Torch Run hosted once again in Huron County GODERICH SUN STAFF
info@goderichsun.com
The Ontario Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) made a return to Huron County on Wednesday, June 3 to increase awareness and raise funds for Special Olympics. Police officers, Special Olympians, family members, friends and community supporters from all over Huron County ran, walked, scootered and strolled together for the annual event. According to Huron County OPP, the Ontario LETR is the largest public awareness vehicle and grass-roots fundraiser for Special Olympics. Since its inception, the LETR has raised more than $80 million in Canada. “The Law Enforcement Torch Run is a highlight on my calendar, and I encourage you to celebrate these courageous and dedicated athletes,” said Russ Nesbitt, Huron County OPP Sergeant and Torch Run Coordinator. “Whether it’s a honk of the horn, a high-five, some cheering from the sidelines, or a donation to support the cause, it really is appreciated.” The Huron County Torch Run began from the Maitland River Community Church in Wingham, where participants ran through the town and ended at the south end. Participants were then transported to Blyth, Clinton and Goderich, where they completed legs in each community. Following the final leg in Goderich, participants and supporters met at McGee Motors for a celebratory barbecue.

IODE: Celebrating 125 years of service
KATHLEEN SMITH Editor
Founded on June 17, 1901, the IODE Maple Leaf Chapter has been serving Goderich and surrounding area for 125 years as the community’s oldest service club. Marking this remarkable milestone, the ladies of the IODE and distinguished guests gathered on June 17 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Goderich to celebrate more than a century of improving lives through volunteerism, education support, community service and citizenship initiatives. “The women who founded our chapter 125 years ago were visionaries,” said Penny Murray, Regent of the IODE
Maple Leaf Chapter. “At a time when women had limited opportunities to participate in public life, they created an organisation dedicated to strengthening their community through service.” Throughout its history, the Maple Leaf Chapter has supported countless local initiatives, educational programs, military families, health-care projects, and community organisations. Today, members continue that tradition through fundraising, volunteer service, scholarships, and charitable giving. “We are proud to carry that legacy forward and to continue making a meaningful difference in Goderich and the surrounding area,” added Murray.
