon Study War No More
Merely stating the intention to destroy the whole civilization in Iran violates international law Simply stating the intention to destroy every power plant and bridge in Iran violates international law Bombing people in boats off the coast of Venezuela on the theory that they may be drug operatives violates international law If they have drugs arrest them and try them in courts of law The United States is currently more of an outlaw, implementing the law of jungle with brute force Ain t Gon Study War No More
Every one of us is impacted by these war and war-like activities The current Iranian War was costing the U S up to two billion dollars ($2,000,000,000 00) a day, resulting is a current total estimated cost of $50 billion Now the Trump Administration is seeking half a trillion additional dollars for the U S War Department (defense) budget
President Trump has publicly stated that the U S cannot pay for health care or childcare because the money is needed for war Thirteen U S soldiers have died and more than 400 have been injured Ain’t Gon Study War No More
The United States started this war against Iran without consulting any of its NATO Allies Then Trump
demanded that the NATO countries join in the war When they chose not to join in, he verbally attacked them and the NATO Alliance President Trump started the war against Iran without the approval of the Republican-majority Congress He has also threatened to take Greenland from Denmark by force and to make Canada the “51st State of the United States ” He has weakened the NATO Alliance, which has limited war for 70 years He has destabilized the entire world Now more wars are likely Ain’t Gon Study War No More
The Trump Administration has changed the name of the “U S Defense Department” to the U S War Department The name change symbolizes a warlike mind set not a def e n s e - o f = c o u n t r y approach not to speak of a peace approach Ain’t Gon Study War No More
President Trump has attacked the Pope, the leader of the 1 5-billion-member Catholic Church The Pope just spoke out against war in general and for peace in general The Pope never mentioned President Trump’s name However President Trump attacked the Pope, falsely stating that the Pope stated that he wants Iran to have nuclear weapons President Trump even started a verbal war with the Pope based on lies It just never stops and keeps getting worse Ain’t Gon Study War No More

EarthTalk®
From the Editors of EThe Environmental Magazine
Dear EarthTalk: Why were several new plastic bag bans reversed during COVID? Have they been reinstated (or expanded or forgotten) in the meantime? --
Missy G , New York, NY
Plastic bag bans are policies and laws that prohibit or limit the use of single-use plastic bags, part of an at-
tempt to curb and reduce plastic waste and environmental degradation Before COVID-19, many cities and states had implemented such bans to mitigate pollution, protect wildlife and address the plastic crisis With the world wasting about 400 million tons of
plastic yearly plastic waste and pollution have become critical issues These bans aimed to switch customers to reusable alternatives like cloth bags Plastic bags are among the most common pollutants found in landfills and oceans taking hundreds of years to fully decompose
Trump also announced his picks for three top health positions: Sean Slovenski, a health care industry executive, as the CDC's chief operating officer; Dr Jennifer Shuford, commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Services as the agency's chief medical director; and Dr Sara Brenner principal deputy commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration as senior counselor for public health for Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr
"This is a team with great potential if political interference and the self interest of the secretary of health doesn’t hamper their ability to deliver for the health of the country," said Dr Demetre Daskalakis, former head of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases Daskalakis resigned from the agency in August in protest of Kennedy's firing of former CDC director Susan Monarez
In a post on X Kennedy thanked Trump for nominating Schwartz and said he looked forward "to working together to restore trust accountability and scientific integrity "
The CDC has been without a permanent director since August
The Trump administration’s first pick former Rep Dave Weldon of Florida was pulled in March 2025 after Republican senators signaled he wouldn’t be confirmed Officials then turned to Monarez, a career scientist who had already been serving as acting director She led the agency for just one month last summer before she was dismissed in August after clashing with Kennedy over vaccine policy
Jim O Neill then served as the agency s acting director for several months O Neill
Senate Hearing
Kennedy has not kept those promises; Cassidy has limited his criticism of the health secretary to posts on social media and press statements
Cassidy however has been vocal in his support of vaccines including during the March confirmation hearing for Dr Casey Means President Donald Trump's pick for surgeon general Means is a Kennedy ally who has questioned vaccines Cassidy has not yet scheduled a vote to advance Means’ nomination
Wednesday’s hearing will mark Kennedy’s first appearance before Cassidy since a confrontational Senate Finance Committee hearing in September and could offer the clearest sign yet of how the senator plans to handle those concerns A spokesperson for Cassidy declined to comment on what the senator plans to ask Kennedy Kennedy is also expected to face questions from Sen Thom Tillis R-N C who is retiring next year and has said he plans to speak more freely about his views including on members of Trump’s Cabinet (Tillis voted to confirm all members of Trump’s Cabinet in 2025 ) Kennedy will appear before the Finance Committee in the morning and the HELP Committee in the afternoon
