Visitors can also attend Soup at Six, a monthly series offering delicious soups accompanied by guest speakers who explore engaging historical topics.

Keep an eye out for upcoming themes, including “The Magic and Music of Spring” in May to celebrate how Ohioans create art, culture and literature, or “Take Me Home: A Family First Friday” in July, to celebrate how we gather. Every event features the hallmarks of First Fridays: great food, cool art and live music. Rain or shine, First Fridays is held the first Friday of each month in Downtown Canton from 5-9 p.m.
For a vibrant public art installation, look no further than Umbrella Alley in Louisville. The once uninhabited alley now dazzles, thanks to the city and many citizens, businesses and artisans that came together to install nearly 200 colorful umbrellas in a photo-worthy display. This whimsical spot serves as a gathering place with murals, tables and chairs, a kids’ play area and a piano open in the summer for maestros. The alley is free, so stop by to enjoy the nearby shops and restaurants, explore the artwork and return to see special feature displays, like the beautiful red, white and blue umbrellas to celebrate America 250!
Alliance is also getting in on the patriotic fun!
Glamorgan Castle, a spectacular stone fortress open to the public, was built in 1904 by Col. William Henry Morgan and has since served as a private residence, home of the local Elks organization, corporate headquarters for Alliance Machine and Alliance City Schools administrative offices. It’s open for guided tours on Fridays at 1 or 2 p.m.

Also at Glamorgan Castle, enjoy self-guided tours the second weekend of the month with Castle Crusaders, its preservationists. From June 14–July 31, three historical alliances are coming together to display American flags on the historic lawn. Stop by to see the castle grounds awash in red, white and blue! Be your own historian around Stark County with the Stark County PastPort! Launching in March, the PastPort gives you access to fascinating sites around the county, from the Hoover Historical Center, Jackson Township Schoolhouse and Plain Township Historical Society exhibits at the Plain Township offices to the Alliance Historical Society’s Mabel Hartzell Home, Haines House Underground Railroad Museum and Marlboro Township’s Dr. Kersey G. Thomas Home. Visit these locations and watch short videos at select locations that bring Stark County’s history to life through its people, places and artifacts.

From canal towns to castles, these sites reveal how Stark County’s people shaped the region’s past and continue to open their doors to share it.
BY KRISTEN HAMPSHIRE
Glamorgan Castle, Alliance

History
runs deep in Stark County, and you can walk right through it. From Victorian mansions and canal-era homes to presidential landmarks and towpath trails, these sites invite you to step inside the stories, architecture and legacies that shaped the region.
A Look Inside
LOCAL HISTORY AND HOSPITALITY MEET at The Canton Woman’s Club, an 1867 mansion which hosts elegant luncheons, teas, special events and even weddings in curated, restored rooms that tell heirloom stories. Stop by for a tour, event or glimpse into more than a century of civic tradition.
Step into one of Ohio’s true Underground Railroad landmarks at the Haines House. Built in the 1830s, this location sheltered freedom seekers on their way north, often hiding in the second floor attic room. Guided tours, held during the second weekend of the month, bring the past to life and feature stories of a truly multiracial coalition of abolitionists in Northeast Ohio.

Rewind to the 1800s and the childhood home of Mabel Hartzell , an active member in Alliance’s community. Built in 1867, the Victorian house features original furnishings and treasures like vintage quilts and early Alliance photographs. Tours share Hartzell’s mission to preserve the city’s founding stories. Don’t miss Glamorgan Castle in Alliance. The name is borrowed from the original owner’s Welsh roots, and the historic home features carved oak interiors, marble staircases and stained-glass windows. Explore the three floors and the basement, where you can see a former swimming pool and bowling alley, at your own leisure or with a tour guide. Monumental Moments

START AT THE MCKINLEY PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY & MUSEUM, then pair it with the Saxton-McKinley House (First Ladies National Historic Site). You’ll get big-picture history and the unexpected details locals love. Archivist Mark Holland happens to be one of them as a lifelong resident of the region.
“I’ve known the monument my entire life,” he says, relating a connection to it that began during childhood visits and later continued when he shared stories during guided educational tours about the history floor of the museum to school-age students. Today, he is keeper of all things McKinley Museum, which is the Stark County Historical Society. “Most people don’t realize this,” he says.
Q: WHAT MOSTS SURPRISES VISITORS?
A: The scale. From above, the grounds form a sword — the mausoleum at the hilt — honoring McKinley’s role as commander in chief and Civil War service. The monument is on 22 acres of land, and I’m told while it may not be the largest monument to a U.S. president, it takes up one of the largest areas.
Q: ANY CAN’T-MISS ARTIFACTS?
A: Ida McKinley’s tiara (yes, the one spotted on Pawn Stars), the grand piano she played in the White House as first lady and an illustrated chart of McKinley’s Civil War promotions. On file in the archives, there are also original 1869 letters Ida and her sister wrote from Europe to home about daily life and culture, which became known as the “Grand Tour.”
and original bookcases in the second floor library are highlights.
Take a tour of Massillon’s 1890s Five Oaks mansion, home to the Massillon Woman’s Club. Designed by Charles F. Schweinfurth, the Cleveland architect behind several Millionaire’s Row estates, the sandstone home features intricate woodwork, marble fireplaces and original Tiffany stained glass.
Step onto the grounds of Spring Hill Historic Home , an 1821 farmhouse that once provided shelter to freedom seekers on the Underground Railroad. Visitors can still see the hidden staircase leading to a sugar closet that was used as a hiding space. Tours trace the site’s frontier roots and the family’s quiet courage in the pursuit of freedom.
Q: WHAT’S DELIGHTFULLY UNEXPECTED AT THE MUSEUM?
A: A vintage analog planetarium — its “star ball” was hand-drilled to add approximately 1,500 more stars — and a rescue-animal habitat in the interactive science gallery in Discover World.
Q: BEST WAY TO EXPERIENCE THE MONUMENT?
A: Learn the story inside first, then climb the steps. The grandeur hits differently when you know the meaning behind the design. Be a regular by attending our Soup at Six Series, a la carte for a single event or purchase a season pass.

