MANSFIELD & RICHLAND COUNTY ARE FOR THE

& STRONG INSPIRED

We are a family of communities that are working together to boldly set the standard for reinvention and imagination. Our rolling hills reflect the grit and glory of our ups and downs, where the soul of our collective communities has been curated, crafted and cultivated by artists, philosophers, builders, inventors, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author and Hollywood icons.

We are surrounded by fertile farms settled by proud pioneers, including American legend, Johnny Appleseed, who believed in the beauty and honesty found in working the land for the benefit of all.

A WALK IN THE PARK

They were followed by rugged industrialists, who built the nation’s trust by giving life to the pump industry, new forms of transportation, power generation, robotics and innovations that changed our world.

The roads, highways, bike trails and rivers that connect our cities and villages give way to a culture of dynamic residents with humbly hidden talents and trades that transform tenacity into triumph. Here you will find space for people who want an abundant life.

We act upon the need for innovation, invention and reinterpretation. We are outspoken and achievementdriven, dedicated and hardworking, with a strong belief in the value of inner expression, quiet contemplation and the soul-inspiring replenishment of the great outdoors.

Today, we are all creators, sharing a collective vision, deeply rooted in the success of our past.

Generation after generation, forging imagination and prosperity.

We are building momentum, led by the dreamers of now.

We are a story in the making and yours to transform.

Come, make it in Mansfield. Welcome home.

Maintaining Richland County Park District’s 30-plus miles of woodland trails and preserving its 1,000 acres of forests, waterfalls and parkland is a long hike from maintaining bombs, missiles and guns in Afghanistan, Kuwait and Japan. But after six years and multiple deployments, former U.S. Airforce weapons team chief Jordan Tackett has a new role protecting and sharing the beauty of Richland’s parks.

Born and raised in Bellville, Tackett took his hometown for granted growing up. He joined the Airforce looking for adventure and travel, sure that he’d find somewhere he liked more. “But after six years in the Airforce and living all over the world, my priorities shifted,” he shares. “I wanted to settle and raise a family. I knew of no place better than where I grew up.”

Ready for a career shift, Tackett wanted to capitalize on his love of public service. A lifelong outdoorsman, he volunteered at Ohio State Parks and Mansfield’s Gorman Nature Center before joining the park district as executive director in July 2025. Fatefully, he found a natural connection with local Emily Smith, director of operations at the Ohio Bird Sanctuary. Now married, the duo has a 1-year-old son, Teddy — named for President Theodore Roosevelt, founder of the U.S. National Parks.

Every day is different at the Richland County Park District, whether Tackett and his team are overseeing education and conservation, managing land and species or maintaining park facilities and the Richland B&O Bike Trail. He views the work of preserving and restoring habitat as a way of holding on to the things that truly matter.

“I’m so lucky to work outside every day in one of the most beautiful places in the country,” says Tackett. Rediscovering his hometown as an adult has been eyeopening. “There’s no place I’d rather live. There are so many cool experiences and places here, and everyone is incredibly welcoming.”

He feels the energy of new business, relishing how much people support and care about conservation work through all the progress.

“Things are changing and our population is growing,” says Tackett, “but people here realize the value of what we have. We’re all working hard to grow, but we’re careful to preserve the warm, small-town vibe and all the best things about our community.”

MOTOR DAYS

Nestled in the midst of tranquil farmland, on the edge of the village of Lexington, sits one of the most historic and exciting auto racing facilities in the country: the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

ON THE SCENE

with

CRAIG RUST

President Craig Rust has been steering the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course forward since 2011.

What does it mean to Mid-Ohio to be a part of the community?

It’s important to us to be good corporate citizens. We provide seasonal employment in food services, security and ticketing, as well as medical and fire safety.

What is going to be a can’t-miss event at the track in 2026?

The Honda Indy 200 is the one that everyone gravitates to. Over 50,000 fans have attended Indy races here in the past! But for locals, I recommend coming out to see our vintage sports car and motorcycle racing as well.

Who are the most famous people who have visited Mid-Ohio?

Many big names in racing — Roger Penske, Mario Andretti, Bobby Rahal and Jackie Stewart. NASCAR founder Bill France Sr. and his sons, Bill Jr. and current CEO Jim France, have visited. NBA legend Michael Jordan was here because he owned a motorcycle team, and actor and film director Paul Newman raced here many times under a secret name.

What’s your top local dining spot? There are a lot of great restaurants in this area, but Hudson & Essex is my favorite. It has a nice bar, really good food and a great environment.

