ON THE COVER

THIS MURAL SERIES IS REALLY A CELEBRATION OF COLUMBUS.

Columbus artist Carly Mitchell of C.E. Mitchell Design shares her vision of Columbus with her mural shown on the cover of the Visitor Guide. It’s one of several large-scale murals she created inside the new Columbus Welcome Center in the Short North Arts District at 625 N. High St. The murals showcase key local landmarks, including the Scioto Lounge Deer sculptures found around the city, Ohio Stadium, the Scioto Mile and more — creating photo-worthy moments.

“This mural series is really a celebration of Columbus,” Mitchell says. “I wanted it to feel welcoming and familiar, so whether you’ve lived here for 20 years or you’re visiting for the first time, it sparks a little curiosity and makes you want to explore more of what Columbus has to offer.”

MEET THE LOVE IS BLIND SINGLES

These seven fan favorites share the spots they love in Columbus.

How would you spend a perfect 24 hours in Columbus?

Christine: Coffee and breakfast at Fox in the Snow, then a walk at Quarry Trails Metro Park. Hit up the Short North Arts District or Easton for a little shopping, grab Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams and see something artsy (comedy show, museum, live music). Get dinner at one of the many good Italian restaurants, then grab a drink from a chill speakeasy or lounge.

Jessica: I would sleep in, go to Joya’s for breakfast and walk around Worthington — especially when the farmers market is going on! Then I would pop home and get cute, have some Italian food and espresso martinis, go to District West for a drag show, sing karaoke at Mickey’s Bar and then close down Oddfellows Liquor Bar.

Go duckpin bowling — a fun night out for couples or a bunch of friends — like the group did on the show.

Topiary Park

Walk amid art at this re-creation in topiary of Georges Seurat’s painting

A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte — a romantic spot where Christine and Vic talked about building a life together.

Otherworld/Gamegrounds

Be mesmerized by the science-fiction fantasy setting at Otherworld, just like Amber and Jordan. It’s perfect for families, too — Amber says it’s one of her daughter’s favorites. Head next door to play at Gamegrounds.

What’s one Columbus spot you’d tell a friend they must visit?

Jordan: Outdoor concert at KEMBA Live! during the summer!

Emma: Wario’s Beef & Pork.

What’s your favorite place to eat in Columbus?

Vic: Forno Kitchen + Bar any day of the week. Christine: Cento! I love Italian food and they have amazing food and great ambiance. A girl needs both!

What’s your favorite Columbus neighborhood and why?

Jessica: The Short North Arts District — it’s lively and fun with so much to do!

Emma: German Village — you can spend a whole day here walking around Schiller Park, exploring the little shops and The Book Loft, and stopping for great eats and coffee.

What’s your favorite place to take someone on a first date in Columbus?

Mike: Butcher & Rose.

Keya: I don’t take men on first dates, but I do love Stories on High!

In one sentence, how would you describe Columbus to someone who’s never been?

Jessica: The most exciting and vibrant city I know that still has that small-town feel!

Christine: Columbus is a big-hearted Midwest city with cute coffee shops, yummy food and lots of Buckeye pride.

NOVEL NOTES

Columbus has creative roots, evident through the abundance of writers and other creators who have started here and gone on to national recognition.

LET’S GET LITERARY

Meet hundreds of authors and illustrators at the Columbus Book Festival on July 11–12 at the Columbus Metropolitan Library. At the Thurber House Summer Literary Picnics, you can literally pack a picnic while you hear award-winning authors speak and read their work! Cartoon Crossroads Columbus brings together world-renowned comic book artists, illustrators and writers every September. Also in September, The Poetry Festival hosts readings, workshops, performances and poetry-inspired artwork at multiple locations.

Columbus is home to several acclaimed authors, but its most prolific hometown hero is R.L. Stine. Most famous for his Goosebumps series, Stine grew up in Bexley and attended The Ohio State University. When he returns to his hometown, he loves visiting Gramercy Books and speaks highly of the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum, home to the largest collection of cartoons and comics in the world.

What’s your favorite Columbus meal?

A classic pepperoni from Rubino’s Pizza. I have it in my freezer in New York. They overnight it to me half-baked on dry ice. I just throw it in the oven for five minutes, and I have Rubino’s Pizza in New York.

What spot in Columbus holds some of your favorite memories?

They showed the Goosebumps movie at the Drexel Theatre, which was a real thrill for me because that’s where my brother and I used to go every Saturday morning when we were kids.

Tell us about a funny moment from your childhood. Every year we would trick or treat at the Governor’s Mansion — it was two blocks away. We’d go up that long driveway and up to the front porch, and every year they gave out apples. Nobody would take the apples, and we would heave them down the driveway.

THE LOOM IS WHERE THE NEXT GENERATION OF FASHION CREATORS, ENTREPRENEURS

AND INNOVATORS

ARE BEING BUILT — RIGHT HERE IN COLUMBUS.

FASHION FORWARD

Columbus is one of the top destinations for fashion design in the country! From fashion shows to independent retailers to world-class designers, Columbus knows fashion. In fact, the city is home to the highest concentration of professionals working in the apparel and fashion industry in the U.S.

In 2026, Columbus fashion is set to take a big step forward with the opening of The LOOM, a fashion incubator and cultural hub that will serve as the new headquarters for the Columbus Fashion Alliance and a space for up-and-coming designers.

