ONASSIS, LEGACY

HE WAS THE MOST FAMOUS AND FLAMBOYANT GREEK OF MODERN TIMES. TODAY, THE INSTITUTION THAT BEARS HIS NAME OFFERS SOCIETY MANY OF THE THINGS THAT LIFE HAD SO GENEROUSLY OFFERED HIM.

Αristotle Onassis passed away at the Hôpital Américain de Paris on March 15, 1975. Born in 1906, he left a distinct mark on his roving life, both professionally and privately. The Asia Minor catastrophe was a major event in his life that jumpstarted his adventures as, in 1922, he was forced to leave his hometown of Smyrna with his family, bound initially for Greece, and after that for Argentina. In Buenos Aires at first, he involved himself in the tobacco trade, and then in shipping. In 1936, he bought his first tanker, and within a few years had managed to become the “king of oil tankers”. He acquired social prestige through his "golden" marriage to the daughter of the established shipowner Stavros Livanos. He and his wife Tina had two children together: Alexander and Christina. In the 1950s, he bought a 99-metre anti-submarine frigate from the Canadian fleet for just $34,000, then transformed it into the most luxurious yacht of the era: The

Christina would drop anchor at Port Hercule in Monaco, the city that had by then become home to his new business headquarters. He maintained a close friendship with the prince of Monaco, and it is rumored that it was his idea for the prince to marry Hollywood actress Grace Kelly so that the tourist resort which had been abandoned by the jet–set after the war would regain its former glory. Onassis would later return to Athens to set up his own airline company, Olympic Airways. Athens is where he felt truly at home. Beyond the many French and English nannies, he was particularly interested in ensuring that his children received a Greek upbringing. In contrast to the public image he so artfully cultivated to focus mainly on his business successes, Aristotle Onassis was a deeply educated man. His sister, Callirrhoe, would confess to me in an interview on the twentieth anniversary of his death: "He spoke five languages fluently and had a passion for Greek mythology. He identified with Odysseus in cunning and Hercules in power".

While the world’s rich and powerful recruited armies of public relations consultants to gild and glamorize their image, Onassis surrounded by a small group of smart Greek associates would surprise everyone with announcements of daring business moves that drew the envy of his rivals, such as his exclusive deal for the transport of Saudi oil. Rumors of his private life left the international community speechless. Such was the news of his romance with the unparalleled soprano Maria Callas. Callas was one of the many celebrities hosted aboard Christina, on Onassis' famous "endless" cruises over "endless" Greek summers. Winston Churchill, Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, Greta Garbo, Rudolf Nureyev, Richard Burton, and Elizabeth Taylor: the list of celebrities who cruised on Christina is a long one. beginning of the end of his marriage to Tina. Despite the soprano’s ardent desire, the romance between these two prominent Greek international jet–setters was not destined to end happily at the altar. In yet another dazzling move, Onassis flirted with, and subsequently won the affections of, Jackie Kennedy, the widow of the assassinated president of the United States of America who would henceforth go down in history as Jackie O. The images of their wedding on the private island of Skorpios an arid and uninhabited islet turned into a lavish earthly paradise by Onassis would shock the American public, as not much time had passed since the assassination of JFK. Callas, unaware that her beloved was also in a relationship with Jackie, would attempt suicide. This Greek tragedy reached its climax in 1973 with the death of his son, Alexander, in the suspicious crash of an airplane in which he was passenger. The loss of his son proved unbearable for Onassis. His physical collapse was gradual, but total. He lasted just two more years following the death of his son. When his will was read, it was revealed

that his assets were to be divided in two: one half inherited by his daughter Christina, and the other half bequeathed to a foundation for the public benefit the Onassis Foundation that would focus on education, healthcare, and culture, both in Greece and beyond.

The Public Benefit Foundation spends almost 40% of the net annual profits of the business, while the rest are invested over again. What starts as a struggle across the seas of the world comes back to Greece as social investment.

Since 1978, more than 7,400 scholarships have been awarded to students and researchers for postgraduate and doctoral studies in Greece and around the world.

Since 1992, a model hospital clinic the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center has been in operation, saving the lives of thousands of heart patients. The Onassis National Transplant Center, expected to be delivered in 2024, is yet another donation made by the Foundation to the Greek state.

The Cavafy Αrchive was acquired by the Onassis Foundation at the end of 2012 to prevent a potential fragmentation.

The Onassis Stegi’s motto is «All we have is words. all we have is worlds.»

On Syngrou avenue, on the same street as the Cardiac Surgery Center, stands another iconic Onassis Foundation building, in operation since 2010, as the flagship of Onassis’ cultural legacy: Onassis Stegi, with the neon installation by the pioneering British artist Tim Etchells: "All we have is words, all we have is worlds" at its façade. Onassis Stegi supports Greek and international productions and co-productions of theater, dance, music, cinema, and the visual arts, as well as other international collaborations, open discussions, and festivals.

The Onassis Foundation has acquired and runs the Cavafy Archive since 2012, thus safeguarding the archive’s continued presence in Greece and digitizing it so that the public can have access to more than 2,000 archival items.