Every year, thousands of motorsports fans from across the U.S. flock to this paved, natural terrain road course. They come to watch some of the top professional drivers and riders in the world compete in national and international racing series, such as The Honda Indy 200 Presented by the 2027 CR-V Hybrid, an open-wheel event that is part of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES on July 3–5, celebrating America’s 250th birthday.

“This is a chance for Ohioans to see some of the best drivers in the world here in their own backyard,” Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course President Craig Rust says. “These are the same teams and cars which run in the Indy 500.”

Opened in 1962, the 2.4-mile track hosts a range of events, featuring amateur, club and professionals competing in motorcycle, sports car and vintage racing as well. A family-friendly environment where kids 12 and under get in free with a ticketed adult brings people back again and again.

“This is an internationally known course with a lot of elevation changes, making it a true test of skills,” Rust says. “Fans have the option of finding a spot on the natural hillsides to watch or purchasing a grandstand seat.”

“Once fans see vehicles racing at close to 180 miles per hour down our backstretch, they want to come back for more!”

The Mid-Ohio School offers driving and riding courses taught by former racing professionals, with experience in Formula One and IndyCar, and hundreds of combined wins in many other styles of racing.

“Their wealth of knowledge is off the charts, and that’s what makes us special,” School Director Sonny Gee says. Established in 1993, the school offers a wide variety of courses, ranging from teen defensive driving to three levels of high performance.

“Teen Defensive Driving is our No. 1 course, and it saves lives,” Gee says. “We educate people on what to do in certain situations, such as driving in bad weather or loss of control recovery skills. We do teach people how to race, but also teach them the craft of racing, so they have the tools to take it to the next level if they choose.” Some students have gone on to compete locally and well beyond, with The Mid-Ohio School having graduated many national champions.

Racing Soon

Richland County’s thriving motorsports scene will receive an extra surge of electricity when the iconic Mansfield Speedway reopens for dirt-track racing, beginning May 2 with the Comeback Classic. First opened in 1959, the historic racetrack was acquired in June 2025 by Matt Tifft and wife Jordan after several years of vacancy. Matt is a successful entrepreneur and professional stock car racing driver in his own right, known for his previous racing career in NASCAR and being the youngest team owner in NASCAR Cup Series history.

The revitalized Mansfield Speedway will feature new grandstands, a jumbotron, seating, camping, a beer garden and a children’s play area, and is slated to host more than 100 event days per year, including concerts and community festivals. “Think country Coachella meets horsepower heaven,” Chief Marketing Officer Caleb Burns says. “Where die-hard racers and everyday thrill-seekers unite to raise hell, make memories and feel the ground shake.”

THE MAIN EVENT

From dreaming up ways to deliver vibrant experiences to overseeing security and ticketing, Zuri Birmingham kicked off her career in Michigan managing massive events for corporations and sporting organizations, including the NFL, MLS and Tough Mudder.

Raised in nearby Crestline, Birmingham’s wildly diverse professional roles took her all over the country for almost a decade. But it was her role as a mom that brought her back to Richland County. As her son Zikenna, now 10, approached preschool, she felt the pull of home. She wanted her son to know her mother and grandmother, and to grow up in a town with an atmosphere of connection and belonging, where everyone knows their neighbors and supports one another. She picked Mansfield, saying the choice was easy.

“Despite the excitement I’ve experienced in many big cities, there’s nothing like living in a place where the sense of community and human connection are so strong,” says Birmingham. “I’ve had the same best friends since I was 4 years old. Today, my son calls them aunt and uncle. He got to know his nana. And like me, he’s grown even closer to my mom.”

Mansfield’s many locally owned businesses, friendly people and overall warmth towards residents and visitors alike make it feel like home to Birmingham. She started 2026 in a new position as development coordinator for the Y of North Central Ohio. She makes the most of her talents building partnerships and events that support the Y and fund community programs, opening doors for all families and kids in Richland County. She also volunteers as a board member at the Renaissance Theatre.

A love of the performing arts and events runs in the family — her grandfather was a DJ, while her mother and grandmother sang in the church. They passed on the gregarious personality that makes Birmingham so good at building meaningful events and experiences. Her son has inherited the performance gene as well. As early as age 3, he expressed interested in modeling, followed by theater and screen acting.