In January, Kennedy overhauled the childhood vaccine schedule, reducing the number of recommended diseases for children to be vaccinated against from 18 to 11 a move Cassidy later said in a post on X would make America sicker The changes removed recommendations that all babies should be protected against hepatitis A, hepatitis B, RSV, dengue and two types of bacterial meningitis
In March a federal judge blocked those changes and put on hold the new members Kennedy appointed to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s vaccine advisory committee The administration hasn’t yet appealed the ruling But Kennedy signed off on new rules for the committee that could make it easier to work around the court’s decision Dorit Reiss, a vaccine policy expert at the University of California Law School, San Francisco, said she hopes that Cassidy will hold Kennedy accountable There s a raging measles outbreak, Reiss said Kennedy may have given lukewarm endorsements to the MMR vaccine but, as far as I know, hasn t made any efforts to call on people to vaccinate or to do anything practical to reduce the risk
Kennedy has already testified at five congressional hearings over the last week He has faced blistering criticism from Democrats over his vaccine policy and overhaul of federal health agencies At one hearing Kennedy said the U S has “done better” at preventing measles than any other country
“Judging by Secretary Kennedy’s recent testimony to Congress, he is likely to continue to gaslight the Senate Finance and HELP committees,” said Lawrence Gostin, director of the O Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law at Georgetown University He continues using terms like world-class science, rigorous evidence, and radical transparency, when in fact he has done the opposite
In an emailed statement Andrew Nixon a spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Services called what Gostin said “a baseless accusation that doesn’t match reality ” Another potential wild card for Kennedy is Tillis, a Republican who is not seeking reelection, Reiss said During the September hearing, she noted, Tillis suggested that Kennedy had broken his promises on vaccines, saying, I do also believe that some of your statements seem to contradict what you said in the prior hearing
The fact that you re a Republican doesn t mean that you need to blindly accept [Kennedy’s actions] ” Reiss said
A spokesperson for Tillis did not immediately respond to a request for comment Kennedy could also face questions about his recent comments to overhaul the U S Preventive Services Task Force, a federal panel that makes recommendations on preventive services, including cancer screenings, as well as on Trump’s executive order meant to spur research into psychedelics
Their widespread use aggravates the plastic pollution problem harming marine life and adding to the global waste crisis
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020, public health concerns overshadowed the bans The fear that reusable bags, which involved repeated handling would spread the virus led many states to roll back or temporarily suspended the bans The shift led to an increase in plastic usage, not just in bags but also in other items like containers and other packaging The plastic industry also advocated for a ban reversal by using the public health crisis to push forward When speaking with Chemical and Engineering News, Judith Enck, the founder of environmental group Beyond Plastics, said, Plastic
bag lobbyists are attempting to exploit a public health crisis There is no evidence that reusable bags contribute to the serious problem of COVID-19 ” As institutions like the National Institutes of Health confirmed that surface transmission was not the most prominent form of COVID-19 transmission many places began to reinstate their bans New York which had implemented a ban before the pandemic, resumed their ban in 2020 California reinstated its policy and introduced stricter regulations on plastic packaging Canada and several other countries moved forward with nationwide bans despite the temporary COVID-19 setback But not all plastic bag bans were reinstated Some places that had rolled back bans never
reinstated them, citing economic concerns from businesses In places where bans do not exist plastic use remains high fostering a cause for concern Despite progress after COVID-19 in reinstating bans, several challenges remain There is consistent pushback from the plastic industry which continues to rally against bans Many consumers who reverted to plastic bags have been slow to switch back to alternatives Individuals can play an important role We can promote the use of reusable bags and encourage friends and family to make the switch Individuals can also put pressure on their local representatives
signed off on a major overhaul of the childhood vaccination schedule in January that has since been blocked by a federal judge He was replaced by National Institutes of Health
Director Jay Bhattacharya in February who has since been overseeing the agency in an unusual dual role
Health Service Commissioned Corps and the U S Coast Guard She left as deputy surgeon general in 2021
Schwartz, a physician, earned a bachelor ’s degree in biomedical engineering and a medical degree from Brown University She also holds a master ’s degree in public health from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and a law degree from the University of Maryland
