Kate Fineske
National Museum of the Great Lakes
As Executive Director at National Museum of the Great Lakes (NMGL), Kate Fineske blends her love for Toledo, passion for culture and flare for community building to raise the museum’s profile and impact.
“One of the things I love about this museum is how it surpasses people’s expectations every time,” Fineske says. Under her leadership, NMGL has achieved major milestones, including a New York Times feature, welcoming cruise ships back to Toledo after decades and illuminating the Col. James M. Schoonmaker museum ship — offering the best downtown view, according to Fineske.
These successes are not without the support of her hardworking museum team, trusted partners throughout the city and generous donors from around the corner and around the world.
“It has really taken my confidence to the next level, knowing the work and team we’ve pulled together can do big things for Toledo and the Great Lakes,” Fineske says. Outside the museum, Fineske enjoys exploring the Metroparks, cheering on the Rockets and Mud Hens and savoring Toledo’s local flavors at Poco Piatti and Maumee Bay Brewing Co.

As America approaches its 250th anniversary, it’s the perfect time to celebrate Toledo ingenuity that profoundly shaped our nation’s commerce and culture.
1. Beep Beep First built by Willys-Overland for World War II, the Jeep’s (LEFT) rugged spirit lives on in Toledo, home of the massive Assembly Complex and proud “Jeep Capital” of the world. The city celebrates this heritage annually at the Toledo Jeep Fest.
3. Crucial Commerce Connector
More than a scenic view, the Lake Erie to Maumee Waterway helped establish Toledo’s economy as a major trade hub in the 1800s. Discover this crucial maritime history at the National Museum of the Great Lakes (RIGHT)
2. The Glass City Toledo’s legacy shines through innovators like Edward Drummond Libbey (LEFT) Local glassmakers pioneered safety glass for GM windshields and ignited the global Studio Glass Movement — making the city’s history both practical and beautiful.
4. Weighing In Founded by Henry Theobald, the Toledo Scale Company introduced its cylinder scale (RIGHT) in 1906. These scales quickly made their way into grocery stores across the nation, raising expectations for honest business practices.
5. The Perfect Scoop Nearly 100 years ago in his Toledo garage, inventor Sherman Kelly created the Zeroll ice cream scoop (LEFT) . Its heat-conductive handle let the scoop roll smoothly without compressing — an ingenious design that became the industry standard

Dean Davis Local Artist
When Toledo native Dean Davis lifts his brush, he reveals art’s power to inspire pride and brighten tomorrow. The prolific muralist — best known as lead artist on the Glass City River Wall — and owner of Art Farm and River Gallery Studio believes color can heal.
“The goal is to put as much color on these spaces that don’t have them as possible,” says Davis. “It’s to give people a reason to smile, especially during the winter.” And the impact extends beyond the walls. Through his murals, Davis connects communities, celebrates their roots and sparks renewal across northwest Ohio.

“In the last five years of public art service, I’ve realized how uplifting this can be for these communities,” he says. Central to that vision is the River Gallery Project along the Maumee River, which will transform Toledo’s industrial and intrepid past into the world’s largest collection of riverfront open-air art. Explore a farm partially restored to a haven for native species at Cannonball Prairie Metropark . Book a primitive campsite to experience the late-night symphony of critter calls. See 400 million-year-old limestone exposed at the Bowling Green Fault, visible in Farnsworth Metropark , also offering primitive camping. Hike the trails, bask on the beach, enjoy the observation deck and renovated boardwalk (set to open this summer) and more at the sprawling Maumee Bay State Park , which offers campsites and a full-service lodge featuring dazzling lakefront views.
Birding Mania
Did you know some of the best bird watching in the world happens right here in northwest Ohio? Join people from across the globe who flock to the marshes along Lake Erie each spring for Black Swamp
Bird Observatory’s major annual event, the Biggest Week in American Birding, May 8–17, 2026, to coincide with peak migration. Colorful neo-tropical warblers from South and Central America and other migrants fly thousands of miles and stop in the marshes to rest before crossing Lake Erie, making the area a fantastic spot to see rare birds. To find the best viewing points, check out the Lake Erie Birding Trail and order your official guide book to the marshes and hundreds of species you might spy. Birding favorites and reliable spots include: Magee Marsh Wildlife Area near Oak Harbor; Howard Marsh Metropark in Curtice; over in Oregon, Pearson Metropark and Maumee Bay State Park, especially its boardwalk; Oak Openings Preserve in Swanton and the Toledo Botanical Garden and Wildwood Preserve Metropark in Toledo.