Birmingham’s role as a mom and sense of community involvement keep her enthusiastic about Mansfield. “We could live anywhere, but I couldn’t find what we have here anywhere else,” she says. “My son and I still love to travel and explore the world, but we’ll always come home to Mansfield.”

DOWNTOWN RISING

Downtown Mansfield is buzzing with activity as excitement builds for the completion of the 2026 Main Street Improvement Project. Already a lively destination filled with shopping, dining and entertainment options for the entire family, downtown is only getting better.

Mansfield’s renaissance began with the construction of the Richland Carrousel Park and gained momentum through the Mansfield Rising Plan. That community effort, along with strong partnerships among economic development organizations, has created lasting progress. The Main Street Improvement Project, the first major infrastructure upgrade in 45 years, builds on the foundation and sets the stage for future growth.

Mayor Jodie Perry sees new opportunities ahead: “With the public infrastructure nearing completion, we are attracting looks from developers who are interested in investing here. I think we will see new living spaces, retail stores and other entertainment options coming to the area.”

Still, Mansfield’s greatest strength remains its people. “The people make it vibrant,” Perry says. Locally owned businesses reflect the creativity and dedication of those who live and work here to create a welcoming downtown that continues to grow.

As Perry reminds us, “Never, never, never give up.” That spirit defines Mansfield, a community moving forward with purpose and pride.

ON THE SCENE JENNIFER KIME with

Since 2009, Jennifer Kime has been laying the groundwork for the city’s revitalization as CEO of Downtown Mansfield, Inc.

How does the Main Street Improvement Project fit into the bigger vision for Downtown Mansfield’s future?

The project supports a decade of private investment by modernizing public infrastructure and creating a safer, more accessible, welcoming pedestrian experience. It updates critical infrastructure while creating a foundation where growing businesses can thrive for decades to come.

Have residents and businesses helped shape this project?

The design grew from the Mansfield Rising initiative, started in 2018 by 15 local leaders committing to major projects that have brought in over $19 million in investments. The initiative has been refined through extensive stakeholder engagement, ensuring it reflects a shared community vision.

How has the project balanced preservation with modern revitalization?

As a National Historic Landmark District, preserving Mansfield’s historic fabric is a priority. Original materials such as slate and sandstone were repurposed, and traditional brickwork was paired with modern lighting and furnishings to create a design that feels timeless and relevant to today.

What is your long-term hope for downtown Mansfield?

My hope is when people look back, they’ll see this project as authentic, intentional and lasting, a true reflection of the city’s spirit and its role as the community’s cultural and economic heart.

HOMETOWNS WITH Heart: COMMUNITIES OF RICHLAND COUNTY

Mansfield may be called the heart of Richland County, but it’s the family of small towns and villages that truly embody its spirit. Each community tells its own story of pride and connection.

With convenient access to major routes, Ontario continues to grow while keeping its welcoming hometown feel.

SEEDS OF CHANGE

When your heritage is one of Richland County’s largest family farms, it’s hard not to be a natural champion for growth. Despite his local roots, Richland County native Donnie Clark moved away for college and early jobs. Eventually, he and his wife Jamie returned to settle down and nurture a family legacy connected to the region.

Having farmed together for years, Clark and his dad Butch decided to rescue a historic grain mill in 2011 — a fixture in the village of Bellville since 1840. The Clarks dubbed the business Elzy Milling & Trade, Elzy a family name for generations. Sharing a passion for sustainable farming practices, they created an entirely new market for the mill, drawing customers from around the world for custom and non-GMO animal feed, grass seed, pond maintenance, fertilizer and related goods. A curated mix of home and garden supplies transforms the retail operation into a destination.

Elzy Milling stands tall, occupying two full blocks in Bellville, with the Richland B&O Bike Trail and Clear Fork River running alongside. The frequent subject of a painter’s brush and photographer’s camera, the mill is a magnet for visitors, many discovering the picturesque spot while riding the B&O bike trail that weaves through the county’s towns and villages like a string of pearls. It was the pastoral lifestyle that inspired Donnie Clark

to return to Richland County and breathe new life into the mill. The gamble paid off, with Elzy Milling & Trade’s success earning two business awards thus far and the attention of local leaders.

“I’ve never seen a community so tied to its local businesses,” says Clark. “Civic pride and support are defining characteristics, ensuring businesses don’t just exist here — they thrive.” His experience eventually led him to the Richland Area Chamber and Economic Development’s special projects team, where he supports efforts to cultivate new business in the region. The team capitalizes on affordability, plentiful real estate and a welcoming culture, all equally attractive to the solo entrepreneur, mid-size start-up or any company looking to expand or relocate.

