Downtown New Hamburg stepped back in time last week as the cast and crew of Murdoch Mysteries transformed the community into 1912 for the hit CBC series' upcoming Christmas special.
The production, filmed over two days on July 29 and 30, used New Hamburg's historic downtown streets and architecture as the backdrop for the holiday episode, “On a Cold Winter’s Night,” which is scheduled to air this December. Producer Jeremy Hood said the production team knew they had found the
right location as soon as they arrived. "It was just a great look for our period," Hood said. "Not too busy because we had to do some street stuff. As soon as we got there, it was like, 'Yeah, it's just a great look, great feeling.' " The community's heritage buildings Continued on page 2
Another new long-term care home could be coming to New Hamburg. Tri-County Mennonite Homes (TCMH) has been awarded 224 beds from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. The bed allotment is in addition to the 160-bed home the non-profit is currently constructing. The new development would be located nearby on Neville Street and connect to the Nithview Home redevelopment, expected to open in 2027. The non-profit care provider said it is required to meet ministry timelines for the project, which, if approved, would break ground next year and be completed in 2030. Wilmot Township council debated a zone change application for the property, something needed for it to move forward. It is currently zoned Zone 4 Residential but needs to be Zone 12 Institutional to allow for a long-term care home. Council approved the current zoning in Continued on page 3
