Spring into Action with the Sarasota Chamber
Springtime in Sarasota is a season of energy and momentum. As our community comes alive with sunshine, longer days, and a renewed sense of possibility, it’s also the perfect time for businesses to refocus, reconnect, and invest in their people. At the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce, this season brings a number of meaningful opportunities for our members to engage, grow, and strengthen their teams.
One of the best ways to build relationships in business is simply by spending time together, and our Sarasota Chamber Golf Classic at The Founders Golf Club offers the perfect setting to do just that. This annual event brings together business leaders from across our region for a day of networking, camaraderie, and friendly competition on one of Sarasota’s most beautiful courses. One of the greatest privileges of serving as Chairman of the Board of the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce is witnessing the extraordinary work being done by businesses and organizations throughout our community. Sarasota is filled with leaders who innovate, serve, and elevate the quality of life for all who live and work here. The Frank G. Berlin Sarasota Business Awards exist to celebrate those accomplishments—and I am excited to share that registration for the 2026 awards is now open.
Each year, the Sarasota Chamber recognizes outstanding businesses and organizations across a variety of categories that represent the strength, diversity, and entrepreneurial spirit of our local economy. A Bold Start to 2026
The Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce welcomed the new year in remarkable fashion at the New Year’s Kick-Off Brunch, presented by Brown & Brown, hosted at the stunning Mote Marine Science Education Aquarium (SEA) at Nathan Benderson Park.
The morning opened with a memorable moment as Dr. Michael Crosby, President & CEO of Mote, introduced the program — followed by the dramatic unveiling of the aquarium wall, where sharks glided into view, creating an aweinspiring backdrop that set the tone for the year ahead.
Guests enjoyed a beautifully prepared breakfast while connecting with fellow business and community leaders in a setting unlike any other. The program featured a timely and insightful economic outlook from nationally recognized economist Dr. Sean Snaith, who offered thoughtful analysis and forward-looking perspectives to help members navigate 2026 with confidence.
A highlight of the morning was the presentation
of the Spirit of Sarasota Award to Dr. Larry Thompson, recognizing his exceptional leadership and lasting contributions to our community.
The Chamber extends sincere appreciation to Brown & Brown and all of our generous sponsors for their partnership, and to Mote for hosting us in such an extraordinary space. Together, we began 2026 informed, inspired, and deeply connected to the strength of our region.

Party on the Bay: Aloha on the Bay
Under glowing sunset skies and swaying palms, the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce welcomed the community to an unforgettable evening at the iconic Powel Crosley Estate for this year’s Party on the Bay
One of Sarasota’s most anticipated waterfront traditions, the event delivered an atmosphere as vibrant as the Gulf Coast itself. Guests explored colorful vendor experiences, sampled exceptional local flavors, and enjoyed live entertainment set against sweeping bayfront views. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the energy remained high and the spirit of aloha carried throughout the evening.
More than a celebration, Party on the Bay was a reflection of what makes our region thrive — meaningful connections, collaborative partnerships, and a shared commitment to supporting local businesses.

Suncoast Technical College CNA participants spent a day building confidence and career readiness with Dr. Roth. Through soft skills development and resume refinement, these future healthcare professionals strengthened their tools for success and took important steps toward launching their careers.
HVAC & Plumbing FastTrack Update
Hands-on learning was in full swing at American Vocational Academy (AVA), where HVAC and plumbing trainees practiced brazing and built circuit boards themselves. This cohort of 24 students is gaining skills, confidence, and career-ready experience. CareerEdge proudly funded seven participants, helping expand access to these in-demand trades. A waitlist is already forming for the Fall 2026 cohort, highlighting the continued enthusiasm for skilled trade careers in our region.

Throughout these experiences, participants have connected with local leaders, gained behind-the-scenes insight into key sectors, and deepened their understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing the Sarasota region.