“What excites me the most about The LOOM is it will be the first time the retail industry and greater fashion community will have a home in Columbus,” says Yohannan Terrell, director of the Columbus Fashion Alliance. “It will be a space where anyone who’s either curious, emerging or a legend in the fashion industry will have a chance to collide and collaborate.”

FASHIONABLE EVENTS

The next generation of fashion designers are showcased at the CCAD Fashion Show every May when the Columbus College of Art & Design graduating fashion design students show their collections. In September, the Columbus Fashion Council’s Columbus Fashion Week features emerging designers at fashion shows.

ONE OF AMERICA’S NEXT GREAT FOOD CITIES ~FOOD&WINE

ONE

OF

AMERICA’S MOST THRILLING FOOD CITIES ~AFAR

A CUT ABOVE

Husband-and-wife duo Andrew Smith and Devoney Mills are the very image of hospitality, inviting guests to communal seats for their tasting menus at Isla in Merion Village. Each dinner brings together strangers for a dynamic tasting menu of seven or eight courses that rotates regularly.

The word is out: Columbus is a newsworthy dining destination! Food & Wine called us one of America’s next great food cities, while Condé Nast Traveler readers ranked us one of the 10 best food cities in the U.S. above cities like Las Vegas and New York.

Already well respected for his Downtown favorites Veritas and Speck Italian Eatery, chef Josh Dalton is bringing two more concepts to the city core. First up is Rosalita, a contemporary Mexican eatery near Gay and High streets; the second is Amara, a Mediterranean spot with a large patio overlooking the Scioto Mile.

Chef Avishar Barua has become a familiar face on national cooking competitions. In Old Worthington, he runs Joya’s Cafe, named for his mother and featuring a blend of Bengali-American fare. Agni in the Brewery District features a multi-course dining experience with global inspiration.

Josh Dalton

Chef & Restaurateur

Chef Josh Dalton has distinguished himself with multiple Columbus eateries, from modern Italian at Speck Italian Eatery to world-class tasting menus at Veritas. We chatted with him about his inspirations and goals for 2026, as well as what he loves about Columbus.

What inspired your two upcoming concepts?

Honestly, it all comes back to travel. The older I get, the more I realize how much the world has to teach us. When you go to Mexico, you fall in love with the people, the culture, the depth of it all — you discover there’s so much more than what we typically see here. Same thing happened when I visited Istanbul, Greece and Spain. I kept realizing the Mediterranean isn’t just one thing. Every region, every little pocket has its own beautiful way of doing things, and that’s what we want to celebrate.

Where do you continue to draw inspiration for developing Veritas’ menus?

We gather the entire team — kitchen and front of house — and just start talking. What sounds exciting to us right now? What would be fun to explore?

Aside from your own restaurants, where do you like to eat out in Columbus?

If I can get to The Lox Bagel Shop early enough to beat the crowd, I’m there. But honestly, what Columbus does best is ethnic food — that’s where our city really shines. I love N.E. Chinese, Jiu Thai — there are so many great spots. There’s always something new to discover here, and I wish I had more time to really sit and enjoy it all.

YEARS OF NORTH MARKET

Over the past century and a half, North Market has become a mainstay of Columbus’ dining and cultural scene and has watched the city grow around it. The North Market was originally one of four public markets; when its building burned down in 1948, the merchants banded together to buy a Quonset hut next to it, where the market remained before it moved to its current renovated warehouse in 1995. Today the market is better than ever, a popular spot for visitors and residents who want to get a taste of Columbus. A diverse array of vendors serves everything from ice cream to fresh produce and seafood to pastries, along with prepared foods from all around the world.

NORTH MARKET

FOUR TO TASTE

1 The family-run Hoyo’s Kitchen offers a fast casual take on traditional Somali fare.

2 Momo Ghar delights visitors with their Nepalese and Tibetan cuisine, like fiery johl momo dumplings.

3 Hubert’s Polish Kitchen offers scratch-made comfort food like pierogi, stuffed cabbage and kielbasa.

4 North Market Spices features a global array of spices, seasonings and other ingredients.

FIVE FOOD FESTIVALS

Held at the Franklin County Fairgrounds every August, the Columbus Food Truck Festival features nearly 50 food trucks! Celebrate the modern tomato at the Reynoldsburg Tomato Festival on Aug. 13–15 with contests, a pageant and the Tomato War. Every October the Columbus Coffee Festival brings together dozens of roasters and brewers for tastings. For more than a century, the Circleville Pumpkin Show, set for Oct. 21–24, has celebrated all things pumpkin — from pies to donuts to chili.

Mike Cairns

Columbus Drone Photographer

Mike Cairns sees Columbus from an elevated, unexpected vantage point. As co-owner of Infinite Impact and Aerial Image Solutions, he has captured striking drone photography of the city, from glowing skyline sunsets to hidden Scioto River gems. Though his work spans the globe and his travels have taken him around the world, his lens always finds its way back home.

What are your keys to creating drone images that stand out in such a visual world?

Seeing familiar places from entirely new perspectives creates a sense of discovery and adventure. That fresh vantage point is what excites me the most and drives my photography.

What keeps inspiring you about Columbus and its evolving skyline?

We document major projects from the ground up, often before the public sees them, giving us a unique connection to the city’s transformation.

What are your favorite places to photograph?

Canoeing the Scioto to the Ohio River with my son and team was unforgettable — and the images matched the experience.