However, the cultural activities of the Onassis Foundation Onassis Culture do not confine themselves to the four walls of a single building. They extend out into many parts of the city of Athens, at such venues as Onassis Ready, an arts incubator of new ideas in a former factory in the Renti area; the Matala Arcade meeting point in the heart of Athens; and the arts space that is the Mantra on

Dionysiou Areopagitou street. Moving in sync with the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the Foundation launched the Onassis Channel on YouTube, where everyone can watch theater and dance productions for free, as well as discussions on current issues, podcasts, educational programs, concerts, and online movie premieres.

The Foundation’s activities also include a special educational program for children on the autism spectrum, as well as their families and teachers, that aims to provide them with access to knowledge, art, and the joys of learning: Onassis AiR, an international artistic residency and research program in operation since 2019. Almost half a century after his passing, the legacy of Aristotle Onassis is present in a wide range of activities that may not have been related to his public profile during his lifetime. Their contribution is invaluable.

Onassis’ turbulent life is best described by Stelios Papadimitriou the Foundation’s late president, and father of the current president in an interview with me years ago: "Onassis’ life requires a biographer worthy of Sophocles or Euripides".

MYKONOS MUSE

PHOTO ALBUM IS THE SOUL OF A TAINTLESS MYKONOS, AN ISLAND WHICH INSISTS ON BEING ONE OF THE ELECT DESTINATIONS OF THE JET–SET CIRCUIT.

Same as many chic adolescents of her time perhaps too chic to be innocent Lizy Manola first went to Mykonos during the 1970s. At the time, a wind of freedom was blowing in Greece, inspired by the international hippy movements and that of May 1968, as well as the domestic change in Greece, after the fall of the dictatorship. Lily mentions in her foreword that she was mesmerised by “the light, the bright white-washed alleys, the turquoise sea, the chapels, the innocent, smiling faces of the inhabitants.”

This Cycladic island lured her to such an extent that she bought a summer house therewhere she stays every summer and has inspired her since to engage in photography. It was a time when ships would not moor in the harbour and Psarou was still a quiet family beach with a small taverna. Among the happy few visitors of Mykonos, one could discern the bluebloods, the business or shipping tycoons,

Hollywood stars or those of the European film industry. The aforementioned would not hide, but would bathe, usually naked, in the island’s virgin beaches unlike today’s celebrities.

I believe this is the spirit of freedom imprinted in Lizy’s album Mykonos Muse. At this point, may I be allowed a personal flash back. It was at Psarou, Easter 1979. With the confidence bestowed to me by my good physical condition as a water polo athlete, feeling intrepid, I moved towards the sea and dove into the great blue waters of the Aegean. My group of friends, a dozen members of the golden youth of Athens, were applauding me enthusiastically, while I stupidly kept on swimming, even though my temples were long numb.

We were alone at a beach hundreds of metres wide, and we were relishing it. Mykonos was our own secret paradise, which we would often visit. Roughly forty years later, it is end of June, I am sitting comfortably on a sunbed made by Loro Piana, on the same beach, with the same high spirits.

An elegant waitress with the air of a model, refills the rosé wine called Idylle, chosen by my companion.

An inflatable speedboat transports our friends who have arrived by yacht to the island and have anchored right opposite us. An armada of cruisers of various types is moored at the bay, protected by the winds. Mega yachts, three-mast sailing boats, and even inflatable speed boats, or traditional caiques harmoniously coexist in a spontaneous boat show. The scene at the once unfrequented beach is completely different to the one belonging to my teenage years.

A bustling crowd, consisting of 21st century globe-trotters, is enjoying the sun, the sea, and the luxury of being in the right place at the right time. We pick up conversation with the people sitting next to us on the beach. Steven has just sold a start-up and has come to celebrate with his girlfriend who is studying Fine Arts in New York. They found out from their friends that Mykonos is a party island par excellence, so their whole programme evolves around which DJ is performing and when. Tonight they are going to Scorpio, the new hot spot, set up a few years ago by two Germans. Tomorrow they are going to Alemagou, and the day after to Principote. The party never ends in Mykonos. I ask them mainly looking at Christen if they have scheduled to

visit the neighbouring island of Delos. Their answer comes as no surprise to me. “We wake up so late, having had so many all-nighters”. The holy island of Apollo can wait. And yet, there is a certain crowd of people who arrive at Mykonos just to visit the land where, according to Mythology, Leto hunted by Hera gave birth to Apollo and Artemis. Their father, Zeus, was chief among the twelve gods of Olympus.

I leaf through the book Mykonos Muse, published by Assouline, and I perceive the respect felt for the island and its inhabitants. Many photos take me back to an ideal, nostalgic image of it. Others connect me to the present day. Mind you! Lizy doesn’t reject Mykonos’ 2,000,000 annual visitors, nor does she deny its evolution as one of the most “in” destinations of the beginning of the 21st century. Along with Ibiza, Saint Tropez, Dubai and Saint Barthelemy, just to mention a few, she simply pays homage to a “gleeful land, a vibrant sea, a pulsating, translucent air and a sky which shamelessly rejoices during the day at the luxury of life-bearing sun, while at night it brings down myriads of stars, like the fingers of your raised hands”, as the Greek author, M. Karagatsis, aptly described it.

Simple mechanical apparati provide further protection from the sun and the wind, creating a cyclical domestic experience that adopts the perspective of a compass.