If confirmed, Schwartz would step into the role as the agency grapples with controversial policy changes under Kennedy
Last month a Massachusetts federal judge in a lawsuit brought by the American Academy of Pediatrics and several other medical organizations halted many of the vaccine policy changes made under Kennedy’s handpicked CDC vaccine advisory panel also known as the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, or ACIP That ruling also blocked the overhaul of the vaccination schedule The agency has yet to appeal the ruling
Black Mater nal Health Crisis
During the exchange, which came at the close of another annual Black Maternal Health Week the Democratic congresswoman laid out the stakes She explained that Black women are at least three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women and that most of those deaths are preventable, while also sounding the alarm about proposed cuts to key maternal health programs and how the rollback of diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts is impacting Black maternal health
Kennedy attempted to push back, but when pressed on disparities, he largely pivoted to general maternal health, citing overall improvements and claiming the administration had done more than its predecessors He downplayed his past claims about Tylenol during pregnancy saying he doubted avoiding it would significantly affect Black maternal deaths
In addition to facing mortality rates three to four times higher than any other demographic, Black women in the United States also face disproportionately high rates of complications like preeclampsia and emergency C-sections Those disparities are all the result of longstanding gaps in access to care medical bias and systemic inequities and in recent years, the landscape has only grown more precarious
The fallout from Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization in 2022, which saw an end to Roe v Wade and protections for abortions in this country has complicated pregnancy care nationwide while the rollback of DEI initiatives has put funding for targeted programs at risk Doulas, often cited as critical support for improving outcomes, are also navigating increasingly restrictive policies
Since the Pennsylvania representative’s remarks began circulating online, many responses including those from non-Black content creators have highlighted that addressing the needs of those most at risk improves outcomes across the board
The idea that targeted solutions exclude others misunderstands how public health works
If a table is wobbly, you can adjust everything around it, but it won t be steady until you fix the leg that’s most off balance
During the hearing, Lee ultimately said, “We can improve healthcare for everybody at the same time as helping the people who are most likely to die ”
NAACP
The NAACP is seeking declaratory and injunctive relief, as well as for the companies to “cease operating the Colossus Gas Plant unless and until they obtain the required permits; to apply the necessary pollution controls; and to pay appropriate civil penalties for each day of violation ”
Our right to clean air is not up for negotiation especially when companies prove expediency, not people, is their priority, Abre Conner, NAACP Director of Environmental and Climate Justice, said in an emailed statement to CNBC
xAI has skirted around obtaining permits for the gas turbines by claiming they’re only for temporary use The company has elected to use the turbines as the city’s power grid doesn t provide enough energy to power the data center
The Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) and EarthJustice are representing the NAACP in its case against xAI The SELC’s website states that xAI has a history of using unpermitted gas turbines to power its data centers which are often located in low-income predominantly Black neighborhoods
The data center at the heart of the NAACP’s lawsuit is located only a few miles away from Boxtown, a city whose population is 90% Black and has a median income of $36,000, according to Census data Shelby County already led Tennessee in asthma hospitalizations and the fumes emitted by the data center have only exacerbated the issue Politico reported that several Boxtown residents spoke out against the data center at a public hearing last year
“I can’t breathe at home it smells like gas outside ” Boxtown resident Alexis Humphreys said through tears holding up her asthma inhaler during the hearing “How come I can’t breathe at home, and y all get to breathe at home?
AI data centers have become an increasingly contentious topic in recent years, as it’s hard to see them as anything other than a net negative While they may create jobs during construction data centers require very few people to maintain them once operational The technology they power can also displace people from their jobs Not to mention the aforementioned environmental impact data centers have on the neighborhoods where they re located
As folks have either seen or heard about the impact of data centers there has been significant pushback from residents whenever a city council or state legislature considers approving a data center After widespread public outcry, the city council of Chandler, Arizona, unanimously rejected a proposal to build a data center in the city
Just this week, folks in the small town of Festus, Missouri, voted out four city council members who were up for reelection because they approved the building of an AI data center Be it lawsuits or electoral consequences it s clear that people aren t willing to sacrifice their health or economic well-being so AI companies can increase shareholder value