Seasonal Favorites
As the seasons change, opportunities to explore change with them, from apple and pumpkin picking to ice skating to spring farm life. During colder months, The Ribbon, a 1,000-foot-long skating trail at
Glass City Metropark, is full of gleeful ice skaters, and its rentable cabanas brim with groups enjoying a cozy outing together. For fall lovers, Fleitz Pumpkin Farm in Oregon is a family tradition of hayrides, pumpkin-picking, corn mazes and apple cider donuts. Enjoy scary fun at Sandusky’s Ghostly Manor Thrill Center, serving up frights, roller skating and more throughout the year, and The Haunted Hydro in Fremont remains a long-standing tradition of bone-chilling Halloween fun inside a 1910 shuttered hydraulic plant. More family fun awaits at Bowlander Farm in Genoa, where you can feed farm animals, milk a cow, pick pumpkins and take on the corn maze each fall, while the Easter Bunny makes an appearance during Easter weekends. In summer months, pick your own peaches at MacQueen Orchards in Holland and come back to harvest apples in the fall. Wander the flower field at GardenView Flowers in Grand Rapids and hand cut the perfect blooms to you create your own beautiful bouquet. Flutter through the Butterfly House at Wheeler Farms in Whitehouse each summer, then come back to explore a 16-acre corn maze in the fall and cut your own Christmas tree for the holidays.

In getting here, travelers at the Eugene F. Kranz Toledo Express Airport — the first airport in the U.S. to become a Certified Autism Center — can take advantage of a quiet and safe space in the renovated sensory room. The airport also has an Experience Flyer who walks guests through the travel process and additional information as part of the AccessTOL program found on its website.
CERTIFIED AUTISM CENTERS
At the newly renovated National Museum of the Great Lakes, the pilot house of the St. Mary’s Challenger is accessible from the museum, allowing people of all abilities to enjoy a hands-on slice of maritime life. The museum itself is fully ADA accessible and has regular sensory friendly programming. Through an ongoing commitment to building a more inclusive museum, Toledo Museum of Art
offers touch tours for blind and low-vision guests, noise-canceling headphones and sensory kits, plus an app with alttext to images, screen-reader support, multilingual capabilities and more. Have an adventure at one of Metroparks Toledo’s 19 pristine parks. Adaptive spaces and playground equipment are found throughout the parks, and with advanced notice, staff can adapt many programs to be accessible for anyone. The Toledo Zoo & Aquarium has a wide variety of accommodations through its Zoo for All program; expect wheelchair and scooter rentals, adult changing tables, complimentary sensory bags, an ADAaccessible train and carousel rides, and sighted guide tours for those who are blind or have low vision. Doing some shopping? At Franklin Park Mall, wheelchairs are available for free at the Mobility Center near Dick’s Sporting Goods. Festive holiday events offer specific sensory-friendly times for photos with Santa or the Easter Bunny.
Frontline staff at Certified Autism Centers (CACs) throughout the Toledo area have been undergoing training and certification from the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standard. This agency helps hotels, attractions and other businesses to better serve people with autism and their families and take the stress out of planning trips for their guests.

