Women Shaping Community A community built through connection.

Across Miami Shores and its surrounding neighborhoods, women owned businesses play a vital role in shaping the character and energy of our local economy. From wellness and hospitality to real estate, nonprofit leadership, and entrepreneurship, these businesses reflect the creativity, resilience, and dedication that define our community.

The women featured in these pages are all members of the Greater Miami Shores Chamber of Commerce, each contributing in their own way to a network built on collaboration, mentorship, and shared success. While their industries and paths may differ, they share a common commitment to supporting one another and strengthening the communities they serve.

This feature continues our ongoing effort to spotlight the entrepreneurs whose work helps shape both our Chamber and the broader community we share.

Deb Dziena Creating Connection Through Elevated Experiences

In a world where events often move quickly and details blur together, Deb Dziena believes the smallest moments are the ones people remember most. As the owner and principal consultant of DD Hospitality & Events, she has built her business around thoughtful hospitality, transforming gatherings into experiences that make people feel genuinely seen and valued.

In Deb’s world, elevation does not come from excess but from awareness. The placement of a centerpiece, the comfort of a room, or anticipating a guest’s needs before they are spoken all serve a larger purpose. Each decision sends a message that people are seen and valued. That philosophy has become the foundation of her event management and hospitality consulting work, helping businesses and organizations transform ordinary gatherings into meaningful experiences.

Miami Shores has played an important role in shaping that approach. Deb credits the community with reinforcing her people first mindset, where authenticity matters more than appearances. Through her involvement with the Chamber and local organizations like the Friendly Villagers, she has built relationships rooted in shared values rather than transactions. The village atmosphere encourages genuine connection, something she believes naturally strengthens both business and community life.

Her work reflects a broader belief that hospitality extends beyond events. It is about how people show up for one another every day. By leading with empathy and intention, Deb helps clients create environments where guests feel welcomed, comfortable, and remembered long after an event ends.

Outside of her professional work, Deb continually seeks inspiration through new perspectives. Travel, exploring new restaurants, and observing how different communities create a sense of belonging all inform her creative process. She is especially inspired by leaders who are redefining hospitality through service, authenticity, and human connection, ideas she brings back into her own projects and partnerships.

One of the things I’ve come to appreciate most about Miami Shores and our neighboring communities is how many women are building remarkable businesses right here around us. This is our third issue celebrating women entrepreneurs, and putting it together continues to be one of my favorite parts of publishing The Egret. Spending time with these women reminds me that our business community is defined not by competition, but by support. They share ideas, encourage one another, and genuinely want to see each other succeed. Each brings something unique, yet all are connected by purpose, resilience, and a deep commitment to the people they serve.

It has been a privilege to help tell their stories and highlight the impact they continue to make across our community. Thank you for supporting The Egret and the businesses that help make this place feel like home.

Peters

Through DD Hospitality & Events, Deb continues to support local businesses and organizations while strengthening the relationships that make communities thrive. Her work serves as a reminder that meaningful experiences are rarely accidental. They are created when someone chooses to be fully present and to design moments with heart.

Dinah Escarment

Leading with Vision and Community Impact

Dinah Escarment approaches her work with the belief that strong communities are built through consistent leadership and meaningful relationships. Known for her collaborative style and thoughtful perspective, she has shaped her career around helping people and organizations move forward with clarity and purpose. Rather than focusing solely on outcomes, Dinah places equal value on the process, believing trust and communication are the foundations of lasting success.

Throughout her professional journey, she has developed a reputation for balancing strategy with empathy. Clients and colleagues often describe her as someone who listens first, taking time to understand both goals and challenges before offering solutions. That approach has allowed her to build partnerships that extend beyond individual projects, creating relationships grounded in reliability and mutual respect.

Community involvement has always been central to Dinah’s work. She views local engagement not as an obligation, but as an essential part of responsible leadership. By participating in community initiatives and collaborating with fellow business owners, she contributes to an environment where businesses support one another rather than compete in isolation. Her belief is simple: when local businesses invest in their communities, everyone benefits.

