Author Jim Gardner, a science fiction writer with a local connection, was recognized for his body of work on August 9, 2026. On that date, Gardner and two other Canadian science fiction writers were this year’s inductees into the Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Association (CSFFA) Hall of Fame. Though Gardner was born in Bradford, Ont., his family moved to Simcoe when he was eight. Gardner attended North Public School and Elgin Avenue Public School, then moved on to Simcoe Composite School, graduating as a member of the Class of 1972. Gardner studied mathematics at University of Waterloo, earning a B.Math and M.Math in Applied Math. While at University of Waterloo, Gardner wrote plays and radio dramas. He went on to pen 10 novels, published as James Alan Gardner - Expendable, Commitment Hour, Vigilant, Hunted, Ascending, Trapped, Radiant, Gravity Wells, All Those Explosions Were Someone Else’s Fault, and They Promised Me the Gun Wasn’t Loaded. He has also written short stories and novellas, and has had a number of pieces published in Amazing

The 2026 Norfolk County Terry Fox Run is fast approaching. This year’s Terry Fox Run is Sunday, Sept. 20 at Simcoe Lions Park (Da-
vis Street). Check-in or registration starts at 10 a.m. Opening ceremonies start about 10:30 a.m. and the Terry Fox Run starts at 11 a.m. “We will have lots of refreshments and snacks that have been donated by local businesses, and pizza