It’s easy to make friends in Toledo. Advocating for the LGBTQ+ community (with events like its flagship fashion fiesta, Flaunt) is Equality Toledo’s mission. The Collective cares for the queer Black community, creating safe spaces like the “Family” Reunion, uniting chosen and blood relatives around shared pride.
“We have anything and everything a
guest might need.”
Landon King The Kings Throne Inn and Guest House
Landon King’s inspiration for opening The Kings Throne, a historic inn and welcoming guesthouse in the Old West End, arose from two very different places: Europe and smalltown Ohio. Stays at bed and breakfasts in Bulgaria and Greece paired with a love of historic architecture in his hometown of West Liberty first set him on the path to innkeeping. And in 2021, inspiration became reality.
“There are little personal touches everywhere,” King says of the 1892 mansion. Careful updates have kept original architecture on display top to bottom, accented by art and family heirlooms. It’s been a rewarding
venture for him and the many guests whose rave reviews have made The Kings Throne a favorite stay in the Glass City.
“We have anything and everything a guest might need if they didn’t bring anything with them,” says King. His experience as a diversity and inclusion ambassador has also served visitors well.
The Toledo Museum of Art, within walking distance of the inn, is one of King’s top recommendations. And like most locals, he’s a big advocate of the city’s parks. “I like Wildwood Metropark,” says King, “and my dog Luna likes it, too!”

The Sw eet Spot
When Claire Cameron-Ruetz left her job as a physician in 2020, she started filling her free time with baking, a hobby that had always soothed her during times of stress. Soon she was creating ambitious baked goods that she gave away to neighbors, who suggested she turn her talent into a business. Thus was born the Dollop Shop — a now-thriving bakery where everything is made from scratch. Locals find it to be a cozy spot for book clubs, cocktail nights, baking classes, high teas and other special events.
“It’s really cool to be a place that people feel belongs to them,” says Cameron-Ruetz, who
hails from Toledo. “I see people taking ownership of it, and it makes me feel excited and happy.” Customers from all over Toledo stop in for their favorites, including cinnamon rolls, chocolate croissants and everything bagel Danish.
“Toledo is such a cool place because it’s a city, but has a small-town vibe,” Cameron-Ruetz explains. “It feels good to be a part of that. I feel excited to be contributing to this great food scene we have here.” In her spare time, she and her husband, Zach, love taking their son and dog to local Metroparks — Wildwood, Secor and Oak Openings are among their favorites. They also enjoy the local running scene.

Romantic Escapes
Historic inns and hotels offer tinged-withromance hideaways — conveniently close to the best that Toledo has to offer for romcom-worthy getaways.
Downtown’s century-old Hotel Royal, originally a railroad-hotel, is newly restored, offering guests an autonomous pocketsized getaway in the perfect location to explore all the nearby downtown dining and attractions. Exposed brick, equinethemed art and five distinctive units add up to an eccentrically elegant hotel.
In nearby Maumee, The Federal Inn elevates the B&B experience with delectable breakfasts like lemon-ricotta pancakes, seasonal fruit compotes and locally roasted espresso. Guests speak highly of the inn’s personalized service and the option to reserve the entire threebedroom property for a private stay.
Back in the Old West End, The Kings Throne Inn and Guest House serves refined comfort: warm scones at sunrise, afternoon tea and champagne on request. The 1892 mansion’s grand Victorian suites and plush robes set the stage for a chic and cultured weekend near the Toledo Museum of Art.
Stays for the Family Toledo’s lodging scene blends Midwestern charm with modern polish, offering full-family stays that span from waterfront luxury to woodland whimsy.
At the city’s center, the Renaissance Toledo Downtown Hotel is a standout location for families, offering modern, spacious rooms and a direct indoor connection to Imagination Station, perfect for curious kids to explore.
A few blocks away, the recently renovated Hilton Garden Inn and adjoining Homewood Suites — known collectively as the Hiltons at Toledo Downtown — make traveling with little ones easy, offering family-friendly layouts, connecting rooms and guest laundry. Homewood Suites also features in-room kitchenettes, complimentary breakfast and river views, while Hilton Garden Inn overlooks Fifth Third Field, where kids can spot the Toledo Mud Hens in action. For families planning a zoo visit, the Delta Hotels by Marriott Toledo is a reliable pick, featuring an indoor pool for a splash of fun and a convenient location near the Toledo Zoo.
Kids will flip over Toledo’s most unusual lodging destination, located inside Oak Openings Preserve Metropark. Cannaley Treehouse Village is nestled into a section of restored oak savanna and sand dunes connected by trails, boardwalks and bike paths. The village includes five elevated cabins (two are ADA-accessible) and three tent platforms linked by sturdy wooden walkways. Built by Metroparks Toledo, it’s the only public treehouse village in the country.
To the east, Maumee Bay Lodge & Conference Center opens onto a wide stretch of Lake Erie shoreline. Nestled in a state park, days with the crew can begin with a hike through cattails, a round of golf or a paddle across the inland lake and end with s’mores under the stars. Beyond the main lodge, accommodations include the four-bedroom Reunion Cabin, which sleeps up to 18, and a scattering of two- and four-bedroom stone-and-timber cabins tucked along the shore.