Jessica Gonzalez Brewing Community with Intention

At Conscious Brewing, the atmosphere is as carefully crafted as the beer itself. Co owner Jessica Gonzalez helped build the Miami Shores brewery with a clear vision in mind: create a space where people feel comfortable gathering, connecting, and slowing down together. The result is a business shaped as much by community as by craft.

The inspiration behind the brewery grew from a desire to offer something different from the traditional craft beer model. Rather than focusing only on production, Jessica and her team prioritized creating an environment that feels casual, welcoming, and inclusive. Guests are encouraged to come as they are, whether they are longtime beer enthusiasts or simply looking for a place to meet neighbors and friends. That accessibility reflects both Jessica’s personal values and the spirit of the surrounding community.

Like many entrepreneurs, Dinah’s path has included moments of reinvention. Each stage of growth has brought lessons in adaptability, patience, and confidence. Those lessons now inform how she mentors others and approaches new opportunities, allowing her to lead with both perspective and resilience.

Mentorship and collaboration remain guiding principles in her work. Dinah believes leadership is most effective when knowledge is shared and opportunities are created for others to grow. Supporting emerging professionals and encouraging cooperation among peers helps foster innovation while strengthening the professional community as a whole.

Looking ahead, Dinah continues to focus on work that is sustainable, people centered, and rooted in service. By combining professional expertise with a genuine commitment to community, she demonstrates how leadership grounded in connection creates meaningful and lasting impact.

Nichole L’vov

Building Strength

from the Inside Out

Inside Nichole L’vov’s studio, wellness is not measured by appearance or performance. It begins with balance. Through her work at Pilates Unites Education Center, she helps clients reconnect with their bodies through mindful movement, breath, and focused attention, offering something many people rarely allow themselves: uninterrupted time to care for their own well being.

Building the business alongside her husband, Eddie, has added another layer of meaning to the journey. Balancing entrepreneurship while raising a family comes with challenges, but Jessica describes the experience as deeply rewarding. Their partnership is grounded in teamwork, trust, and the goal of building something lasting for their family and for the neighborhood they serve.

Working in an industry that remains largely male dominated has also shaped Jessica’s perspective as a business owner. She believes it is important for women to feel confident challenging expectations and stepping into leadership roles. As more women become brewery owners, brewers, and advocates within the craft beer world, the culture continues to evolve. Jessica embraces being part of that shift, helping create a space where everyone feels welcome and represented.

Through Conscious Brewing, she has helped establish more than a local brewery. The space has become a gathering point where relationships form naturally and community takes center stage. By leading with intention and inclusivity, Jessica continues to show how small businesses can help strengthen the social fabric of the neighborhoods they call home.

Nichole believes Pilates creates a rare pause in modern life. For one hour, clients step away from daily

pressures and focus solely on themselves. That intentional space can feel restorative, almost like a vacation from constant responsibility. She often reminds women in particular that caring for others becomes much harder when physical or emotional health is neglected. A balanced body, mind, and spirit allows people to show up more fully for their families, careers, and communities.

Her path into Pilates was deeply personal. After infertility challenges and a difficult pregnancy, Nichole discovered Pilates while searching for healing. Inspired by that transformation, she opened her first studio, naming it Inner Strength Pilates to reflect the change she experienced within herself.

Starting a business brought years of learning and growth. Over time, she developed the confidence to value her expertise and create strong systems that support both clients and staff. When she relocated to Miami Shores three years ago and opened her North Miami studio, experience replaced uncertainty and allowed her to build with clarity.

Today, Nichole’s goal is simple but powerful. She wants every person who walks into her studio to feel seen, accepted, and encouraged. Through patience, persistence, and compassion, she helps clients rediscover strength one movement at a time.

Sunja Leon

Purpose in Action: Leading Through Community

For Sunja Leon, community impact begins long before a program launches or a strategy is written. It starts with people coming together around a shared purpose. Through her work as founder of Impact Partners Agency and co publisher of Upper East Side Living Magazine, she helps organizations turn vision into meaningful, lasting change.