“Richland County is the best intersection,” says Clark. “It’s a great place to raise your family, enjoy time in the outdoors and get in on the ground floor entrepreneurially and economically.”

He has a passion for fly fishing on the Clear Fork River, biking the beautiful B&O Bike Trail and making family memories at places like Mohican State Park and Kingwood Center Gardens. Not to mention, “There’s always a cool restaurant or locally owned shop to discover on the way home,” Clark adds.

Hollywood in Ohio: THE SHAWSHANK TRAIL

Over 30 years ago, film crews arrived at the Historic Ohio State Reformatory to film The Shawshank Redemption. Though not a box office hit, the movie has become IMDb’s top-rated movie of all time and put Mansfield on the map as a global destination. It also inspired The Shawshank Trail, a self-guided driving tour of iconic filming locations across Richland, Ashland and Wyandot counties.

The trail features 16 well-marked stops, including the Historic Ohio State Reformatory, the cabin from the movie’s opening scene, Brooks’ bird-feeding bench and a mural at the grocery store where Brooks and Red worked. Step into the Shawshank Woodshop in nearby Upper Sandusky to see the world’s largest public collection of Shawshank props.

Experience the trail at your own pace by car. Most stops on the Shawshank Trail are free, but the paid Reformatory tour is well worth the price and a great starting point. Choose a guided tour or explore the hushed halls of Shawshank Prison at your own pace. Explore the Shawshank Museum, find Andy’s iconic rock hammer and peer into the escape tunnel that led Andy to freedom before plotting your own breakout from one of three new on-site escape rooms. Browse the gift shop for souvenirs and extend your stay at the retro-style private rentals at Hancock Heights, newly opened across the road from the Reformatory. Download a virtual guide at shawshanktrail.com to start your Shawshank pilgrimage.

Uniontown Brewing Co. has restored a pre-Civil War building in downtown Ashland, with gorgeous brick walls, lovely patios and a full menu. Get started with their signature Uniontown IPA and delicious food.

Named for the river flowing through Shelby, the family-run Black Fork Brewing features a modern, barnlike tasting room. One original brew is their chocolatey porter!

ON THE SCENE

RUTHIE GOOD with

A Mansfield resident for 50 years, Ruthie Good didn’t own a bicycle until she was 24. Now, she can’t imagine a life without her 10-speed. This long-time member of the Mid-Ohio Bike Club (always open to new members!) has pedaled the B&O Bike Trail since the day it opened 30 years ago. From mid-March into November, Good and up to eight riders regularly hit the trail.

What’s your favorite part of the trail? I love the whole thing. Each section is different depending on the season — in the spring there are wildflowers; in summer, there’s more tree canopy for shade. The club votes to determine which way we’ll ride. Each direction has different sights like cows grazing and signs of beaver activity. Keep an eye out for murals, particularly those under Fourth Street and Park Avenue W., painted by high school students.

Any riding essentials and tips? Remember that riding is for all ages — our oldest member is 88! A bike helmet and a side mirror to monitor traffic are essential, and I always have water and a power bar. In the fall, be careful of wet leaves and nuts on the trail. In spring and summer, keep an eye out for chipmunks as they dart across the trail. One time a chipmunk took a ride on the rim of my bike and then ran away!

THE MANSFIELD ART CENTER

The Mansfield Art Center facilitates and supports the artistic development of the members of our community through focused instruction and access to the works of thousands of professional artists. Our new Education Wing offers art classes in: glassblowing, stained glass, drawing, painting, ceramics, silk painting, jewelry making, printmaking, fiber arts, rug tufting, 3d printing, and design technology. This award-winning addition features vaulted ceilings and modern floor to ceiling windows that allow for an abundance

of natural light and open workspace in the state of the art studios. Exhibitions are featured in the work of art that is Don Hisaka’s original architectural edifice. This incredible structure won a Progressive Architecture National Citation Award in 1971 for its innovative beauty. Visitors enjoy two floors of open galleries amidst a wood hewn atrium, a Gallery Shop highlighting the handcrafted work of local artists, and many exhibitions featuring original art throughout the year.

Since our beginning in 1945 as The Mansfield Fine Arts Guild, we have grown to not only show the work of local and regional artists but have expanded to also house exhibitions of nationally and internationally renowned artists. The Mansfield Art Center continues to build on our rich history and pursue our mission of enhancing lives through art.