Central District
Step into the vibrant heart of downtown Toledo. Live steps from concerts, ballgames and bars in stunning lofts like the 30-story Tower on the Maumee and the pet-friendly Commodore Perry Apartments. Depending on the season, cheer on Mud Hens baseball, bring the family to catch Toledo Walleye Hockey or savor dinner before a show at the Huntington Center. The Central District invites you to embrace an energetic, walkable lifestyle where every block hums with culture, convenience and opportunity. Downtown living doesn’t get more dynamic than this.
Warehouse District
Discover where Toledo’s industrial past meets its modern spirit. As the neighborhood that anchors downtown Toledo, the Warehouse District thrives with local flavor and positive momentum — rooftop patios, reimagined historic buildings and major events light up the streets. Covering 33 blocks of homes, businesses and restaurants, the district includes Fifth Third Field, home of the iconic Toledo Mud Hens minor-league baseball. Catch a game, stroll to Hensville concerts, savor local grub and pubs or settle into stylish living spaces such as The Berdan, Standart Lofts or the recently
opened The Produce Lofts. Every brick tells a story; every night brings new energy in downtown’s social, walkable and authentically urban neighborhood.
Riverfront District
Wake up to river views and endless recreation on the Maumee River. The Riverfront District delivers the best of Toledo’s renaissance: walk the Glass City Riverwalk , skate The Ribbon or paddle the Maumee at sunset. At Marina Lofts, enjoy upscale loft living steps from waterfront dining, festivals and parks. Fort Industry Square, sandwiched by two city parks, combines office, retail and luxury residential spaces along the river. Live where the water sparkles and the future is bright — the city’s master plan has targeted hundreds more riverfront acres for redevelopment.
Middlegrounds
Experience city living with a refreshing dose of nature. A major draw to this emerging neighborhood is Middlegrounds Metropark, offering trails, river views, a kayak launch and spacious dog park, all adjacent to the downtown Warehouse District. Proudly standing as the anchor of Middlegrounds is the historic Oliver House, housing Maumee Bay Brewing Co., Rockwell’s Steakhouse, Sweet Nate’s Coffee and 14 charming apartments for rent. In addition, Middlegrounds is home to the corporate headquarters of Owens Corning. Discover a community that embraces active living and fresh air — where you can work downtown, play by the water and relax amid wide-open spaces and riverfront beauty.
“People love their neighborhoods. Our job is to understand and empathize as sincerely as possible.”
Ryan A. Bunch
Toledo Design Collective
Across Toledo, traces of the 25-year-old Toledo Design Collective’s community engagement and development work are shaping how people live, work and gather. As studio director, Ryan Bunch leads projects that turn community ideas into lasting public spaces — efforts that visitors can see firsthand along the Glass City Riverwalk, in the Junction neighborhood and on the revitalized Dorr-to-Adams corridor.
“We’re one of just 60 civic design centers in the nation,” Bunch says. “Our role is to develop, educate and advocate for more inclusive and higher-quality design, planning and infrastructure.” From reconnecting neighborhoods cut off by I-75 to helping residents rediscover long-overlooked waterways like Swan Creek, Bunch and his
team are re-stitching Toledo’s fabric, one thoughtful project at a time. “People love their neighborhoods,” he says. “Our job is to understand and empathize as sincerely as possible — to be good stewards of the time they take to share their lives with us.” Bunch likes to experience the city like any proud Toledoan or traveler. “My wife and I have lived in the Old West End for 20 years,” he says, “and I still notice new architectural details.” He suggests lunch at Harvest or Tandoor Indian Cuisine, followed by a stroll at Oak Openings Preserve. “The sound of the trains from Middlegrounds Metropark is one of my favorite sounds on the planet,” he says. “And when it’s time to relax, I’m on Adams Street — every spot there feels like home.”

