This is an independent essay written for Green Alliance by Adam Dyster. Adam formerly served as a political adviser to Steve Reed during his time as shadow secretary of state for environment, food and rural affairs, and prior to this worked as an adviser to the director general and chair of the National Trust.
In this essay, Adam sets out why restoring nature must be a priority in this government. He argues that Labour need to address nature’s degradation because of how it is costing people’s finances such as through flooding and food prices.
The environmental movement must do more to demonstrate how the policies needed to restore nature deliver benefits to society through improving public health, creating jobs and boosting resilience to climate change.
With a government motivated to deliver against their missions, how nature’s restoration delivers tangible benefits must be front and centre to garner the buy-in from government to make progress in this parliament.
