Sail Beyond Cancer Newport honors individuals of all ages who are being challenged by cancer by offering free, private, 3-hour sailing excursions on the beautiful waters of Narragansett Bay. Each sail provides a healing opportunity for cancer patients, caregivers, and loved ones to step away from the stress of treatment and reconnect with peace, joy, and one another. Each nominee may bring up to five loved ones—family or friends—to share in this healing experience.

Our mission sails help ease the anxiety, uncertainty, and emotional strain that cancer brings to the entire family. These powerful experiences create moments of courage, connection, and lasting memories during an incredibly difficult time. All sails are conducted by experienced volunteer captains and trained crew aboard a variety of local vessels generously offered by community partners and private boat owners.

Anyone undergoing treatment for any type of cancer is eligible — at no cost.

DiPrete Engineering Welcomes Heather Crook as Director of Accounting & Finance

Cranston, Rhode Island – January 1, 2026

DiPrete Engineering is pleased to announce its newest team member, Heather Crook. Crook joined the team in August and has filled the role of Director of Accounting & Finance for the firm Crook has over 15 years of experience in corporate finance.

“Heather brings a well-rounded perspective to our team,” said Brandon Carr, Principal at DiPrete Engineering. “Her experience in corporate finance and her strong leadership skills make her an exceptional addition to DiPrete. We’re thrilled to have her expertise and energy contributing to our continued growth.”

Prior to joining DiPrete, Crook served as a Finance Manager at Amazon Web Services and previously as a VP at Citizens. Earlier in her career, Heather held analytical and leadership roles supporting the U.S. Departments of Defense and State. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Finance and Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Government from Northeastern University.

Outside of work, Crook enjoys traveling and hosting family and friends, and is an enthusiastic supporter from the sidelines of her children’s various athletic events.

Experienced Member Service Professional Brings Proven Track Record in Branch Operations and Sales

MIDDLETOWN, RI (January 27, 2026): People’s Credit Union has announced the promotion of Jennifer McFarland to Head of Newport Member Operations, reporting to Heather Sweeney, Head of the Newport Branch In her new role, Ms. McFarland will provide hands-on leadership for the branch’s daily operations, mentoring her team while delivering personalized, relationship -driven service to members.

“Jenn’s dedication and results-driven approach have consistently elevated our branch operations and member service standards,” said Heather Sweeney. “When combined with her ability to inspire her team and drive positive growth, she is the ideal choice for Head of Member Operations at our Newport Branch . ”

Ms. McFarland has spent her 24-year career at People’s Credit Union, first as a teller and most recently as a Member Service Representative II. She was named a 2007 People’s Credit Union President’s Council Nominee and a winner in 2010.

PEOPLE’S CREDIT UNION APPOINTS ERIC SCHIFRINE AS HEAD OF FINANCE AND RISK

Seasoned Finance Professional Brings Experience Leading Strategic Growth Initiatives

MIDDLETOWN, RI (February 11, 2026): People’s Credit Union announced the appointment of Eric Schifrine as Head of Finance and Risk, succeeding Patricia Carlin, who announced her retirement this past December. As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, Schifrine will oversee the Finance, Risk, and Financial Recovery departments. He will provide strategic and operational leadership for the credit union’s financial performance, balance sheet management, and enterprise risk oversight, while partnering with the leadership team to shape the organization’s overall strategic direction.

“I’m excited to have Eric join our Senior Leadership Team,” said Sean Daly, Head of People’s Credit Union. “Eric brings a diverse professional background and perspective that combines disciplined financial stewardship, thoughtful risk management, and an inclusive leadership style, aligning closely with our purpose and our commitment to employees, members, and community impact.”

Mr. Schifrine has more than 25 years of experience leading financial operations, strategy, and risk functions for both large global institutions and regional credit unions , most recently serving as Chief Financial Officer at New Bedford Credit Union. Earlier in his career, he held senior leadership roles at AXA, Equitable, and Maestro Health. In addition to his professional experience, Mr. Schifrine serves as a part-time lecturer at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, where he teaches Corporate Finance.

The model of the first statue in Newport to a person of color, George T. Downing, will be unveiled at an Oyster reception and presentation at the Newport Art Museum from 6-9pm February 28, a Black History Month event hosted by Rhode Island Slave History Medallions. Robb Dimmick of Stages of Freedom will speak on the importance of recognizing Mr. Downing, entrepreneur and civil rights advocate for combatting racism. Sculptor, Vinnie Bagwell, will talk about her process in creating the model.