Explore Toledo’s sparkling new Glass City Riverwalk — a scenic path connecting the city’s vibrant downtown with its waterfront wonders. You’ll find parks, play places and sweeping views of the Maumee River and downtown skyline. Once an industrial edge, the corridor has been reimagined as a linear urban sanctuary inviting you to explore by foot, skates or kayak. Along the way, the route links signature green spaces such as Glass City Metropark — home to The Ribbon, a 1,000-foot paved trail loop that curves through the landscape — and Middlegrounds Metropark, a quiet waterside retreat. // BY SARAH MILLER
The suburbs have been hard at work building walkable downtowns, outdoor amenities and spaces designed for connection.
Each community brings its own appeal. Maumee, Perrysburg , Waterville and Grand Rapids invite visitors and residents to stroll historic streets, dine locally and enjoy riverfront views along the Maumee River. Oregon and Point Place attract boaters, anglers and lake lovers with numerous marinas and Lake Erie access. Sylvania and Ottawa Hills are hubs for golf and tennis enthusiasts. Rossford blends entertainment, dining and a charming main street, all minutes from downtown Toledo.
While the good vibes never change, exciting developments keep Toledo’s communities evolving. Driving over the river, Maumee invites people with a new look. The makeover includes a more pedestrian-friendly area with new sidewalks, improved lighting and
additional street parking to make shopping and dining accessible. New decorative arches welcome visitors to “Uptown Maumee” as part of the Conant Street Project . More trees and better pedestrian flow is the goal to revitalize Maumee. Another recent addition? Take the ADAaccessible paved path that follows the Maumee River into Side Cut Metropark. Just across the river, Perrysburg plans to update its historic 1800s downtown with ADA upgrades while keeping the historic charm. To showcase the local shops and restaurants downtown is
known for, the Perrysburg Downtown Revitalization Project will bring larger walkways and places to congregate. Cobblestone, brick and community gathering spots with cozy seating and lush landscape will further enhance the city’s events like the Farmers Market, Homecoming Festival and Winterfest.
Sylvania, too, has been updating with new sidewalks, lighting and greenery to bring a fresh look to the downtown streets, already lined with local businesses, galleries and restaurants. Sylvania’s Downtown Improvement Project brings more areas for community gathering with the added benefit of accessibility. The developments are a complement to the new interchange at U.S. Route 23 and Monroe Street.
Oregon is known for Maumee Bay State Park, Lake Erie access and its quiet family-friendly community, but it’s never had a true downtown. The Oregon Town Center will fill that void with a mixed use of living spaces and retail outlets. With anchor stores and tenants like Starbucks and Chick-fil-A leading the way, along with 220 apartments and a new home development, the town center will serve as Oregon’s community hub. Plans for a concert venue and other recreational amenities are on the horizon.

