This insight summarises the research collaboration between Green Alliance and Lancaster University, investigating how members of the UK parliament understand and respond to climate change. It included analysis of parliamentary speeches, a focus group with NGO representatives and interviews with 23 current and former MPs. We feature the anonymised stories of four MPs, based on the interviews offering a glimpse into how climate change looks from a politician's point of view.
Significantly, the study found that politicians understand the need for action on climate change, but it is not straightforward for them to make the case for it. This insight offers three main reasons for why this might be, and presents recommendations for developing a renewed political mandate for climate action in the UK.