Her commitment to nonprofit work is personal. Through years of supporting organizations, serving on boards, and guiding nonprofits through foundational milestones such as securing 501(c)(3) status or developing sustainable growth plans, Sunja has witnessed how powerful a focused group of people can be when united around a shared goal. What motivates her most is seeing tangible change unfold in real time.

These experiences have shaped her understanding of leadership. Rather than standing at the front, she believes effective leaders create space for others to succeed. Listening carefully, building clear systems, and remaining consistent are central to her approach.

Leadership requires humility and clarity, along with a willingness to serve the mission rather than personal recognition.

Vanessa Maggi

Helping Families Find Home and Community

A home is rarely just a property. For Vanessa Maggi, it represents a turning point in someone’s life story. As the leader of Maggi Realty Group, her work centers on guiding families through moments of change, helping them find not only a house but a true sense of belonging within a community.

Buying or selling a home often marks a new chapter, whether it is growth, reinvention, loss, or a fresh start. Vanessa approaches each transaction with an understanding that these decisions carry emotional weight as well as financial significance. Being trusted during such personal transitions is something she does not take lightly. Her goal is to help clients feel confident and supported throughout the process, ensuring they find spaces where families can grow and where daily life feels grounded. In communities like Miami Shores and the surrounding neighborhoods, that work becomes especially meaningful, as homes are closely tied to relationships, schools, and a shared sense of place.

Balancing entrepreneurship, publishing, board service, and family life has reshaped how Sunja views success. Instead of striving for perfect balance, she focuses on presence and alignment. Through her involvement with the Greater Miami Shores Chamber of Commerce and other local initiatives, she has learned that integration works better than separation.

At the heart of Sunja’s work is a desire to encourage the next generation of women to recognize their influence early. She believes impact is not defined by titles or visibility, but by integrity, courage, and consistency.

Sharon Thompson

Connecting Talent, Opportunity, and Growth

Careers rarely follow a straight line, and Sharon Thompson has built her work around helping people navigate those turning points with confidence. As the leader of Thompson Staffing, she works at the intersection of people and opportunity, guiding both businesses and professionals through moments of transition, growth, and reinvention.

Years in the staffing industry have shown Sharon that ambition looks different for everyone. For some, success means advancement and leadership. For others, it means stability, flexibility, or finding an environment where their strengths are recognized and valued. What she has seen consistently is that confidence grows when individuals are placed in roles that truly align with their abilities. Talent exists everywhere, she believes, but access to opportunity does not always come easily. Helping bridge that gap has become a defining purpose of her work, allowing individuals to recognize potential they may not have fully seen in themselves.

Over the years, Vanessa has built her reputation not only on market knowledge, but on relationships. Many of her clients return during different stages of life, from first homes to growing families and later transitions. Watching those stories unfold has reinforced her belief that real estate is ultimately about people rather than transactions.

Family has also become an important part of her professional journey with the recent addition of her daughter to the business. Professionally, Vanessa values the fresh perspective and energy she brings to the team, while personally the experience has created an opportunity to share knowledge across generations as they build something that reflects both legacy and evolution.

Beyond real estate, Vanessa is a strong supporter of women focused initiatives within the business community. She believes mentorship encourages confidence and collaboration, strengthening both individuals and the community as a whole.

For Vanessa, success is measured not only by closed sales but by lasting relationships and thriving neighborhoods. Through every interaction, she continues to show that helping families find the right home is also about helping communities grow stronger.

Integrity and relationships have shaped the foundation of Thompson Staffing from the beginning. In an industry built on trust, clients rely on her team to help shape their organizations, while candidates trust them with deeply personal career decisions. Over time, Sharon’s leadership has evolved from hands on execution to strategic guidance, empowering her team while maintaining clear expectations and high standards. She leads with empathy and accountability, balancing measurable results with a strong commitment to people first values.