UPDATE ADVOCACY
The Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce continues to advocate for policies that strengthen the region’s business climate and support long-term economic growth. Throughout the year, the Chamber works closely with local, state, and federal leaders to ensure the voice of Sarasota’s business community is represented in key policy discussions.
LEGISLATIVE & POLICY UPDATES
The Chamber recently participated in the Florida Chamber Legislative Fly-In in Tallahassee January 13th & 14th, meeting with members of the Sarasota legislative delegation to discuss priorities important to local employers. Key issues included workforce development, housing attainability, insurance reform, childcare access, education, arts and culture, and maintaining Florida’s long-term economic competitiveness.
One of the most closely watched policy discussions this year is property tax reform. Florida lawmakers are currently evaluating proposals that could significantly change how local governments fund services. While potential reforms may provide tax relief for homeowners, there are ongoing concerns about possible unintended impacts on businesses if local governments shift revenue burdens to nonhomesteaded and commercial properties. Any constitutional changes would ultimately require voter approval in 2026.
The Chamber will continue monitoring developments throughout the legislative session and advocating for policies that support Sarasota’s employers and economic vitality.
LEGISLATIVE SESSION SNAPSHOT
The 2026 Florida Legislative Session has seen more than 1,800 bills filed, addressing a wide range of issues affecting businesses across the state. Several proposals currently moving through the process aim to:
• Improve regulatory certainty for businesses
• Streamline building permitting and inspection processes
• Increase transparency in local government fees and development regulations
• Expand housing opportunities through workforce housing initiatives
LOCAL GOVERNMENT UPDATES
The City Commission voted unanimously on Friday, February 27th to extend a conditional employment offer to Karie Friling to serve as the next City Manager. Ms. Friling will be the first woman to serve as the Sarasota City Manager.
Additionally, the City Commission is reviewing updates to the Special Events and Noise Ordinances, which could affect how events are permitted and managed throughout the city. These proposals remain under discussion, and community input will continue to play an important role as the process moves forward.

What is the biggest leadership lesson you have learned?
Over the years, balancing professional responsibilities with personal and extended family challenges has shaped how I lead. It taught me that while leadership requires focus, determination, and accountability, it also demands empathy. Everyone is facing something outside of work, and not every day brings peak performance. Recognizing that reality—without lowering standards—creates a culture of trust, resilience, and long-term success.
What is one piece of business advice you would give to local entrepreneurs?
I would encourage entrepreneurs to surround themselves with the right people—employees, mentors, and professional advisors. No successful business is built in a vacuum. Entrepreneurs wear many hats, but periodically slowing down, stepping back, and being willing to adjust course can make a meaningful difference. Staying curious and learning from others is critical, because plans rarely unfold exactly as expected, and adaptability often determines long-term success.
Are there any exciting developments happening in your company?
As we continue to look to grow and compete in an increasingly fast-changing environment, we continue to make a strategic investment in expanding our Learning and Development capabilities. We believe any organization is only as strong as its people, so we are creating a structured learning environment that supports associates from onboarding through career advancement. This investment helps us attract, develop, and retain outstanding professionals who serve our clients and community.
What do you love the most about Sarasota?
I came to Sarasota in 1986 for an opportunity with Kerkering Barberio, and it quickly became home. My wife and I raised our three children here, and I value the welcoming nature of a community built by people from many places. Sarasota’s collaborative spirit—and organizations like the Chamber— creates meaningful connections, making it a remarkable place to build a career, a business, and a life.

A meaningful milestone this year has been the merger of Synovus Bank and Pinnacle Financial Partners. Kevin Gillen, regional president for the Gulf Coast region, explains how this strategic alignment expands opportunities and preserves the local relationships that clients value.
“Both organizations share a strong commitment to high performance, client service and community engagement,” he said. “It’s a cultural and strategic fit, with very little geographic overlap, allowing us to grow and maintain our local focus.”
Gillen is also excited about the expanded capabilities the merger brings to the region. Pinnacle adds depth in specialized areas including aviation and jet financing, captive insurance, equipment financing, auto dealer financing and floor plan financing, franchise financing, corporate and investment banking and HOA banking. A geographic operating model supports these services by empowering decision making at the local level.
“These capabilities strengthen how we serve clients and create new opportunities to attract and retain top talent in the Sarasota region and across Florida,” Gillen said. “By delivering the distinctive service and effective expert advice our clients expect, we drive consistency and sustainable growth for long-term success.”
Gillen says that clear and consistent communication in explaining what the merger means, why it matters and how it will benefit all stakeholders has played a key role in maintaining focus. Synovus will operate under its name until early 2027 when the organization completes integration of its systems and processes.
“We’re building the bank the Gulf Coast needs and deserves,” Gillen said. “With a team of experienced, trusted advisors, a bigger balance sheet and more capabilities, we’re set up to continue serving our clients and investing deeply in the community we call home.”