Tracing the Towpath
STRETCHING FROM CLEVELAND TO NEW PHILADELPHIA, the Ohio & Erie Canalway National Heritage Area connects past and present through 110 miles of trail towns, natural beauty and living history. From canal-era hubs like Canal Fulton and Massillon, the route offers miles of ways to explore Northeast Ohio’s waterways and heritage — on foot, by bike or aboard the St. Helena III canal boat. Then, there’s the Historic Zoar Village, a one-of-a-kind preserved 19th-century settlement built by German separatists.
Looking for ways to explore? Just ask Mandy Altimus Stahl, archivist at the Massillon Museum (MassMu), where she has personally flipped through approximately 1.5 million pages of history, from Civil War letters to business ledgers.
Stahl wrote about it in Early Massillon and Lost Kendal, available in the MassMu gift shop. Before you visit, check out the virtual archives with more than 30,000 photos from the collection. “This is a drop in the bucket,” she quips, always scanning and uploading.
While there, check out the new TWiLite Café on site, a mission in action run by the nonprofit The Workshops Inc. (TWi), which employs adults with developmental disabilities.

Q: WHAT MAKES THE CANAL SUCH A DEFINING PART OF LOCAL HISTORY?
A: The canal is the reason Massillon exists. Founder James Duncan built the town around it because he knew it would bring commerce. Wheat farmers once lined the docks to sell their grain, which is how the city earned its nickname, the Wheat City.
Q: WHAT SURPRISES PEOPLE MOST?
A: How slow travel was — 2 miles an hour! The boats were pulled by mules walking the towpath. You can still experience that pace on the Towpath Trail, a scenic multiuse path that follows the canal’s original route.
Q: ARE ANY PIECES OF THE OLD CANAL STILL VISIBLE?
A: Absolutely. Part of Lock 5 is still there behind the post office downtown. When crews dig for utility work, they still hit canal stones. It literally lies beneath our streets.

STARK COUNTY’S STRETCH of the Lincoln Highway, America’s first coast-to-coast roadway, remains one of its most storied landmarks. Three historic road markers can still be seen — two in East Canton and one in Minerva, where visitors can spot a preserved section of the original bricklined road. In East Canton, don’t miss Clearview Golf Club, founded by PGA trailblazer Bill Powell, who broke barriers in golf and American history. Stop at the Canton Classic Car Museum in Downtown Canton and imagine yourself behind the wheel of a Holmes automobile, built in Canton from 1917 to 1922 by Arthur Holmes. Marketed as “the world’s only full-sized air-cooled car” it was also described as “America’s ugliest.” Continue to the Massillon Museum, home to a permanent collection of more than 40,000 items, many gifted by the community. The American Alliance of Museums-accredited institution features a special exhibition, Driving Forces: The Lincoln Highway Journey, which is open May 30–Oct. 18, highlighting mobility and place-making in early automobile travel.

Open Air & Great Vibes
Stark County boasts fantastic outdoor stages for a perfect evening of music under the stars. Head to the Nash Family Jackson Amphitheater for a striking, 3,500-person venue hosting major tribute acts. Near Oakwood Square Plaza, the Plain Township Legacy Park Amphitheater is a new gem that feels like a big community backyard party with lawn seating and fire pits. Down the towpath, the St. Helena Amphitheater in Canal Fulton offers a dose of history and picturesque canal views with your tunes. Don’t forget the MKF Amphitheater in Massillon for another top-notch destination to enjoy summer jams and tribute bands!

Music with a View
You haven’t truly experienced Stark County until you’ve attended the Musica Concert Series at Gervasi Vineyard. Picture pure bliss: a Tuscan-style villa, rolling vineyards, a glass of fine wine and a live band. For an equally charming feel, look for the Summer Serenades in the Park , where Canton Symphony Orchestra ensembles create a delightful, family-friendly picnic atmosphere. In Alliance, the Rockin’ at the Caboose series turns the downtown square next to a historic train car into a lively hub for local bands and food trucks — its music paired perfectly with unique local touches.

The Canton Memorial Civic Center is an iconic piece of Canton history, a massive 5,200-seat venue that continues to make noise with a lineup ranging from country stars to gospel queens and everything in between.

Freebie Concert Series
There is a certain magic in a small-town summer evening, where the air cools just enough and fireflies start to dance. To capture that feeling without breaking the bank, check out these local gathering spots where the atmosphere is priceless but the entry is free. The Massillon Summer Concert Series is a favorite, filling the newly renovated Duncan Plaza with everything from throwback acts to local stars (typically held Thursday nights starting in June).