Her experience has also made her a strong advocate for women navigating career transitions or reentering the workforce. Sharon emphasizes that professional value is not limited to traditional paths. Skills developed through different life stages often become an individual’s greatest strengths. She encourages professionals to invest in continued learning, advocate for themselves, and seek environments that support long term growth and confidence.

Rather than viewing change as a setback, Sharon sees career transitions as opportunities for reinvention. Through her work, she continues to help individuals move forward with clarity while supporting businesses that understand the lasting impact of investing in people and building strong teams. Her approach reflects a belief that when people are supported in meaningful ways, both careers and organizations grow stronger together. In helping others find the right fit, she continues to strengthen the professional communities she serves.

Being a woman in business is a meaningful role to step into. It brings responsibility, and it also brings opportunity. Many women are building companies in fields that have gradually become more welcoming, and they are doing it with confidence and resilience. Growth is part of the journey, both in personal development and in the way a business supports the people connected to it. The choices made along the way shape more than a company. They influence employees, customers, and young people who are imagining what their own futures might look like.

Women leaders often carry a strong sense of determination while also paying close attention to the people around them. Financial health is important, yet for many owners, real fulfillment comes from seeing a team member gain confidence or watching a client’s idea take shape. Leadership becomes a chance to guide others, offer encouragement, and create a workplace where people feel comfortable sharing their thoughts. Many women business owners make time to mentor someone who is just getting started or to lend support to another local entrepreneur. Over time, that steady encouragement creates workplaces built on respect and trust.

Staying involved in the community tends to grow naturally from that same spirit. Local businesses succeed because neighbors choose to support them, and that support means everything. In return, women business owners often look for ways to stay engaged in everyday community life. You might see them sponsoring a school event, partnering with a local nonprofit, or opening their doors for a gathering that brings people together. These moments strengthen the connections that make a town feel like home. The women featured here continue that tradition by investing their energy right here where it counts.

Being a woman in business today means building something with care and intention. It means growing a company while staying connected to the people it serves and the community that supports it. When work is guided by purpose and genuine relationships, success naturally reaches beyond the workplace and into the shared life of the community.

The Ripple Effect of Shirley Stobs Davis

Olympic gold medalist and longtime Miami Shores resident Shirley Stobs Davis has spent a lifetime shaping lives both in and out of the water. Recently, in recognition of her extraordinary contributions to the sport of swimming and to the local community, the Miami Shores Aquatic Center pool was officially named in her honor, cementing her legacy in the village she has helped inspire for generations.

Throughout her life, Davis has been a devoted mother and grandmother, instilling in her family the values of loyalty, perseverance, and commitment. As a passionate educator, she taught mathematics at Miami Country Day School and The Cushman School, influencing generations of students with both her intellect and her kindness.

Her impact extended far beyond the classroom. As coach of the Miami Shores Country Club Swim Team, which later evolved into the Miami Shores Swim Team, Davis introduced hundreds of children to swimming while teaching lessons in discipline, confidence, and resilience. For many young swimmers, she provided their first experience in the water and helped build skills that would last a lifetime.

Central to Davis’s philosophy was perseverance. Through structured training and steady encouragement, she taught students that success comes through dedication and hard work. Each practice became an opportunity to develop not only athletic ability, but character.

Equally important was her emphasis on integrity and sportsmanship. Davis believed winning was secondary to respect, honesty, and fair play. Her guidance helped shape strong character in both her athletes and her students, promoting growth that extended well beyond the pool deck or classroom walls.

Today, Shirley Stobs Davis is remembered not only as an Olympic champion, but as a beloved educator, mentor, and community leader whose influence continues to ripple throughout Miami Shores and beyond.

Shirley recently retired and moved to a senior living community in Ocala with her son, Jimmy. Her son Bill remains in Miami Shores with his family and works at The Cushman School, while her daughter, Julia, is a school teacher in Colorado. Shirley plans to return to the Shores for the pool dedication and says she is both thrilled and deeply grateful for the honor. For a woman who helped shape generations of swimmers, it is a full-circle moment, one she looks forward to celebrating with the community she has long called home.
