Multigenerational Housing Complex in Phoenix, AZ inspired by slot canyons

TECTONIC REINVENTIONS

In this course, our class worked as a team to create surfaces that had enough double curvature to make them independently structural. Next, we had to develop methods to join and assemle those surfaces using Rhino and Grasshopper. The structural surface would act as a sculptural architectural intervention in the RWU Architecture building. The final structure was fabricated using a CNC machine, 8mm. Marine-grade Okoume plywood, 3/4” Birch plywood and zip ties.

TECTONIC REINVENTIONS

Surfaces are divided into strips

Strips are triangulated, joined and converted into a mesh

Disks populate interior edges perpendicular to those curves

Triangles are scaled down, creating gaps

Mesh is offset and used as a trimming plane for the disks

Notches added at the intersection curves between each of the disks and the panels

Holes trimmed at vertex, and data organized Final Grasshopper definition

SCHOOL DESK

For this Digital Fabrication course, working in a small team, we were tasked to create a school desk using 3/4” Birch plywood and a CNC machine. My design was inspired by the human spinal cord and has a system of curving ribs that slot into two spines. The ribs were designed to make the seating position ergonomic and comfortable for the user.

CHILDREN’S THEATRE

The goal of this project was to combine historical context with modern ideas to create a building that inspires creativity to its inhabitants. The structure creates the architecture while also framing views of College Hill, Providence, RI. The atrium is a reflection of College Hill’s steep topography, reflected in the negative space created by removing floor areav away from the front facade gradually as the building rises. Pourous floors in combination with light wells bring natural light throughout the building. The program includes, two theaters, supporting spaces, an amphitheater, classrooms, green space, and offices.

VIBRANT SHADOWS

This performance space is an experiential manipulation of light that merges art and architecture. Through the use of dichroic glass in a grid formation the angle and intensity of the sun cast various radiant colors and dance throughout the day. The layout of the monoliths allow for people to walk through and experience the amazing properties of this material up close and become immersed in the many different hues and mesmerizing patterns that it generates.

INDIA POINT BIKE STATION

The intent of this Bike Station is to create a new gateway linking Linear Park to India Point Park, bikes are able to pass through the building via a ramp. The program includes a repair shop, bike garage, cafe, and an outdoor terrace to take in views of India Point and Providence Harbor. The concept derived from pushing, pulling, subtracting and distorting a series of stacked boxes. Interior voids spark dialogue between relating programmatic spaces. The Bike Station is wrapped in a structural skin composed of a framework of diagonally intersecting I-beams that allow for greater cantilevers and lots of natural light while also acting as a shading mechanism.
