Oxford OPP’s Community Engagement Officer is asking drivers to think safety after a rash of recent incidents. Although the total number of fatal collisions in the OPP’s Oxford detachment coverage area is down by two year-to-date – from 14 to 12 – Crawford said the Oxford detachment’s percentage of those fatalities in the West Region has increased. “We are the detachment with the most fatalities in the West Region currently,” she said, adding there were more fatalities recently. “When we have so many in a row, it seems like we have an increase.” This number includes fatalities on the 401 in the Oxford area. Crawford didn’t have a possible reason for the number of collisions, with the OPP putting their messaging out and working on active enforcement. She did point to the big four reasons for collisions - not wearing a seatbelt, drug and alcohol use while driving, inattentive driving (eating or drinking, managing a child in the back seat, and using a cell phone while driving), and speeding – as factors. Although all of the OPP statistics aren’t broken down by municipality, Crawford said of the 60 Western Region fatalities this year, 35 were caused by the four mentioned reasons, with a breakdown of 14 being speed related, 11 not wearing seat belts, seven were inattentive driving, and three were alcohol and drug related. “It takes all of us to do our part,” she said. “Traffic safety is everybody’s responsibility. Whether you are a driver or passenger, you have to be alert and not distract the driver.” CONTINUED TO PAGE 2
THE BEST TILLSONBURGER?

Who makes the best TillsonBURGER? Finding an answer to that question was one of the goals of Annandale National Historic Site’s Party Until the Cows Come Home event on the weekend. The TillsonBURGER competition paid homage to the 145th anniversary of Annandale Farm, and E.D. Tillson’s role in bringing Holstein cows to Oxford County. Local restaurants were allowed to enter their best burger to a panel of judges to judge the best burger in town. The winner was from Chrissy’s Catering. Judging the burgers were, left to right, Carrie Lewis, Dave Morris, Chris Agro and Daniel Reintjes, while Kate Bakos of Annandale National Historic Site serves the next entry. Although Party Until the Cows Come Home was a one-off in tribute to the anniversary, the burger contest will return next year.
Lake Lisgar dredging project given approval by council JEFF HELSDON Editor
Lake Lisgar should be a better environment for fish, fowl and all types of wildlife with the completion of dredging and installation of a silt trap this fall. Council approved sole sourcing the installation of an access road, dredging and the silt trap at Monday night’s meeting.

The issue is in the north end of the lake, where Stony Creek flows into it. As it crosses sandy soil, the creek transports sand and silt, which deposit in the lake. The lake was formed more than 100 years ago when Thomas Hardy dammed the creek for a mill pond. The town then purchased it for firefighting purposes. The Lake Lisgar Revitalization Committee first identified the work needed to stop the siltation of the north end of the lake. CONTINUED TO PAGE 2
