Young Historians Bring the Granger Movement to Life at National History Day by Hailey Lincoln Williamson National Grange Intern

The halls of the University of Maryland were filled with energy, curiosity, and a passion for the past as students from across the country gathered for the National History Day competition on June 16. Among the many impressive presentations was one delivered by five young gentlemen from Marshalltown High School in Iowa, whose project explored a chapter of American agricultural history that continues to influence the nation today: the Granger Laws. The students captivated their audience with a thorough examination of the challenges farmers faced in the late nineteenth century. At a time when railroad companies held tremendous power over transportation, farmers often found themselves at the mercy of monopolistic shipping rates. Even after a successful harvest, many producers struggled to earn a profit because the cost of transporting their goods to market consumed much of their income. continued on page 3