Higher Ed
Graduating seniors and those seeking continuing education need not look far (if at all) outside the city limits for highquality undergrad and graduate programs.
The University of Toledo, consistently ranked among the best colleges and universities in the country by U.S. News and World Report, offers 250 degree programs and a vibrant student life. Its top-notch pharmacy program boasts a 98% job placement rate within three months of graduation, and its highly regarded engineering and law schools provide a fast track to the top of the Principles and Practice of Engineering and bar exams.
Nearby, Bowling Green State University inspires future educators with its acclaimed teaching programs, including specialized degrees in language, arts and science education. Likewise, its media and communications school is readying a new generation of journalists and advertising professionals for the ever-evolving, modern media landscape.
Other area colleges offer innovative entries into secure careers. Davis University is a reliable repository of associate degrees for in-demand fields such as graphic design, logistics and supply chain management, whereas Owens Community College excels in hospitality management, medical technology and advanced manufacturing. Meanwhile, Mercy College of Ohio brings nursing and other healthcare degrees within reach of working students.

Our Industries
Toledo’s industrial heritage isn’t just the past — it’s the city’s present and future. Legacy industries, like glass and auto manufacturing, thrive and innovate while the city attracts new sectors.
The glass business lent Toledo its nickname, and it retains a clear future. The city and region are home to the global headquarters of drinkware giant Libbey, leading bottle manufacturer O-I Glass and fiberglass powerhouse Owens Corning , and houses several facilities for architectural and automotive glazier NSG Group
Cars make Toledo’s wheels turn. General Motors builds powertrains and transmissions at its local propulsion plant, while Jeep brand vehicles roll off Stellantis’s assembly line. Automotive parts suppliers including Veoneer-Nissin Brake Systems, module maker Mobis North America and drivetrain manufacturer Dana Incorporated maintain robust local operations.
Energy fuels Toledo. Oil refiners Cenovus and PBF Energy are ramping up production to meet needs, while Marathon Petroleum’s Findlay headquarters strengthen corporate careers in the region. First Energy’s northwest Ohio grid enhancements are powering additional opportunities. In the heart of downtown Toledo, Glass City Center anchors the Central Business District, showcasing a 16,000-sq.-ft. grand ballroom wrapped in glass and overlooking Fifth Third Field — an unforgettable setting for any meeting group. Nearby, The Mez
keeps its industrial frame intact with exposed beams, concrete floors and high ceilings, creating a perfect setting for receptions, parties and presentations. Around the corner, The Summit opens its tall glass garage doors to the street, flooding the space with natural light
during weddings and corporate events. Over in the Warehouse District, The Arches at Hannon’s Block features 19th-century brickwork and iron columns from the building’s 1870s origins. Beneath the restored vaults, chefs serve walleye, braised short ribs and seasonal vegetables at corporate dinners and private events.
When you host events at worldclass attractions, you set the stage for unforgettable experiences. The venerable Toledo Museum of Art offers gatherings surrounded by priceless masterpieces in a building that is itself a work of art, while just across the street, the museum’s Glass Pavilion dazzles guests with its curved
transparent walls and renowned glass collection. At the Toledo Zoo & Aquarium, many celebrations take place amidst the animal habitats. The grand Malawi Event Center is just steps from the African savanna, while the aquarium provides a more intimate event space set among sparkling fish tanks and marine life. The National Museum of the Great Lakes recently added modern event spaces that offer stunning views of the Maumee River, creating a memorable setting for gatherings of all kinds. For a more casual setting, Fifth Third Field, home of the Toledo Mud Hens, offers suites and rooftop venues with direct views of the diamond. During private events, guests
enjoy perch tacos and Bavarian pretzels, topped off by Maumee Bay IPAs from local brewery favorite, Maumee Bay Brewing Co.
Waterfront views are never far in this port city. Set along the Maumee River in Glass City Metropark, the Glass City Pavilion serves as the park’s main event space. This contemporary glasswalled venue with skyline views also provides handy access to the riverfront trails and green space. Further east, Maumee Bay Lodge & Conference Center pairs overnight accommodations and meeting space with access to trails, wetland boardwalks and the stunning Lake Erie shoreline.
