The Dakota people were the original inhabitants of the area, and the land held significant cultural and spiritual importance to them. In the 1680s, French explorers arrived, followed by American settlers in the 19th century.

The city of Mankato was officially organized in 1858, and North Mankato was established in 1898. The two cities have grown together over time, forming a vibrant community. The area’s history is marked by various events, including the U.S.-Dakota Conflict of 1862, which had a profound impact on the region.

CityArt Public Art Tour is a self-guided tour of over 40 unique pieces of art, including the People’s Choice and Jurors’ Purchase Award winners from previous Walking Sculpture Tours, and the new public art installed in Old Town in 2018.

CityArt Walking Sculpture Tour is an opportunity to enjoy art out in the open. The tour features 32 sculptures from artists across the U.S. in mediums ranging from stainless steel to fused glass to found objects throughout the City Center. Vote for your favorite and help choose The People’s Choice Award. The sculpture awarded People’s Choice receives a $1,000 prize for the artist.

Silo Art is an awe-inspiring mural that wraps 135-foot-tall silos in Old Town. Guido van Helten, an international artist painted the mural on the Ardent Mills silos from 2019 to 2020. The design brings together the shared ideals of community, diversity, and inclusion; and it pays respect to history while encouraging a positive dialogue on the future identity of the Mankato area.

Mahkato Wacipi Powwow

The Mahkato Wacipi Powwow is more than just a festival; it is a powerful, traditional Dakota gathering—a WaCHEE-pee, or “dance”—rooted in respect and remembrance. This beloved multi-day event, re-established in Mankato decades ago, brings Native Americans and non-Native attendees together to honor the past, celebrate life, and witness the incredible cultural music and dance of the Dakota people.

Sakatah Singing Hills State Trail runs from Mankato to Faribault, totaling 41 miles with an asphalt surface. This fairly flat trail provides riders with beautiful scenery as it wanders through forests, along pastures, farmland, lakes, and Sakatah Lake State Park, featuring six great cultural pit stops.

Red Jacket Trail

Mankato’s most popular trail offers stunning views from the massive Red Jacket Trestle, standing 80 feet high and 550 feet long. Important: Due to recent damage, a portion of the route is closed indefinitely, and the trail no longer runs the full route to Rapidan. Enjoy the open sections and the majestic bridge!

Minnesota River Valley Trail

Minnesota River Valley Trail is a paved connector between the Sakatah and Minneopa Trails. It is a multi-use trail ideal for hikers and bikers alike. The trail runs along the beautiful Minnesota River, highlighting Mankato’s prime location in the river valley.

Minneopa State Park Trail
